Don Wilson asked me to get this started...so hear goes. This was so much fun last year, we decided to see if we could do it again....and so we did...
This hunt took place at Northeast Alabama Hunting Preserve and many thanks to Jeff Ferguson for donating the hunt for the winning bidder. :wavey:
Some of these pics will show as many as 3 different arrows that hit a single bird....so hang in there....Lloyd is editing all the pics for us also...and he has a real job and family as well....so bear with us.....

This was a great hunt and a big THANK YOU to John...Americanhunter7...for buying this hunt. John and Mudd are both great guys who have become friends in this "way to short" weekend. They are both welcome in our home anytime.
Here is a couple of pics to get started and a lot more will be added tonight. This hunt was about as much fun as a man can have with his clothes on...lol
I know a few pictures I'm looking forward to seeing. Just seeing large wheeled jeeps buried to the chassis is a hoot.
How Skyler and Larry walked away from that without even getting their boots muddy is still a mystery to me...lol
God bless,Mudd
Thanks to you and your family Don! There are no better hosts or hawg cookers.
-
Keep them coming!
-
Excellent! Been looking forward to this after hearing some about it from you guys :campfire:
-
I had Doug Johnson and Jason Mauldin in tow...Doug came last year and Jason just said it sounded to good to be true so he just had to come this year and find out for himself...and boy did he, real quick....
-
After meeting up as Don's place with Larry, Don, Skyler, Conan, Mudd, and John....we shared breakfast cooked my our lovely hostess Tammy.
I asked Tammy where Chloe was, and Tammy's reply was...."We are going to let her sleep". Too funny!!! Chloe is a barrel of monkeys....and what a doll. I'd deal with her later. :D
Don't want to get the cart before the horse, and again, Lloyd is traveling, so it will take probably more than a week to get all the pics from him....but I'll get to the start of the hunt. If someone has pre hunt pics....post away...
Like I said, Jason found out real quick.... As he began to ask questions on the way I told him the same thing I told Doug the year before....don't think about anything, just look at the bird, swing, draw, and release....and wouldn't ya know it....here's the results of his 1st shot of the morning....Lloyd caught not only the falling rooster, but the big grin of amazement on Jason's face....
It happened so fast, as you can see, John on the right didn't even get a shot off. What a way to start a morning on the 1st pheasant!!!
-
What an awesome picture!! Capturing a moment like that is priceless stuff!!
-
AWESOME  Cant wait for more pics :archer2:

Where else but Tradgang are you going to get a pictorial tag-a-long and story telling extraordinaire. Looking forward to the rest. :campfire:

Here's a random shot.....but hold on for the next series!!!!

-
Cool!
-
I shot 'Best Friend' for the 1st half of the hunt, the bow Rob DiStefano gave me, a MOHAWK - 64" 62# longbow,..... that bow is in the previous pic and several to follow....I later traded out for another bow I needed to christen, my Lost Creek NAT a shorter bow, 56" dipped by Big Jim in a predator pattern.
-
This next series of pics is very special to me....and I'll have all 3 framed in sequence in the same frame soon hanging in my office...
This rooster didn't stand a chance...as you can see, there is an arrow already falling in front of Doug(Larry's - 1st to shoot), one that also hit the bird that is going almost straight up(Doug's - 3nd to shoot), and one that is in the bird(mine - 2nd to shoot).
Larry, Doug and I tripled on this pheasant....it don't get any better than this folks!!!

Like Terry said, this was an awesome hunt!! We had a great weekend and made some great new friends. John and Mudd pulled in at about 9:30 Saturday morning, and we headed to Big Daddy's Outdoors, where dad works, to hang out and buy some hunting licenses. We went outside and shot a bit, then went and played with this years "new and improved" pheasant point.
After being joined by Larry, we headed to get some lunch and do a little shoping at the Unclaimed Baggage Center, then went over to my aunt and uncles house for a monthly friend/family cookout. My uncle used to be really into rock crawling, and when we got to their house, Larry started eyeing his jacked up Jeep Wrangler. My Uncle, Sammy, said "take her for a ride Larry!" ...So Larry and I jumped in and started riding through the fields and around the pond. We came to a narrow, muddy spot at the end of the pond. Larry got a run-and-go...amd this was the result...

Like Skyler said, every month we have a Family /extended family cookout with a different Theme every month. John and Mudd had perfect timing. This month Sammy and I smoked 2 hogs for 10 hours and you really need "smell-o-vision" for them....there were FINE! Sorry Guys but he can't type at the moment. Sky went to a Softball game...a Ladies softball game... to see Baylee play... :bigsmyl:

The awesome bow shots were made by folks like Skyler Wilson, Terry Green, John Reichenbacker,Jason,Doug and Larry.
I was a novice by any comparison.
I think Skyler got at least 5.
There were several birds that got hit by more than one shooters arrow.
At least a couple of arrows were taken out by other arrows seeking out the same target...lol
Pheasants aren't easy to hit and even harder to kill.
God bless,Mudd
-
Yeah....I saw Doug just hammer one, and I saw my arrow hit and heard a SNAP-THUMP and I thought I'd took out a wing, but I took out Doug's arrow that was in the bird....point end went one way, and fletched end went another.

The little breast on the plate with a little mangle in the center was a young rooster that I shot. No mistaking as he was straight overhead and I shot him with a head like the one on the left in this pic.....
This rooster got up and changed course and flew right over me while I was out on the right wing of all the shooters and the shot took him out ASAP, and he fell like a brick.....
I was looking for him while we were dressing the birds and I made sure I took him home....That gash just soaked up a little more marinade.....YUM!!!

looks like a great hunt and trip. also what a mean lookin bird head. lets get some details
-
Sorry bout that guys :) I did have a good day shooting. I think a little of the mojo rubbed off of the bow I was shooting. This month was mine and Dad's month to shoot and hunt with Miss Faith, and she performed quite well! I ended up killing five pheasants, a few of them were shots that I dont know how I made! Thinks were pretty fast and furious, so I don't remember a lot of the details. Here are some pics!

Ok...I'm gonna start how this trip began for me.
Friday Morning (March 9th)
5:45 A.M.
I started this trip off with the intention of leaving early Friday morning to go and pick up Mudd in Missouri and maybe hang out and do a little shooting, then head south to the great state of Alabama. As things would have it I didn't get as early a start as I had hoped for.
9:20 A.M.
Packed up, Nephew to school, paycheck in the bank and bills paid!!! Whew, NOW I can leave for Missouri...I was filling up with gas to head to Mudd's when the phone rang and to my surprise it was Mudd. Mudd offered to drive an hour and a half closer to me to save some time, and me some gas, so I agreed to meet him at a different location. I ended my conversation and the first trip to get Mudd was underway....
3:30 P.M.
Arrived in Missouri to pick up Mudd....I had a great drive into Missouri and was anticipating having a wonderful traveling companion and fellow TG'er in tow for what was looking to be a fantastic few days of hunting with and meeting fellow TG members. Mudd and I got loaded up and headed south.
We stopped off in Kentucky, for dinner, of all places Kentucky Fried Chicken. Mudd and I had several tries and misses for a Cracker Barrel. Mudd and I had dinner, made a few calls and then continued south. I called Larry Surtees and told him we were close to where he recently moved and he was kind enough to offer for us to stay at his residence for the night and then travel together to Alabama in the morning. Mudd and I respectfully and reluctantly declined the offer and decided instead to continue to drive south, due to us being a little farther away from Larry than I had originally thought. (Larry's hospitality, along with our hosts in Alabama WILL get talked about some more as this progresses).
11:30 P.M.
Finally!!! After about 14 hours of being on the road we stopped for the night in Monteagle, Tennessee, only about an hour away from our destination in Alabama. Mudd and I hunkered down for the night and a few hours of sleep before getting to meet some of the GREATEST people I am now privileged to know.
I know this sounds boring right now, but I promise it'll be worth it! I'm having fun typing this just becuase I'm getting to remember the trip with Mudd, and getting to know him and all of the other fine folks I met during this trip. For all who haven't met him in person yet all I can say is He IS everything and MORE of what people think of him in the TG community. Mudd is a very generous, and kind man. I had and hope to have many more hunts with him in the future.
That's all for now....I'll type a little more about Saturday's festivities, and maybe post the few pics I have as soon as I get another chance. One of the stories has been told a little, but not the WHOLE story....
-
Looks like fun.
-
Thanks John!
I'll added something about our stop at KFC.
It wasn't as crowded as Cracker Barrel but it sure as heck wasn't empty either. (Folks in Ky apparently don't cook on Friday night)
I had at least one item listed in the TGMM karma giveaway that needed to have a winners name drawn so John did me the honor of drawing out that name from my hat and posting it for me.
I can't use the tiny little computer in my smart phone...lol
Thanks for that as well as a great trip John.
God bless,Mudd
PS: I got the prize along with some "surprises" mailed out to the winner.

Cool pics and looks like you guys had a great time!!!

Alright I'm gonna post some more about this...
Saturday (March 10th)
6:45 A.M.
Got an early start from Monteagle, TN. Checked out of the room, had a little breakfast with Mudd. Breakfast was good but Mudd was a little shall we say, "twitchy". I asked Mudd if everything was okay and he said he was felling fine, but he REALLY wanted to get outside and shoot a little. I think he was going through shooter's withdraw, from not having a chance to shoot his GORGEOUS Sunset Hill bow ANY since we had left Missouri. I assured Mudd we would be in Alabama soon and be shooting very soon with some wonderful fellow Traganger's.
7:57 A.M.
On the road and headed south!!! Yippie, only about an hour from our final destination of Flat Rock, Alabama and home to some of the finest people I've ever met. As we traveled down the mountain from Tennessee and into Alabama I noticed there was a place just inside Alabama with a large open field and a store which looked promising for shooting some bows. I told Mudd we should stop in and see if we could go out back and shoot some. Little did I know that when we drove past the location, we would be coming back very soon and with a very special young man as our driver.
9:12 A.M.
I missed a call on my cell phone and saw that it was from Skyler Wilson....I returned his call and he asked where I was at. I told him I was only about 7-10 minutes from pulling into his driveway. I'll be honest, I felt kinda bad because when I had talked with Don and Sklyer earlier in the week I hadn't planned to be as far along as Mudd and I were and as early as we were. Skyler gave me a few more specifics to get to our final destination and within minutes Mudd and I were at the Wilson's.
I have to say from what I've read here about the Wilson's is totally and without a doubt TRUE. The entire family is truly in a class above and beyond, enough said! Skyler introduced himself and his friend Zach, and we talked for a while before loading up to head back to the store we'd passed on the way into Alabama.
A short trip back from where we came through originally and we were shaking hands and meeting Don Wilson (DW). I again was not disappointed with the friendliness and kindness shown to both myself and Mudd. Don was extremely busy during the time we were at the store, but the shooting was about to being. Don told Skyler to take us out back and do some shooting....So that's EXACTLY what we did.......
Gotta stop for a little bit, I'm at work and trying to type and work at the same time. Gotta run but be back with a little more soon.
-
You're doing a fine job John... keep at it and thank you!
God bless,Mudd
PS: I don't think we had to turn on the radio during our trip..please correct me if I am misremembering John.
-
Nope..... You are remembering correctly Mudd, not a bit of radio due to the subject matter and company in the car. Folks if you ever need to have someone to go on a hunt with I'd highly recommend Mudd as a traveling companion. This St. Jude's Pheasant Hunt was well worth the bid and went to a GREAT cause. I'll try and get some more posted about Saturday and some of the antics that took place during the later part of the day and into the evening.

AWESOME stuff guys!

This one shot was just too cool - I just had to posterize it in photoshop, I could feel the arrow flying and hitting, the whole emotion of that shot, hope you guys don't mind :)
Would make an awesome window decal ;)

I want to thank everyone for making this hunt possible.....TradGang, Terry, Doug, Rob and all the participating TG members and Moderators in the ST. JUDES Auction, John (Americanhunter7) for buying the hunt and making a wonderful Donation to ST. Judes.
A special THX to Jeff Ferguson at Northeast Alabama Hunting Preserve. Jeff has great flying birds, guides and dogs. We have hunted with him 4 times and he understands and knows what it takes to sucessfully cater to Traditional Bowhunters....call him at 256-717-8595.

AND for the record, the day of the hunt, my phone says we walked 5.9 miles and took 12,252 steps. It is a very challenging hunt but more fun than you can imagine!

Great hunt and some pretty amazing shooting! Thanks for the ride...tippit

Great thread, surreal photography & an awesome trip to consider.. thumbs up..
-
i really wanted to be there. huh what a fun.
btw, how many arrows have your lost guys?
curiocity: is it safe to shoot an arrow like this while everybody around? :)
-
inksoup,
This hunt WAS an absolute BLAST!!! As far as arrows lost....I think there were two arrows that weren't lost, but weren't usable after what happened to them. I'll let Terry and Mudd tell those stories. As far as safety in the hunting group we usually could get set up in a horseshoe type setup around where the dogs were pointing at birds and when the bird flushed everyone had an opportunity to shoot safely....BUT you had to be super quick on the draw... More to come I promise.
-
I have to take the blame for at least one broken arrow as my arrow connected with someone's carbon shattering it.
I guess karma made sure to even up the score because on the very next bird my quail "mojo'ed" arrow was tracking on it's way toward the quarry when it was cut into.
I found the end with the flu-flu's but my talon point was lost forever.
I will say that I never once felt we had any issues with safety nor any lack of opportunities for getting shots.
Twice I either waited to take my shot or just never took it for safety concerns.
The 1st time I was on the backside of a brush line when a quail got up and was flying straight at me. That would have made for a great shot except I knew there were hunters in that direction. I followed the bird past me before I made my shot. My arrow just skimmed the belly of that bird. If I had connected on that one I'm sure folks for at least one county away would have heard me celebrating...lol
The second time was on one of the last birds( a runner). It broke out of the tall grass running from my right to left. A perfect opportunity for a "running pig" shot but just as I hit anchor out of my peripheral vision I caught sight of one of the dogs streaking toward the bird with every ounce of strength he could muster. I knew there was a pretty good chance I might just as easily hit the dog as the bird so thus ended that shot for me.
Overall... a great hunt with a group of awesome guys.
If there was any issue at all with my well being it was that I forgot to bring water as did a few others.
I was dehydrated by the end of the hunt.
God bless,Mudd

Thanks again to Don, Skyler, Terry, and of course Lloyd for the pics of the hunt. I have to say Lloyd is a GREAT photographer, and a fine southern gentleman. I had the pleasure a few times to talk with Lloyd while on the hunt and he's a really nice fella. I'll try and get in the story about Saturday afternoon and evening's events, but alas, I have to finish up a report at work so it'll be a little later.

I'm suppose to get all the images in the original format(large)....so if there's any pic or pics someone wants in the larger version just let me know and I'll get it to ya...

Thanks for the pictures guys!

Wow, great pictures, shooting and stories. Thanks for taking us along.
And, look at all that Pheasant Kiev in the making (one of my favorite recipes for pheasant). Take the breasts off in one piece and stuff it with butter and herbs. Coat in eggwash and bread crumbs, deep fry for a few minutes till golden brown and then to the oven for 20 minutes. Before all that take the legs and carcass and make a stock that you then make into a gravy to pour over the top of pheasant and seasoned rice when done. Yum. :campfire:
