Boated a few miles, then hiked ~17 miles round trip the other day, hoping to find some black bears on the hillside. No go, a bit early where we went (as you'll see in the pics), and pretty snotty weather. But thought I'd put some pics up.
Hind foot track from a good brown bear at the start of the hike, the pad of the rear foot is ~ 8 1/2" long, so probably around an 8 1/2 foot bear, a good one. Thats my size 10 sneaker boot (with my hind foot in it) in the pic, and I'm partially covering a moose track with my foot.

Crossed a few avalanches going in and coming out. Heard the rumble of 6 or 7 more, and saw a few happen, but nothing close to us (phew). Here's a couple pics of some older "slides" we crossed.

And a pic of the opposite hillside that gets more exposure, has some green on it that will be good feed for the bears. You can really see the rain, fog, and scud in this pic.

Good fun and good exercise. And oh yeah some stumps and clumps made good practice on the way in.

That is some nice looking country, I'd like to visit there sometime. Impressive track also.

Avalanches, 8 1/2' Bears? I reckon that'll add a bit of excitement to a casual stumping stroll! :scared:
Great pics, Thanks for sharing!

Yeah Jim, when I first saw the track I thought man that's from a big guy, but they measured a bit smaller than I would have guessed. And of course the hide size is just an estimate, he could be a fair bit larger. Tracks sure were fresh as you can see, still crisp even with the rain. Probably from late that night or early that morning.
