Decided to hunt the afternoon on the opening of the Wisconsin deer archery season. Headed for the ladder stand at 3:30PM - got halfway up the ladder and saw the back 2/3d's of a deer at 25 yds. - later turned out to be a fork horned buck that merely wandered off after we decided to inspect each other for 20 min. An hour later a mature doe is broadside at 20 yds. but overhanging foliage prevents an ethical shot. Not 5 minutes later another mature doe is seen on a trail coming my way. It is my time now - so I stand and away her showing herself. Not to be as the undergrowth is too heavy and I lose her in the thicket. While watching for her to come out a fawn of the year walks under my stand and looks up at the 250# squirrel in the tree wearing a red and black checked shirt. She just wasn't right for the first kill so she walks away unknowing of her possible demise. Can't wait until the next evening opportunity.
