I found this while Rabbit hunting with a buddy of mine Bowspirit last fall. I'm quite sure I know what it is, Figured I would share and allow some guesses.
Funny the only rabbit we saw was sitting at our feet while we were taking a break in open woods. We had some stump shooting fun though.

Looks kind of like a bobcat skull.
-
I agree...
-
Jason, was thinking the same thing but the teeth seen to big.

A big old bobcat. Whats the story?
-
x4 on the bobcat
-
Yeah, teeth are too thick to be a small cat.
-
Bobcat..absolutly
-
Bobcat and resting on one of the greatest reads ever.
-
X5 on bobcat
-
from the size of the choppers I'd guess a wolverine. It's a powerful built skull, anyway. I wouldn't want it to grab the back of my neck.

Here I thought it was a cheetah!
I guess this one was too easy. :readit:
. In a few days we were supposed to head to Rays. Bowspirit was dropping off his belongings headed south in Bear Misser's van.
We got in a few hours of stumping and rabbit hunting.
Not much story Izzy, I came busting out of some brush late December There it was laying on the ground on its side.
-
Bobcat.
-
Good guess on the wolverine but I have a couple. The eye sockets are too big and the skull is too round. Those BIG thick teeth are throwing me off. Even a young cougar would have thinner teeth. If it is a bobcat, he was king.
-
I still say the teeth are way to big for a bobcat, they look bigger than the 2 bear skulls I have in my room
-
With Bowspirits name mentioned I might have guessed domestic house cat. He does have a fondness for hunting less than wild beasts. Any white hairs found close by the skull? How bout a pink collar and bell? :p
-
Adult male bobcat. Same shape but those teeth!!!!

Cerval maybe? They used to sell them here in a Latham pet shop.
-
Bobcat.

Saber toothed Bobcat.

Not sure but not a bobcat.

DANG!!!! You found my ex!
-
It is a bobcat.Pictures distort perspective some but from the looks of the canines,it is a mature one.Without measurements,I couldn't say whether it is male or female.

Never did have any experiances with cat, Izzy. But in all seriousness I once had an uncle who talked of how easy it was to prepare in the kitchen. :bigsmyl:

Appears to be a bobbed tail kitty
Possibly a Canadian Lynx
Maybe it is just 'Ole eat em alive'
-
Meow! :readit:

I was going to say large adult bobcat or small mt. lion, maybe a half grown adolescent?
Do you all have mt. lions or cougars up there?
I'd almost bet with 90% certainty that it's a feline of some sort. Hard to say without actually holding it in my hands, like another member said already pictures distort the actual size and shape a bit.
-
A bobcat or a pug nose dog(LOL)
-
I have seen lots of Bobcats and none have ever had anything close to those choppers. If it were a cat he was a record book bobcat for sure. We have a 45 lb bobcat at the local game and fish fish hatchery and he is not even close to those teeth. Don't think it is bobcat at all.
-
Boston Terrier!
-
Bobcat.

Lynx Skull (http://www.flickr.com/photos/galleriejc/5167524786/)
Hope the link worked. I'm going with lynx, matches the teeth a lot better.
-
I was thinking bobcat until fireball31 said lynx. It sure looks like a cat scull for sure. May be a lynx ?
-
bobcat
-
Just went up stairs and brought one down to compare........I was thinking Bobcat. Even though mine was a Tom that scaled 40#, the 'canine teeth' are somewhat smaller... So even though I have never seen or handled one, I'll agree with Lynx. :dunno:
Gene
-
Chupacabra Charlie. Has a nice ring to it.
-
I was thinking Bobcat all along. They get huge around here.
I'm not sure lynx are around here but then again, Maybe the Bobcats I've seen are really lynx :dunno: . When I say they are huge, I'm talking HUGE.
Maybe IndianaBowman will chime in. He shot a bigun with his bow a couople years ago.
-
Black Panther fo sho.
-
It is a bobcat. The canines are nubbed off a little. That and a little wide angle picture distortion make them look big.Lynx actually have smaller canines than bobcats.A bobcat has to really get some age to have canines nubbed off like that.Older cat's canines are also thicker at the base. You don't often get to see cats that old.
-
Tom Bobcat
-
Looks like a Bobcat to me. Also, I really enjoy the author of the book it is on, good stuff.
-
I'd have to aggree with some of the others, tom bobcat. Either that or a saber tooth!! :D Those are some big snags!

Yep, I think you just nailed it.
-
I would say a BIG, OLD tom bobcat. It would have to be BIG & OLD. But it could very well be a lynx. All of them are related!
-
Charlie, I just got the skull back from the taxidermist recently. It is definitely a feline. I'll look at my skull and see what the canines look like. I know they are big, but those are thick.

See the map on this interesting page.
-
I'm not sure but maybe a Couger
-
My guess is bobcat as well. Those teeth may be loose, making them fall some and appear larger.
Here's some pics of one I have

I'm with JimB about the lynx. They have smaller, shorter teeth than the bobcat... I've had both skulls here side by side.
Whichever it is, damn cool thing to find.
BIG MEDICINE!
-
Looks like the teeth loosened in the palate/skull and you are seeing bases that normall would not be so evident, plus that might be a really old cat.....as Fireman said. Makes sense to me.
-
Panathore. . Bob cat or lynx.
-
has to be a bobcat?
-
Bobcat or lynx depending or where it was found. Bobcat have 14 upper teeth, but I think Lynx do also.
-
Charlie, it looks very similar to the one I have here, but those are thicker. I think it is just a big old bobcat.
-
You don't see many really old bobcats.I've trapped them for about 30 years and have been mounting all kinds of cats for about as long.Canines grow from the base so they get thicker as they get older but most that you will ever see are more slender.A friend who is a retired government trapper commented the other day that you don't see many bobcats with badly worn canines.I agree.few get old enough.
The first two pictures exaggerate the size because the canines are closer to the camera and most cameras have wide angle lenses. When you look at the side view, the canines are more proportionate.I still think it was an old cat.
Massachusetts has no lynx and lynx don't have large canines like that.A pretty neat find.I don't remember ever finding a bobcat skull though fox and coyotes aren't to uncommon.
-
Bobcat maybe,but possibly a Lynx.
The canines are extremely large for a Bobcat or a Lynx
-
Big bobcat.Don't think lynx venture that far south in the northeast,do they?
-
Nice find. Misleading whatever it is.
-
Bobcat
-
"Saber tooth crotch cricket"
-
most definitely a dog. looks like a breed with a short snout. but no doubt due to the canines and size.
-
my guess is a skunk.don

-
Charlie - That book that you mounted the Skull on is a great read and should get you fired up for this years Elk hunt.
-
John,
In 2 weeks after my hog hunt, Elk will be all I will be able to think about. ;)
-
Coyote
-
Gary Busey's ancestors?
-
I saw this thread and had to add these pics. I found this about 20 yrds off the road,I think it's a house cat. You can tell they are from the same species.

I never saw a bobcat in Jersey, neat how similar they are.
-
I'm going to go with a big Tom Bobcat. He was definitely the man, until he used up number nine life!
-
I haven't read all the posts and I am sure you have told what it is, but first guess is a Bobby, the canines look awfully large and the eye sockets look much bigger than that of a bobby so maybe Lynx?
-
Reckon it might be Jimmy HOffa?, lol.

most definitely NOT a dog!
-
among cats, lynx have a unique dental formula. Most felines have dentition of i3.c1.p3.m1/3.1.2.1=30 while lynx have 3.1.2.1/3.1.2.1=28 (molars 1.1 are unique to cats)...canine have 3.1.4.2/3.1.4.3=42
i=incisors c=canines p=premolars m=molars
if there are 3 premolars in the upper jaw, it is a bobcat, if there are only 2 lynx.
hope this helps
Ted
-
Lynx??
-
fishercat?
-
Looks like there were 3 pre-molars. one little, one large one medium size.
-
Lynx is what it is.
