Went up scouting this weekend, my season starts in less than a month. Saw 400+ elk, a few deer, a fox and zero sheep. This was my second time up and have yet to see a sheep. Take a look at a few pics, it is going to be a great hunt. That is Jimscol glassing.

Well, you sure have the right guy giving you a little glassing help. Have you looked at the BP's yet?
Love those Columbine's! There were tons of Indian Paintbrush out during my hunt.

I am still jealous of all you guys that drew sheep tags this year. What a great hunt that is. Looking forward to the sheep stories coming up from this in TBM

Great pics, thanks for sharing.
Reminds me of my last years scouting trip for sheep, except I saw more griz than sheep and elk. Lots of darned old wolf sign as well.
Good luck on your hunt, sheep live in God's country. Take plenty of pics.

Good luck, what beautiful country. Amazing that you will be hunting sheep in a month. Is that S-12? I find it interesting how high those elk go to hang out, sometimes looking DOWN on the sheep.
-
Beautiful....I'm going on my first Elk hunt opening week in Co., can't wait to hunt the high country.

TOTALLY AWESOME!
BRINGS BACK MANY MEMORIES OF MY TWO SHEEP HUNTS!

Great pics. I wish you the very best on your sheep hunt, and thanks for sharing.

Gorgeous up there, Mark. Best of luck on the hunt. It will be an adventure regardless of the outcome. In hunting, as in life, it is about the journey, not the destination.

It's just a matter of time before you find them Mark. Good Luck!!

Thanks for the pics Mark. Did you get any naps while you were there? I enjoyed your recent article in TBM.
Kyle
-
You'll find them and we'll all be looking for the article in TBM. I read your Elk Hunting article while camping on Pinon Mesa with my daughter and grandsons not too far from their Grand Junction home.
-
Great pic's. Best of luck on your hunt.
-
Good luck Mark,don't give up!
-
Hang in there Mark, up here in MT I did 21 days of hard hunting before seeing my first shootable ram. It was a fantastic time, getting there is half the fun!
-
Nice pics, and good luck on the hunt. Maybe there's a ram at the end of that rainbow...
-
Thanks for the great pics, and keep on looking, I'm sure you'll find them!
There's a lot of awesome country in this state that I've never seen before. I gotta get out more.
-
Is this public or private land?
Either way it is beautiful
-
Mark
Great pictures man, thanks for sharing them with us. Some amazing country you will be exploring, and don't worry, I see sheep in your future....just tap your heels together and say "bottom of the heart, bottom of the heart"
 :biglaugh:
-
Mark -They are probably running everwhere, you're just to busy taking NAPS!LOL! don't get to worried, When I scouted I saw rams every day. When season opened I hunted 7 straight days without seeing a sheep.
If you want you can ask the DOW if you can gift your tag to me, that would save you all of that stress.... :saywhat: LOL!
-
Kyle, I did get a little nap one day.
Canyon, I live just below Pinon Mesa in Glade Park, next time you are in Junction let me know and we can shoot the nice range up here.
aw this is all public land.
Jake I am thinking center of the lungs and Jason, I am not quite ready to give up my tag yet.
-
Greetings Mark!
The solution to your challenge is.....a NEW bow!
:saywhat:
The NEW bow trick seems to have been effective in past years.
Keep the wind in your face!
Shoot straight, Shinken
:archer2:
-
Awesome country there! Good luck on your hunt.
-
Beautiful pictures of some awesome country sir! Good luck to you!
-
That is the high-life right there! Keep looking for those sheep, they are out there. Good luck!
-
You guys are going to ruin the image of hunters with those wildflower pics. What are you, a bunch of nature lovers? ;)
-
Sheep hunting is a hunt that is on the bucketlist along with I bet alot of TG'ers. Being a flatlander I would have to go a week early just to get used to the high elevation. I have had the sickness and want ot avoid that! Those pictures bring back memories of backpacing in the mountains as a kid. Sitting here in the Texas heat, dreaming of those mountains in the west.....
-
Mark, don't get discouraged. When I had that tag, I only found sheep on one scouting trip during the summer. Then 2 days before the season they showed up right where they were suppose to be. Stay focused on learning the country - how the mountains tie together - where you can go safely, and where you can't. There aren't any secrets about sheep country in Colorado.
By the way, you spent your time on the wrong side of the peaks this last weekend near as I can tell from your pictures. Come in from the Buena side, up 4 mile creek, and check out the South side of West Buffalo and I think you will find what you are looking for.
Also, make sure to spend a weekend if you can out of Leadville checking out Empire Gulch, Iowa Gulch and that country.
Call me if you have questions or need any other tips - I'm happy to help.

about as good advice as you can get there mark...
talk to Todd he is as good as they get..
welcome to sheep hunting, you thought this was all about drawing the tag???---wrong--- this is going to put you on a whole new level, but you have to earn it.. it aint easy...but it can be done, it has to light a fire in your belly like you have not seen since a teenager... you will either like it or hate it.. but knowing you- there is no stopping you.. put your resources to work, people will help you, my first suggestion is ...TTT... talk to Todd

Thanks Todd, I remember everything you told me at the shoot and I will get exhausted before I get discouraged.
I picked the unit because so many CTAS guys have hunted it. Lots of good info.
How is your scouting going Scott?
-
Beautiful pictures. Hopefully the sheep will show up, too!
-
Awesome pics. Thanks for sharing. Good luck on your hunt.

Mark
I'll pull up my thread, so people can keep them straight.
bottom line I have lots of snow right now where I want to hunt a ram, going to be interesting, never been this much snow in Northern CO.
