Going back to the last St. Judes Auction, my son and I had picked out several items we were going to place bids on. One in particular caught our eyes -- the Fins and Feathers Hunt. I am so glad that we did, because this was a weekend that will be long remembered and cherished.
Fast Forward to last Saturday. My granddaughter decided to accompany me up to our good friends' the Wilsons. We got up early and hit the road for our 6-hour drive to Flat Rock, Alabama. We arrived early afternoon -- after a delay when I couldn't use my Credit Card because it got scammed by somebody in Romania. Luckily my granddaughter, Kelsey, had hers with her.
We visited for a while with our wonderful hosts the Wilson family -- Don, Tammy, Skyler and Chloe. We all decided to do a little arrow flingin'.
We started out on a recent addition of their's -- a really nice 3D range.

Then we decided it was time to start shooting at a moving target in preparation for our hunt the next day.

We did some final preparations to Don's boat before our night out on Lake Guntersville and had dinner.
I need to say that Don and Tammy are blessed with two great children that Kelsey and me really enjoy being around.

Have you ever seen a cuter "red head"?

Looks like good times with some of the finest people I know. Looking forward to the rest :archer:
-
Now comes the excitement. We hooked up the boat, and we were on our way for a night of "fun."
Don fell into a great deal on this boat. It is a great bowfishing platform.

-
This is gonna be a good one. Great folks all around.
-
The water was still a little cold and very low so the fish weren't in the normal numbers that we've seen on past bowfishing outings. But we all got shots, and even managed to bring in a few for the camera.

Skyler and I had a blast trying to hit the silver streaks that dashed all around the boat -- we weren't able to land any, but we sure chucked a lot of arrows at them little shad.
Stay tuned because we had even more fun on Sunday morning that will be shown when Don uploads the pictures of the pheasant hunt.

It was a great week-end that will be remembered for a very long time. I've got a very good friend who is a semi-professional photographer and he agreed to go along and take a few pics for us.....he took 1247 pics in four hours!!!!! He narrrowed them down to 650 and now I'm trying too narrow it down some more but they are all GREAT! I wish you all could see every one of them......They are coming, just hang on...
-
Awesome stuff, keep them coming.
-
I'm looking forward to following this thread. How can anyone go wrong with birds, fish and family???
-
It will take Don a while to upload pics, so I will continue.
Sunday a.m. couldn't come fast enough -- after we finished reminiscing about some of the shots we'd taken during our bowfishing excursion, we settled in for the evening.
Finally, Sunday morning rolled around, and when it was light enough to see, I made my way outside to see how the weather looked because the prediction was for some rain. The rain was holding off. I knew then this was going to be a great day.
Shortly after that the group for the pheasant hunt started arriving early on Sunday. The first to arrive was Terry Green. We "chewed the fat" while waiting on the others. Conan, who works in the Archery Dept for Don, and Mr. Wilson, Don's dad, arrived next, followed by a local father and son team, Steve and Justin, who were invited guests.
-
It was nice to see Larry again....and ti finally get over and see the area Don and Skyler live. They live in some beautiful country. I saw lots and lots of meadows and woodlots I would like to roam and hunt. It also looked like it would be teaming with game.
-
Great stuff will be watching this one for sure. I have seen some pics too and if the stories are anything like the pictures this is going to be great.
-
Good times Larry.
-
Once the group all met each other, it was time to practice for those unpredictable birds when they take flight.
I don't know if the disc or the bird is harder to hit?????

Since we still had a little time before we were going meet up with our "host for the day" at the Pheasant Hunt, it was time to try flu flu arrows on the 3D course.
I mentioned the 3D course earlier, and what a challenging course it is. The Wilson's did a great job laying it out. It starts out having to shoot across a pond at a hog on the opposite bank. Each station is challenging in its own way with the bedded deer, javalina, turkey, panther, roverine and bear face-off, deer licking a salt block, and a deer behind a brush pile with only a few small window shooting opportunities (I think I've left one lane out, but I can't remember what it is).

I enjoyed meeting all the other guys as well. We had a great group. I was looking forward to doing something I'd never done before. .....hunting pheasants. ...and yes we had great weather for sure.
-
After shooting the 3D course we loaded up and headed out for the 20 minute drive to Henegar, Alabama.
We were met by Spencer (Owner/Operator of the Preserve), his son, and JR, and we were off for what was an exciting and fun-filled adventure.

Owner and Operator of the Preserve was Spencer. A fine gentleman and host.

The photographer did a few 'rapid fire' camera takes.....and he got one of my 2nd rooster just as the arrow struck.....all the arrows in the pics before are blurred....and then there's one with my flu flu almost in full focus as he caught the pic just perfectly as the arrow stopped in the bird....I'll post that up in a bit....
-
Pics coming in just a few minutes...nearly all of them are uploaded...Skyler will start posting them shortly...hang on!!!!

We were hunting at Bengis Creek Outfitters with Spencer and Hunter Hall. They are both Traditional Bowhunters so they know what it takes to make a Hunt like this go very smooth. I think they had as much fun as we did!!!!! You can contact Spencer at 256-997-2074 and he can set up a hunt for you.....now a few action shots.... Great pics! Haven't bowhunted pheasant since I was 12, gonna have to set up one of these hunts. Looks a lot drier than chasing ducks without a dog!
Did you have a designated area to shoot in or did everyone shoot at each flushed bird?
-
Cool pics. I love the ones with arrows in mid-flight. Looks like a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing.

Lokks like a great hunt, congrats to all.

This was a special Bird and pic....
This one was hit by both Don and I a split second apart. Don hit it on the left side of the body under the wing and my arrow caught the same location on the opposite side. Two good friends and a double. Although the bow hunters rule applied of course....it was Dons kill.
Thanks for at least letting me back ya up Don. :campfire:

BTW....I've had several folks email me if I shot all of the on the wing......
I shot the 1st one pretty early, a rooster on the wing, and I was tickled pink. I shot the 2nd rooster not long after, the one in the shot sequence I posted earlier. I shot the hen running....she didn't want to fly for some reason, and began running and folks started unloading, she turned around and ran back by me and I shot her as she ran by about 15 yards away....
I then moved out on the wing...last man on the right or left for a while and shot the 4th in the neck with me being the last man to shoot at that particular rooster.
Don's dad was back up with a shot gun to shoot when all arrows were fired, and I clipped its neck.....it started to fold and then straightened up. I turned to Don and said 'did you see that?....I hit its neck"...bout that time I heard the shot gun and turned to see the bird falling. Don said it folded again and was on its way down but his dad put up a shot anyway for good measure.
I can't tell you how much fun it was....can't get the hunt out of my head let me tell ya!

There are 3 Full Pheasant Tails from this hunt on the St Judes Auction.
Wow....it sure was fun revisiting this thread...and made me take pause in what happened with the tornadoes in that area just a few weeks ago.
I remember Don texting several of us from his closet that whole day.
Count your blessings folks. Be thankful of the memories we all share, share together, and will remember for ever.
Those times we spend together are very special, so lets always make the best of them.
