Title: Which 2 pc? A flip of the coin perhaps.
Post by: V I Archer on August 30, 2011, 07:34:00 PM
I've been thinking lately that a 2 piece longbow may be in my future.  Living in goat and sheep country a two piece may be more practical for the hike in and out than my current 69" Sky bows.  I, as most guys here like what I like and have particular taste.  I definetly want a tool-less design, don't want to misplace a wrench on the way up a goat mountain in December.  Not really sure I trust the conection hinge and not really in love with those roll up rubber grip things.  I want a "classic" d shaped bow at brace, again, not really loving the radical reflex designs.

Tough part though may be in the grip.  I was entertaing a Hill half breed but have never shot a straight grip. Can I get a locator or even a  slight dish with a sleeved take down?  The other option I have thought of is the Bama Bow, which appears to meet all my desires.

Thoughts???

I have been pondering the same thing for a long time too. I also like the Bama Bows TD system. Northern Mist uses the connection Hinge but you could get whatever grip you like.

This is a two piece. With a composite sleeve there are many grip options. on my personal bows I use beavertail wrap.

I like bamabows take down. I have been to Nate's and he has his take down system in a bow that is 102# and it is still tight.

I have a 60# Centaur 62 inch with the connexion hinge for packing in the mountains that is flawless. I sold my 3 piece and never regretted it. I WOULD BUY ANOTHER ANY DAY!

Some bowyers offer a locator grip in a steel sleeve style TD.Fox archery does and so does Whippenstick Custom bows,Wallace Royal Longbow.I believe they use bondo or something similar to shape the grip and wrap it in leather.

You can get a located on a Whip, it's a bow bolt system.  R/D though

I would give a long hard look at a Wes Wallace Royal.  Mild R/D longbow with the steel and brass sleeve systems.  My family has five of them and they are all a tight fit after tons of shooting.  Just a warning though, his bow while works of art, are not cheap.

I have found the sleeve fit system to be excellant and it is offered by several bowyers . The extra weight in the riser gives the bow a solid feel and the riser can be built up to what ever grip[ style you prefer.
I shoot Fox bows and I have 3 that use this system ,you could give Ron a call and Im sure he would be happy to talk you through some options.

I believe that Dan Toelke offers his Super Ds with the Bowbolt system as well as his d/r Whip long bow and one piece Chinook recurve.

I have a 2 piece Mohawk for sale right now. It has the connexion hinge, which I have had on several bows and am completely happy with. There is no bump on the front of the riser like some.

Another vote for a Great Northern Critter Gitter with the jackknife takedown system. I have a one piece Critter Gitter and love it, but now I want one with the jackknife option.

I like the Critter Gitter with the Jacknife. The Fox longbow and Royal by Wallace are nice with the steel sleeve.I also love Ken Rohloffs single carbon Whippestick with the steel sleeve. He does a nice grip with it.Its very very fast and easy on the eyes. The Big jim buffalo bow is also nice wth the locket socket. Some of these wont have a true D shape when strung. But they shoot very nice and all require no tools and are reliable and strong systems

I have a Big Jim Buffalo 2 pc and a Toelke Whip 2 pc. Both bows  work very well.  The buffalo is seamless, the whip is not.

I bought a used Mahaska longbow with the Connexion hinge. I was leary about the hinge idea, thinking I might feel some flex at the string rebound. Notta - nothing. It folds as easy as can be and is rock solid once strung. Since it's only on the back of the grip, the belly side is wide open to interpretation. Several bowyers use it. I love it.

awbowman- PV builds some VERY nice bows and I suspect this is one of his own designs. Didn't want to butt in, but I didn't know if he would see your question.  I'd suggest PMing him if you want to know more...

That system that Big Jim uses is just the ticket. You can have a beavertail grip on his bow and never know its a take down.

Take town Thunderchild is on my list later on when i get to shoot one.

I hate to sound like a broken record...

But the Black Widow 2-piece longbow is a tremendous bow.  Pretty pricey, but they are very well-made, dependable, consistent bows.  I have one that I bought new in the spring of 2011, and I like it more -- literally -- every day I shoot it.  I can't imagine getting rid of it.  I can imagine toying with other bows someday, but always want to keep this one.  I have shot a bunch of different bows, too, so have a lot to compare it to.

Here's a link to a video I posted on YouTube.  Just posted for fun, but you'll get to see this fine bow that BW made for me.  It has spalted sycamore veneers, and a cocobolo nose (instead of red phenolic) on the back.

Black Widow uses the carbon-fiber sleeve take-down system, and it's easy to take apart and put together, no tools.

P.S.  I should mention right off the bat that I know I'm not the world's greatest shooter!

Carbon Sleeve X many. I've had one and think it's the best system out there. I like my MOAB with the hinge , but they nice thing about the Carbon sleeve is it's fast and you can't tell it's a two piece once together.
I'd consider the Big Jim Buffalo, it's R/D but not radical.

Another vote for BamaBows. Nate's bows are serious shooters and his carbon sleeve is perfect.

Big Jim's Thunderchild t/d is absolutely seamless. No one would know it is a t/d unless you showed them how it is put together. Very sweet.
