Just wondered if there are other Trad Folks who prefer to hang inside of sleep on the ground. :archer2:
-
I have a Claytor Jungle Hammock that I have used some on backpack trips but if dont pack in very far I prefer my Kelty tent.

I have yet to try out my Hennesy Hammock but am looking forward to it.

Zmoster came up to hunt with me last year and he stayed in one up on the mountain!

When I was in the Philippines we had to sleep in hammocks when in the jungle(odd little critters on the ground at night)had some of the best sleep ever!I still have it and now I want to break it out and take a nap.
-
I love my Hennessey Hammock and when the weather is right it is my favorite way to camp
-
I have an ENO Doublenest that I use camping all the time. In my opinion, it's alot better sleep than the ground.
-
I have used one of my own making and a modified hennessey on the last few elk trips to colorado. It is the only way for me when in rough country. It just takes some tinkering when it gets cold. The high elevations storms can also test your conviction.
-
All the time! Mostly canoe camping trips but even in established campgrounds I'll set up my hennessey to sleep in and set up a regular tent to change clothes and store stuff in.

How small does a good Hennessey set-up fold-up to?
-
Ben,
About the size of a football. Maybe a little larger. You can buy what they call snake skins for the hammock that fit on the tie up ropes. When you want to pack it up you just roll the hammock up around the main line and slide the snake skins down over the hammock then untie from the trees and coil up the whole thing. Its a pretty slick set up

good thread!
My kids and I live in a 'tent' and they all sleep every night in hammocks. like rocks by the way. I would too, but gotta keep the relationship up with my wife...
-
I have a Henney and a ENO use em all the time.
-
I was wanting to go this rout but havnt bit the bullet yet. Good thread would love to see what people have to say about them, favorable or not... However I bet this thead will get pulled as it has nothing to do with trad archery...Just sayin...

I've been looking at Clarks NX250 and finally Ordered it for a Hunt this year on Kauai. I figured it would be better than the ground with all the rain that can happen there. I have not had a chance to set it up yet but I think it will be just the ticket...

i use a hennesy hammock deluxe cause i am 6'6 tall and i love it to bits i even set it up on the ground when no trees are around.

Hammocks are great but there is a learning curve to be had with them.
Clue #1: insulation *under* you (and likely under your hammock) is more important than insulation *over* you.
Clue #2: lay diagonally *not* straight up and down the center line. A diagonal lay (aka Brazilian lay) gets you a nice flat sleep whereas an up-the-middle-lay will curve you like a banana.
-
I even string mine up on the porch. Great place to relax after a long work day.
-
Just got my Hennessy and set it up in the woods behind the house. Man that thing is soooo simple and easy, even the first time after you watch the video on their web site. I'll try it out soon. I have a hammock I keep up on the porch all summer--got it in Brazil a couple of years ago. Brazilians love hammock sleeping. One reason is their homes are generally much smaller than ours and they save space. But the doggone things are so comfortable--the hotels we have stayed in in Brazil often have hammock hooks in the walls for people who prefer to bring their hammock with them. That way they always have their own bed...just like at home.
-
I've got a Black Bird that's great. It has a foot box for asymmetrical lay & a structural ridge line to control sag. COMFY!
I want to go to Brazil!
-
If our weather ever changes I look forward to trying out my Hennessy.
I have put it up a time or two and even started to spend a night in it once while over at the farm.
I ran into trouble,,, for got how to tie it and after wallowing around in it for a few minutes it came untied a let me softly to the ground...lol
I humbly picked up my shoes and went over to the camper and crawled in...lol
God bless,Mudd

I got one that balls up about the size of a softball that I use to use when I hunted places too far back in to come back out for lunch. I'd tie it between two trees, eat lunch and catch a little z's before the afternoon hunt.
-
Clark Jungle Hammock just came in the mail yesterday. No time to mess with it yet.
-
I always wondered about the "sag". I usually sleep on my side.
Would a side sleeper be uncomfortable in one of these for backcountry use?

I'll be trying my new Hennesey out soon.

Nah - I like sleeping on my side in mine. Side or back, you want a diagonal lay by you should be fine.
-
I slept In them in training during my army years. I always carry a hammock, mosquito net, and Kelty tarp with 550 cord. Half the size of a football & perfect in my neck of the woods until late October. Weighs less than half of a hennessey hammock. Probably not as comfortable.
-
I love my Hennessy Asym expedition. Lay down in it diagonally and the entire hammock flattens out. Like sleeping on a cloud!
Discovered this winter that a half inflated Thermarest pad inside the hammock and under your sleeping bag will keep you quite comfortable at temps. just above freezing. When you lay down in it, the pad folds up around you like a taco shell. Without the pad I find that I get quite cold even at relatively mild temps.

Thanks for posting !! Great video and instruction. I was camping recently and I put up my hammock successfully however I like everything I just learned in this video! Gotta get some of those nylon straps !!

There is a hammock forum too if you do a search.
-
Could someone point me in the direction of a hammock for the...erm...'husky' guy?
I weigh right around 280 & most of the hammocks I've come across are rated for about ½ of me.
-
Rob Hennessy will handle you just fine.
Mine handles me and I am in great shape, as long as round is a shape..lol
God bless,Mudd
PS: Be sure to shop around, there are deals to be had that don't come directly from Hennessy Hammocks.
-
Whoop! Never mind :D Just had a mooch around on the Warbonnet site
-
Hennessy will sometimes have holiday sales where you can get a free Scout hammock (their smallest model) with the purchase of a full size one. That's a remarkable deal that I took advantage of when I bought mine a year and a half ago.
-
Hey Rob,
I highly recommend a Warbonnet Black Bird. I've got the 1.7 double layer. With the double layer, you can put foam in between for insulation. Also, the foot box is great.
-
The WBBB is sort of the Cadillac of hammock options right now. Rob - I'm your size and you'd be fine in a ENO Doublenest as well. There are other inexpensive options for us non-petite guys as well.
If you're looking at Warbonnet though, don't press the buy button until you've had a look at the Tree to Tree Switchback (you'd want the 1.9 oz double layer). I don't own one of those yet (swinging an ENO DN) but one of these days, I just might.
-
Another Hennessy Hammock user here. Works great in the late spring/summer/early fall for me, but as the temps drop down and the bugs go away I go back to my Go-Lite Tipi.
I've got a stove all set up for it, I just need to get off my duff and sew the stove jack into it (or rather, have Frassettor's wife show me how to sew it in).
I know some guys can hammock camp in the winter, but I just can't do it - too much weight eaten up in insulation, and my downmat sleeps just as good as my bed at home.
I was thinking about upgrading to a WBBB, but I need to go check out that T2T Switchback. I love options!
-
I bought a Hennessy a few years back, thinking it would be great for elk hunting. for me I found it had pros and cons.
Easy to set up. compact, fairly light. Thats about it as far as pro's, IMO.
Getting in and out of a sleeping bag inside it is like tryint to get toothpaste back inthe tube. No matter how tight I strung it, I could not get a good nights sleep in it. If you are a back sleeper, you're probably fine, but I sleep on my side, and it was very uncomfortable. I woke up tired, stiff and sore.
If I had to get up inth night to pee, repeat the process of getting in and out of the bag.
Its been collecting dust in my gear closet ever since. If anyone wants it, I'll give you a good deal on it.
I've since switchedto a Kifaru Paratipi. Lighter, more room, bombproof, and has a wood stove if it gets cold.
-
Just got home from a kayak float trip with my daughter using HH's and loved it. Slept like a baby. Actually I can't imagine sitting up a tent where we ended up camping at nights due to river rocks.

Small problem there. While its possible to use a sleeping bag in a hammock, most hammock people don't - partly for the reason you mention. A more typical solution is to us a top quilt (or a sleeping bag if you insist) and a sleeping pad or better yet, an underquilt.

Huge problem there. Stringing your hammock tightly is asking for trouble. They should be strung with an appropriate amount of sag - typically the suspension should be strung about 30 degrees down from the tree.
Also, I'm guessing you are trying to lay down the center line of your hammock - bad move. You want to sleep diagonally in a gathered end hammock like your HH.
Have a look at this ...

There's a bit of a learning curve to using hammocks. Luckily the interwebs are full of helpful info. :)
-
I slept in it diagonally like you're suppposed to,er....laid down in it. Sleep was another matter entirely. I've found it a new home. Just didnt work for me. I liked the idea of it, its a pretty neat shelter. Just couldnt make it work out. As far as using a quilt or blanket, that might work fine in warmer weather, but a few 20 degree or less nights and thats right out the window.
The Kifaru paratipi I have works great, weighs about the same as the hammock or less, tons more room, and I even have a small woood stove for it.

I love mine for light weight camping
When the weather is right there is nothing better

I use Hennesy Hammock.
