Title: Shipping Bows Overseas
Post by: SELFBOW19953 on October 12, 2011, 02:16:00 PM
Has anyone had a "good" experience shipping a bow overseas?  It seems that the max length allowed is 60".  So is it safe to assume that there are no 60+" American made longbows overseas?  Do bowyers, as a business, have special dispensation for oversize packages?

Last year I bought a Cari-Bow Peregrine from Abe Penner. The bow is 62 "long, when strung. So unstrung it will be longer. Add to that the cardboard box so I think you will end close to 70 inch.
I live in The Netherlands and there was not the slightest problem getting it here.

I have shipped a couple to Australia, but both were take-down bows, so the length wasn't an issue. I used USPS. I think the cost goes up considerably as the length increases. A lot will depend on the country you are shipping to. You may have to use something other than USPS. The 60" rule may be theirs.

Bowyers ship longbows generally using Fedex; 250-300 dollars is about the going rate. I have shipped takedowns in the past, and I sent a 70" water ski to a guy in Australia with a specialized carrier so it can be done; but it is painful to say the least. Also payment is not straightforward either. The best is an international Paypal and ship to a Paypal verified address.

250 to 300 dollars is absurd and not true! I and my friends always pay around the US 100,- for getting a bow over here. We live in The Netherlands/Germany.For that money you get unsurance and a tracking code. If I remeber well they use UPS.
Go ask Abe Penner from Cari-Bow and Ken Rohloff from Whippenstick! They know how it goes...

Well if they are doing it for $100 they are eating the difference.  Go to the UPS website and put in the numbers.  Prices run over $250 using them.

FedEX is a little less.

I just sent a three piece longbow to Sweden and it appears to have been delivered today, it was mailed USPS priority 10-3-11. So 9 days. Cost was $47. Sent it in a well padded box total weight 3lb8oz. It appears a 1 piece bow because of size throws a monkey wrench into the equation. The cost of shipping a 1 piece bow may be what you are asking about. 3 or 2 piece bow, no problem.

Anything over 60" is going to kill your wallet plain and simple. I had an estimate of over 400 US to send to Scotland. USPS wouldn't ship a tube over 60". UPS was scary expensive and FedEx wasn't far behind. When I got the bow from Scotland it came from a carrier I never heard of. But I will say, it came faster from Scotland than any bow I've bought from here.

I sent a recurve to Norway, it was only 56" and the box came out to be 59". It only cost $56 with USPS Priority Mail. UPS for the same was $150+. Once you get over 60" it's a different set of rules.

I have bought several bows from US to Norway.
When I have bought bows with a length more than 60" in the package it's quite expensive!!

For the last year it seems that the damaged items has grown bigger... Send the longbow in a pvc tube if it cost some USD more I would say better safe than sorry!

Plenty of US-built 70" bows here. We just use UPS or FedEx. We pay a lot extra for shipping, but we reckon it's worth it for a good bow.

One piece over 60" are quite expensive,I would check USPS,it takes a little bit longer anyway.
This is one of the reasons I prefere to use a TD.
also airlines charge you extra for a second bag,and with a one piece lb you need that.

Fedex from US to Brazil, for a 68" longbow, is around USD$250. Some bowyers knows how to ship to here by USPS, but they are just few ones. USPS says the maximum package length, to Brazil, is 42 inchs. But I know several guys who brought longbows via USPS and payd less than USD$50 for shipping. The USPS website says that it can be shipped to here tubes with length plus girth up to 79 inchs. Since a longbow is very slim, it seems to be possible to ship to Brazil. So it's not clear what can be shipped, and what cannot, via USPS.

Craig Ekin (HH Archery) ships his bows for a little less then 100 USD to Germany, insured via Fedex. Last year I bought a 64" bow from another TG Member. Also a little less then 100 USD, insured via USPS.

Joseph,

I just tried using the USPS postage calculator for Priority Mail International (on the USPS website) shipping to New Zealand, 7 lbs, 67x4x4".  The result was "There are NOT any Mail Services available for the specified mail piece".  At 60" it gives me a rate.  At 61" "There are NOT any Mail Services available for the specified mail piece".

What USPS mode did you use to ship to NZ?  I have an overseas buyer for a bow (I've had to turn down several others in the past).

Hubi,

I just checked the Fed Ex website and for an 8 lb package to Munich, th cheapest rate was $165.  The length of the package was never requested.

What am I doing wrong on these websites?  I can't seem to get the low prices everyone else does.

Call them up or visit them, tell them the size and weight of the package and they will fill you in. UPS told me a price and then told me it could go higher per customs and independent carrier in country.

I sent a 64" 1pc. longbow to Norway. I used a well padded tube over all length had to be close to 70",I don't remember the dia.
I used USPS international express, Less than $80
with all the insurace and tracking.
The usps website does not allow this but I have done it twice from my small town P.O.
I sent a smaller,56x4x8, box to Aus. with the same service and had no problems.
I would go ask a human.

Another thought is DHL. I used to ship to forign countries alot in a prvious life, and DHL was the best for that. My packages would be of smaller size most often back then.

Ive bought several bows from the US but all were takedowns (for that reason) so i cant really say anything to shipping of one piece bows.

Well someone is cheating and getting away with it.  All of the foreign countrys except Canada have a 60" max size with USPS.  Don't complain about it but I know our post office won't let it happen.  I've tried .. . LOL

It has been over a year since I shipped it that way, but I had to tell them what I needed ,"international express", Otherwise it was not gonna happen. Maybe I got lucky(twice) but I only paid 70-80$ and the bows went to the right place.   :archer2:      ;)   )

I have had plenty of bows shipped from the USA to here in Oz . Occasionally a bowyer will ship for less than $100 dollars ... but in the main it will cost me between $180US AND UP TO $290US .

Shipping length is never a problem ... the cost of it is . I have been a dealer for years for numerous bowyers and it is just the way it is ... doable but expensive .

Yep, occasionally we get one cheap and I think that is more the bowyer luckily finding an agent who gets it done cheaply ... but it is very rare .

Mmmm I just bought a 60" Buffalo Bow coming from Texas to Australia cost $80 via USPS priority international.
Originally I was buying a Cari-bow from Abe but we could not scource shipping from Canada for less then $270 even looked into sea freight etc.
When I was on the hunt for a bow I had several offers from the US shipping varied from $80-$120 quotes for $80 were both from FedEx and USPS. Only one was $120 and that was FedEx.
I could not explain the difference from Abes bow coming from Canada vs a Bow coming from US so I checked the cost shipping the Cari-Bow to 90210 Beverly hills (only zip code I could think of) the cost $260! Maybe I did something wrong but I tried it twice.
Contacted a few other Bowyers and quotes for 1pc 60" bows were from $50-$100 insured with tracking.
Maybe it's not so much of sneaking it past as much as some people getting served and or resistance from post offices that don't know it is allowed or are unwilling to look outside what they normally ship to find the service that allows it.

When I looked at the USPS website there was a shipping priority international and no measurement restriction givin.
FedEx offers one I found but can't remember off hand what it was called but it was the only one to offer service over 1.5m it allowed maximum length as 2.0m
I hope this info is of some value.
Fwiw my bow is in transit but I'm tracking it and have a copy of the reciept

I just shipped (this week; Wednesday) a 60" longbow to Australia in Sch. 40 PVC Pipt via USPS Priority and insured.  Cost for the shipment was $83.30 (9.5 Lbs.).  The buyer informed me the bow was in Australia (customes) on Thurs.  That to me is pretty good service.  Don't know how long it will be in Customs though.
