I'm planning an out of state whitetail hunt for 2012, I live in Wisconsin. Would travel 500 miles or so, one way. I would want to hunt public land, can't afford and wouldn't hunt, pay per hunt. I would hope to camp on public land and am looking for a state that doesn't require a draw, OTC would be best.
Recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks
Toby

Dont go to arkansas their out of state lic is way to expencive, very little public land and the deer population is way down and every thing is a draw. :biglaugh:
Really though i dont know if its within your range but it is the opposite of the above. I havent hunted there yet but will be living there in about a year and have been doing a lot of research on it, it looks like im going to have a great retirement.

I always wanted to find a place in Iowa where I could set up my Eena canvas tent and feel that I could walk out of my tent and start hunting in western Iowa. That scenario does not exists in very many places in Iowa. Perhaps Yellow River Forest areas, my favorite, and the forest areas down in Lucas county would work for you, if you can get an Iowa out of state tag. Our deer numbers are down and everyone wants to blame the doe shooting, I have been told that GMO corn can make rats sterile in three generations. Could be some of the difference between eastern Iowa deer numbers and western Iowa deer numbers.

IN, OH, or KY would be good options.

Missouri fits your requirements. We have OTC tags that can be purchased from any place that sells hunting equipment, a lot of public ground to hunt, no unit rules to figure out and the convenient Telecheck system. Along with the purchase of the deer tags you'll get two turkey tags and a small a game tag. All this for the low low price of $225
Contact the Missouri Conservation Department and they can send you a map with all the public land shown on the map.

Ohio or Kentucky would meet all your requirements quite nicely.

I am watching this with purpose - have wall tent - complete camp utensils, tent stove included. Also, a cheesehead. Ummmmh, maybe the best ones are the ones that don't get mentioned - like fishing spots.
