Yesterday afternoon my wife wanted us to go outside and start painting the front porch, I need some brownie points for another excursion that I'm planning so I happily agreed.
About an hour before dark I hear a turkey start gobbling. I have lived here 30 years and this is the first turkey I have ever heard during turkey season here at the house. I look at my wife and say I have to go to the store and get my turkey tags so off I go!
I went to the woods this morning, it was cloudy and overcast
I hear a bird gobble and he is not on my property
I get ready to go back home and I hear another bird gobble, he is in the middle of my property :D
I sneak into the woods, I get about 75 yards from him. I can tell he is still in the tree. I get settled with a big tree between us at about 10 yards and I get on my knees against another big tree. I yelp on my slate and he gobbles, I wait about 5 minutes and do it again and he gobbles. I set the slate down and get ready cause he knows where I am :D
Less than a minute later, I see him glide out of the tree and he hits the ground at about 50 yards. My heart is PUMPING! He gets to about 15 yards and is 5' from going behind my "draw" tree and he spots me, putts and walks off! What a freaking rush! I admire anyone that can kill one of these birds without a blind!!!! I could have shot him with my shotgun without a problem but what fun would that be?
I almost steped on a hen at my driveway, on the way walking back to the house....
I have to go finish painting the porch, maybe I'll hear another one!

No fair hunting by the bird feeders or taping an arrow to the front bumper before you drive down the driveway! :bigsmyl: Just being able to hear those birds that close after not having them around is neat. Good luck. Do you have any "SPECIAL" catch-and-release arrows? :p :D

Sounds pretty cool to me having them right close to the house. You'll get 'em!

Getting them in close is a rush!

When we finally admit that we want something more than just blasting one with the shotgun, we are on our way to the ultimate thrill.
You'll make it happen...I got my first this year, and it is worth the wait. It was on my own property too...that's just a great bonus.

Turkeys are now showing up in the Denver Tech Center. Wonder how long before we start getting urban permits? :goldtooth:

Thanks for sharing. Im going for the first time with a bow on Monday. I have killed a bunch with a shotgun I cant wait to take one with the stick and string.

Well, we had a storm come in yesterday afternoon. I did not hear any gobbles. It's raining this morning so hopefully he will stick around until next weekend and I'll try it again.
I think that next time I will get behind the tree.

That sure is cool to have turkeys right out the back door. Hopefully they stick around. That sure is the case here in WI. We never had them around the house until about 5 years ago. Now I can hear them just about any morning that I step out on the deck.
Get that painting finished and get out in the woods!

How cool is this?.....Way!!....I'm saying....
Awesome!!
God bless,Mudd

Keep after them! The hunter that is successful is usually the one that goes out the most.

That is an awesome description of what it can be like. Having a big gobbler close to you with nothing but a stickbow and no blind is about as electric as any hunting situation can be imho.
I think not having a decoy sends the odds of getting busted way up since they are looking for that hen so hard and haven't located her yet.
Good luck....althought getting one or not, you've already experienced the best part for sure!

I'd bet there was a cigar somewhere in the mix! d;^)

 Keep after 'em!

Pat, I took your avise! I was just sitting on the porch admiring my paint work, smoking a cigar and sure enough, Gobble Gobble! He's Baaacckk!!! :bigsmyl:
I hope he stays around until next Saturday! I'll set up my blind and put out my hen decoy for him.
It is pretty cool to sit outside and here him gobble.
