The other day I was drawing back on a big Ohio doe at ten yards. But out of the corner of my right eye I spotted a flash of "WHITE" I turned my head slightly and saw a big male skunk with its butt up and "aiming"... my in"stink" jumped in and in one smooth motion .... swung and put a woody dead center into his "WEAPON" !!! It was the Doe, Me or the SHUNK that was going to get shot. The Doe and Me won. The doe just walk off slowly. I think he knew that SHUNK saved his life. What a interesting hunt! Sorry shunk I had to take you out!
-
it would be difficult to put into words the thoughts that just ran through my head.lol at "my in stink" nice quick thinking to keep you out of a big stink. now i gotta ask , how do plan on skinnin that and not have that weapon go off
-
Having been sprayed before, you made a good choice.
God Bless,
Nathan

That is a very unusual skunk coloration! Kinda a "backerts" skunk, (no pun intended) to be white with a black stripe!
I'm waiting for the answer to the above question about skinning it?
If so, don't make a quiver. Guy bought one yrs ago at Denton and it rained on us... that quiver , once wet,lit up like it was a live skunk! :biglaugh:
-
It's probably just me, but that's disgusting.
-
:archer:
-
What did you do with the arrow??
-
Jim Wright...not as "disgusting" as me walking around With a FULL shot of shunk on me!!! I smell bad enough already !!! lol !
Well I wen't back yesterday and it was just to "smelly" yet to get arrow or hide. Would love to have hide. Girlfriend thinks I should wear it to keep my shaved head warm...hmmmmmm!
-
Good shot!!!
Probably poked a hole in his scent gland but I'm not sure about that, Skunk anatomy is not my specialty ....
Keep that arrow in the quiver for a cover up scent...
I don't know if it worked but they used to sell that stink to hunters
-
Good Texas heart shot!
-
Looks like center shot blow-hole. Believe I'd have taken the doe...cause I'd be way too nervous to shoot the skunk. Good shooting nonetheless. The experience alone is worth the shot.
-
That one should go down in the anals of history!

So many jokes come to mind that I really shouldn't post here......
I'll just say nice shot :-D
-
That would make a nice hat.....someday. :saywhat:
-
...I knew you guys would like this one !!! lol....anyway sure glad I wasn't hit with the ..."STINK" !
-
..remember .."skunk Screen" that they sold in the 70's. A two part mix ! work good for cover scent!
-
I got slightly hit by a skunk when driving down a field path, it sprayed my van as I drove past it and my windows were open. I had a metallic taste in my mouth every time I got near or in my van, so I shot it to put it out of my misery. It is illegal to shoot skunks in Iowa, so it is doing fine and I drive a little Subaru now and keep the windows up.
-
Way to plug the hole.
Looks like the lil' stinker died from too much fiber.
Sorta stinks that the doe got away.
I know you're supposed to pick a "spot"..but jeez..lol
-
Nice shot!

I do remember that two part stuff... Fraternity pranks really took a dive when that stuff was available...had to mix to get the smell... guys would spray one part on the manifold, then wire a cheap plastic bottle of the 2nd ingredient on the same spot of the manifold and when the engine heated up, it melted the plastic bottle and it combined on the engine block...
I never, ever, ever parked my car anywhere NEAR those pranksters! That was in the day when hoods didn't lock from the cockpit! :scared:
When trapping in MT, we got big syringes from the Vet with rubber stopper bottles and if we caught a skunk... used to give em a shot of the stuff Vets use to knock out critters and for some reason, skunks are prone to die quickly from that anethesia stuff... then we'd fool with the other needle to draw the amber liquid out, shoot it in a rubber stopper bottle.
Danged stuff was pure gold. Lure makers paid dearly for it.
Never had a mishap, but a buddy did... Lord amighty that is potent stuff!
-
Nice shootin', you really 'Plugged' the little bugger! :bigsmyl:
-
You made the right choice, disgusting or not !
-
Nice shot.
I don't think I would use the hide though. It isn't yet fully prime, at least it wouldn't be in these parts. Can't kill'em in KY right now either. We have to wait a couple more weeks until trapping season comes in and then they're open to hunting as well. I used to trap and I'm telling you right now, skunks ain't no fun skinning! Minks ain't much better skinning either 'cause of the stink, but at least their price is worth it!
-
I realy hated to shoot.... but it was a "defend" act! Never shot a skunk before....sad!
-
man,i would get a rug made out of it...john
-
Wow, never seen a skunk that color. Is that common in your neck of the woods?
I'd like to shoot a skunk...I want just one skin. So far, I've missed 2.

-
I agree with you Jim Wright.
-
Landman ..I'd bet you'd think different if the skunk was aiming at you at 10 yards.... Ever been hit by a .."SKUNK" ! not a good thing ! Anyway I respect your thoughts..Jeff

Good call shooting the skunk. Sleeping on the couch isn't fun! I got sprayed by one at close range before...eyes swelled up and my nose burned so bad for a couple hours. No fun...let alone the smell.
-
Nice shot!
-
I hope you saved and ------- the arrow! :biglaugh:
-
Good for you and great shooting I hate skunks and kill them when I can in my yard. Widow

I would like to clarify my feelings about this picture being disgusting to me and I am truly not trying to start a piss fight as I realize that I am in the minority over 30 to 1 from the other replies.
I feel that most of us here are aware that as sportsmen we are well served to avoid kill photos with cigarettes, beers in hand or feet on animals as if we had "conquered" them. I looked at one here recently where the hunter who posted it apologized for not noticing the bucks tongue portruding from it's mouth in the field photo. I concur and believe that we need to be respectful of any animal killed from squirrels to Bison. I simply feel that a photo of an animal with an arrow portruding from it's ass is disrespectful and frankly, disgusting.
-
At the angle he was and in self defense, he put an arrow in the vitals (just wasn't broadside). Can't say that I wouldn't do the same thing, but I'm not sure I would post pics of it.
-
Ok...Admin. please remove Topic ! Have a great hunting season Guys !
-
I find the scenario a little hard to believe. Even if its true a step or two in the opposite direction would have sufficed. You didnt have to shoot the skunk. Period.
-
Just googled it. Skunks can only spray 10 feet. Not 10 yards. I doubt it even lifted its tail at you.
-
Thanks Jim for explaining it so I didn't have to. I suspect the skunk was killed for all the wrong reasons including being able to post and boast.
-
skunks are legal game here in pa, both trapped and hunted. and there pelts are really nice!!
-
Bucksbuouy... You live one state over. Your welcome to come over to Ohio and hunt with Me.. Maybe then You will see I'm a OK Guy. I'm serious.. come on over ! ,Jeff
-
I guess I didn't have time too.."GOOGLE" ..that split second.. But thanks for all the info... Hope you never have ..Mr. Stinky cross paths !!!
-
Great shooting, Awesome.
-
.Once again ..I "really" never wanted to shoot the skunk or ever would! It all happened so fast.. One thing for sure..I didn't want to get hit by "STINKY". If it happened again ..I think I'd do the same thing... Bad things happen when you get hit by "STINKY" Rest my case! Thanks to all with good intentions !!!

You might want to pull this considering open season for skunk doesn't start till Nov. 10th. Just trying to keep you out of trouble.
