I dont post often and I have only made the switch to traditional in the last couple months, but what I saw last night I had never seen before. I'm a taxidermist and avid hog hunter, going several times aweek on average. I have always used a bow and have taken some big pigs but nothing like what I saw last night. I got a call after dark from a buddy that said he had shot a big hog and wanted to skin it for a full body mount so I jumped in the pickup and went to give him a hand with it. This thing had a rock hard shield almost 3 inches thick and was by far the thickest, hardest shield I have ever seen. Shooting a compound bow my whole life, my first thought was it would have to be a quartering away shot to take it with a bow, but then my mind switched over to my longwbow that I now use and I had my doubts. I know it is more than possible but still alot to ask of any bow. How do you guys stick the big ones and get them on the ground. I'm sure this has been talked over a hundred times, I just can't express how impressive this hogs shield was!

Welcome to traditional bowhunting partner! Killed a number of hogs w/o problem using 2-blade razor sharp bh's on 600+ grain arrows. Look in the archives under "RC" (his handle) who's pretty much the hog king killer around here.

Heavy arrow, razor sharp cut on contact head = very dead hog. Light arrows are not the answer to tough animals.

You Mean like THIS One? (http://www.tradgang.com/videos/tg/hog1.wmv)
Also, like this hog, sometimes quartering away wont miss the shield....the shield can go clear back to the end of the rib cage....again, like this hog.

Terry has provided much info regarding hogs as seen now and many times in the past.
My eyes have been firmly focused on what I would need to do in order to have confidence.
The hog's guard is amazing.

should have brought your bow and tested it

I've seen them at about 1 1/2" and have punched both sides with a WW broadhead and a heavy arrow.
The shield is more apt to stop a bullet then a sharp broadhead. Kinda like a kevlar bulletproof vest.
This is where you really need to follow Dr. Ashby's advice on broadheads and arrows.

he was just like that terry. i've taken alot of them but that was the first time i had seen one like that. we talked about putting an arrow in him, but we are doing a full body mount on him for the taxidermy shop and didn't want any holes in the side. im shooting a 58lb longbow with pretty good weight arrows. cant wait to stick one with it. when i was skinning him i took note of the coverage and the thinnest area was in the armpit behind the elbow. he was just a big nasty brute.

My largest 2 hogs were passed through with a 580 and a 630 arrows and FOUR BLADE Zwickeys.
My 3rd largest was a WIDE 2 blade riding on a 610 grain arrow.
