Just returned from my 1st trip to Ray Hammond's Hog Heaven and I am already missing it. Spent the weekend chasing hogs in SC with my good friend "Bearkeeper" and a great group of guys from The Traditional Bowhunters Of Maryland.
Long story very short this past spring at the Baltimore Bowmen shoot I bought a raffle ticket with a chance to win a hunt for two to Ray's place. Months pass and out of the blue Andy from TBM contacted me with the stunning news that I had won!
After lots of hooting and hollering I asked my buddy to come along. Few months of planning and this past Thursday we left for Hog Heaven!!

Nice :campfire:
-
Got to Estill SC and the next day did some quick exploring before we met the guys at the hardware store in town.

Once in camp Ray did a fantastic job of describing the lay of the land, what to look for, and after some discussion everyone had their area. BK and I headed to the swamp area together.

We came to a smaller road and we split up for the rest of the afternoons hunt.

That can't possibly be the end of the story man! Pics and details man!
-
Bring it :saywhat:
-
Everyone got back to camp and compared notes. Game sighted but no arrows flying yet. After eating the planning for the next day's hunt began.

Great time just hanging out with everyone by what must be the biggest campfire drum in the world.
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1300155350.jpg) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1300155350.jpg)
Stayed up way too late and went to bed dreaming of what might lay ahead.
-
Went back to the swamp next morning and BK and I split up again. Got to this downed tree, took a compass reading, and headed off into the swamp.

Cool Saturday morning so the still hunting was much quieter and with some low winds hopes were high.

Not too far past this big stump my day would take a turn for the better......

Good luck man!
-
I've been waiting for this story.
-
He's killing me! I'm about to go kill the kid's pet pigs! LOL
-
sounding good. I'll be there in a few weeks.
-
One last post tonite....got to catch up on my sleep after a long weekend.
Slowly worked my way to the thick stuff you can see in the last picture and found a good "listening tree." Just big enough to stand behind and listen for any pigs that might be making noise in the swamp. By this time I was really close to the river and could hear the boats. Thick but not too thick.....standing for a couple of minutes when I hear something coming.
Can't see anything so I got my bow ready and waited. Didn't take long for a sow with little ones to pop out on my left about 15-20 yards away. She was leading and got to parrallel to me and stopped. Saw me and decided to beat feet out of there taking the piglets with her.
If you look real close you can see the little ones in this shot

Was just putting my camera away when I heard more footsteps coming straight at me through the swamp.......
-

-
I GUESS WELL HAVE TO LOOSE SLEEP...
-
Nice!!!
-
Arrrgggghhhh!
-
It's Ok guys. It's just a SOAP. Tune in 3 months later and you will feel you haven't missed a thing.
-
well played, sir. But even I think you're dragging it out a little bit...and I like the "Lamb-meistering" approach to story telling! :bigsmyl: :campfire: :clapper: :biglaugh:
-
That tree across the road has heard its share of squealing. A man cant walk through those woods without getting hog poop on your boots.
-
You're killing me! :help:
-
Can't wait to go back. Just waitin to see when in the fall it will be. I'm starting to think I need to go twice a year.
-
Jcar315,
I bet this is not the first time you did this to people. I was trying to find that little one in the picture but could't find it..
You are killing us...
-
I was on that hunt with Jcar315 and had a great time. Ray's place is the " Cats Nuts ". Let me tell you folks, if you don't have a relaxing good time at HH your not living right! Wildlife every where you look and some fantastic hunting property. Jcar should be home from work soon to finish up this thread.
-
Sorry for the delay guys......had to work some OT today. After a call from Ray himself I thought I had better get home and back to posting.
Now where was I.........
-
The footsteps kept on coming and in no time at all there he was.....could not have been more than 15 yards away just ever so slightly to my right when I first laid eyes on him.
He splits the difference in just a few steps and stops. Seems like he sees me but by that time I was starting to raise the bow and he started moving again. At 5 yards I let fly.
Here is the scene from exactly where I was standing when I shot with my arrow just barely visible.

-
Now you're back on track!
-
Hey man, thats cheating. Too close you lucky scoundrel.
-
Sounds like you know that tree Izzy??? The trail around it is indeed muddy from all the traffic.
-
Shot was a little high (even after Ray's instructions and the Shot Placement sticky) so things started getting a little crazy real fast.
Still never left my initial spot behind the tree and took care of the follow up from there.
This is what was waiting for me.

Nice porky!
I understand you folks eat pretty well there as well.......something about ribeyes that would choke a horse....or something like that!
-

-

Felix, Your not going to believe this. I'm a big Bear Archery collector as you know, But my Shakespeare Super Necedah is the best shooting bow I own. That bow has been a killin machine for me!

I had never been happier to see a "hog cart" than that day. Never used one before but I am a quick learner!

That hog huntin' is addictive stuff. We were down there the weekend before you and booked again to go back in June!
-
Great looking picts. Great shooting, Congrats.
-
Hey Squirrel Bait - nice to see you made in through the winter.
Rick - you're right - it is addictive, and it's a whole lot of fun no matter what happens when you're with Ray and Mike.
-
Yep, I know that bridge well. I never saw a hog on the other side of it but I'm glad you did! :)
One thing about Hog Heaven, you can see hogs anywhere. A lot of it is just being at the right place at the right time. Watch the wind and be ready for anything!
Great job!
-
Congrats on the hog! The pics were great too. :clapper:
-
HOG HEAVEN,,,,,, MYSTICAL....CONGRATS ON UR SUCCESS...
-

Thank you again to Andy Lupher and everyone from The Traditional Bowhunters Of Maryland for the opportunity to enter such a fantastic drawing and for being such great hosts.
If you have never been hog hunting Ray is the guy you need to talk to. Super guy to deal with and Hog Heaven is really what it's all about. Big change from chasing deer here in MD but as others have already said....addicting!
Few last pics of my favorite place to be when I am in SC: Hog Heaven and sitting around the campfire talking with friends.
