Spent a week out hunting private property with a friend of mine. LOTS of wind this week which made for some crazy times in tree-stands and some major racket from flapping canvas.....Here's some pics of our camp:

As a self professed "meat-hunter", I was being a bit too selective, since the buck sign was heavy and I decided to try and focus on getting a bigger buck than my normal.... I even passed on a couple does, but my freezer isn't empty, so I figured I could spend some time trophy hunting....
The neighboring crops didnt' get harvested untill late last week, so I think that really hampered our hunting, as neither of us had much in the way of close-up encounters with deer untill about Thursday afternoon. Things picked up fast after that, but unfortunately for me, my vacation time has come and gone....We both had some great times in the woods and time spent with normal camp stories, reminiscing, etc...
Saturday mornging, however, the tide was turned! my friend, Jim West was hunting as primitve as he could this year. He has hunted with his own self-bows for many years, but this year decided to turn things up a notch. He spent this summer crafting and testing some primitve arrows: river cane, flint, and 2 fletch tied on with sinew, using bees-wax to waterproof the wrappings.....
He missed as small buck Fri. night while hunting from the ground in the heavy wind. His bottom limb hit the ground and sent his arrow crazily off track. He was going to put them away, his confidence in his primitve arrows shaken. I told him that the arrow wasn't at fault, what happened would have sent ANY arrow off track. I told him: "Take that arrow out tomorrow and just go and kill something with it" ...and I guess he DID listen to me:

I got a couple more days to hunt yet, before gun season stirs things up......Don't think I'll match his though for pure primitive success!!

Oh yeah...... I was impressed. Bigger hole than my buzzcuts left! (But I did get 2 holes though). He shot slightly quartering away: top of liver and 1 lung = 60 yd. run and crash.
The real kicker: I've shot 2 deer this year and had 2 carbon arrows snap 1/2; his river cane shaft was still in 1 piece!!!! unuseable (split and bent) but still in 1 piece!! :knothead: :bigsmyl:
