Well since elk season opened a few days ago and Uncle Sam has me hanging out in Cali until late in the month. I figured one might as well make the best of the trip.
This is some Beautiful country. This particular location has some steep steep steep terrain.

If you follow this draw all the way down and to the left side of the frame that is where this story will continue.

Pardon my bad photography My cammera and I are having a disagreement. So a lot of these are cell phone pictures.

Cool pictures!
where is the first taken from?

The game here is plentiful. If coyotes were not more or less safe here I would never get a chance to hunt anything else. There has not been a day yet I have seen less than five.

I have been wondering since I got here why the good bucks were hard to find. Then I saw this and thought that explains everything.

I guess this guy did not get his wings yet. This is right after I got busted at 27 yards by trying to rush things a little to much.

There are plenty of these around too. This is my best one so far.

Really though I wanted to kill a pig. I passed several the first week I was here. Not thinking that the deer season would really mess up the pig hunting. Well it did. I went from seeing 8 to 10 a day to one if I was lucky. So last nights I decided no more passing and at the very bottom of a canyon(the picture from above). I was able to get this piggy.

Interesting part of this is a rifle hunter acctually found this pig. It was an area I have been seeing a lot of action and sing in. When I approached it there was a rifle hunter at the edge glassing the bottom. Not wanting to mess up his hunt as he was there before me I made a loop and stopped to speak with him. He showed me the pig he had spotted and said he was not wanting to carry a pig out of a canyon today but he woudl stay and watch it for me if I wanted to make a stalk. He watched the whole thing unfold. When I got back to my truck he was there waiting for me. He was more than impressed with the taking of a pig with a recurve. I gave him my number and offered to help him drag a deer any day.

Randy,
Wow ... California deer drink Red Bull? Hunters are hunters and it was cool of the guy to let you go after the pig. Good on you for offering to drag for him.
-
Nice! California has some beautiful country for sure. Congrats

Love your pics and story.

Nice one Randy, way to go.

What part of the state are you in? Must be A zone somewhere near Santa Cruz.
The cool fog of the coast is a pleasure when it is 3 digits everywhere else.
-
Good to see your out and about. Putting the hurt on the Cali animals now. Atleast the WY elk feel safe, for now
-
Thanks for sharing with us Randy.
Your pictures are just fine buddy. Don't sweat it.
Congratulations on your pig and new found friend.

Great Job Randy!

Congratulations Randy. I wish I would've taken advantage of the hunting in California when I was stationed there. The fog is beautiful in pictures but horrifying if your driving. Hoping for continued success for you.
-
Do this mean the elk are safe in area 38 this season?

It's not WY, but you sure know how to make the best of it Randy! Congrats!
-
beautiful place to hunt and congrats for the pig !
-
Wow. Once got to see the Tule Elk North of San Fancisco up on the coastal reserve. They were pretty cool with the Ocean way beyond them. Guy told me if I wanted to see "pretty" Cali, go up around Redding. Never got that far North though in my short visit.
That is some erie country and pics. Very neat!
Nice job showing a gun hunter how it's done!

Vandenburg is supposed to rival most private ranches around here. I'm just south of ya in Santa Barbara. Never knew about Vandenburg when I was active. I would have loved to hunt there.
Have fun, though it looks like you surely are.

Great story and pictures Randy! Congrats and thanks for sharing.

Nicely done in all respects. I do not much of CA, but I do miss pigs. Remember the hunts on Catalina? Great goat and pigs. California charges a lot just to come over to chase pigs, while it used to be reasonable for the 5pig booklet. Ahh nostalgia is not was it used yo be

Great story, thanks for sharing.

Nice pig those blacktails are tough to hunt. We do not have a shortage of coyotes.Should of tried to sqeek them in. Love the coast range.
Cool pictures.
