Title: Kansas bunny stomp
Post by: KellyG on August 26, 2011, 08:12:00 AM
Who would be interested in a bunny hunt; say in late Jan? I want to post this now just to see who might be interested and so I don't forget with the excitement of redeploying home sometime soon. I think the Milford lake or Tuttle Creek lakes would be good bunny ground and lots of public hunting. I could provide the hot coco. Heck I am blessed with a deer lunch would be on me too. I know it is really early yet but I think dropping the bug in yalls year now might get some of you thinking about it.
Happy hunting and God Bless,
Kelly

A couple of years ago we did one at the north end of Perry near Valley Falls. It was a blast. I don't remember who cooked up all the Venison that cold morning, but it was melt in your mouth delicious! Count me in, unless something come up I'm not expecting.

Sign me up twice!!

I was at the Bunny Stomp Ksbowman mentioned and he is right - it was a blast.

Please keep me in the loop.  If I don't have a shootable bow, I will serve as a Human Beagle.

Bretto, I don't know of anyone who hunts them at all around here. I guess the bobcats and yotes keep the down but I have seen lots of bunnies and tree rats, I bet some will be taken.
If you did not have to buy a FT Riley license I would say we would go there, I know there are lots of bunnies, squirrels, yotes, cats and birds. Not to mention deer and elk, but those will be out of season buy then.
I hope to see all of you there, it will be great to share a camp fire with other hunters for  a change.

bretto - YES I had a bad nock on a cane arrow and cut my bowstring.  I also missed the bag target at 15 feet and... probably a bunch of other embarrassing stuff.

I resigned myself long ago to be 'entertainment value' rather than 'productivity value'.

Cannot wait.

Oh Wait! do we have a date yet?
Title: Re: Kansas bunny stomp
Post by: KellyG on September 26, 2011, 03:16:00 PM
nope not yet va, it will be in January sometime, I figured most would be chasing deer, and I would be spending most of my time with my family and chasing a few deer until then. But if yall have a date in mind put it out there. Does not hurt, I just will not know much until I get back and spend a few months with my wife and kids.

Well I hope it is a sign of things to come but I have been jumping bunnies on the Fort where I deer hunt. I just hope the other public areas off the Fort are holding them. If so it should be really good.
Title: Re: Kansas bunny stomp
Post by: KellyG on November 24, 2011, 11:36:00 PM
Well I have a large deer roast that I will put on the smoker for the hunt but since it is from a big ole rutting buck, the burgers might be a better Ideal.

I have been seeing a lot of bunnies around, I just need to go out and check the areas we can hunt. Hope all are having as good a season I am.

I passed on a big bunny last week near Valley Falls.  10 yards.  I hope the yotes don't get him.  He was a big one.
Title: Re: Kansas bunny stomp
Post by: KellyG on November 30, 2011, 08:55:00 PM
Well there are camp grounds but I was thinking a day hunt. Plus if you just need a place to park a camper I have plenty of room, and some floor space.

Tuttle or Milford, I may try and get some private property. I will try and scout out the areas in Jan just to see where I find the most bunnies. I seen 3 bunnies today in fact.

I will throw a deer roast on the smoker, for lunch.
Title: Re: Kansas bunny stomp
Post by: sweeney3 on November 30, 2011, 10:55:00 PM
If it's around Tuttle or Milford there is camping avaliable.  Bring a tent/camper/tarp, etc.  For what it's worth, Pot 1 over in Pot county has some rabbits on it.  There are also several WIHAs (specifically the one over in north central Pot Co) that will still be open that are good sized and have some rabbits that I've chased before.  And the occasional Prairie Chicken too.

If I get to make it up from Arkansas I'll camp somewhere and make a couple days of it.  However it goes, I won't be hurting for stuff to do up in the Manhattan/Randolph/Wamego/Westmoreland block.

Just throwing out ideas.

Title: Re: Kansas bunny stomp
Post by: KellyG on December 01, 2011, 11:47:00 PM
Ok Here is what I was thinking. We meet up at my place. I live in the Riley so I am between milford and tuttle. My neighbor is a game warden and I have him on the look out for good bunny populations also.

I will get out after the rifle deer season and walk some of the public areas that I know of. Heck we could hit milford in the am eat lunch and the hit some of the tuttle areas.

If any of you have a camper and want to park it along the side of my house I have room. If in a pinch you want to sleep on the couch let me know.

I will put a roast on the smoker for lunch.

I am a fly by the seat kind of person on things like this, so I will come up with a loose tentative plan. It can and will most likely change once we have first contact with the bunnies.

any suggestions, questions or must put them up here.

I have not made it out to the areas yet Paul. I have been trying to get my son his deer. I have areas in mind just need to go look.

I did do a test run on my smoker with a deer roast and it turned out oh so good. I used a onion rub, plus it was back strap so that helps.

I have a big neck roast I am going to smoke. I may bake it the night before and let it smoke while we hunt. Mine is a wood so I have to load it up with the wood and let it do its thing.

I am really looking forward to the hunt. Less then a month to go.

Thanks for the pics!

That looks like good bunny habitat, and one of my favorite fishing holes is to the right of the last pic, on the bend in the river.

Never been on top that bluff, a neat perspective, Thanks.

I have walked that bottom a little and hunted that creek some in the past. I have never been up on this piece. I did find a great place for a stand that I could canoe too.

I went to RMSG (Rocky Mountain Specialty Gear) Saturday and matched some arrow to one of my Silvertip just in time for this hunt. Got some VPA bunny busters, those look like they'll put a hurting on a bunny.

I don't have a preference on a meeting time. I'm heading that way a day or two early so I can cut some Osage. Directions would be a good idea. I know where Ft. Riley is, so it shouldn't be to hard to find right? I can't wait! Thank you Kelly for putting together!

For what it is worth, the new Kansas Monster Buck Classic is that weekend in Topeka.  The KBA is going to be there too.  I could see making Topeka and the Bunny Harvest a package deal!

Also- could we re-post this Bunny Hunt with a New Post- with details.  Kind of hard to get through 8 pages to figure it all out.

Hope to see you guys

looks like I am counting about 8 of you so far. If you don't post here come on anyway, I am just trying to get and Ideal of how many so I can insure I got enough meat. I am not a beer drinker so if you want that bring it. I should have some sweet tea and sodas. If you have side you want to bring do so, if not don't worry about it. I know some are traveling a few hours.

I will start the roast in the oven, then put it on the smoker in the morning just before we leave out to hunt.  It is lager then I remember so I want to be sure it is ready for lunch.

I can't wait to see yall this weekend. Oh let me know if any are wanting to come up the night before.

That is ok lablover, if more show up that is ok. I was just trying to make sure I have enough for lunch but the roast I have I just weighted on my fish scale at about 8lbs. That is less then half the neck off that buck.

I am getting excited. I really am not a seasoned trad hunter yet so I will be asking a lot of questions from yall about quivers and such.

Man it is this weekend awesome.

Ok so this is going to be my first bunny stomp, and I was thinking... Do you wear a bird vest to carry the bunnies/squirrels in while we are hunting? Probably a dumb question but I'm getting ready to head east and was wondering what you guys use to carry the animals while we hunt.

Well, to be honest Jon, on the last one none of us saw any rabbits...
But bringing a game vest would be a good idea.
Optimistic... but a good idea.    :)

I will be wearing my orange vest.
Oh I cheated tonight and just pulled this out of the oven. I will put it on the grill tomorrow to smoke in some more flavor.

Ok I think we had fun, and no bunnies were harmed in the gathering of this bunny stomp.

We saw 8 or so wabbits in the AM and 4 shots were taken, and about 7 quail were jumped.

Here is a pic of the happy hunters at the end of the AM hunt minus me in the pic.

I got a pic with me in it minus 2    (http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e383/gillk/IMG_0300.jpg)

Here is the line to my right in the AM.

then to my left.

Oh the money shot.

There was also a duck decoy that met the same fate.

But the best shot had to go to Paul for his killer shot on a little yellow rubber ducky we jumped from the thick brush from the edge of the field.
Thanks all for coming I really had a blast.

KellyG and the Non-rabbit shooting gang -

I had a wonderful time and ate more than my share of the food.

Jon - keep in mind that Kelly will claim your quiver and arrows were in my truck and I will claim I left them at his place.  No telling who really has them but don't let Paul slip under the radar.

Maybe late March or early April we can wand up your way and walk around a little.

I'm sure we can find a ton of beer cans at cheney. Not sure of rabbits, or duck decoy's. Kelly if we'd had a fire we would have never made it back out for the afternoon.
