99%of the guys I know at my local range and other ranges wouldn`t dare hunt deer with a trad bow. They say you won`t be able to shoot a buck with one, maybe does they say. I want to know who has shot bucks here,,pics would be great so I can prove these guys wrong.
-
I'll bet Fred Bear and Howard Hill would beg to differ....
-
Chexk out the avatars of some of the folks on here....
-
You have nothing to prove! Have them look in the history books and look at the pictures of the Indians harvesting 2000lb buffalo hundreds of years ago! Why prove something that's so ridiculous? Show him the thread of the "12 year old boy that just harvested one with his longbow"... It's still on page 1
-
Ive shot more than a few Bucks with trad gear.... Most ppl stay away from it bc they are more worried about putting a big deer down than enjoying the moment. Its true, with a compound you can tag a deer at 50yds with pracrice... Ive done it....
I love trad bc it is much more challenging which is so much fun to me. It takes some ppl time to step away from the "Gotta shoot a deer" mentality....
You go out and have fun with your trad gear....Dont worry bout them...
-
I agree that is a stupid statement by your buds!! Just have them buy a few DVDs of traditional bow hunts for deer. Tons of monsters shot by Trad gear. Del Austins buck which was the #1 non-typical for over 40 years was taken with a recurve and what do these guys think they used to kill deer before 1969, there were no compounds. Have them read this thread so they know what the rest of us think of their shear stupidity! Shawn
-
They say a buck is way too wary. They say it`s hard enough to hit a buck on high alert with a compound,,forget about a Trad bow.
-
Tell them it is better to remain silent and let people wonder if they are fools, than to speak and remove all doubt.
-
I won't shoot a deer on high alert with anything!!!
-
Check out the Harvest Threads and Avatars as stated earlier.
-
Aah the uninformed!!
-
In my opinion......please it's just my opinion. There is a mindset at "Ranges" that kinda gets crazy. You'll hear some crazy theories and because they attend there alot and live and breathe the sport of shooting a bow they come up with junk like those who were talking to you. The best thing for my own piece of mind at my range is to just go shoot and try to get better not engage in other peoples opinions about what to use to be successful. Some quotes from my range I've heard toward myself and others shooting..."How does your Wifes bow shoot" If a man is shooting a recurve under 70lbs draw. Which I'll add most of em ain't getting to full draw "Might as well shoot em with a field point" When someone shows up with broadheads under 1 9/16 cutting diameter. They absolutely love the 2" cut Simmons and believe it is inhumane and unethical to use less. My suggestion is go about your hunt and quit worrying what everybody else thinks. You know it is done many times a day all over this country.
-
I'd have them google Gene and Barry Wensel for starters.
I would venture to say that the good folks here on this site have accounted for several thousand! LOL!
-
I believe the highest scoring Boone and Crockett typical Whitetail ever taken with archery euipment (over 205 B.C. points) was taken with a Howatt Hunter recurve by a a hunter named I believe, Del Johnson.
-
All I have to say is LOL!
-
Im willing to go out on a limb and say HALF of the members have killed a buck with trad gear maybe more, the numbers go up every year not down. Its so easy, a caveman can do it !! :bigsmyl:
-
Wonder if they are curious of the content of the dark continent forum here..
-
If they dont think you can kill a buck then what would they think of all the bull elk and moose these guys shoot with there sticks.
-
I'm sorry but the weariest animal I have ever hunted is an ol' doe we named Grandma on our place. She has twins every year and will spot anyone and anything within 40 yards of her EVERY time. I have yet to be in the woods without her walking by and laughing at me.
Most bucks are a breeze compared to this seasoned mother of 8.
-
i think with the trad crowd its more about being a better hunter and not about the latest
wizbang gadget to kill that buck
-
They probably also believe that a light, fast, arrow is the best type arrow to use. And will be proficient at distances to 100 yards. (I've actually heard this statement made by a c-pound shop owner!)
-
If you have to explain, they wouldn't understand.
Over the years I've been in to many arguments and discussions with attitudes like this.My friend you have heightened your hunting experiences to a level they probably will never understand.all the best to you.

They aren`t really buddies,,just aquaintances.. At the other outdoor range I go to,there`s a whole bunch of trad guys, who take deer all the time.

Yeah,,I have a shop owner who feels that a light arrow is best when he hunts from a tree stand. He says the speed is what ya want.

come and sit in my trophy room!

For four years me and my son had a challenge. We had doe tags and one of the does in the area was a giant. when people would so much as slow down on the gravel road a half mile away, I have seen her simply sink into the brush and disappear. Neither one of us ever got a shot at her, no one else did either. Maybe a 6 year old buck is smart, but a giant grandma doe is a genius. Declaring a deer to be tough or smart by what they carry on their heads, says more about the hunter than it says about the deer.
-
some people just don't get it...... i was looking at some trad bows in my local shop and a guy asked me "what are you going to do with that?" i said i hunt with'em. he had the dumbest look on his face and then he said "you can kill a deer with one?" i just laughed and said you can kill anything on earth with one.

My brother-in-law uses a 70# compound and is a fairly big guy, in decent shape. While practicing in camp before last week's opener, I let him shoot my recurve (47# @ 28 inches). I won't mention the words he used when he tried to pull it back but let's just say they were very 'colorful'; it was quite funny. "I don't know how you do that without the let off," he said. Needless to say, this also led to a "How do you aim that thing?" conversation (I shoot instinctive so no sights on the bow). I don't see him ever trying traditional archery but he at least had an open mind about it, I just wish more people were of a similar mindset.

Do mule deer count! Maybe 20-30 bucks.
-
This is my best buck ever. I shot him in my second year of switching to traditional only bowhunting. In general, I have been much more succesful since switching to traditional equipment simply because I enjoy it more and hunt harder and more often.

Where's KentuckyTJ?

First buck I ever killed was with a 47# recurve. Never killed one when I hunted with compounds.

Evidently they haven't been busted by a doe. IMO, doe's are the ones who are more likely to bust you--its genetic.

Years ago I was in the Air Force and was stationed in Montana. When I got there two civilian guys I worked with asked if I was hunter. I told them I was a bowhunter and they both asked what I planned on hunting with it. When I said everything they laughed and said they had hunted for years with rifles and had never taken and elk or bear so "maybe" I could bag a mulie or whitetail. When I left 4 years later I had taken two bulls, two muley buck, a black bear that ranked in the top 20 for archery (at that time) and two whitetails. They still hadn't killed anything. I shot all of them with my 72# recurve!
-
-
They are idiots.
-
Ive been shooting trad for several years now and it still amases me that some of my friends want to know where my gun is hid in my truck when I kill a nice Buck with my bow . I laugh it off but it does rub my a little wrong .

Killed nearly all my bucks with traditional gear, including the one in my avatar...which I'm sure I'll never top, but you can bet I will continue to try!
-
Send them to http://mcaapcontrolledhunts.com/ . It is McAlester army ammunition depot near McAlester Oklahoma. They have special/controlled hunts every year and it is strictly trad only! They grow some monsters there. Check it out

That link doesn't work. It says, "You are not authorized to view this page".

No news to us but 100lbs or 300lbs, bucks or does all fall just as fast from a sharp head. They dont care what "speed" the arrow was going.
"Dead is dead" but have a similar situation work.
A work friend about wrecked his fork lift last night trying to drive and roll his eyes at the same time after I told him what my arrows weigh.
If they dont see it in an advertisement or on the horn porn channel......it CANT be any "good".
In this case ignornace is NOT bliss, IMHO. Their loss so I continue to attempt to explain the pros and greatly increased satisfaction of trad.
There is indeed a hearing loss problem if "inches of antlers" isnt included on the pro side though.
When the (Not)know it alls tell me to try a "real" bow.....I have a pat answer.
"I HAVE shot a few with a compound, many many more with a longbow or recurve. I HAVE "tried" both..........your turn now if you wish to continue the discussion".
Gets a bit quieter then. lol
God Bless
Slow

It don't matter what you use if you don't pick a spot.

I tell em ........ "I might use one of those compound things to shoot a doe , but it wouldnt mean nuthin to shoot a big buk with one !!! "
-
its not the weapon its the person behind the weapon. it that simple, just go hunt and have fun!
their mentality is the same as the people that want to ban guns to stop violence.
-
Stone Knife, I think when you shot that fawn his spots must've fallen off. Lol!!! That's the largest fawn I've ever seen. I would have liked to see him after he grew up.

Wow Mike thats nice !! really cool its spot and stalk :)

I believe they are absolutely right if referring to themselves. For they have convinced themselves that the challenge is much too great.
It is then easy to rationalize that this train of thought must apply to all.
There is no compelling need for me to prove anything with regard to the Stick and String other than to myself. The great gifts of traditonal remain both reserved and obscure from those who fail in earnest to seek it. Entitlement as merely viewed and not experienced is not in the book of traditional.
-
Lots of people wont have the willingness to endure practice, scouting and time in the woods to not have a sure thing (optimal equipment & gear) if the intended game comes into range. They also want an expanded range to increase success.
It is my experience that trad hunters tend to love the hunt as much as the harvest. So, their is no worry about whether we will be successful when given a shot. Regardless, the trad hunters confidence is usually high.

Foolish people like to spread their own foolishness.
Glad we choose not to think their way. Nice pics!
Heres my biggest yet. But I like all of them just the same, spike to heavy racks. ALLLLL GOOD!
