Title: kennym Lease Hunt 2011 (4 DEER TOTAL DOWN)
Post by: kennym on October 04, 2011, 11:29:00 PM
I should have started this thread when Steve and crew were here, but busy, busy!!

The MI crew saw several deer and mmmmmissssed a buck. The shooter said he couldn't breathe and his heart was about to jump outta his chest!

Thats what makes us do it! Thanks Wolverines!!

They could only hunt 3 days before going back home.

Now round 2 is here(some of em anyway)Charlie and Terry are here ,Tracy and Bob coming soon.

I think Charlie saw 16 deer today including a nice buck and found an acorn honeyhole.

Terry saw 2 bucks tonite so close he could hear em chew their cud, but was dark in there and couldn't be sure they had the 4 pts on 1 side to be legal.

There will most likely be blood tomorrow, they have a plan!       :readit:

I'll keep ya'all updated from time to time, wish em luck!!                    :archer2:

Quite a deer assassination team you've got housed up there Kenny.

I am inclined to agree with you in that I fully expect to be reading "bloody arrow" stories in less than 24 more hours.

Hunt hard and Shoot straight fellas!

God bless,Mudd

Heck I knew that ,Gary!  :D

I went and BSed with the hunters yesterday PM, you can blame me for no deer last nite, we talked and didn't realize it was hunt:30    :dunno:

Tracy was gonna move his stand to where he had seen a very heavy-duty doe twice. When he got there(late) there was a very nice buck bedded by his stand and the large one(doe) was  already there also.

He had another buck in late, but he can tell it when he gets home.

Fairly uneventful for C & T

Gonna see em after while when a couple guys come over to BS, so might have more report then!

Back home safe and sound, I had a blast and enjoyed every minute of this hunt.

Terry and Charlie are hunting one more day and Bob was unable to make it last minute.

Here's a couple picks until I can get them all down loaded and start with my part of the hunt  :archer2:

There were some of the largest white oaks around that I've ever seen

We had a couple other Tradgangers stop over and visit and stay the night. Good to see Tom and Ben again.

Terry was in rare form a couple of days ago and kept us intertained with all his energy.

Back later with more.

It sure was great to see Charlie again and finaly meeting Terry, We stayed up way to long talking and discusing were I would be hunting in the morning.

They decided to set me on one of Kenny's new stands and showed me on the arial photo's of the property how to get there. I didn't sleep much that night and never do before a hunt.

I didn't have any trouble finding the ladder stand in the dark but I did spook two different groups of deer on the way in and I hate doing that. Not long after daylight I had a small buck cross the soybean field in front of me.

What I didn't know was I walked by a small pond located just inside the timber. Not long after he went into the timber I could here alot of splashing and a deer walking in the water. 30 minutes later several more deer came to the pond and did the same thing. I couldn't see any of them even though they were 25yds away because of a large stand of ceder tree's between us.

I could here wood ducks and doves all landing at the pond also, It was getting warm and windy and by 9:30 I was ready to check out the pond and see what I was missing.

What I found was a nice small pond with two trails one at each end. I followed the trails to a great area in the dark timber that was loaded with several large white oak tree's and the ground around them was picked over bigtime. There just happened to be a very dead Ceder tree perfect for a stand that I would bring back for the evening hunt.

The weather was in the 80's and very windy the hole time I was there but the hunt must go on. The wind was perfect at the ceder tree and no sooner did I get it set up and looked up there was three deer coming up out of a dry creek bed that came from the pond drainage about 60yds away.

It was a doe with a pair of button bucks, The started feeding on the acorns and working there way toward me. I still didn't have my camo on and was sweating pretty good even in my tshirt and blue jeans.

I didn't worry about it though I have killed a bunch of deer over the years in blue jeans but was worried about my scent and the sweating. It's amazing how loud they are when eating acorns and even with the heavy winds I could plainly here them. The wind swirled at one point and the big doe went on alert not long after and got really spooky. She started my way trying to find me and came into close to 20yds but but offered no shots and snorted a couple times then ran back to 35yds.

The button bucks stayed still the whole time and never moved.

Yep, I love them big ol ceder tree's and always look for one first to put my stand in or blinds under.

The wind got better again and she finaly settled back down. They stayed around till it got to dark to shoot then went back down the way they came. When I walked out of the timber I ran smack dab into 6 deer running toward me headed for the trail right beside the ditch I just came out of. I got a bunch of snorts that time!!

Back at camp Charlie and Terry had both seen deer also.

I always enjoy sitting around camp after getting back from hunting and hearing everybody replay there hunts for the day.   :D

Kenny stopped by for the evening and was checking to see if we needed any help again. I had no trouble sleeping this night and before I new it I could smell the coffee brewing.

I made it to the stand this time without spooking any deer but couldn't find the rope I had left hanging the night before from lowering my bow down. I finaly shined my light up to the stand and all of it was piled up on the stand platform nice and neat.   :dunno:   I guess mister coon was messing with me or something, At least he didn't leave a calling card with it.    ;)

Soon after daylight I noticed a buck about 80yds away in the dry creek bed eating the yellow hickory and Iron wood leaves laying all around. He spent 30 minutes pigging out before heading away from me. Soon after I heard a deer cough off to my left and looked over and seen a big doe feeding on acorns about 60yds away.

She was a big ol doe and all by her self, Perfect! but it was not to be this morning and she feed on down the ridge away from me.

I helped Terry move a couple stands midday and he sure found some good spots with some major buck sign. I couldn't believe it but I forgot my camera, Sorry  :biglaugh:  I had to laugh at my luck. Not 30 minutes after they left another buck walked up and started feeding on them too.

I could see he was legal with 4pts on one side and looked good to me. He was taking his sweet time then started my way slowly feeding on the acorns but I was running out of daylight fast. He didn't make it to me on time but did walk to within 8yds and let me take several picks with my camera flash.

He finaly moved off toward the pond and I got the heck out of there.

The next morning I went in early and moved the stand in the dark to another ceder. I really liked this spot and hoped all the deer I had been seeing would show back up. Here's the view I had and you can see some of the Iron wood and hickory leaves on the ground plus the dry creek bed the been using alot.

It was still dark and I could hear a deer up the hill eating acorns and at daylight I could see it was a doe. It took her a long time to feed my way and I had her in shooting range but could not get a arrow through all the brush.

She finaly fed back up the hill and out of my life because that was all I would see for the rest of the trip. I only had one more evening to hunt and they started cutting the beans that afternoon, I had Combines and grain trucks all around me and no deer for the first time.   :)

I sure hope everything went ok today Terry.

The cabin was great except for the nonstop falling of acorns from the monster tree. I think everybody got hit a few times  :D

We did some shooting in the yard at Pepsi bottles and tennis balls. Tom's a awesome shot!!

Hey Joe! I resemble that!!   ;)

As a matter of fact that button snagged the string real good during practice yesterday. Threw the arrow way left!
I suspect it is more involved in the process than I'd like to think.
While shooting with the boys on this hunt I was missing way too many shots left and right. I'd just forgotten about it.

I usually have something over my bibs when hunting (I hunt in camo bibs)so it's not an issue.

I'll get on with my end of the story later this morning after I catch up around home. I hate procrastination so I'll get the chores and "honey do's" done first.

You know? The ones I put off before the hunt.
   :D

I'm also going to need help with photos since my camera shot craps at the beginning of this hunt.

Tracy? Terry?  :help:

I have been very busy since my return....

This week will be much less chaotic...so I will be sharing some stories and thoughts....but for now...

Yes, I'll be back next year you bet.  I had a plan this year...but my 'must go see' nature kept me from sticking to said plan.  I did get to see more of the property....to help put the complete puzzle together, but it did cost me time and encounters on proven stands.....but that's not really what's most important.

I already have a plan for next year...I have old trees that will have stands in them the 1st mid day of the hunt....and new trees that I found as well.  Next year will not be 'must go and see'....but more of a 'must wait and see'.

I had a BLAST.....and had run ins with 3 different bucks and a few does.....more later...

This was definitely a 'hunt of almosts' for me.

I had a really big doe to the TX spin move on me, and she wasn't in the same place when
the arrow arrived....the o'l 'duck and roll', and she was quartering away already when I
dropped the string.  But, that was the 1st time I hunted that area and I hung a stand in
the perfect tree. She came right to me making the afternoon hunt a win in my book.

Here's a few pics of this area.....just beautiful...and VERY Bucky looking let me tell ya...

I had what I believe were two eight pointers hanging around my stand for 20 minutes, but
I just could not see a brow tine to save my life...it was so dark where I was.  I could
see their bodies just fine and dandy for a shot, but could not see a bow tine as the
light was low and they would not hold their heads still.  A legal but must have 4 points
on one side, and I'd have taken either one let me tell ya.

I had both deer dead to rights at 12 yards....and at 8 yards over and over and over. I
even had them both under my stand.  I have no idea why they hung around me so long, they
even smelled the tree I was in and did not spook.  Those were some crazy bucks.

Here's the area....I also hunted from the ground in a really nice blowdown set up...but saw no deer that morning.

Well, I guess I should get on with this. It seems that the older I get the longer it takes to recoup from my hunting trips.
Actually I think it's recouping from my chores when I get home that takes the time... and of course it's deer season and I go out almost everyday to hunt somewhere.

Throw into the mix problems with getting my photos ready to display and you get a delayed (much too long) story.

So here it goes....
Title: Re: kennym Lease Hunt 2011 (4 DEER TOTAL DOWN)

I'd been anticipating this hunt for quite a while. As a matter of fact, since I drove home from the trip last year.
It was obvious to Terry and I that we'd be coming back for this hunt as long as God let us.

All of the elements of a good hunt are there. A great place to stay at a reasonable price. Great hunting grounds with excellent trophy potential. All Tradganger's for companions.

The crew would be different this year and I suspect that will be the custom in future years.
Last year it was Terry, Joekeith, Randy Burtis and myself.
This year it was supposed to be Terry, Tracy Potter, Bob "Border Bob" Walker and me. Due to the passing of a friend Bob had to cancel at the last minute and that was a great disappointment for all of us.
Bob is a hard hunter, great cook and a fun companion in any camp and we've shared a few.

I arrived first since it's a home state hunt for me. Actually the farm is within 40 miles of another farm I hunt every year so I'm hunting similar country.

Terry had planned to show up the day after, but couldn't take the anticipation one minute longer and showed up the first evening near midnight.
I heard him come in, but with sleep filled eyes I rolled over and drifted back to la la land.

The next morning we sat down together over a cup of coffee and caught up on each other's news before heading to the woods.

With visions of last years hot spots we set off before first light. There would be slight variations  in our plans and I would set a field edge/funnel location KennyM had put a ladder stand in.

Terry would have to think on his feet since the farm road to where he wanted to hunt had been planted over with soybeans.

I saw a doe and fawn along the distant treeline that harbored the "Bobcat Stand" and where  Randy had killed a coyote last year.
Two plump raccoon's rounded out the morning which like the one's that followed held the promise of higher than normal temperatures.
I guess you can't have it all.

Back at our cabin we enjoyed a bacon and egg breakfast with toast slathered with my wife's apple butter.
It's not what I usually have for breakfast, but it was hunting camp and isn't that what you do?

Here's a look at our "Spartan" living quarters.

One of the factors which would influence our hunt was the bumper crop of white oak acorns this year. The giant oak in front of the cabin alerted us to that fact.

They crackled like firecrackers under our tires as we pulled in and crunched underfoot even as we walked up the steps of the cabin.
They dropped with deafening regularity on the tin roof of the old house.

At one point Terry started to run out to his vehicle in his socks to get something only to come  back "ouching and oohing" trying to will himself weightless as they pressed deeply into the soles of his feet.

After our breakfast was finished Terry and I headed for the woods and some spot scouting for an evening hunt.
There was a corner of the north farm That we hadn't looked at last year and we headed there first. From the looks of the map we might be able to access some locations with a favorable southeast wind.

Almost immediately I spotted another huge old white oak just over the crest of the hill. It looked like it was sitting out in the beans and away from the woods edge. The tops of the other trees were just visible beyond it and we suspected  another heavily timbered draw lay there.
It would bear investigation.

As we crested the hill and could see the entire oak it was obvious that it did indeed sit out away from what we now could tell was brush and from the looks of it there was a pond behind the wall of brush.

At some point in time the farmer had dozed up brush and small trees around the big old oak, creating a "berm" which surrounded it. As we approached, Terry went left and I went right.

There were acorns there for sure and deer sign, but not too much. Only half way around Terry called me to come look at what he'd found.

There on the side of the oak closest to the brush was a sight to make any whitetail hunter weak in the knees. The ground was torn up right in front of the berm and acorns, their caps and hulls littered the ground in great numbers. Here and there little piles of deer poo told a tale of frequent visitors. I started looking around for an ambush spot.

At first I planned to just back into the brush against the berm in the coral berry and Poke. A ghillie would be perfect. It was a bit close but what else to do?
As we probed for a hideaway it became apparent that there was an opening on the other side of the berm right at the base of the tree.

We busted our way in to find that there was a huge open space around the mighty oak and flat enough to put a comfortable chair... and a table and refrigerator and...!

Soon we had cleared the ground of debris and fixed shooting ports at several prime locations. One could actually sneak around the tree if need be and cover almost the entire perimeter.
I just knew blood would be spilled soon and I was right. Tripping over an exposed root I fell as if in slow motion while my left forearm rode down an Osage limb. Ow, ow, ow!!! Poopy! Blood ran freely down my arm from the deep gouges I'd received.
More angry than hurt I got up and we headed for the house.

When we got to the house Tracy was there waiting for us. He wasn't supposed to be there until the next day. This was his anniversary and we understood. How he got away I don't really know, but I know his wife and knew she had seen his excitement and sent him on his merry way. She's a gem for sure!

The rest of the afternoon was spent talking about deer and gear. You couldn't have wiped the smiles off of our faces with a chain saw.

Soon it was time to hit the woods. Terry took Tracy in tow and they headed for the south farm and the spots Terry had found that morning.

I was north bound and down with Terry's HuntMore chair in hand. It would be the key to a comfortable evening.

Around 5 P.M. I noticed movement across the way near the pond. Two deer were in there eating something and messing around in the water.

They were just silhouettes and though they looked pretty close I couldn't judge just how far they were through the brush.

See if you can make them out.

They fooled around in there for 10 or 15 minutes before leaving the way they had come from.

No more action until 6:30 P.M. when a group of five deer came walking at a determined pace along the brushes edge and ducked into the brush where I'd seen the first two.
Three of them were little bucks around a year and a half old.

They were having a grand old time in there splashing and eating (at the time I was convinced there must be an oak in there... I'd find out later that that wasn't the case. They were eating the yellow leaves off the willows that lined the pond.

To my amazement three more showed up and ducked into the brush to the right of where that first group entered.
They would all end up leaving from a spot just about 50 yards from my blind and up the drainage into the wind which was absolutely perfect for me.

That was it in my mind. Great evening and all that jazz.
It turned out that I was wrong as a little doe fed back toward me and the acorns ten yards in front of me.

I readied my bow for the coming shot but just when it was about to step into the open it spotted another doe far to my right and trotted through the kill zone and hooked up with the new comer. They both went into the brush and I watched them until quitting time.

As I eased around the tree to my blind's entrance a movement in the beans caught my attention. A very nice buck stood twenty yards away staring in my direction. He'd seen just enough movement to put him on alert.

Easing an arrow onto the string I stood behind my cover hoping he'd get curious and come closer. That didn't happen and he turned and walked away in the direction he'd come from.

WOW!!

I'd already formulated a plan for the next evening and would be back tomorrow at mid day. I was going to get up close and personal over by the pond.

Next morning I once again headed for the north farm to a stand simply marked on the map as "new stand". The same one as the first morning. I renamed it "Shakey". It's not in a very thick tree and my considerable weight causes it to move and shake when I shift around.
Kenny had even tied a stabilizing rope to an adjacent tree (even smaller) that helped some.

A small buck came cruising through around 8 and didn't pay one bit of attention to me. One thing important about "Shakey" is that it has great background... a detail shared by all of the stands Kenny puts up. That's just smart!
Other than that only two raccoon's showed up for a brief bit of entertainment.

Done with the morning hunt it was back to the cabin for late breakfast and debriefing with the guys.
Both had seen deer and it sounded like Tracy was in the middle of a deer convention.

A brief snooze after eating and Terry and I headed off for the pond with a set of Rapid Rails and a hang on stand.

We quickly identified the entry trails. The interior of the brush was pretty small and we could see all we needed to by peering in from the outside.
I saw no reason to walk around in there and smell things up. Even though we both practice scent control there was no need to push our luck.

The only tree fit for a stand was a cedar tree that sat against the overgrown barbed wire fence we found which formed the perimeter of the brushy area.
Terry had soon climbed the cedar and went to work with a small saw at my direction. Before long he had my stand hung and one set of Rails filling in the only gap where there were no limbs to use for steps.

It was only about 8 ft. to the platform but with plenty of cover, below and around me, plus the steady southeast wind there was no need to go higher. It would only have caused problems anyway.

We were soon off to the cabin for more stratigizing and lunch. We were having so much fun and the excitement level was so high that time was racing by.

I soon found myself back at the thicket and approached the cedar from the downwind edge of the field avoiding where deer were likely to walk as much as possible.

It was 4P.M and I had a long wait ahead of me. I used the early part of my sit to trim unwanted branches and to rearrange others that we'd cut previously for maximum cover.

Finally the magical hour arrived. I kept my bow "Curly" at the ready even though I remained seated.
I've got a bad back and long periods standing in one spot are not in my best interest.

As the minutes ticked by I new it was getting close. I figured I could stand for the last 45 minutes of light and got ready to do that.
I was only half way to my feet when a flash of movement below me brought me up short.

Just at the very instant that I was standing a mature doe entered the brush on the main trail situated off my right shoulder 10 feet away.
I was busted and she turned to leave with her youngster.
Dam, hell, poopy!!!!

With nothing to lose I finished standing knowing full well that I might have just blown my opportunity.

Let me explain right now, that I was very interested in filling my doe tags. With many opportunities to hunt prime buck areas this year I could afford to be very selective on bucks.

The last few years I'd fallen down in the meat making department due to health reasons and I wanted some prime venison in my freezer. It takes at least 3 deer to last my wife and I one year.
That was my goal and I'd take the first antlerless deer that offered itself up.

Well, I was a little disappointed in myself over my carelessness and was actively brooding over it when the next deer arrived... all five of them.

It was the same group of five from the night before with the young bucks and two does. The does went immediately to the water while two of the little guys split off and came under my stand.

They were close enough to see eyelashes, but they never looked up once. I guess they must have messed around under me for 3 or 4 minutes before drifting over to the pond's edge.
It wasn't looking like I'd get a clear shot at a doe since there were no lanes cut over to where they were.

I amused myself watching the little guys butt heads and push back and forth while splashing in the shallows.

One of the does came up behind them pretty much minding her own business. In there rambunctiousness the bigger of the two bucks gave the other a good push and backed him right into the doe who crow hopped to the side and into the brush with me.

As they say on the National Geographic channel when the baby Wildebeast strays from the heard in lion country, "sadly, there can be but one conclusion".

She walked directly under me and off to my left which was wide open. The 2216 slid silently over the rest, the broadhead pointed right at the middle of the ribcage even before I reached anchor.

The flight of the arrow was short, fast and invisible in the evening shadows, but a dark spot appeared at the exact point of my concentration. The shot was a perforating hit through and through, the arrow skipping along the hard packed dirt behind her.
In an instant she vanished and the thicket fell silent and empty. The beating of my heart was the only sound.

Been very busy the last couple of days. Hunting morning's and evenings and filling the in between times with stuff that has to be taken care of in between.
Seems like the sky is falling around here at least every other day and sometimes more often than that.

Nuff said!!    ;)

As soon as I lost sight of the deer I turned to a small opening in the wall of brush behind me. Just for an instant the doe was in that opening with two others close behind.

There was nothing to be gained by hanging out in the stand as darkness would soon be on me. I'd use the remaining light to search for sign close by.

I couldn't find the arrow nor could I find any sign of blood at the sight of the hit. That's not unusual so I quickly checked along her departure route. Nothing there either.

Since it was much too soon to move in the deer's direction, I opted for the short walk to my truck and the short drive to the house.

It would kill some time, there would be tracking help and most importantly there would be strong backs much more suited to dragging a dead deer than mine.

Back at the house I told my story to the other guys and listened to there's. A couple of cold Cokes and we were out of there.
It had been an hour and that should be plenty.

We found first blood not far into the bean field and just before the spot where I'd seen the deer last.
Now we found more ten feet away.

It was rich red blood with signs of bubbles in it. Not as much as I would have liked but still a positive sign.

We moved that way for another 20 yards when the trail just dried up.  At that point I was second guessing everything that had happened.
"Maybe I hit it too far back"! "Why did I use the Stinger Buzzcut instead of my Magnus I." "I'm sure I had the angle figured...or did I".

With nothing to lose I picked the row where we had last found blood and slowly moved along search for blood as I went.

That animal was heading for the woods a hundred yards distant. That's what they do. Head for cover when hurt.
It made sense to me that it would follow a row that went most directly to where it wanted to go and I was in it.

After another thirty yards my light reflected off the white between her hind legs. Phewwww!!!
I'd found no more blood.

It was apparent from the stiffness of her joints that she'd been dead since very shortly after the arrow hit her. It could have been a little farther forward, but was a very lethal hit anyway hitting liver and lungs.

Terry grabbed her and headed down the row toward the road. We'd clean her up, get a couple of pictures and take her back to the cabin for proper field dressing.

Thanks guys.

The rest of the week would have been anticlimatic if it hadn't been for a visit from Ben Saye and Tom Porter.

Lots of good story tellin and we even got to put the guys out on stand for a little "recon". No bows, just cameras.

Looking back at the hunt it was made by the weather along with the timing and volume of the white-oaks.

I'd never hunted a scenario in this state that was so dependent on water. It has been extra dry this year and all the usual little pot holes, springs and seeps were non existent.

Of course I always watch the oaks in the early season. It's always where the action is.
I guess I don't remember seeing all of the big oaks last year but I sure took note this year and made mental notes for future hunts.

When the others had left and Terry and I stood saying our goodbyes we spoke briefly of coming back in December. That works for me.

As a side note... I can't blame the lack of blood trail to my little doe on the Stinger Buzzcut. It was the angle of the shot completely.
Steep quartering shots like that often have flaps of skin which don't quite line up with the meat underneath.
That and the fact that the entry and exit wounds were very similar vertically.

I'll surely use them again and have made a special place in my quiver for them.

Hey boys, we made it home in one piece.  The drive home seemed twice as long as the drive there.LOL  I promise I'll have pics and a story to tell this week end.

I just want to say first of all that my son-in-law and I had the time of our lives.  The properties we hunted were beautiful and full of deer.  The old house / cabin was perfect.  But most of all Kenny was a first class host.

Man am I tired.  We started hunting around 3:00 p.m. Friday the 21st and hunted until 10:00 this morning.  With the exception of last Friday and today we spent 6-7 hours each day sitting in our stands or blinds.  And I'll say this before I get off and hopefully watch my Cardnials win the series, if we had killed all the deer we shot at this past week we would have had to borrowed Kenny's trailer to haul them home.  :archer:

More tomorrow.

Well boys been washing cloths, puttin away gear, visiting with family and cuttin up deer all day.

Here is how our hunt went.

Last November I informed my son and son-in-law that with or without them I wanted to go somewhere other than Arkansas on a bowhunting trip.  So, if they wanted to go they had better get their wives used to the idea a little ahead of time.  We started looking at places to go and critters to hunt.  I had been odering lams from Kenny for a while and had never paid any attention to his lease property on his website but now it clicked.  I asked if he had any spots open and he put me in line for one of the lease weeks and when the dates were determined we chose our week.

It was all we could think or talk about all winter, spring and summer.  Just the three of us hunting for a week.  Well, as things happen, my son took a new job teaching school in Hot Springs and could not go.  Darrell and I almost canceled the trip.  We decided to go anyway and hope my son could go on another trip with us next year.

We arrived at Kenny's and after unpacking and getting the grand tour.  We put on our camo and went to the stands that Kenny had already set up for us.  He called them "observation" stands but both stands we sat in were on active deer runs.

Darrell hunted a stand that afternoon Kenny called the shakey stand because the tree was a small tree and shook a little.  He saw two doe but could not get a shot.  I think he was a litle surprised to see deer this quickly.  I sat in a stand on the east side of the property in a small draw between a bean field and an old grown up grass field.  I didn't see anything that afternooon.

The plan for Saturday was to hunt the same stands we sat in Friday afternoon in the morning and do some scouting and put up some stands of our own to hunt Sat. evening.  I saw two doe moving across the grass field about 50-60 yards away.  No shot for me but they gave me ideas about where I might move for the next day.

Darrells morning was a little more exciting then mine.  I am goig to let him chime in and tell his side of the "close encounter"

By the way, my son-in-law is a recent convert to traditional bowhunting.  He had his first traditional kill last fall on his property in Paragould.  He,like many others, can't believe how much more enjoyable hunting with trad equipment can be.

I'll be back tomorrow with some pictures.  Our excitment is just about to start.

Post by: Darrell M on October 30, 2011, 03:28:00 PM
Well I'm not a good story teller but here goes.
As David said we hunted the same stands Friday afternoon and sat morning. Kenny had showed me a good trail to sneak into "shaky" with that wouldn't make much noise. So that's the route I took sat morning.  It wasn't long after light when I caught movement to my left. A button buck and a small doe had stepped out of a draw just beside me just as Kenny said they would. The button buck fed with in just a few yards of me for several minutes but the little doe left no shot. They fed on and moved across the field and out I'd sight.
The plan that morning was to hunt till about 9am and then get down and do some scouting. It was about 8:45am and I hadn't seen anything else and i was hot so I decided to get down and take my coat and some extra baggage to the truck so i would be lighter and cooler as we scouted the property.   After I left the truck  I decided to head back to "shaky" and ease down the side of the bean field and see what sign I could see. So I eased back down the trail to shaky and when I got there I already had company the Dow and button buck were back. Luckily the limbs that were cut when shaky was put in were fallen down right in front of me so I had good cover and the deer never saw me. I watched em feed for a few minutes and they moved away from me and started to head into the trees about 20 yds from me, when for some reason they turned and headed straight to me. They kept getting closer and closer and I just knew at any minute they would wind me and bust out of there but they kept coming. The button got to within at least 6 or 7 yds and looked right toward me like he was looking right through me. I again thought at any minute he would bust out. But instead he turned broadside and put his head down and grazed off into the woods. I got excited because the little doe had been following him and I just knew she would stop in the same place he did and I would get to fling my first arrow of the hunt. However she turned to follow him but she stopped behind a big clump of tall weeds and then trotted of never giving me my shot.
But what a moment getting face to face with a deer on the ground!!! Something I had never done before. And it was just our first full day there.

Sat. morning after scouting I put up a stand where I thought the deer were moving from the fields to the draw to the grass field.  Unfortunately I was about 30-40 yards off target.  Here is a view of the areas where the deer were traveling. Title: Re: kennym Lease Hunt 2011 (4 DEER TOTAL DOWN)

Sat. afternoon I saw 5 deer from that stand.  Four doe came through one or two at a time several minutes apart.  About 5:30 that afternoon a spike trailed me to my stand from down wind.  I had dragged a rag into my stand and he trailed me like a beagle hound.  I could have dropped a rock on his head.

I had high hopes Sunday morning.  It was pretty cold, around 38 degrees.  It didn't take long.  At 7:30 I saw 5 deer coming from a corn field down the fence line I was on straight to me.  They were all doe.  A couple of them were big mature doe.  I had set up on a run that was beat out with deer sign.  The deer acted like they were going to bypass me to the west so I used my "can" a couple times and sure enough here they come.

One of the smaller yearling doe was first to come into the run.  She immediately stuck her head to the ground feeding on a mineral block Kenny had placed near the run.  She was broad side up wind to me at 18 yards.  Perfect!  Almost!  Dead center of her ribs between me and her was an oak sapling about 4" round.  I waited and waited.  A yound fawn came into the run and I hoped she would bump the bigger doe for a better shot.  She did just that, but about that time the coyotes a couple fields away went nuts howling.

The deer were on high alert.  I watched as she turned left and then right for a quartering away shot at 23 yards.  I think I rushed the shot and didn't concentrate enough on the "spot".  I missed about 4" right.  I think I was as surprised as she was.  I watched them for about 20 minutes and was patient but sometimes things happpen too fast.

Here is the run where she was near the mineral block.  I should have shot at her while she was behind the sapling. (http://i752.photobucket.com/albums/xx165/dflanrey/382.jpg)

Sunday afternoon I decided to keep them guessing so I moved to the edge of the bean field with a portable blind.

I saw two more doe that afternoon but they crossed the bean field at the other end going to the grass field.  I sat there again Monday morning but no deer came through.

I wasn't the only one that missed a deer Sunday morning.  When I met Darrell at edge of the field he had a long face and I knew he had had bad luck.

We had moved him to a real hot corner between two bean fields.  He had a doe come in just right at 21 steps.  Missed!  Called her back and yes missed again!  He said he made a good shot on a tree.  :help:

But I only need one well placed arrow to make my season!!! I have the script down and will hope that the deer read it carefully and play their part and run into my arrow and sacrifice themselves!!!

I'll pick up on Saturday, which is were david left off I think.
We finished scouting early saturday afternoon and set me up a stand in between two bean fields near a creek bottom. It was pretty clear the deer were moving down the creek so we set my stand up just a few yards from it.
I got to my stand later that afternoon and wasn't there long when I saw a doe moving down the creek just as we thought.  I don't know what it was but she didn't like something and stopped about 40 yds and headed back the way she came.  Just a few minutes later another doe came to about 25 yds and did the same thing.

Sunday morning I got back in the same stand ready to see some deer. At 9:15 a doe came trotting in from behind me stopping in between two trees about 20 yds from me.  I pulled back and let the first arrow of the hunt fly. "I hit dead center" of the tree that is. MISS #1

She trotted off about 10-15 yds. I reached for my can, hit it and back she came.  A second chance.  I for sure wouldn't miss twice.  She cam to stop about 8 yds from me behind some brush of course.  She finally stepped out and started quartering away from me as she walked off.  I confidently pulled back my bow and let the second arrow go.  However my upper limb smacked a little limb stub out on my tree.  The arrow sailed right over her back.  MISS #2

On Monday we decided to hunt our Sunday stands one more morning and then move to the south property.  I went back to my blind but saw no deer.  I hunted until around 9:30 and pulled out by blind and the lock on.  Darrell hunted "shakey" and saw another doe but before she could get close enough for a shot those coyotes let out another round of howels and yelps.  They did this nearly every morning around 7:30-8:00 and every evening around 6:00.  Both of us saw coyotes more than once during the week but had no shots at them.

We headed back to the cabin to change into our work cloths and get a bite to eat.  Now off to south property.  After about an hour of walking and looking we hung my stand on the north fence line about mid way of the property near a really really thick bedding area.  We put up a spare stand on the northwest corner of the property near a dry creek that had a scrape run along with several pretty fresh rubs.  But it was just not "the spot" we were looking for.

We hadn't put Darrells stand up yet.  Did another walk through on another dried up drain.  We found some highly used trails but still not what we were looking for.

However, I found something that had belonged to a hunter!!  I found a carbon arrow tipped with a big Magnus (i think) with a bleeder that had a Tradgang.com fl. green cap wrap fletched with 4 fl green fletch.  Anyone want to claim it?

As I mentioned we had yet to find Darrell the spot I wanted for him.  We got back on the 4wheeler and road up toward the road.  I told Darrell that if we were at home I would try to find some white oak acorns that had lots of deer droppings in them and put my stand up right on top of them.

We saw a really big white oak that towered above all the rest of the trees around it.  We had to crawl through the thick cedars and briars to get to it.  What a find!!  We found "the spot".  The problem now was that we had to play the wind and find a tree for a stand.  There were few trees that were big enough, and one that was way too big.  I looked at Darrell and he grinned.

I asked if he thought he could climb the big oak if he got to the first limb.  He thought he could.  We put two rachet straps together and strapped two sections of tree stick together and strapped it to the tree.  Like one of the squirrels we had been watching he was up the tree.  I tied another strap to his stand and threw him the other end.  The stand was locked on and looked perfect.  I told him that if he shot a doe the first time he sat on that spot that I would beat him with a stick.  :knothead:
Not only was there just alot of deer sign around there was alot of buck sign too.  Here is Darrell in the stand a few days later. (http://i752.photobucket.com/albums/xx165/dflanrey/395.jpg)

By this time of the day we were rushed to get cleaned up and on the stand.  It was almost huntin time.  Monday and Tuesday the weather was hot and very windy.

We got to our stands about 3:00.  My tree was small and was really swaying with the wind.  If I were at home I would not have hunted, but I wasn't so up the tree I went.  I didn't see anythig.

When I met Darrell back at the 4wheeler he had a big smile on his face and I was hoping he had shot a big one.  He had been surronded by deer all afternoon.  He saw 4 doe, 1 button, 1 4pointer.  He had shots on all the doe and passed on them.  I guess he believed I would use that stick on him.  :biglaugh:

We just thought it was windy Monday.  The wind  blew all night and was just getting cranked up.  By 9:00 that morning I still had not seen a deer from my stand.  I hadn't seen a deer since Sunday morning.  I was just about to get down and I got a text from Darrell.  All it said was that he had just had to make the shoot or don't shoot on a buck.

I couldn't take me stand down quick enough.  I had to find me one of those acorn spots.

Darrell had passed on a small rack 8 pointer.  He got some pictures of it.  It had a really white set of antlers.  Maybe he will post a pic of it.

After I had seen all those deer Monday and Tuesday I was pretty excited to get to my stand on wed.  However the morning was kinda slow it was still rainy and windy and I had only seen one doe real early in the morn.
It was about 10:15am and I decided to get down.  As I was climbing down I got my foot hung on my ladder on the last few steps and kinda had to jump down.  I landed on the ground real noisy like but when I looked up and there was a doe just 20 yds out looking right at me.  I couldn't believe it "How long had she been there"? "How could I have not known she was there"? and more importantly "HOW COME SHE WAS STILL THERE"?
I was able to slowly move over and unhook my bow from my string, knock and arrow and take two steps back to my left and squat down.  She picked her head up looked right at me and started coming right toward me!!!!  I couldn't believe what I was seeing.  She kept getting closer and closer.  I really think she was just curious to see what I was.
She got to within 5 steps of me but any time I would try to move my bow she would get nervous.
I was squatting on the balls of my feet and my legs were starting to kill me but I was afraid if I moved she would bolt.  After what seemed like ages, she finally turned broad side and started walking away.  I was able to get my bow up and as I pulled back thinking to myself how easy this was.  I let go grazing a limb right in front of me just enough to deflect my arrow up grazing across her back and coming to rest facing up jabbed in a tree.  All I had to show was a ball of freshly cut deer hair and complete disbelief in what just happened.  MISS #3    "[dntthnk]"

Although I had missed 3 times know. I chalked it up to some rushed shots and a little bit of bad luck.  Wed afternoon as was ready to stick one.
My chance came right before dark when a big doe stepped out at 17 steps. I confidently picked my spot and let the arrow go knowing I had just shot my first deer of the hunt.  Unfortunately my arrow wasn't as confident as I was as it flew right underneath her.  No excuses this time Kenny. I just flat missed!!!

Well, on Monday my hunt really came to a big time slow down.  I knew Darrell should see lots of deer and hopefully get some shots and as you have read his post he did just that.

I found a nice group of white oaks behind one of the ponds Kenny had showed us.  Darrell came to help me put my stand up and as we were looking for a tree he remembered Tracy posting about hunting behind a pond.  I looked to my right and there was one of the cedars that Tracy had hunted out of.  I'll have to give a big shout out to Tracy for trimming up some of the limbs.  A perfect tree.  Lots of sign.  I was for sure gonna see something here!

Monday afternoon around 6:00 I just knew I would get my chance.  I heard a deer coming from the pond.  Here it comes!  Staight to me!.  A perfect shot at 8 steps.  But wouldn't you know it, it was a 4 pointer.

From Monday afternoon until Thursday morning I did not see a deer.  Lots of time to watch nature, and imagine I was seeing deer that truned out to be leaves or tree limbs.  That kind of stuff.

We had a good visit with Kenny on Wednesday night.  I resharpened all of Darrells broadheads.  :archer2:  And told Darrell that I was going to kill something Thursday morning.

The weather changed for the better Wednesday afternoon.  A fron came through and a little rain.  Thursday moring was cool, clear, and very still.

At 7:30 two doe came through the draw at a fast trot.  I figured they were being chased and I was right.  About 50 yards behind them was a buck.  All three passed by me on the hillside facing me at about 30 yards.  They stopped about 60 yards away.  I couldn't tell if the buck was legal or not.  I pulled out the grunt call and gave him a try.  He came straight to me.  The doe followed him.

It was the 8 pointer Darrell had passed twice.  What a bummer!  Earlier in the week I had told Kenny I was not shooting a small buck.  :D

I let him go.  I was hoping one of the doe would give me a shot.  They left too.  As I stood there not believing what just happened, I heard a deer coming from behind me.  I was hoping the doe were coming back.  It was the little buck.  I had a first.  I watched him make a rub 10 yards in front of me.  He pawed the tree with his leg and licked it.

He made a small circle around my tree.  Never had a clue I was there.  I was begging him to leave.  He didn't leave.  I just hoped Darrell would forgive me and Kenny would not remind me that I said I was not shooting a little buck.

The shot was broad side at 9 steps.  I came to full draw and let er fly.  The zwickey "no mercy" on the working end of my arrow was a complete pass through and bedded up in the ground after going through the buck.

He made two hopps and jumped a little drain.  Stood still turning his head side to side as if to look for whatever just hit him.  Started to walk and piled up 25 yards from my stand. (http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x355/darrellm24/iphone170.jpg)

The two doe and the little buck had stayed with me 45 minutes.  It was 8:15 I sat there for the next hour laughing at myself and trying to reason things out.  Afer all, I told myself, I had not seen any deer for three days and I was going home tomorrow morning.  I had deer to eat!

I got down and went to see my deer.  He had a little surprise for me.  He had split brow tines.  One set was a little small but brow tines just the same.

I walked a little and took some scenic pictures while waiting on Darrell.  I met him at the 4 wheeler at 10:30.  He told me I should probably go get back on my stand because there was a biiiggg buck in the woods.  (I'll let him explain how he knows this fact!)  I informed him it wouldn't do me any good anyways because I didn't have a buck tag left!

Ok I left off at Miss #4. So here is the rest of it.
Even though I had missed 4 times I was aggravated but still knew I could shoot that bow.
So I got to my stand ready to get some redemption on a doe.  I only had one day left so it was time to bring home a deer.
It wasn't long after light when I heard what sounded like a buck making a rub far behind me.  I turned and looked and not long after I saw a real good buck coming up a the edge of the woods.  He stood behind a ceder tree for what felt like forever before he finally turned and started coming toward me.  He was a real nice 8 pointer.  He came in real careful and slow stopping to get an acorn every now and then. He was coming in perfect only a few more steps and I would have a perfect broadside shot.  I could here my heart thumping in my head.
He never took the other steps.  Instead he turned back and gave me a quartering away shot.  I took that opportunity and let my arrow go.  RIGHT OVER HIS BACK.     MISS #5      :banghead:    YEA 5

Well at this point I was mad, and frustrated and  I really didn't feel like I knew were my arrow was going once I released it.  So after a rest from dragging someone else deer out of the woods and a bite to eat. I gotta little form correction and pep talk form the "old man in-law"  and I was back to hitting my spots.  So I got "back on my horse" and tried it again that afternoon.
About 4 o'clock I had a small doe come in.  She fed on past me as two other big mature doe came in behind her.  It wasn't long before one of them gave me a good shot. I think I was more nervous on her than the big buck. If I missed again David probably wouldn't give me a ride home.  This time I wouldn't come up empty.  I finally connected.  I lot higher of a shot than I wanted but it got the job done.

Thanks to Kenny for a great place to stay, great place to hunt and great hunting stories and conversations at night.  Can't remember when I've had more fun.

Kenny use the pics any way you want on your site.  The deer looks good but I don't know about the fellar there with it.  :scared:    Also I have one of Darrell where his eyes are not glowing if you want it.  Ha!Ha!

As Darrell said, we had a great time.  The week passed too quickly.  I hope we will be able to do it again.

For the records, I saw 17 deer from the stand.  I shot at 2 and killed one.  Darrell saw I think 30 deer (20 from the white oak in 4 days), shot at 5 and killed one.

Update,

2 fellows from Utah and Idaho came in Tues. nite. One killed his first trad critter this AM, a nice midsized doe! He passed on a group of does a couple days back cause he was wanting to get a buck so badly. I told him to get a deer, then worry about a buck later!

The other had deer under him yesterday and today in AM, but when too dark to shoot! 3 bucks this AM , but right under him , yet he could only see shapes and the the whiter tines on their racks!

We've had wind the last 2 days, so I think the deer are skittish and hittin the cover early.

Oh, the doe taken was from the Gap stand.

I didn't finish that year for whatever reason, the last eve they were there, the young guy who just stared with trad stuff asked me, where would you go?

With the wind, I told him if I was a deer, I would ease out of the downwind edge of the big cedar patch where I laid up during the 35 mph winds just before dark.

He slipped in there in the afternoon and sat up by a pinoak with lots of drooping limbs. 2 big toms showed up and once were 12 feet from him,but he didn't move for fear of them spookin everything in the cover.

Just after that, 4 bucks showed up 20 yards south of him, so here we are .  Bucks at 20 yds, the dang turkeys at 10. So he sat and watched the bucks walk on past , then the turkeys went on to roost.

He said one of the bucks was like a muley, wide and tall. He is now hooked on whitetails and trad bows!!

He killed 2 whitetails from the ground last year with a ghille suit.

Sorry for the long story, I told it as it was told to me by a new trad addict.  :D
