Title: laclair bowie
Post by: sledge on June 19, 2012, 10:20:00 PM
i've had mine a week.  it is a very good knife.

i have rolled the edge on a $1000 bowie chopping through a doug fir 4×4.  the maker told me it wasn't designed for that.

been chopping cedar and mesquite here on the ranch.

i am a knife man, a 30 year knife man, and i have never seen a knife hold an edge after chopping mesquite like this 1.

btw, ron sells the knife.  the imprint on the FORGED blade, and yes, that DOES matter, is cl matteo.

mr matteo, you make a hell of a knife.

this ain't no art knife.  it is adequately finished, but i did round a few corners, both on stag and steel.

but it cost $225.  $240 delivered.  maybe the best working blade i've ever owned.

an incredible bargain.

Ron has some great knives; I have had my eye on couple. The Bowie is very impressive.

I've said it many times here on Tradgang, Ron knows and loves knives almost as much as he does bows.  All the products I've ever got from Ron are top notch and his craftsman Knives/hawks-Matteo, Arrows-Jalon, leather-Vincent, wool-Asbell and bows-Coffey are all at the top of their respective crafts. But as you've mentioned above, the best part is the price is fair for the quality that you're getting on all the products.

The only problem I've got with the above is that many times I want to have a phone conversation with my retired buddy and he's too darned busy packaging orders and going to the post office.         I guess he doesn't know he's supposed to slow down when he reaches middle age.     ;)

Sledge - I have the same knife. I agree with you 100%. It looks like a Mountain Man show piece, but I use mine hard, building blinds....splitting up kindling. I use it all the time.

regarding "packaging orders"...

it took me a solid 15 minutes with my sharp dozier to get to the knife!

that sucker was sure-enough packaged!

i just ordered the other bowie ron has in stock.

2 is 1, 1 is none. (clint smith.  thunder ranch)

if you need it, you need a spare.

Ok.  Order placed on LaClair bowie.  Waiting on Mr. Matteo to return from vacation (much needed, I'm sure).

I'm stoked!  Can't have too many knives, bows, handguns, side x side shotguns, .... - you get my drift:)!

I finally ordered the Trapper's Companion. The bowie will probably be next.

bad day for me on this front...

a very close friend admired my 2 bowies a couple of weeks ago, so i gave him 1.

today, while hog hunting, the other slipped from beneath my belt.

i know about where i lost it, within 2811 acres.

bummero grande.

now, none is none.

thanks, y'all.

oh, yeah, i looked.

and i made it sound more hopeless than it is.

the ranch is 2811 acres.  i didn't cover all of them, by any means.

my plan is to spend at least 1 hour a day looking for it until i find it.  and i probably will.

just like arrows.  i have 2 "misplaced" in the woods right now.

i'll likely find them too.

Yes the shrew hawk and bowie look like awesome pieces...I had intended to get the hawk but after reading that the poll was not hardened, opted for a different blacksmith to make me one.  I still may get one, but the last hawk I had that did not have a hardened poll ended up with way too many dimples after pounding in my tent stakes.

not a sheath problem.  i made a kydex sheath with an antler frog, and it's great.

i was carrying it under an adjustment strap on my buttpack, for the 1st, and last, time.

sure appreciate y'all, though.

and no, i didn't sleep much.  waiting for daylight.

got to thinking overnight that for that big knife to hit the ground without me noticing, it had to be in a rough patch.

went to the thickest patch i hunted through.

sure enough!

Ordered the shoulder rig for mine from Ron.  Looking forward to receiving knife and rig so that I can try it out!

rcorbitt-

you're gonna love it.  i've spent 4 times as much, but never, ever owned a better blade.

roger-

your concern was most welcome, and very kindly received.

y'all, along with ray, steeled my resolve to find it.

pretty good bunch hereabouts...

thanks.

We've got a new version of the LaClair Bowie. This is the "Fighter", it will have a double guard instead of a single guard. The Classic Bowie will still be available. The Fighter isn't on the web site yet but I'm taking orders for it.
