I have a question, how can you sit pre-determined stand sites? I mean I would not want to mess up my hunting area by sitting stands  with a bad wind.  I would think it would be better to sit on the ground in a quick set-up than to hunt the wrong wind. Shawn

Post by: adkmountainken on September 13, 2011, 03:48:00 AM
well as a group we only have 2 days to hunt. have you ever tried to place 10 hunters in to good wind? we are going to sit and hope for the best, weather will do what it wants but we will be a huntin!

sound like a good time for friends to meet and get a few hours of hunting in. The ned game is not taking a deer but I think it is more in new and older friends getting together to share the hunt and fellowship.   have a great time and post photo's...

Ill take the ground pal. I sure wouldnt mind a spot I could do a little roaming in without messing someone else up. Last years ridge sure was cool.
Title: Re: putting together a small hunt
Post by: Cyclic-Rivers on September 13, 2011, 09:03:00 AM
I'm good wherever but like Izzy, would prefer the ground so I can sleep and not roll out of the stand.
Shawn,

this hunt is about a gathering and the cameraderie of sharing stories and camp. Killing and seeing deer is wayyyyy second behind eating Nate's Cooking  :readit:

Ken,

So far so good. Im still trying to work out the details with work, but I should be heading up on Saturday morning. I will be working Friday for sure. I will most likely leave camp on Monday evening, but more to follow on that...

When will you go to smoke pole? Im trying to work that as well.

  :pray:   That this all comes through for me.

Title: Re: putting together a small hunt
Post by: Shawn Leonard on September 13, 2011, 07:36:00 PM
Charlie, I kind of knew you would say that, but the point of any hunt and even my bunny hunt is to kill something. The other stuff is the added bonus. I have thought of doing a bowhunt here at my place and I have over 63 stands available but would only want several guys as I do not want guys sitting stands with the wrong winds, it just would hurt my chances later on, for what? So I could say I got together and had fun with a bunch of guys, I can do that on a piece that is not my hunting area. I just think Ken may be sacrificing a lot for thsi hunt. Shawn
Title: Re: putting together a small hunt
Post by: Shawn Leonard on September 13, 2011, 07:41:00 PM
Should also said, I could place 15-20 guys on the 130 acres I hunt and all would have a good wind, may only be 20 yards apart in some areas but all would have a good wind, that is why i place all the stands I do, many are only 20 yards from each other but than I can hunt an area whatever wind I happen to get. Shawn

If it was strictly about killing something I would have quit a long time ago. I have have been doing this for over 43 years and have yet to kill anything with a Traditional Bow, partly due to where I hunt and deer numbers. But it's not all killing!! One of the best hunts I ever went on was in Illinois {Pike co.}. Never took a shot but saw 5 trophy bucks in 3 days { all over 150 }. That was a real hunting thrill. But everyone has their own thoughts and ideas on what is a good hunt!

well lets see if i can explain. to get everyone together, all like minded and traditional is a GREAT thing and i really enjoy it. if you are my friend you know that my friends mean the world to me and i would give ya the shirt of my back. i enjoy this kind of hunt, YES it will be difficult to put a deer on the ground whith so much movement, people and wind but it is by NO means immposible. i do plan on making a couple 2 or 3 man pushes to get the deer moving.  i really look forward to this, i will be hunting alone or with 1 and 2 guys the rest of the week. the are we are hunting is roughly 3000 arces of state land, public land and posted of which i have a ot of permission.

not sure how to word it but this area is NOTHING like hunting the Southern zone, it is work to SEE a deer and this is the hunting i LOVE.

I dont believe theres a single deer on that mountain (I Think Ken And His Lacky, Domestic Death put out the tracks and made the rubs) but Im starting to consider that hunt a kick off to the best time of the year. Serious deer hunting is around the corner. To me it isnt much more than a stump shoot with some good dudes with a 1 in a million chance at a deer. Almost got a biiiiig old gobbler last year and brought home a bushy tail which I would never have shot if I thought there was a chance of a deer strolling by but the thing I remember most is being surrounded by a bunch of hill billies with stickbows in hand on top of a beautiful mountain in some beautiful country, it was cool! Come along Shawn, Im driving this time.    :campfire:

this will be the 4th time i have held the hunt. on the first hunt i missed a big doe at POINT BLANK! on both of the next hunts i believe we saw around 10 deer with a nice buck trotting by Woodchucker. it is not impossible it is just hard and ya need some luck. Horation had 2 deer just in front of him and it was his first time EVER bowhunting deer.

Ken is a class Guy & anybody that has ever met him will tell you so. Getting an animal is great but not the only thing. I wish I could have just one more hunt with my dad. It would be the most treasured day of my life even if we never saw a deer. It is looking better for me for Sunday Ken, but not quite clear yet.

Forest and Stream

Wide and far the woods extend,
Leaf-laden branches graceful bend;
The oaks, like great tents, outspread
Their verdant canopies o'erhead;
The fir, the hemlock, the pine
Their interlacing shoots entwine;
The cypress of the swampy glade
Enweaves a dark impervious shade;
The slender willows stoop to lave
Their tassels in the rushing wave;
The chestnuts cast their treasures down,
Their opening burrs, their nuts of brown;
And thick the cluster of the grape
With purple wealth the alders drape,
And on the forest kings unfold
Their draperies of green and gold.

Each river, each transparent stream,
Amid the woodland vistas gleam;
They toss with foam where rocks impede
The arrowy swiftness of their speed;
They glide with smooth, unruffled sweep
Where flow their currents dusk and deep,
And fathomless abysses hide
The sand and shells that pave the tide.

Now deep in forest glooms the deer
Bound in exultant, swift career;
They leave the covert of the glade
When earliest rosy dawns invade;
They pause to nibble the sweet grass,
In bosky dale, in mountain –pass;
They stop to drink the sparkling fount
That trickles from the rocky mount,
Or lit at noontide to repose
Where tall the fern luxuriant grows;
But when the yelpings of the hound
Athwart the sleeping shades resound,
And when the hunter’s whooping cheer
And winding horn rise near and clear,
Quick from their sheltering haunts they spring,
And fly like fleet birds on the wing.

Forest and stream! I love to trace
Your inmost depths, your watery race;
I love your dense, primeval shade,
O forest monarch! To invade.
I love, O grand, majestic Stream!
To wander where your ripples gleam,
To plunge beneath your ice-cold breast;
To seek the wild-fowl that infest
Your wooded shores; to spread the sail
In gusty breeze or howling gale;
To tale the springing trout that skim
Your face, or an abysses swim;
In storm, in calm, in shade, in shine,
My hear, my steps to thee incline.
No haunts of earth so fair I deem,
As forest-side and banks of Stream!

also there is a ridge where i do all my turkey hunting. i will be putting someone there this time. good deer trail, AWESOME turkey woods! Charlie can attest to that. if anyone would like to sit there just let me know, you will be the farthest away from anyone. the draw back is its a steep climb. lots of coyotes there as well.

Usually the Troops don’t want the First Sergeant sleeping in the same area as them, as it makes for sleepless nights, but in this case I’ll make an exception. I’m still making a push to leave Friday night. I don’t expect to arrive till 11ish if I do. If not, I’ll meet the group in the dark in front of Moms on Saturday morning.

any chance on getting the white house free for the campers? Can light it up with lanterns if need be.  I have never seen the inside but have heard you mention about the possibility of using it in such a situation.

also was running a few ideas around. was wondering if it is better to do a long day hunt and come out around 2, enjoy the afternoon and have a big dinner and relax. or do a shorter hunt, a small luch go back in for a late hunt and come out for dinner? personaly i think a long hunt would be better as 2 hunts would be A LOT of people moving around but i am game to go with the flow, what ca think????

Charlie,

I'll have to see if I have anything left of the moose kielbasa, sticks and sausage that I had made by the Amish in PA.  The Denton Hill crowd put a serious dent in that stash!  It pretty much disappeared as fast as Jeff Springer could slice it with a "tippit" knife.

I'll do some searching in the freezer.

Leave the Dilla Killa alone. I heard that Domestic Death is the youngest and only hunter to complete the "Barn Yard Slam". I never thought him to be a glory hound until I saw him on the cover of "Killers Of The Corral", a new mag that caters to them type folks. He was posing with what looked like the AFLAC duck and that 90" bow of his.

Nate, I can toss together a few items and get lucky once in a while. But I always hate the idea of cooking while i am supposed to be hunting. Typically hunting camp is pre-made dishes that warm easily and quickly.

Tonight, remember that old Gobbler I killed on the hill?  I took his last breast cut it in half and pounded it flat, made a sausage/cranberry stuffing, spread over the top and rolled into a roast. I was afraid he meat would dry too much so I covered in bacon. Roast over low heat for 1.5 hours and then basted, covered with aluminum foil and back in for another 30 minutes.

The wife liked it so it must be edible.   :dunno:

Nate, how far can you stretch 2 handfuls of dried Morels? enough to accentuate a dish to feed 15 people?

Thanks for the reminder Kathy!  Fresh black trumpets (or anything else for that matter) would go great with dinner.  I spend way too much time looking down for mushrooms when I'm in the woods.  God help me if I find one or some........I might as well give up on focusing on game for the day!

Charlie - I may have something a bit better than dried morels.  I now freeze my mushroom stash.  As long as you are going to have them as an add-in to a dish, they work great....just dump them in frozen.  I vacuum seal, then freeze morels and maitakes (hen of the woods) every year.  If someone wants to try using some, let me know.....I'll bring a few packages.

It looks like great territory, Ken.  I'm a flatlander so any hill looks steep!  So, we go in from Smith Rd?  Then pretty much west and north?

I made some of those jalepinos a couple years ago.  I can't eat hot stuff but I ate one but it wasn't cooked enough, I guess.  My guts and farther down the digestive tract were bad for a week.  Real bad LOL!  Then I made some more a week later for some folks, but they had me cook them a lot longer.  I tried another and it wasn't too bad.

I can take Manny, but remember I'll be in late, so that may pose a problem. Speaking of, I still need to get mine too. If everyone is down for the count when I get in, I'll sleep outside in my truck, Especially if all you soft bellies get ahold of the jalapeño before I get there.     :biglaugh:

I figure Ill get a better nights sleep out there, instead of battling honey do's before I leave. Ill have to leave here at 2am.    :rolleyes:

I can put a dent in anything hot and spicy, so please save some for me if you do.

Sting Ring?!?! HAHA Havent heard that one before (Lived it though a time or two).

I'll bring an extra case or two of TP for the walk up.

Manny be careful, Drew comes off as a (sorta) reasonable, well-meaning kinda guy, but one or two of his special stops later and he's a real handful! If you have a shock collar, I suggest you bring it.

Heck with this many guys smelling of Hooch and Jalapenos We could just sit shoulder to shoulder on a camp crapper with the wind in our face and the sun to our back. Nothing is coming from the rear except for pain...

Only problem is trying to figure whos arrow out of the 14 brought the animal down. Or 13 cause I'll be laughing too hard to get a shot off.

Im bringing mine..  :biglaugh:

I always extend the invitation and make it real clear what to expect.  She only agreed to come once when we first started out, she didn't make it very long and left early. said she would come pick me up when I was ready.

Best part is she doesnt try and go to a "guy' event with me and I'm a "winner" for offering the invite.

Its a win win.

Kinda like putting up with a kid whining, once they learn it doesn't work, you dont have to listen to it from them anymore.

I would like to say Thank You,to a few people...

First of all, I would like to thank Tony Ambrose... Without you my friend, it wouldn't have been possible... Thank you for the ride,and the wonderful conversation!!!!!

Next, I would like to thank Nathan... You are the most AMAZING Cook!!!!! You worked hard making sure everyone was well fed with the most DELICIOUS food!!!!! You are always welcome at my camp or home!!!

I would like to thank Kenny's Mom!!!!! She opens her home every year,to that hoard that comes up!!!!!

No deer sighted Shawn.

It was  a great time.  Saturday night had that feeling like something was going to happen. I guess I wasn't the only one feeling it.  The chipmunks were out in high numbers.  was shocked not to see squirrels.

When you are a mile in and 1/2 mile from the trail thought we would play it safe and come out before it was completely dark. It wasn't a navigation issue but a safety issue with all the streams and boulders and such.

The way Ken's mom just resigned herself to the fact that her house would be a hunting camp for the weekend! She just makes you feel like she is so happy to see you. ok now i'll try to explain how i feel. i LOVE this hunt and roaming the woods with my brothers! i have to say it does bother me if i can not get the hunters on deer no matter what the excuse, weather or otherwise. i just feel i have not done a good enough job. now i KNOW how ya all feel that were there, just like me as it all about the company, the get together, food, laughs and fun, i %100 agree.  i just do not feel right about not getting OTHERS on game, myself, ya all know how i feel.  i love all of you and ALLWAYS have the time of my life but i am yearning to have one of ya take a deer of that mountain, i will feel i have done right by you then!

Fact of it is, There was no other place I would have rather been as there were Many Trad Gang Brothers to enjoy the company of.

Ken,

Thank you soooo much for putting this together. It sure was medicine for the soul.I didn't have the opportunity to thank Mom personally, so please give her a big hug for me. Im humbled by everyones generosity. Gifting was running wild at this gathering, and I benefited greatly. I can go on and on about all the stuff I received, but bottom line is, be careful admiring other peoples belongings.... They find there way home with you. I had a hard but fun time explaining it all to my wife.

Nate, The food was so awful that I gained 32lbs.   :bigsmyl:

Ken, its too bad 1 animal was hurt in the making of this feature, but I still say a quiver would have been a less painful alternative. For both the cat and the wallet. I hope recovery goes well.

I will follow this thread closely as I catch up at work, and plan for the next ADK Attack. Thank you all for your contributions and fellowship. The relationships that I made at this hunt will be forged from an eternal flame of blood and steel. Thank you brothers. I look forward to our next meeting.

Casey

Sure was good stuff. I havent heard yet if my Thunder Child made it back to Downsville safely, it better have. You guys are all good people and Ida driven out there just for dinner if I had to work that day. You guys are all the real deal and I truly enjoyed my time spent with you all. Pissed that I didnt take pics but my camera was safe in a zip lock bag and it wouldnt have been if I took it out longer than a few minutes. For those who dont know, at the start of the hunt, the weather was a pleasant 45 degrees or so with no wind and no rain. Charlie, Ron, Casey and I set off to the top of a mountain as a group and and planned to string out one by one.

          By the time and just about the time we got to where we wanted to be it started sprinkling and getting heavier and heavier by the minute. Just as we set up the skies opened up bad and turned into an all out downpour. My only hope was to don my GoreTex from my pack and take cover under the canopy of a beech tree.

        I sat for 4 hours or so and saw and saw nothing but a yetti, or a Bow Spirit, or Domestic Death, or Aqua Man whatever you want to call him. I took pleasure counting coup on him from 20 yards, lucky I didnt have a judo with me.   :D

Aint that trail something Ron? Its more of a stream,/waterfall in my book. The trails are very eroded and because the mountains up there appear to be more rock than topsoil, every bit of precipitation runs down into the stone bare trails making them very much like brooks. Its a bit hairy walking up in the dark, even with a headlamp that I was luck enough to have with me on both of my ADK Attack appearances.

Michael, the hula skirt is bear hide, one size fits all. Good luck getting Charlie to give it up though. He claims it breathes well and keeps him airy.

It should read "Charlie is absolutely lost"

I missed our turn by about 100 yards. I felt like an idiot until I hit the next old logging road, I knew where I was basically, just needed to figure out exactlty where we were on the road. I only had to go abbout 50 yards to see the swamp, and then Ken appeared through the fog.

The hunters were placed and the rain started.

WOW!  This weekend went by WAY too fast!!!!!

What a great time.....even with the nasty wet weather.

First off.....a BIG Thanks goes out to Ken and Ken's Mom for hosting this ragtag group.  You folks made us feel right at home.  I can't thank you enough!

Chuck - it was great sharing the road trip with you.

It was great to see friends Ken, Charlie and Chris again and get to finally meet some other TGers including my fellow NYers Chuck, RonP, RonW, Brian, Justin, Drew and son, Casey and Izzy who are all new found friends (sorry if I left anyone out - I've got CRS), in addition to my new Canadian friend Manny and my new favorite MA chef, Nate.  You folks are all great to share a camp with.

I can tell you that this group would never allow something like a bit of torrential rain ever dampen their spirits.

FOOD...let's just put it as "our larder runneth over"!  I was only happy to be able to share some various moose sausage products (which gladly disappeared) and my 2011 bounty of morels and maitakes for Nate's wonderful stroganoff.  Speaking of Nate....not only is he a great guy to hang around and a more-than-talented bladesmith, but this guy is a true chef!!! Thanks for all the time you spent preparing  those great meals.  You and Charlie also qualify as "Grill Masters". I know I came home a few pounds heavier!!!  Bear backstrap, Venison backstrap, Pork loin, french toast to die for, breakfast, Charlie's poppers, hotdogs, moose and venison sausages, Brian's great baked beans, Nate's venison loin hor d oeuvres and of course, Nate's stroganoff.  It was almost like a hunter's holiday weekend with all the food riches.

Thank you Charlie for the great wool coat.  It will find lots of use this winter.  Brian - I can't thank you enough for the great gift of your hand-made flute.  My wife will force me to learn how to play it properly!  A more generous gathering of folks you will never find!

The "Newfie vs cat" incident happened moments before Chuck and I hit the road...I almost dreaded hearing what that outcome would be.  I hope the cat is alright.  I could only imagine your Mother's reaction. Hopefully, she won't associate the cat getting injured with that hoard of hunters that took over occupation of her house!

Ken - Brother, thank you so much for hosting this hunt. I had a wonderful time.  Please thank your Mother for me for sharing her house.  She is a great Lady.

To the rest of the "gang" - I would share a fire anytime with each and every one of you.  You are a great bunch of folks to spend time with.   :thumbsup:

  :campfire:

Cookie and the Cat Wrangler vs the turkey part 2:
lat year The Cat Wrangler called in the biggest gobbler of his life but due to the fact they are friends he did not shoot and i'm sure Cookie thanks him for that. ok fast forward a year to Saterday morning. this is where the confusion begings as to thier turkey hunting system. Cookie swears that HE was the scout and would pop his head up on occasion (napping!!!) to look for the turkeys, he was then to alert The Cat Wrangler by throwing a small pebble ( large stone) at his hyead to alert him. however The Cat Wrangler swears Cookie has it all backwords and HE was on the alert for turkeys (napping) and was to wake Cookie up by tapping him on the head with a twig ( large limb) to alert him! i'm more confused as an amish electrician as to how the helll this system works but low and behold The Cat Wrangler did get off a shoot and trimmed a few feathers (AGAIN) form a hen. tyhe end story is The Cat Wrangler had to eat crow AGAIN complaments of the turkey!!!! now as to their system it reminds me of that game at the fair where ya try to bop the gophers in the head when then pop thier heads up!

What a bunch of CHARACTERS!!  I thinks these posts are pretty much spot on with the antics of the weekend.  From the general debauchery of Friday night, to the three (or two, or sixteen) stooges in the pouring rain on the mountain, to the general admiration of all the "knives" over on the knife forum, snoring, pan buttering (and the ever-present bread tossing), and chronograph deciphering, it was a trip for the ages!  Couldn't have asked for a better group of guys in a better venue, It was perfect in every way.  Thanks again Ken and Mother Mowrey for taking us in!

The Adirondack Attack, Where everyone smells bad, shoots crooked (or low and left), snores loud and drinks too much!!(and dont take kindly to hissing cats)

Thanks again all,

Due to "personal" issues... I really haven't hunted much at all over the last 2 years. To say it was a WONDERFUL 1st hunt of the year, would be a HUGE understatement!!!!!

I would like to thank again... Kenny, and all of my TradGang Brothers, for making this the HAPPIEST time I have had in a LONG time!!!!! The mountain air cleared my head, soothed my soul, and warmed my heart... Whatever may come, I know that I have a "family" here that I can count on!!!

Chuck stopped by my home Tuesday for a visit. Said he had a great time and may head back up for the Muzzeloader season.

Said if he wasn't slippin and slidin so much walking up the Mtn, he would have had an arrow nocked and possibly taken a shot at the bear. Chuck did say he came back "heavier by a few pounds"...can't figure that one out!

Too bad the weather didn't cooperate, sounded like a good time with good people.

I passed through your country today fellas on my way to Herkimer, was thinking about you all. Pretty warm but my hunting land is looking as good as ever. Lots and lots of apples and rubs in the right place. Got to see a grouse drum for the 1st time in real life. Fixed the landowners chimney and had to be careful not to look at all of the geese flying over lest I fell off. Beautiful day to be out that way.
