My brother Mark took a nice doe with an obsidian stone head. We have not had any snow here to speak of, and the deer movement has been kind of slow lately. There was no real push to feed like we typically see this time of year. He was quite pleased to get this deer with a self-bow. Mark waited for her to pass, before taking the quartering away shot. The head cut the edge of a rib longitudinally before stopping against the far shoulder. It ran about a hundred yards. During flight, the arrow was pulled/pushed back out and hung up on the rib cage. The laminated birch arrow broke at the thin notch required to secure the thick stone head. With the head stuck behind the hide, the arrow flopped about attached only to the unraveled sinew as the deer bound through the underbrush. This is the third or forth animal including a huge bison and whitetail buck that Mark has taken with a stone head. Mike

Congratulations to Mark and Nice bow with the snake backing!
Mike,
We really got to fix your Avatar pic with your Nov.4th and 5th pic...I say anyone that takes a double in two day's like you did and with those majestic sized Antlers deserve a extra avatar! :D

Mark used a 55# bow and the total arrow weight was about 850gr. The head weighed about 190gr and was much thicker than the flint heads he usually uses. Mark said it hit with a loud thud, like shooting an old rotten stump. I saw the head and was kind of skeptical since the edges were not tappered out as fine as the flint heads I've seen him use, but it got the job done and left a big hole like a Snuffer. Mike

Mike,
That head is just Tuffer then a Snuffer! :jumper: I better get busy running cause I just hit a hornet's nest...
-
To cool!
-
Keefer- We are used to bee stings around here. Ha ha ha! Even with an 850 gr arrow, that bow still had enough handshock to shake his teeth. I think Mark will have to wait a month before he can shoot a bow again. Good thing the deer season is over now. Ha!
-
Mike,
He is just having "Aftershocks"! Oh and tell Mark to let his hair grow like a string puff (like that one pic you sent me a few years ago) and that will dampen the tremmer's from the release! :biglaugh:
-
Congratulations on a great accomplishment.
-
Thats pretty cool. It is not leagal to hunt with stone here and I have thought about it for Texas, this just adds a little more encouragment.
-
Very Nice!
-
Congrats to Mark! Taking a deer with my selfbow and stone pointed arrow is on my bucket list.

:notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: Nuff said. Congrats !!!
-
FerretWYO- A stone head is legal here in Illinois as long as it is at least 7/8 inches wide and is non-barbed. The head that Mark used on the doe was 1-1/4".
-
Nice job! The doe my son took with his hand chipped head had a huge hole in it also. He has stopped using anything but his own now. He's actually doing a class on knapping beginning Jan 28th at a local survival school. Tell Mark congrats for me!
-
Mike, Tell Mark congrats!
What a fine animal!
-
Congrats to Mark! Talk about "traditional" that harvest defines it well.
-
Congratulations!! Why so much handshock in the bow?? My selfbow is dead in the hand with a 600gr arrow. It's a 60" 65@28. Is it the design of the bow?
-
That's awesome.
-
Now THAT'S Trad!!!
-
The bow is old and probably out of tiller. Not sure what other factors play into it, but the hand-shock is very noticable. I think he got the bow from Gene Wensel....hhhmmmm.

Awesome stuff!

Did Mark hurt his shoulder? That is an awful puny bow for him...
Is he gracing us with his presence at Kzoo?
Also, that was an EXCELLENT article he wrote for the newest issue of Big Buck magazine
-
Nice, Congratulations, Mark. Thanks for posting, Mike.
-
Steve-He did not hurt his shoulder, he just wanted to use a self-bow with the heavy stone point arrow. His other bow he shot the buck and the bison with was a 75# laminated Bush Bow by Great Northern. Mark should be at K-zoo on Sunday.
