Yup, That was us... Cade, my dad, and myself...3:30am last Friday mornin'!
We were headed to north Alabama to spend a long weekend with the wonderful Wilson family.
We'd also be joined by some other "key players" along the way. Larry Surtees, Terry Green, and Terry's lifelong buddy Doug Johnson, among them.
This was going to be good! bowshooting, bowhunting Pheasant, world class food, and anything else we could squeeze into a couple days.
We were excited when we left, and it got stronger as we traveled south. With every passing mile, not only was the excitement level rising, the temperature was as well!
We were driving into some of the nicest weather we could have ever expected for this time of year....what a trip this was going to be!
Fast forward...to 5:45 pm central time and we were pulling into the Wilson's driveway to be greeted by great friends Don, Sky, Don's wonderful wife Tammy, Larry Surtees, and of course, little Chloe Beth...the cutest, most personality filled little red-head you'll ever meet!
After a wonderful meal of Chile made by Larry Surtees...we were off to hit the water...

This is gonna be good! :coffee:

Now from Terrys original thread, he showed some flu flus with blood on them so I know there must have been some phesant hunting done. The fishing stories and pics are great, but lets get some of the phesant hunting on,LOL.
Great thread.

Excitement was at an all time high for Cade(and me). He'd never done any bird hunting before, especially with his Big Ed longbow.
It wasn't long before we heard.........Point!
Intensity!
Don and I had talked prior to the hunt starting about letting Cade get the first shot at a bird that might hold tight on the ground. For a ten yearold, that would still be seriously high adventure! I told Terry about our plan and he was all for it!
I'd talked to Cade on the drive to our hunting land about safety, and what to expect on the hunt. I'd also taold him to shoot the bird "dead center". Either from the side, or into his back. This would likely anchor the bird, and kill it quickly.
I was also afraid that he'd feel alot of pressure with everyone watching, and the fact that the bird could flush at any moment......
....he got to where he had a good shot, drew, and

Next point wasn't far away, we got into position. Bird rocketed out of the brush and Doug made a fine shot on a quickly escaping rooster! Longtime buds...

CADE!!!!!!!!
There is always a first and so glad we could all share it.

Great shot Cade!!!! You have accomplished something not many guys get to, taking a pheasant with trad gear!
 :clapper:
-
Great pics!!!
Congrats to Cade. Personally, I have NEVER taken a Pheasant with an arrow...in truth, something that very few people will ever do!
Great job folks!!!
-
That's awesome stuff all the way around! Congrats Cade and great pic of Terry and Larry!
-
Holy Cow...I cant believe Cade got it done on that Rooster. Though I shouldnt be surprised with Curt for a Dad. I dont think I'd get within a foot of a rooster but Cade scored on his first ever. Thats amazing right there.
Congrats Cade. Unreal.
-
Good work Cade!!!! CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
That pic with Curt and Cade is awesome.
Congrats Cade!!! :readit: !

Boy, The nut don't fall that far from the tree..That boys got his Daddy's eye..Good shot shot young man..Hats off to ya..
-
Alright Cade!! The very first animal I ever killed with a bow was a pheasant too. But mine was with a compound, so you've already got me beat! (Plus I was a whole lot older than you)
You're off to quite a bowhunting career young man! :clapper: :clapper:
-
Thanks guys...as you can imagine, I was very, very proud of him! To make it even better, his grandpa(our back-up shotgunner), my dad was there as well to see it all!
I believe it was the very next point flush, when I got lucky and made good on a long crossing shot and knocked one out of the air with my new Morin Banshee longbow!
Don actually has a cool pic of my arrow connecting...
This is what happens when you try to take a pic with a "not-so-dead-yet" pheasant...

Cade on the prowl again...
I may have made the longest shot of the hunt, but without a doubt Terry made the coolest shot!
This bird flushed straight up and decided to fly right over the line of shooters. Terry swung on the bird and waited till hecleared the other shooters and was directly above his head.
I mean he was twisted, leaning back, reverse canted, shooting directly over his head as the bird crossed about 20ft over his head...and he just hammered him in one of the most contorted positions I've ever seen!
As excited as I got over my shot, I think I carried on even more over the shot IU'd just witnessed Terry just pulled off.....it was one of those you really needed to be there, to see it, to appreciate it...
The birds were falling out of the sky with surprizing regularity. Everyone was shooting very well.
Don soon called Cade in on another point. This time on a hen. He once again snuck into position and made a perfect shot....he was on top of the world!
Cade asked if I could mount them for him....what was I gonna say? He's very excited and already has a spot picked in his room. His first mount of something he killed himself!
-
Thats just too cool now he'll be able to relive those shots every time he sees them.
-
That was absolutely outstanding Cade! Very well done young man! A big congrats! Good job on your part too, Dad.
Once again great shooting and pics everybody. Keep'em coming.
-
Funny thing is...after Cade shot... the dog stayed on point...there was another bird in there!
I'll let Sky tell the story of his great wingshot... :clapper:

If there is such a thing as too much fun...you guys came as close as anyone has ever come it looks like!
Great pics, and some impressive shooting!!
-
Well after Cade shot his pheasant, The dog was still on point...A big rooster flushed...I shot..Feathers went everywhere! Cool! I'd never shot a pheasant out of the air before. But it seemed like after that one, I went on a killing rampage. I shot two more out of the air! While going to recover the 3rd one, Conan and I saw another one on the ground running. So we chased after it! Conan and I double teamed this one on the ground. While this was going on, Dad killed a hen on the ground and later killed 2 roosters on the fly. It was a really cool hunt! I'm glad I got to share it with such great people!

Way to go Cade! You the "Little Big Man"!
-
It was a great time had by all -- renewing old friendships and meeting new folks. After the pheasant hunt, we headed back to the Wilson's and did a some visiting, had another magnificent meal (lunch) prepared by the "one and only" Miss Tammy, and then did little shooting on their 3-D range. Terry, Doug, Conan, Steve, and Justin headed out mid-afternoon. We were able to wind-down a little before our last night at the Wilson's and another bow fishing excursion.
It is heartwarming to see firsthand the relationships and the strong bonds that exist between Skyler and Don and Cade and Curt. It is something very special, and the quality time they are able to spend together as "father and son teams" is great!
I am so proud of the new "highnoonhunter" quiver by Bobby Ratliff. I thought I'd share a couple of pics, as it is a true masterpiece. Inside the quiver are arrows made up by "Froggy" (Lanier Patridge). Froggy and I did a little horse trading a while back. I now have 3 dozen Trad Lites with black fletchings and TG reflective arrow wraps. They are gorgeous.

We can't thank Don, Tammy, Sky, and Cloe-Beth enough for all they did for us, the hospitality they shared, the entertainment(Cloe :notworthy:

I echo Guru's comments 2-fold about the entire weekend. A big "Thanks to the Wilson's" -- ya'll went far "above and beyond"!
I don't post a lot, but I read a lot. And every time I read of fathers/mothers and sons/daughters teaming up on this site, it is heartwarming. But to witness first hand 2 close "caring" relationships -- the Don and Skyler team along with the Curt and Cade team -- was very special! It reminded me of a saying that I heard years ago used by the Director of a Boy's Dixie Youth League to all of us prospective managers or coaches wanting us to "CARE" about each and every boy in the league -- "caring" is what's all about and rings true in so many ways on this site!
"BOYS LEARNING TO BE MEN IN THE PRESENCE OF MEN CARING ABOUT BOYS"
-
Tammy and I both thank you all for the kind words......it made her blush!
-
Cade my friend that is awesome, you and Dad make a great team!!! Curt as always very well done!! Cade in the back of the truck that is the best kind of tired there is!!! Congrats to all you guys!! What a blast!! Shawn
