Well last weekend my 9 year old and I went to the cabin in KY to do a little shed hunting, scouting deer for next year and hopefully, bushytail killn'. The weather was fair to partly crappy. The squirels gave us the slip but we had a good time, cooked some elk steaks over an open fire and just slung some arras at stumps.

We took along our reading material, he a "kindle" thingy with a book called "39 Clues" and me a worn out copy of Massey's "A Thousand Campfires"

While there I brought along Mr. Rob's wood arra idea, using sharpies for stain, and with some help from my boy, we turked out some ammo for the stumps.

Back home that Sunday I told him that should we get some nice days, those bushytails would come out of the woodwork at home. So this morning a light mist was fallin' and we gave it a go. He made it about an hour and decided a cup of hot chocolate was a alot more fun than getting soaked with his old man. I couldn't blame him, but I stayed anyway...

The light rain stopped and the woods were so quiet. A stalker's dream! Now I don't know about you, but I don't want to be in the woods when it's poring rain, but I SURE want to be there when the rain stops. It's like a switch is flipped, and the animals come out of the woodwork ;)
So with all the time in the world, good soft carpet under my feet, and an open season on bushytails I got to huntin'. The first few stalks were perfect, but the shots were not. Finally I caught one looking the other way on the ground and let him have it. Man they are tough critters...but I picked up the boar squirrel and made my way into a stand of giant oaks on my place.
The action was hot and heavy, I had at least 10 shots, lost one of my 3 fletched flu-flus (how does that happen?), and limped back home with one good arra, one busted arra, and one MIA. I couldn't bring myself to bust up my purty woodies, so I put Steadman's arras to work he had sent me awhile back.
Oh yea, I wasn't empty handed...

Had a great time chasin' these critters and can't wait to make some bushytail dumplins' for the family. When I got back home my son met me at the door wide-eyed. I said "How was that chocolate?"...I got slugged in the arm and hugged, told "good job" and "I am stayin' next time!" For a wet old man that sounded pretty good.

Big thanks to Steadman for the arras, Mr Chad Holm for the fine bow, Ace Blunts for the business end, and God for allowing me to live in a place where a man can roam with a longbow and just relax.

Looks like you are up and at 'em bud, glad you are all healed up. What a awesome time for the two of you there at the cabin. Spend as much time there with him as you can, the both of you will never forget those times. Of all the things we can give our kids the best and the one they will treasure the most is our time. Makes me think back to the time when my Mason was 9. Hard to believe but he will turn 16 in March and I am already having seperation anxiety ! Good on the both of you ! :campfire:

Thanks Mike, I always enjoy small game pictures and stories. I think a lot of people who only hunt big game really miss out on some good times. We have a lot of grey squirrels here in eastern Oklahoma but even with the squirrel dog, I don't think I have ever taken three in one day. Very good shooting!!!!
