OK....I've called a meeting this weekend. A St Jude Auction meeting. Rob DiStefano from the North, and Dough Campbell from the North West.
Since the St Jude Auction has become so involved, I thought it best that we 3 meet. However, we are meeting at a location that is very hog infested, and we may have to ward them off to take care of business.
Wish us luck.......
-
:bigsmyl: Good luck to you guys!
-
Good luck Terry, Rob and Doug! Hope you guys can thin them down a bit!
-
Now that sounds like my kind of meeting room!
Good luck Fellas!
Someday I hope to get the opportunity to chase some hogs.
Travis
-
"Ward them off" huh??????????
I don't think Y'all will need much luck.......
:bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:

-
Maybe, just maybe, the pigs will get them and I'll get some pound cake this year. As long as Mikey leaves his knife at home.
This is of course during breaks in the MEETING.

From the text I received a little earlier, the "MEETING" is going very, very good. They haven't adjourned for the evening yet! Can't wait to read "all" the minutes that will come out of the "MEETING"!

Wonder if there as any action around the "water cooler"?

Not sure why this made it to page 2. But back up for the boys.

Gonna have to have patience ......they are catching planes this AM. I don't think they can post from 30,000 feet. :D
-
They both made it home OK....No cell service cept for Rob's flip phone standing IN the HWY, and Doug and I had to stand on one leg and whistle dixie just to make a text...IF we were standing in just the right spot.
Here's a few quoted from the hunt....
"I could see his eye sparkle in the ditch"
"He was FOUR feet away"
"THEY were FOUR feet away"
"He was on a merry-go-round"
"No he didn't squeal, ....he SCREAMED!!!"
"I was surrounded more than once"
"I really don't know what happened"
"Which way did he go?"..."Heck if I know, not sure which way I went !!!"
"They didn't leave till they smelled our shoe laces" !!!
"I'm telling you, it got louder and louder,....so loud I thought a Rhinoceros was about to stampede me"
"I was stalking them, and 5 more came up behind me and just walked right passed me"
"You shot one?"....."Yep"..."How long ago?"..."35 seconds ago"
"I was at half draw when you text me and they left"...."OH, I am SO Sorry"...."It didn't matter, really,...there were 7 more just up ahead"
"What the heck is a muscadine?
"How did you eat all that????"
-
Looking forward to all the stories and pics!
-
this is the third time i have been privileged to hunt this land, and in many ways it's been the best of all three. sharing this experience with terry and doug made it all the more outstanding. most everything seemed to just fall in place and cooperate. the cool evening and warmed up day air temps were just perfect, and a far cry from last year's daily 100F+ steaming heat baths. not many bugs to contend with, save for part of the last day. and the hogs! man alive, they sure were there!
-
There was a pause in the action.....
I enjoyed this skeeter deterant much more than a thermacell as I waited to make yet another of many milk runs...

Man, can't believe I walked right past that shed and didn't see it... ;) I'll get a few pics down loaded soon, didn't take nearly as many as I should have...
It was a great trip, getting to hunt with Terry again and meet Rob and Michael finally was great!! Delanie's pound cake wasn't bad either. ;) We ate like kings the whole time, even with all the walking I think I gained a few pounds.
Got home yesterday evening and was beat after getting up at 1:45 AM MT time to catch a plane. Got up this morning to a foot of new, wet, heavy snow. Got chores to do first thing then I'll be back...
-
last june we had left the head from the much bigger of the two hogs i killed out for the bugs, buzzards 'n' critters to feast on and clean up. terry found it for me as a surprise, it was too cool. doug said to look around that skull area for some of the missing teeth - i thought it'd be like trying to find a needle in a haystack, but doug was right and terry quickly found a whetter and cutter - way cool! later i went back to that area and found a bunch more teeth. i'm gonna clean up the skull and glue back those tusks.

my bow on the ground just before i was about to climb "my" stand, while the evening light was still good.
dusk settled in, and behind my stand, 'bout 70 yards back three hogs wade across the bog, two were really large and i just about could make one biggie out in the failing light under the wooded canopy.
the moon became a flood lamp, illuminating the open road.
while the bog area was too dark to make a good shot, i got down from the tree stand and began the walk back to hook up with terry at the "triangle". the road was lit up good and about 30 yards in front of me came about 7 hogs, a couple in the 80# size. i knelt down at the road edge as they wandered down, closer and closer, and at about 20 yards the larger one posed broadside as i came to full draw and ... my cell phone buzzed. terry had texted me, but i don't think they heard the phone. the wind was up and swirling so they might've winded me, and they just meandered off into the bush, so i let down and waited. sure enuf, another troop come down the road and i waited 'til a 40-50#er went broadside, aimed off the shoulder and dropped the string. the shot was good, the pig squealed loud and bolted into the bush with all the others. i waited about 15 minutes, then slowly stalked back down the road to meet up with terry and go see how doug made out.
we all went back 3 hours later that night and never found a drop of blood or the arrow. went back again the next morning and did a real good sweep of the thick bush and still no arrow or blood. hog 1, rob 0. it happens.

after an embarrassing miss on a nice 40-50# hog the morning of the first day, i did some serious woodshed form work after we had lunch back at camp. oh man, the food was GREAT! terry DO know how to eat GOOD! real good!
anyhoo, i think it was the second evening, during my walk 'n' stalk back from "my" tree stand that i come on a buncha hogs meandering down the road. the lead boy was a nice 80# or so, the light was good, and a lined up for about a 20 yard shot. the arrow *smacked* hard into the broadside pig at about 20 yards or so, he screamed bloody murder and wheeled around like carousel on speed about 4 times and then sped off into the bush following his buddies retreat. during the pig's antics i reloaded got off a "hail mary" shot that just missed his hind quarters. i waited a good 20 minutes, just kneeling down on the road side. i crept along the road and saw a piece of my arrow, busted off at about 3/5ths it's length, with one bright red spot of blood on a feather. (later, terry noticed how the nock was pushed out, indicating the head hit something real hard, perhaps a shoulder bone). i dare not turn on a light and just quietly picked my way back to hook up with doug and terry. we went back much later that night and i did a bad job of marking the kill spot, but knew pretty much the area within a few feet. we scoured it good in the dark of night and bright light of day - no blood trail and no more arrow to be found anywhere. hog 1, rob 0. this is getting to be a bad habit.

Guess I better get with it here, still catching up after going from this a couple days ago...
to a surprise this morning...
Anyway back in the real world now after a great few days in SC.
This was my first time hunting in this southern swamp country so as most of you know it was fun getting to experience new country. Things started out kinda slow for me and although there was plenty of pig sign nothing but a couple gobblers tearing up the woods and lots of squirrels the first day for me. This was up in the drier timber ground where I think the hogs had been not long ago as the bottoms were flooded but with the water receding the hogs had moved out. The giant burgers Terry cooked up that evening sure made me forget any pig woes I was feeling though ;)
Day two was a little better with several pig sightings, the only problem was that for the most part it would have taken several of them to make a meal ;) I’d wound up in the nursery I guess, there were several the same four pounders running around that Terry had run into the night before. Could have thumped a couple mommas but they got a pass this time. Had a fat as a toad 50#er at 15 yards 30 minutes before dark but pigs were coming out of the woodwork literally and I figured there was something bigger going to come along. I could see and hear bunches of em moving up out of the swampy area to the north but they were just a little slow to give me any shot opportunities. No worries I was enjoying myself anyway.
-
Tres Amigos....glad you had a great time!

Awesome pictures and stroies so far.

Hey Rob, whats this about almost getting run over? :saywhat:

late one morning i climbed down from my stand and took a walk west down the road to "the corner" to check it out. about half way there i heard some rumbling way off in the bush to the south, on the left side of the road. it got louder, so i hunkered down on the road edge and waited. this part of the road is fairly open and easy to see into the woods, and as the sound got louder i could see the bushes violently moving about 70 yards or so out! the noise was getting louder and more ominous, like something big and out of control was headed my way.
i'll tell it, it was really kinda scary and sounded like a mad rhino on the charge and i had quick flashes of a 400# razorback tusker coming to get me! within a few seconds 11 jet black hogs come busting through the bush, running about 15-20 yards parallel to the road at top speed. these pigs were all the same size and in the 70# class. anyhoo, i knelt there and counted them off as they went about 40 yards ahead of me and then cut right across my road to the north.
that was it. here and gone. that's pig huntin'!
-
I'll try and add some more pics and stories tonight.
This hunt really meant a lot to me.... :campfire:
-
lets get this to the top. I know some killin happened, lets hear it.
-
good story so far. I will say that imho, any trip with good friends and close encounters, is worth more than a dead hog picture.
Don
-
Very nice! Terry where did you get your fletch cover? :campfire: :archer2:
-
Rob saw like nearly 40 hogs the first day so keeping the hopes up was no problem and Terry was keeping us fat with the great grub. The skeeters were no problem unlike I expected but like Terry said you could tell the hatch was increasing every day.
That cypress and palmetto was some cool stuff, I could see how this country could get in your blood.

The last morning proved kind of uneventful if you didn’t count the two big long beards that walked up on me then putted for 15 minutes after I spooked them or the sow and little pigs that I ran into like three times or… There weren’t many dull moments but along about 10:00 the hours and miles we’d been putting in started to catch up with me and the meet time with Rob and Terry wasn’t till 11:00 so I leaned back against a handy tree and napped till they came thru. Pretty darn nice to be able to kick back and not have to worry about getting something done or being somewhere…
After another great lunch, did I say Terry was feeding us pretty durn well ;) we headed out for the final afternoon hunt. After “seeding” the road it was time to go on patrol. I slipped back down to where I’d been seeing several pigs and there were the sow and piglets again. I eased in close and just watch them till they moved off then climbed back into my tree stand. These same pigs came back thru three more times before dark but the big guys never showed.
I sat till dark then slipped down and headed back up the road toward the truck. I hadn’t gone a hundred yards when I heard sticks breaking beside the road. I just stood and waited to what sounded like a whole herd coming my way. The full moon was still behind the trees at my back but a few stray rays of light were filtering thru. It was still very dark in the brush along the road but I was seeing some faint glowing spots only eight or ten feet away. I was still trying to figure out what the heck I was seeing when one of them blinked! It was the hog’s eyes glowing in the moon light. Kinda like Rob’s Rhinoceros charge with numerous hogs within a few feet in the dark things were starting to get a little un-nerving...
-
I eased my back into the brush on my side of the road and got an arrow on the string but apparently this was too much for the close hogs and they started heading west along the road away from me. They stayed just in the edge of the brush till they were 25 yards or so away then filtered onto the road. After things settled down a little I started after them slowly. They were moving away about as fast as I could move quietly but I was staying with them. The whole bunch of 30 or so finally got to where I’d scattered some corn earlier and hung up acting like vacuum cleaners. I slowly took a half step at a time till within six or eight yards. I could tell from the silhouette that there was a big sow right in front of me but about the time she turned right another big hog, I’m guessing was a boar swung in and took her away into the darker brush but still only 15 or so yards away. I’m sure this was a sow in heat and there were at least two boars harassing her. The wind was perfect and I figured it was just a matter of time till I got a chance as a goodun.
With hogs all around me I was having a ball but then I saw Terry and Rob’s flashlights a hundred yards away coming up the road. The wind was blowing from them toward us so I knew I’d better make something happen quick. A medium size hog stepping into sight just a few yards away and turned to what looked like a perfect angle. Back came the AD and off it went to make a meaty whack in the hog. It squealed and ran a big circle out of sight.
Now I practice shooting in the dark/semi dark a fair bit and it never ceases to amaze me how accurate you can be when you can’t see a thing. I felt good about the hit but knew we’d better give it some time. Well Terry and Rob got to me and asked if I’d heard all the squealing and I said yea I’d caused it just a few seconds ago. Turns out it was the second hog stuck that evening but we decided to head in for supper then track after. We were hoping the big thick pork chops Terry cooked were just a taste of things to come as we devoured them. We headed back out to the shot sight and started finding blood immediately then after 30 yards or so my arrow. It was immediately obvious that we probably weren’t going to find a hog at the end of the trail. I’d basically gotten the broadhead depth penetration. The big three blade VPA Terminator had apparently hit right in the heavy shoulder bone. We went ahead and follow the decreasing blood trail for a hundred yards or so into the swamp but it eventually petered out.
That was pretty much the conclusion of the hunt with a big day on Sunday of cleaning up and packing. I didn’t get a hog killed but I still had a blast getting to experience South Carolina. I can’t thank Terry enough for inviting me along and Michael for furnishing the hunting spot. Getting to spend time with great friends, eat like Kings and see new country is what it’s all about folks.
-
Awesome mate .... Ain't it cool gettting close on Pigs in the fading light . Maybe the best hunting experience going 'round.
-
Due to finding out one of my my friends and TG Member is having surgery tomorrow....I haven't had time to post....but will get back at it this evening.

The above quote is what it's all about.
Them SC hogs got the best of me last year Doug but the hunt was one to remember. They don't get any better than Michael!
-
I had so many encounters its hard to believe I never got a shot...and had so many in range that I couldn't even see. Yes...and I was one of the ones that was 'surrounded' more than once. Once I had a hog to the east at 5 feet, and one to the west at 9 feet. Didn't know which one was going to set out on top of me 1st...and neither did. But I was on serious point let me tell ya.
Here was the boarders on most of my milk run....

Morning Killie, I was shooting my new Toelke Whip, take-down, pulling 57#, AD Trad heavies with VPA terminators. Really nice shooting bows and Dan who is a Sponser here is a great guy also.
Can't remember what Rob was shooting and Terry had a whole car full to pick from... ;)

my t/d longbow "magua" hasn't changed in years, still the same 62" mohawk, 55@29, tempered 'boo cores and veneers, coco riser pierced with bocote.
this was the BEST hog hunt i've ever had, even though no meat made it to the freezer ... greater still than last year's hunt at this same venue where i killed two. it's all about the journey and i couldn't have had a better pair of hunting buds than terry and doug. don't get no better'n that in my book. hope we can "bidness conference" again next year.
