What are you favorite wood combos in either handle or limbs?
I know I'm particular to the para rosa limbs w/ para rosa and black colored wood combos in the handle. I also like the natural woods colors as well.
-
My favorites....cocobolo with osage, but there are others that look well also! Limbs...I like waterfall or tamo ash! Good grainy elm is nice also!
-
and I'm partial to the walnut/maple on my new Lost Creek I just posted.
-
Koa and Maccassar or wenge.Koa lights up like a Christmas tree. It has a depth like no other wood I have seen.
Ebony and Cocabola is pretty neat too as is Claro Walnut and ebony.
I have built a couple of bows of super fancy maple and purpleheart that are simply stunning.
Then there is Myrtle and Koa
Hey, I guess I just like wood.
God bless you all, steve

I really like the looks of walnut/osage. I have a stunning 56" Pronghorn one piece with a walnut riser and osage limbs. Looks great when the osage was "new", now after it has aged a fews years, looks even better.
-
Osage limbs and Bacota riser really floats my boat. Really like how they look when they have aged together for a few years.
-
The black natural figuring and grain of Kingwood or Cocobolo in contrast to its red/orange base wood color really looks great to me. If these woods are highlighted with osage or black ebony, then all the better.

Forgot to add that the Osage in the middle pic is really mellowing and turning that nice honey color. Looks even better with the Cocobolo as it ages.
-
Yew and purpleheart, Fantastic combination. great choice you made on that. Do you have a picture.
God bless you, steve
-
My favorite riser wood is Texas Ebony… I’m torn on the limb veneers between Mesquite and Osage… probably leaning toward the Osage after it ages..
-
I second Sixby on that Koa. Grows in Hawaii. I just sent off an email question to my bowyer on making a bow for me in Koa. I think he has used it in the past.

Wow ,some real nice combos..........
-
Dave need some pictures "para rosa" ? I don't recall ever seeing it but that's not unusual for this old dude if it's been more than a couple of days... :)
-
This is a combination that I built for a charity auction in Jackson Wy. It is spalted maple and koa and I thought it was one of the nicer combos I have seen. The koa was an extremely rare piece and very hard to find. I have not replaced it yet.
God bless you all, Steve

I have a Hill "Half Breed" with yew limbs and walnut riser that I think looks good.
I also like that combination of ebony and osage posted above. (Hmmm... I might have to get a Hill "Owl" one day.)

Very nice Steve.... That is some Georgous KOA!!!
-
I've seen some very nice zebra wood combinations. I like yellow and canary wood is very nice as it doesn't darken like osage over time.
With veneers almost anything is possible and there have been some very unusual and stunning woods under clear glass.
Bubinga, cocobolo, ipe, padouk, East Indian and rio rosewood, sapelli, and tulipwood are just some of the woods that I have seen.
-
here's one you don't see every day.....
can you guess what this stuff is?

My favorites change like the seasons.
One particular combo that has interested me for years is a macassar riser w/bocote flare and bocote limb veneers.
The Zircote riser with tiger Myrtle limbs has possibly been one of my all time favorites. Since I own one, I just had to find another favored combo.
Best of luck choosing.

can you guess what this stuff is?
Marble Wood...what did I win?

Coasre500 cam the closest... Black and white ebony is what they called this stuff. Roy Mackey found it about a week ago and we are are going to build him a Sasquatch RC out of it.
That board weighs 14.5 pounds with a 14% MC level.
it's pretty dense material.
Check out these Black walnut riser blocks....

Just got my Macassar ebony with ebony riser and stained yellow birch accents from Striker yesterday and love it. Ordered another Striker today with maccassar limbs and osage riser with maccassar flare. I think it will be my new favorite when the osage get's good and aged.

I have a Whippenstick that's a couple weeks away now. Macassar footed with Wenge and Osage accents, I used the Osage because I know it will aged and blend in nicely.
