The next time I'll be able to spend some time deer hunting will be during the "Non-Bow" season... I've had many close ones the past few weeks but no meat yet... Gearing up and packing a non-bow almost feels like cheating. Wouldn't it be better then cool to take a deer with a longbow during rifle season?
*** Talk Me Into It!... Won't take much..... :) ***

-
I took my longbow out today, this is the firearm opener in Indiana. I just don't have the desire to take a gun anymore. Take the longbow I think you'll be much more satisfied.
-
every time the season changes here in ct we just but on a orange vest and if your more that ten feet off the ground you can take it off, more deer on privet or bow only areas
-
Take your bow Mikey.....you want regret it. Our rifle season started today, it will be so much sweeter when I pull into the check station having killed my deer with my bow. (especially since the check station is at the archery shop I used to work at, still have very good friends there.)
David
-
Be who you are, take it out.
-
Absolutally, yes I will bowhunt during rifle season.
-
I may take the flintlock out some, but... I'll absolutely be hunting with the longbow! I've got a nice little patch of private land to hunt. Let all the rifle hunters push 'em on over to me!
-
I got my buck tag punched. Now it is freezer filling time then maybe back to longbow for late archery.
Rob
-
I gun hunt from time to time, but I prefer the recurve in my hands. So mostly hunt trad in all seasons. The buck in my Avatar was taken during late muzzleloader season with my 64" Schafer Silvertip curve.
-
Always take the bow during our IN gun season. Most of the bigger bucks taken off this property have been taken then.
Mike
-
Did gun hunt two days 25 years ago. Two bucks in two days.
Actually do not possess any hunting firearms so the answer is a resounding 'YES'.
If the thrill of harvesting a deer with any other weapon than the stik & string would be nearly as exciting, then one might consider another choice. Even on a multi thousand dollar hunt I will choose to go home empty handed and yes I have with absolutley no reservations. The thrill of the hunt and the wonderful experience and comraderie was satiating.
The choice is yours and yours alone.
-
I was in my stand today and thinking that very thought. It's tough to get them close here during rifle though. Since the freezer is empty I'll play it by ear. If I can get one this week I will definately extend my bow season. I have a new bow in the works, maybe I will get it in time to use this year.
-
My trad gear is all I hunt with. From bullfrogs to bucks.
-
Yes buddy I will but it will be dads .35 next weekend at Noahs request. Then back to the longbow. I won't even be above slaying some bushy tails next time out. Can't do that with a rifle.
-
I don't hunt any other way....for anything anymore. Just a choice I made years ago.
-
This is my first year with the longbow. (I've taken two with the recurve). No deer yet this year and the gun opener is Wed. coming. I decided that at least the first deer this year will be with the longbow. If I don't get one, I don't get one. I've already missed twice, I'm determined to make it happen.
-
Wow! Thanks everyone... Hunting the hard way and having game real close is what drew me to trad in the first place... Picture me in full camo, face painted and an orange vest. What makes us tick is "how" we hunt. Kinda romantic I think.
... mike ...
-
The orange army is too big for my liking on public land in PA. I'm stayin' home.
Our bow season and flintlock season comes back in the day after Christmas. Not sure which I'll take - maybe the longbow somedays, maybe the flintlock some.
-
I will be hunting private land. Just have to wear my orange.
Martin
-
my bow is my only hunting tool. i do own a shotgun but thats for home protection only. i dread shooting a modern firearm, i dont want to make the ringing in my ears worse. it doesnt bother me at all to be hunting with my bow during regular gun season. rv
-
No, the wonderful State of Illinois won't allow me to.
-
Were not allowed to hunt with our bows during to first 2 guns seasons in Iowa. :banghead: :banghead:
-
Well here in Georgia, during gun season you can shoot does wtih a bow, and with a limit of twelve you get lots of chances to fill your tag.
-
please use your bow  :archer2:
-
I took my very first trad. deer during youth deer gun season 2 years ago when I was 16. Wasen't great big 115" or so but the story was great. Gun season is one of my favorte time to bow hunt.
-
Been gun season here for a couple weeks. I have gone out with a rifle 50% of the time and my bow the other 50%. The rifle is good for when its raining.
On the otherhand my motivation and drive to hunt is much much lower with a rifle.
My predatorial instincts seen to be dulled with a rifle in my hands, and sharpened with a bow in my hand.
I say stick with the bow
-
I will take a firearm just in case I can possibly see a deer. I like to eat venison, so I have to increase my odds. I like bow hunting much more, but I would also like to get a deer for the freezer. With 57 hours in so far and not even seeing a deer yet.....what can I say! :notworthy: Mike only you can decide for yourself!!
-
The only way I hunt is with my bow. Nothing against guns I just favor my bow!!
-
Gun season opened today here in Missouri. I was in my stand with my longbow. Nuff said.
-
Took the gun once last year and killed a doe at my son's request. It will stay on the wall this year.
-
Mike, I know you are not a weapons snob. Bring both to your cabin and see what your heart tells you at the time.
Now if you were hunting closer to home, its bow only any how.
Something tells me Venison tastes better when killed with a bow :dunno: just saying
-
Killed my first with a gun. Decided then it wasnt for me. Been pack,n a bow every sence. Been trad for a few years now. Havent had any luck...yet! It'll come if I'll be patient. Love the traditional gear, I'll never go back!
Jason

Since I have permission to hunt on private land, it's bow only for me.
-
I'm all bow all the time.
-
i was and am thinking about this myself. i sold all my long centerfires a few years ago and bought a encore frame. first brl was a 24in. 243 then i traded it for a 16 3/4 in. 243 pistol brl. just incase i wanted to use a butstock. then i got a 44mag 22 and my favorite brl so far is a 50 cal muzzleloader. all pistol brls. i still have a flintlock long gun. so i came up with this in my head for wepons to use this year during gun season.
will be 50cal pistol and 1968 bearcat or gem longbow if i cant get them in close enough to fling a woodie. ill pop one with the pistol
-
That's all i hunt with year round. It doesn't matter what season it is. :)
-
I enjoy hunting with handguns, however, I took a doe on a WMA managed hunt a few weeks ago with a handgun to make sure I had some venison in the freezer. Went back to my longbow that afternoon and have no plans to hunt with anything else the rest of the season.
-
I'm bow only at this point and have been for the last two years now. Just a choice that I have come to due to several reasons; first, I can't afford to spend money on guns when I would rather spend the money on bows, secondly, most of the places that I hunt you couldn't shoot past 25 yards if you wanted to, and thirdly, I just like to hunt with the bow. :)
-
Anybody ever take both to the stand? Never done that, but thinking about it as an option.
I am going to stick it out for a good while and have the "want" (as my favorite coach would say), but if the season is running low I want some meat . . . . I appreciate the purist approach, but sometimes it's all about kicking back and celebrating backstraps in the cooler. :D Your mileage may vary.
-
I'll be hunting with my bow most of the time. Going to camp Monday (season opened today) just to let some of the crowd thin out.
-
Took the longbow out today. Only saw squirrels.
I heard many booms in the distance. None close though.
-
Yes, that's the plan. Here, we can hunt on our own property without orange during rifle, if you are an archery hunter. Sure is a lot more fun.
-
Hunt with what you want and don’t worry about it. Do whatever makes you happy being out hunting as long as you follow all the rules.
As for me I don't care for gun season all that much anymore. It just is not the same. We do eat a lot of venison in a year so I would take them with a gun if I wasn’t getting it done with a bow. I am getting it done with the bow so no need to gun hunt this year for the sake of meat. I wouldn’t go out this year in gun season, but my dad is in his late 70’s, and I plan to go out with him. Too many other hunters around to even think about shooting a deer and not having it go down quick. There would be a good chance of it getting shot again before it fell, or I could end up spooking all the deer off the place to the fence setters trying to find it if it ran a ways into our heavy cover. Then there is the idea of not being armed when encountering tress passers. Some years I only go out to keep people off the place.
-
Absolutely for me. That is a personal decision though. Hunt however you enjoy it.
-
Take your bow ! I have gun hunted, and every deer I have got with it I could have shot with my bow, furthest shot with a rifle, 35 yds. furthest shot with a bow (wheelie) 27yds. furthest shot with a trad. 29yds. This is why I only go with the trad gear now.
It always tastes better with a bow, it's all in the head.
But if you need the meat, I can fully understand taking the rifle.
-
Longbow only for me. Hunting with firearms simply doesen't do it for me.
-
Not legal to bowhunt during the gun season here in IL, so I'll rake leaves and catch up on things.
-
Will have my Cari-Bow with me during gun season here in Oklahoma, only drawback is wearing that darn orange.
-
Nope, can only hunt here within the season you choose a weapon for. I have to choose a weapon and for elk have to choose east or west side of the state...PR
-
I did not know there was a "non-bow" season. I always hunt with my trad bow.
Bisch
-
Take the bow! When the Moose gun season opened I was the only guy at the camp with a bow. The gun hunters filled the tag within 1/2 hour of opening day. Now they had a whole week ahead of them with nothing to do. I roamed the woods all week shooting birds and got to within 15 yards of a nice bull. Had a blast!!
-
I'm as much a gun guy as I am a bow guy. I've always enjoyed hitting the woods with the rifle that my grandfather passed on to me. My weapon of choice will depend on which stand I end up hunting.
-
That is complete nonsense that some states don't let you hunt the more primitive weapon during gun season. :dunno: I thought all states had the logical rule of the greater includes the lesser - if it's legal to gun hunt, it's legal to pistol, ml, or bowhunt. Didn't know about this. Yet another stupid game law like no Sunday hunting.
-
First year that I'll be taking my bow out during gun season. Told my dad and he looked at me like I was nuts!! :biglaugh:

Yes, complete nonsense. THAT's why it was passed into law in Illinois!!! It is part of our proud tradition as a state run for the benefit and mindset of Chicago at the expense of the rest.
That is also why we seem to be the ONLY remaining state with "residents who are too dumb" to protect ourselves with Concealed Carry permits.
Don't mean to hijack the thread but I thought your assessment caught us spot-on!
PS- I'll be out with my bow and orange vest during the later gun seasons, when it is legal to do so. Go figure....
-
Nope.
Got my cap'n ball all ready for for tomorrow.
-
I will be. With an orange vest and hatband, though. Like Kappemmeister - I blow the dust off the flintlock as well.
-
Got my buck with a recurve the first day of gun season. Have not hunted with aa rifle in several years.
-
1st yr they are allowing us to hunt with our bows during gun season here in WI. THat being said this coming weekend will be with the rifle at deer camp with family and then some bowhunting on my own land during the week when the weekend warriors are gone. Not sure I would do it on public (especially opening weekend of gun), WI has a pile of hunters. I generally only p/u the rifle to hunt with the family. cameraderie and all that good stuff. Been out west several times for elk hunting during muzzleloader and always use my bow. Just prefer the intimacy and simplicity of the longbow to the gun.
-
My biggest trad buck was on opening day of rifle season. I hunt with a longbow no matter what season is in, but you hunt with what you want to. Its your choice to make.
God Bless,
Nathan
-
Im still young and ithcy, so il probly kill a nice one with a smoke pole, but after that its back to a recurve! It wont be but a few years and i will be trad only. But for the time being i still like killing. Altough i cant complain, ive gotten 3 does and about a 130 9pt with my 'curve this season.
-
the desire to carry the gun for me is not there like it use to be.. I love my trad gear for a doe brings the nerves back to me just as the first deer I ever shot as a young lad..To me a doe is a trophy for me...Sure I kill a lot more with the gun, but with trad the hunt just starts when the the animal appears, unlike a gun it is soon to be over... Don't get me wrong I am not trying to say there is anything wrong with guns, I just enjoy ever aspect of the trad world, even if I dont even see any game...
-
We can't really bow hunt during the gun season(s) here in IA. I can take a bow after shotgun is over during late muzz. If I feel up to it I may hunt. but as of right now my tags are full. I'd have to go buy another anterless tag
-
That is standard practice for us but I drew a special muzzleloader tag so I figured I would dust it off and see what happens for a day. Otherwise it is Sept 15 - Jan 31st for us.
-
Nope not me....Using a rifle while the rest of the world is also dressed in blaze orange. Soon as big game general season is over its back to the longbow for rabbits and hopefully a coyote, fox and bobkitty.
-
Only went gun hunting a few times about 30 years ago I always hunt rife season with by bow.Lots of time I see more deer for all the hunters in the woods moving them.
-
There are some states that wont allow you to bow hunt when rifle season is open. How crazy is that?
-
Always hunt with the bow, not matter what season
-
Missouri allows you to hunt with a bow during gun season, but yo have to buy a gun tag. I wish they would allow unused archery tags for that, but I'm sure there's more revenue the way it's set up.
-
no choice here ...
-
Leave your other weapon at home, just take your bow. You'll be glad you did, but be sure your regs will allow it. It is my understanding that some states will not allow you to hunt with a bow during the gun season.
-
Stay with bow. More rewarding in the long run.
But make sure to wear orange in public areas.
Good luck to you!
-
Bow only for me, I've completely lost the desire to hunt with firearms.
-
I hunt only with trad gear (for me, woodies and selfbow)
Ted

This very question was on my mind last week as I rifle hunted and read here of guys getting their deer . I'm thinking, is the bow season still on? Here, it's been gun for 3 weeks now.
But I'm not too pleased to be afield with the gun, for the first time ever. Actually was just looking at my 3 guns and thinking, why not turn these into another bow or ...? I can't believe it.
BUT this is all I think about now, so maybe more money coming into the archery account.
Gotta like that!
-
its been gun season here for a while. I rely on a certain amount of venison to feed me every year. So if I dont kill enough with the recurve by the last week of rifle I will break out my long range competition gun to go grocery shopping. Then I have a small peice of land that is in the zone for a late archery :)
-
Last time I took the gun was 1989. I'll be out there with my bow with the orange army. I have to wear orange to but I'm fine with that.
-
Last weekend I went out with my brother in law after a big buck I called in two weeks prior. The shot opportunity never materialized for me on that day. I guiltily grabbed my 30-06 and headed out in the early morning with him and sure enough I spotted the buck about 400 yards off. With the heat in my hand my heart wasn't in it. Up to that point I had 3 good opportunities to shoot a deer with my bow but things just didn't come together. I couldn't bring myself to shoot this buck with a gun - it wasn't the same. On that note I gave the nod to BIL and he obliged. It was his first big buck.
I have yet to take a deer with my bow but I feel closer than ever. I was out twice this weekend and I missed a decent 8 point buck (P.A.S) and two days later I had a little fork horn trot past my blind at 22 yards... he busted me at half draw. I love trad and I think I really have the bug.
-
Yep.
-
Every chance I can...

Not even an option, made the decision many many years ago.To me its the quest.

That is the spirit! Keep at it the rewards are quite tasty! ;)
-
I mostly hunt with my longbow now-a-days so yes I will hunt with my bow during the gun season.
-
No challenge with a gun. Not much of one with a
compound bow. Thats a big part of why I was intrigued by Traditional archery to begin with.
I got made by the biggest buck of my life thusfar
while drawing down on him a week ago. With a gun
or compound I would be eating him right now. But
the HUNT was AWESOME!! me vs. him damn near equal. I LOVE IT!
-
Can't in Wa state. Have to select your tackle before you purchase a big game hunting license and the tags reflect your selection.
-
Absolutely>>>>~~~~~>
-
I guess I’m kind of odd, I don’t hunt deer it’s been 20 something years since i purchased a deer tag. I chase hogs, so the only time i don’t hunt is during deer season. I stay out of the woods so i don’t mess up somebody’s deer hunt still hunting for hogs, plus our deer season is during the hottest part of the year here in California so i stay home where its cool and let people chase there deer
-
I hadn't bowhunted at all during gun season since I got a bullet thru my leg. But 2 yrs ago I decided if I could find a couple little honey holes that I felt safe in, I'd try again...
Two years ago I shot this coyote on opening day...
Then last year the day after Thankgiving, 7 years to the day of my accident, I shot this buck...
I'll be out again this year in the same 2 little honey holes...
-
Yep! That's what I just did.
-
yes! i shot a doe last thursday during our muzzle season with my long bow
-
im going to try a spot next to my house a few times. left it alone all archery. since you cant gun hunt in thsis spot im hoping deer will use this as a safe zone to get away from the gun fire. I will be there to greet them :)
-
As much as I can....yyyyyyyepppppp!!!!
-
I never use a gun. Just my preference. Good luck to everyone the rest of the season. Watch your safety around the gun hunters.
-
You'll most likely shoot something-but you'll feel bad after!!
-
dont even own a hunting gun! BOW ONLY for me from fish to deer!
-
... ...
-
hell yes im taking my bow, after all im a bowhunter
-
As a rule I don't like to be in the woods during rifle/gun season. However, now that gun season is almost half over and my big buck is still out there, I am seriously considering going back out in spite of the gun hunters. During the week it isn't too bad, but on the weekends or a holiday it is dangerous I think.
Oh, I know he is still there because he freshened his scrape last night and I recognize his footprint there too. Hope he waits on me LOL.
Joe

I will be out Sat. morning opening of our WI gun season. I'm in the CWD zone so I can bowhunt during the gun season. The last few years I just didn't care to even pick up a gun. I might take out my .54 cal muzzleloader this year and give it a try, my freezer is getting empty.
I shot this buck opening morning last year.
-
I always do, and enjoy every minute of it as much as any season. See ya winter bow?
-
I only hunt four-legged animals with a bow. I love rifles and am an excellent shot (yet can't hit the broadside of a barn with a pistol, heh), but I have no interest in hunting with a rifle anymore (I do hunt birds with a shotgun on occasion). I also ground hunt exclusively (no pop-up blinds, no tree stands, etc). I'm just a glutton for punishment I guess. :)
-
Since I started hunting traditional my guns haven't seen day light .
-
What else is there? A rock, a spear? That might work.....
-
Wha Yea!
-
Yooo MC Hammer. :wavey: Permit Bow [now]Zone 2 New Jersey Season started Oct 29th-Dec 24,26-31 2011. During that time you have muzzleloader and 6 day firearm going on. I will be out every chance I can get with one of my sticks and a string! :archer:
