My name has come up on John's list for a new Griffin Longbow.
I am going to be ordering a 64" Left Handed Bow 45#@28" with an I-Beam Riser.
As far as wood choices I am leaning towards Walnut and Maple but am really having a hard time deciding.
Could you guys who own Griffins or Shrews please post some pictures of your bows with descriptions of the woods used?
Thanks

Cmon' guys, where are the photos of the shrews and griffins? I would love to see these photos as well and I know they are out there as long as the wait is for them. I will hopefully be ordering in the summer so I too would love to see them! Tenbrook, how long did you wait on the list? JWilliam, that is one fine looking CH. I love zebrawood, I have a thunderstick with zebra and my sons Maddog we just ordered him will have zebrawood.

I have an all kingwood 64" with natural bamboo cores.I have had 6-7 griffins. This is the nicest one i have had.Built in 2010.It does not have an I beam. But if it did it would be very strong/stiff riser and add some mass weight with a black Phonolic or micarta I beam.Sorry I cant post pics. Its a knockout!
-
I ordered one in May of 2008 called again in 2009 to check up and have still not heard back! Could you pm me when you ordered yours! I think I may have been forgotten!
-
3-4 years wait for me. Be patient I'm sure he has not forgotten anyone.
Thanks for the pictures...keep em' coming!

Will you have this beauty of a bow at Kalmazoo 2012?
-
Here is another shrew safari that I got recently. Hate to admit it, but I like the veneers on the one Ron posted better.

Ron~ Do you have any photos of Shrews in black/white, dalmation, or striped ebony? Don't think I have ever seen that combo on a CH or Lil' Favorite? Please post if you do!!
-
im lost here.. so a griffin and shrew by Ron are the same bow? learn me fellas.. :help:
-
Some similarites, but no. Griffins are made by a bowyer that used to build the shrew bows for Ron. Gregg Coffey makes the shrew bows now. Both great bows and bowyers.
-
Don,
You won't find and B&W Ebony Shrews.....yet. There were pictures posted a couple weeks ago of one with Macasser Ebony. Posted by Skipmaster1.

Thanks. If you can't shoot straight, you ought to at least look good doing it, lol.

I am not capable of doing my bow any justice via pictures.
Curly Maple. Dark wood riser (not sure what) black glass on belly.

You sure that isn't a phenolic riser? Nice looking bow.
-
I see you have already picked out your woods, but I wanted to show off my bow. :D
I don't know for sure what the veneers are but they are very striking. The riser looks to be ebony and curly maple.

I received my griffin yesterday ,What a pleasant surprise /Koa / Bloodwood/Bamboo / All well put together by a very good artist.
The wood Koa almost looks like it's transparent when you look at the bow it looks like you're looking through the wood. it's really great looking. I also have to admit, I have done photography professionally for over 20 years. and I can not do justice to this wood.
but the other great surprise from John is how well he packages his bows for shipping. He literally builds a crate around the bow. and then it is put into the cardboard box and shipped. you could drive a truck over it !
it just goes to show how John really takes to heart the artistry and the love for his craft
Thanks John
Carl

Nope, not sure at all! It certainly has the weight of phenolic.
as you can see in the one picture it looks like there is a grain to it. Does phenolic have grain?
It is a nice looking bow, much nicer than my pictures lead on. I have yet to see an "ugly" McCullough bow.
-
If it's not phenolic, I can't imagine it's anything other than ebony. That being said, I could always add this to the long list of things thst I've been wrong about. Couldn't see the grain, but I'm looking on my cell phone.
-
Might be Micarta. It has grain to it and is heavy but cant tell for sure from the pic.
-
A few pics. John says he'll only do a bowbolt in phenolic

Well that settles it, it's phenolic.
My buddy says they sometimes layer phenolic with cloth and that's what is probably giving the grain like appearance.
I still like it!
Great photos everyone.
-
Some Bowyers call it Phenolic, some call it Linen Micarta. Hope this helps.
"Phenolic resins are found in myriad industrial products. Phenolic laminates are made by impregnating one or more layers of a base material such as paper, fiberglass or cotton with phenolic resin and laminating the resin-saturated base material under heat and pressure."
Charlie, this process would give you the "grain" you're seeing in the riser. I have a Toelke Bowbolt and you can really see it in that riser.
-
im going to own one someday, i really love the way the look. grips look like they would feel very natural. and im sure without shooting one they are ggreat all the way around.
-
Carl, would you please post some pics of your Griffin? John called & is starting mine this month or next!!
-
I picked one up here last month with Pecan - really pretty.
Perhaps someone has the pics, as I can't find the ad.
-
I have several and my 11 year old has one for his first hunting bow. I would spend whatever I had to on his 1st bow but chose a griffin, that should speak for their quality. I will post some pics of mine when I get home. Pardon me if my new one "shakira" is covered in bubbly blood.
-
Nice! Talking about it even before the Solana thread. Can't wait, and an early congrats.
-
You could only own a Griffin and have one of the finest longbow weapons known to man. They have good speed, one of the best grips in the business, quiet, stable and accurate.
Don't tell my wife I said I only need my Griffin.

IZZY, naming your bow "SHAKIRA" wouldn't have anything to do with the CURVES she has does it? And i love that Spalted maple Griffin you have!

buckster
I will post some photo. when I can get it in good daylight.

Cant wait, thanks Carl!

Greatbrown, why yes that is exactly one of the reasons. They also share blondness, flexible limbs, look delicious in black leather and both give me goose bumps when I look at em.
-
That is one hot bow for sure! And she looks good with that blood red rouge on her, buddy!

One thing is for sure.
Shakira is one hot momma. I will leave it to you guys to decide whether I am talking about Izzy's bow or not.
Noah's bow is a looker as well Izzy. You will have to let us know what he names it.

-
Those are so fine Griffins Izzy!! Including the Sam Adams, but the one of you & your son is TOPS!
-
Thanks Buckster, I love that pic. Hes my "Pardner".
-
Some very beautiful bows for sure, I might be seeing one in my future, ya never know.
Izzy, that one with the Zebra rest is absolutely magnificent, and so is the one leaning against the tree, and so is the green one, tell you the truth, I wouldn't be able to make up my mind if I ever had to choose, and I know you can shoot them as good as they look.
Your son looks thrilled and very happy.
-
Ken , Izzy's son is already outshouting Izzy with his bow. :smileystooges:
-
Charlie, he outdoes me in everything but boy do I love to get outdone by him. If that bear bone works for you youll know what I mean. Just remember to follow the instructions or it wont work.
-
Charlie,
It is always most rewarding for the teacher, when the student out does the him!
P.S. You see, I wrote the above before seeing Izzy's response.
-
Izzy you will have to find it for me and bring itto the meeting in January.
Dont forget to bring the user manual. :readit:
Ken, I bet you are right. I hope to find out someday.
Any more griffin pics :archer2:

3-4 year wait sounds a little harsh but i waited 3 yrs 8 months for a bow and it was woth the wait. I was suppose to have had it in 7 months so that aggraveted me a little.

So how does the 59'er shoot compared to John's regular design?
-
I love my griffin and am on the list for a two piece. My first one came to me used. If a bowbolt lefty comes on sale used I would snatch it up in a heart beat.
