I figured I would post this hunt early enough for everyone to see it and request time off work as needed. Time for year 6 of this event, let's break the drought! So close to so many bucks and does. Lets get it "done" this year!
Here are some pictures from the past years;
One of the many ponds;

*************************************************
DATES:
November 3rd -11th. I will be setting up on Friday night the 2nd and breaking camp on Sunday evening the 11th. That means we will have Saturday morning to Sunday evening or afternoon to hunt.
I do have to skip out Wednesday night to work on Thursday and Friday, but will be back in camp Friday Night. I can't get out of being at work those 2 days.
*************************************************
LOCATION:
Go to the site listed below for the map of the AEP area. Look for Campground K off of SR 83 and T13. It is surrounded by public hunting with no reservation required.
Here is the link to the map;
http://www.aep.com/environmental/recreation/recland/pdf/ReCLandMap.pdf
This is a free hunt on public land. You just have to sign in when you get there. We will try to have some spots staked out, but it does get busy at that camp site these days. If there isn't enough room at K we will camp in area A. There will be a sign posted and someone will go up on the hill for a cell signal to post on this thread to confirm our camp site.
*************************************************
PERMIT:
You will need to download, print and sign your free permit to be legal. You need to keep this with you while hunting. No need to send it in anywhere.
Go to this site for the permit:
http://www.aep.com/environmental/recreation/recland/permit.aspx
*************************************************
FOOD:
This year everyone will bring their own food. Last year, due to rain and mud, a number of people didn't show up. As a result, much food was wasted since we had planned on more people.
***********************************************
FIREWOOD:
It is safe/legal to transport wood from the same counties we are hunting in; Meigs, Guernsey, Noble. You do have to cover the wood during transport.
***********************************************
Shirts: Design and colors are yet to be determined, but will likely be dark olive with white lettering/design. PM me your size and I can let you know the cost for the shirt. I need to have at least 12 shirts ordered from the guy who makes them for me or the cost goes up A LOT!
***********************************************
If you have any questions or comments, post them on here or PM me. Hope to see you all in November!

I would love to join you guys but all my vacation time this year is going towards my elk hunt. Maybe next year
-
No worries. There will be another one next year!
-
I have plans to be there again this year. Maybe the weather will be better. Even though I came in on the tailend of the rain it was dang sure cold.
Troy
-
This sounds fun. Even though I have plenty of private lands to hunt, I might come down and join to try and fill a doe tag and hang out with everyone. I have been there in the past camping (10 years ago) and fishing with friends. I have never hunted it but do they allow stands like climbers to be used as long as they are not permanent?
-
Troy,
It will be good to see you bud. Great job on the seminar at Kalamazoo!
Banshee,
Don't be suprised to see a nice buck or two at close range if you come down. I only went down for this hunt one time where I didn't have a large buck near my stand. As a matter of fact, I was busted twice last year at 14-20 yards by a VERY nice 8 and 10 point buck. 2 more steps and the 8 point would have come home in the back of my truck with me(hopefully).
Climbers are legal. You can even use climbing sticks and a hang on stand as long as it is portable.
Last year was cold and wet. Hopefully this year will just be cold for the beginning of the rut.
A lot of people fish down there due to some LARGE bass. You could bring a pole and a kayak/canoe if you wanted. Not sure if November would be a good time for fishing there.
Anyway, you are welcome to come and sit at the fire with us!
Take care,
Charlie
-
2 shirts for me XL
-
nice to see you posted this. I'll be there and put me in for a xl shirt to please.
-
Are we going to be a the same campground as lastyear? If so, I say we move accross the road. Higher ground over there.
Troy
-
Since it will be in November instead of October, I am hoping Campground K will have enough open spots. If Camp area K should pose any problems, we will camp at A. I think it had the most non-muddy spots open last year. So, the long and short of it is; Camp K for openers and camp A if there is a problem.
Gotcha on the shirts Rob and Jim.
-
Charlie, Thanks for the information it sounds like a lot of fun. I will most definitely try to come down for a day or two for sure. I am only about an hour and a half away. You mentioned that the camp sites usually get filled up at this time, are these more campers than hunters? I was just curious if you are there fighting another 100 hunters for a spot to setup. Also you can sign me up for a XXL shirt and let me know how you would like payment.
Also if I remember correctly there are no motorized vehicles aloud like 4 wheeler or gator correct?
Thx
Larry
-
Banshee,
The Buckeye Trail runs through Camp K and the fishing is good on the ponds at Camp Area K. When we did the Ohio Trad Deer Hunt last year, it was in October and lots of people were still fishing and hiking. Don't worry about finding hunting spots. AEP has 60,000 acres open for hunting. There are a number of places to hunt. If someone is close, just go over the next hill and you will be alone.
This year we are back hunting in the 2nd week of November. There may still be some other hunters there for the weekend, but the week days will find the campgrounds and woods empty of other hunters for the most part.
I did a 2nd hunt there last year with some guys from Vermont during November and Camp K was fine during the week. Pretty much empty in fact.
It's on the weekends that the hikers, fishermen and some weekend hunters show up. Mainly its people just enjoying the outdoors. Since it is 1st come 1st serve, it may be busy and have people there.
I will have Jimmy(BG Hunter) call me when he gets down there to let me know how busy Area
K is and if we can get everyone in there. If not, I am sure Area A will be fine.
As far as 4 wheelers go, they are allowed in some places, but many areas are marked no access. Also, I got your shirt order and will PM you the payment info. I can't post that out on Powwow. It will be a little while on the shirts because I have to get the design put together and make sure there are enough orders.
FYI; You guys always get the shirts at cost. I don't make any money on them. The shirts are just for fun and promoting trad archery!
Thanks,
Charlie

I'm originally from the East and was planning on an WHitetail hunt in Pa. during the rut. How much are Ohio out of State Tags, and are there "hunter Safety" class requirements ? How many hunters typically participate. If welcomed, I'm interested.
-
Normally 10 to 15 guys participate.
Out of state license is $125.
Antlerless tags are allowable during the time of our hunt for $15.
Either sex tags are allowable for this hunt allowing you to take either a buck or a doe on that tag for $25.
You can only take 1 deer per tag.
You can buy a max of 3 antlerless tags and 3 either sex tags. Even if it is an either sex tag, if you have already shot a buck in Ohio, you can only use it on a doe at that point.
A hunter is only allowed 1 buck regardless of how many tags you buy.
If you are legal to hunt in your state, you will be legal here in Ohio. We have no higher requirements beyond other states. An Ohio hunter must take a safety course. If you have done so in your state you should be fine.
Let me know if you are still interested. We should be able to get everyone campsites. Maybe not all together, but close enough. Normally 20-25 people intend to show up and we wind up with 10-15 guys. Last year was a lighter year for attendance since the weather was so horrible. For some reason, people don't like rain?
Thanks,
Charlie

I took Old skool stumping when he came to Arkansas a few years ago. He must have liked the company cause he came back for a hog hunt and a bowfishing trip. He has asked me to come hunt with him for two years now.
This year I arrange to come up for a hunt at his house. Yesterday he called and told me about this particular hunt. If you guys wouldn't mind I'd like to come hunt with you.
-
Charlie,
Put me down for and XL shirt.
Troy
-
Pac,
Rob(Oldskool) and I have hunted squirrels, deer and rabbit together plenty of times. If you are a friend of his you are welcome at my camp fire any time.
Who knows, Maybe you can help me out with hogs in Arkansas someday? :bigsmyl:
Welcome :campfire:
-
Charlie, Thanks for the information. I will give this some serious consideration.
Lu in AZ
-
Squaretop,
Never had an Arizona guy in camp! That would be a cool addition! Do you have any good elk/mule deer stories?
Troy,
Got your shirt order and thanks!
-Charlie
-
Charlie, I have a load of stories ! Unfortunately most have occurred in Pa and Colorado as it's difficult to pull an elk tag in AZ and during the last 5 years the famous Kaibab plateau in AZ has gone to a draw system for archery mulies. I'm excited about this season as it represents my return to traditional archery following 34 years of hunting with a compound. Trad archery is the way to go. Now, the logistics of hunting with you guys is what I have to figure out.
-
This sounds like fun. I'm moving to Toledo in a month and a half so, finding places to hunt is going to be nice. If I can get away from school for a weekend I will try to make the drive down there and join you guys. I'd take a large t-shirt. How much are they?
-
Shane,
PM sent. If you can make it that would be good. Is your move to Toledo permanent?
Squaretop,
Welcome back to trad archery! Hopefully you make it out this Fall. Are you thinking of flying to Ohio?
-Charlie
-
Charlie, I'm thinking P.A. I'll be Elk hunting with some P.A. buddies in Colorado this fall and will give them my Ohio camping gear to take back. That way I just bring my bow and clothes and either rent or borrow a vehicle to meet you guys. My niece lives in Columbus so I might be able to visit there as well.
lu
-
Having your gear in PA would make life easier.
I would like to get out to Colorado for an elk hunt one of these days myself. My understanding is, it is one of the most affordable places to elk hunt.
Are you guys planning to pack meat out on your back or do you have horses for the hunt? Hopefully it makes for some good stories this fall!
-Charlie
-
Hey Charlie I oughta make it in and see everyone, need to get them ol' boys from Vermont back down here.
-
Good to hear from ya' Levi! :wavey:
The Vermont Crew is supposed to come at some point in October. I will have to check with Fred and find out when they will be setting up camp. I wouldn't mind hunting with them for a weekend.
It would be good to see you down there too. How is school going, or are you done?
-Charlie
-
HOw far is this from Columbus. My daughter teaches at OSU, and it is a 5 hour drive to get there from here in southern KY. Everytime I drive up 71 I see tons of deer, especially in the fall. I might consider this if you guys dont mind?
-
Well, we can talk about that if I see you in Ohio. I'm always looking for a partner. I hunt solo every other year I use a trailer as a base camp. When I have company I backpack into the wilderness a few miles. I have friends with horses to pack the meat out if it becomes difficult. it is still the most affordable elk hunt around although tags have doubled since I first started traveling there, now $550 for either sex. My friends drive straight through from Erie, passing through Columbus, they could always use another driver/someone to split the gas with.
-
Koger,
From Columbus it is roughly 2 hours. You can come up if it works out for you. You are certainly welcome to sit at the fire.
:campfire:
-Charlie
-
Squaretop,
If you are looking for an elk hunting partner, I might be able to help with that! It would depend on the details, but sure sounds interesting..... Do you guys normally get into the elk pretty good? I have no issue shooting either a cow or a bull. If there are cow only tags and they are cheaper, it would be even more feasible for me to come out that way. I have been to Colorado once and LOVED it.
-Charlie
-
Charlie, PM sent.
-
Can't wait for the hunt again this year!! :D
-
Charlie, still got around four more years, 2 associates and a bachelors to work on, started summer courses a week or two ago. I'll have to try and get down more this year, I'll take a Large shirt as well Thanks sir'
-
Gotcha on the shirt Levi. Keep in those books!
-
Seriously considering coming down. I won't know for sure until closer to the date. Looks like a good time though.
-
You are certainly welcome to come and hunt deer or just hang out at the fire a bit!
:campfire:
-
This is a fun hunt! Last year was my first time going to it and everyone made me feel welcome. My first evening there I stalked within 15 yards of a 135"-140" 10pt. It's a ton of land and you won't even know where to start lol I saw deer every day I was there. Hope to see everyone down there!
-
I hope to make this years hunt, last year I missed the hunt & the rut due to work, construction work is feast or famine, I guess I take it as it comes!
-
Hey Mike! Glad to see you posted. I'm just glad to hear you had work. Sometimes it can be hard to come by.
Wished I was able to make the turkey shoot, but had funds and time tied up elsewhere. That is by far my favorite shoot of the year!
You doing the squirrel hunt/fundraiser this year?
Anyway, hope to see you down there this November!
-
Charlie, don't know if you got my earlier message: make mine an XL T shirt.
lu
-
Got your PM on the shirt Lu. Matt(AKA Irish on here) is doing the design for me.
-
Hey Logan rumor has it you were seen shooting a bow with training wheels tell me it aint so!!Lol
I am seriously considering this this year sound like a good time.
-
This trip will be thoroughly thought about at Denton Hill this next month!
-
Greg,
I gotta get to Denton one of these days. How's it going bud? It would be great to have you back down for the hunt.
-Charlie
-
Please keep us updated on this. sounds like fun.
-
I have to check work with those dates, but I'd like to attend. I was planning on going to Ohio again this year anyway.
-
Charlie,
Since our private messages about this event I cannot stop thinking about the rut! I will be starting a new job fairly shortly but have no worries about getting at least half of those days off.
I would like a men's small shirt please!
Looking forward to seeing you all this November. This will be my first season hunting traditional (actually first season archery at all). I am looking forward to all I have to learn from you guys.
-

This is true Jim but after missing a groundhog last night at 20 yards has me thinking I would look better doing this with a Trad bow :biglaugh:
-
Logan,
You are one of the best shooters I have ever seen with a longbow. I couldn't imagine you would want to shoot anything else (recurve or compound). You are welcome with us either way and I hope to see you soon!
TradhunterRn,
Got your shirt order! We are gonna have a good time! You are in luck with learning about trad archery since we have Troy coming to the hunt. Troy builds his own bows and is an expert on arrow building as well. Troy helped Dr. Ashby with his presentation at the Kalamazoo expo. You will leave with more information than you would ever believe!
-Charlie
-
Don't worry Charlie I'll have Logan shooting trad bow again before deer season! Haha he goes through these training wheel phases from time to time...
And Jmatt (uncle Jim) you better be going this year! Its def worth it!
-
Thanks Charlie for the kind words, I'll be there don't worry. Hey Jim I know you don't want to leave your honey hole but it should be a good time with some nice bucks within range probably!
-
Got a shirt on order. I'm already excited and it's four months away. I look forward to the opportunity to hang with some fellow tradgang members.
-
working on the design, i'll send it to you when I get it done. Lost all my numbers on my phone because chloe deleted everything. So call me so I have it and can get your email
-
Charlie is in Canada fishing now. He should be home Sunday.
-
oldskool pm me his number and his email if you have it.
-
So what's the count up to now?
And to answer the past question the move to Ohio is semi-permanent. I'm moving there to go to grad school so I'll be there for at least the next five years
-

There are tentatively 10 guys coming for the hunt at this point. I would say 6 are definite as of now.
-
Charlie-would you take a Michigander on your Ohio hunt? I am in need of some change as am the only trad hunter in my group! I am considering making the trek. Thanks much.
Kenny :bigsmyl:
-
I'm all set. It's just a matter of waiting to go now.
-
Kenny,
No worries about being from the blue and maize state. Come on down!
Pac,
Glad to hear it! See you there.
:campfire:
-
Thanks Charlie! I'll see what I can do to make it down there. By the way...how far is that from Toledo, OH?...just want to get an idea of how far the drive is. Thanks again.
Kenny
-
Kenny,
PM sent.
-
might have to join this hunt sounds like fun. i will check with the boss lady
-
Charlie I got a Stalker recurve now and it shoots like a cannon! I hope to blow through some deer this year, mainly during the aep hunt. Hopefully someone can break the horrible luck that we've had on this hunt! I came close last year, first evening and 15 yards from a 135'' 10pt. Just didn't feel comfy with the shot!!!
-
I am hoping to be the one to break the jinx! I have had too many deer too close. It's gonna happen....
I will be more than happy if you are the one to break it though!!!!
:archer:
-
When ya gonna post the shirt pics? Or do you want me to?
-
Sounds like a good time.

Looks like a motley group to me! :bigsmyl:
If you don't see your name on the list, get a hold of me so I can edit and update as we get closer.
The shirt order will not go in until the 1st week of September in case there are any later additions to our group. I will send you all private messages as to payment amount and address.
**I am also considering a camping and scouting weekend for anyone who hasn't hunted out on AEP yet. Everyone is welcome of course, but I am trying to schedule it mostly to help out people unfamiliar with the area.
-
Who would be interested in a camping and scouting weekend for some new areas on AEP?
There are a number of areas that we haven't set foot on yet and I would be curious what the deer activity and numbers are in those areas. I'm not sure what weekend that could work with my current schedule, but I would like to see if there is some interest.
We would need to bring some climbing tree stands, Thermacells, machetes and binoculars. Some of us could set up in trees on field edges and see what all is going on. Others could drive and glass fields too. This would take quite a few guys to really get a good idea of what's up with the new spots. I know the rabbit hunters will drive the deer out of the fields in November, but if they are in the general area we will see them coming through funnels during the rut in November. We can also scout out funnels up in the woods.
Let me know if there is anyone interested. I'm thinking some time during August or maybe mid-September for a camping and scouting trip. This could even help some of the new guys get an idea of what the area looks like and how it all lays out.
Let me know if you guys want to do some camping, fishing and scouting. Hopefully we don't have to cut trails like Matt and I did last Summer! :readit:
-Charlie
-
Charlie I need 2 shirts, size xl not the way you got it listed
-
Rob,
Sorry for that and got it fixed!
-
I'd love to go scouting but the distance will make this a one trip only event for me. That being said I'm retired and will already be there with my license paid for so I'm planning to stay a little longer if anyone else would care to join me. Everything will be paid for me so why not stay awhile?
-
I like the logo....
-
Pac,
You should shoot BGHunter a pm. He is usually there earlier than any of the rest of us. Maybe make plans to get there early and do some scouting?
-Charlie
-
so is anybody pumped about this?
-
I'll get pumped on my way back from my bear hunt
-
so who plans on only coming down for the mid week to weekend stay, that is my plan seeing as I will be a new daddy and will need to spend more time at home. Anyone want to wack some dove sept 1st with the boom sticks?
-
Quiet thread these days!
I'm limited to this hunt and a possible scouting trip before the hunt. My "better half" isn't liking all my hunting plans. I have to trim them back some or start signing papers. :readit:
-
Well if you sign them papers you get to hunt all you want. I'm just saying its an option. lol
-
That's true, but then I would be so broke I couldn't afford to hunt! :knothead:
-
it's cheaper to keeper
-
Irish Logan and I are going to try for Wednesday through Sunday this year! And yes we are both very pumped about going...gotta get some brown on the ground this year! :campfire:
-
I am thinking probably end of the week if I come. Don't wanna paint myself in a corner though.
-
I'm planning on Wed to Tue but that may get stretched out even longer. I wish I could make it up to scout but it's a little far for a scouting trip.
-
Not if you have a motorcycle and a tarp. Lol
-
Sounds good fellas!
-
Guys-I am very pumped for this trip and cannot wait! I plan on staying the whole trip and might stay longer as I have the first 2 weeks of November off! yea! Won't be able to make an early scouting trip. Not sure when the opening day is for archery in Ohio! Thanks guys and keep 'er cranked up! The thread from Gil has really motivated me to be more adventuresome! Thanks.
Kenny :bigsmyl:
-
I wish I could stay the whole time, but can't leave the wife alone for a full week alone with the baby and a 4 tear old. I may never be forgiven if I did. Lol

Opening day is september 29th.
All opening/closing dates and bag limits can be found here:

-
Got my permit and map printed out. Now if things will just go smoothly between now and then.
Does the campground have water and facilities ie bathroom or do we need to make other arrangements?
-
there is a out house style toilet, but there are no showers, Some prefer the baby wipes baths, I prefer a baby wipe bath in the am and in the afternoon when it is warmer I will take a shower in camp behind a vehicle or two. lol There are pump wells that I have drank from before but it is not garunteed that the handles will be there to pump water. So I usually bring 6 gallons of water in a jug. There is a small general store a few miles from our camp site and there is also a larger town about 15-20 mins away. You can get just about anything you would ever need at the general store. we usually run into town about once every day or 2. I will not be there the whole week due to me and the wife are having a baby about a month before the hunt. I plan on being there 3-4 the the 7th-11th. I wish I could stay longer but, just can't do it this year.
-
Well I finally found out what is wrong with my shoulder after a year and a half. The mother of crappy news, torn rotator cuff. Woo hoo. Oh well I'm not gonna let em touch me till after turkey season.
-
Not sure but I "think" everyone will have to go online and print a permit to have with them for this hunt. I have been down there a few times before camping and needed to go online and print out the permission form. It is free but think everyone might need one.
-
You are right bansheewins, you have to print it out then fill it out and keep it with you at all times while you are down there. I'm really hoping to have my buck before I get down to AEP, I guess we will see!
-
Yeah I was just checking online and below is the link to the permission slip and maps if anyone needs.
http://www.aep.com/environmental/recreation/recland/permit.aspx
I also hope to have a buck by then and be able to come down and hang out and relax and try to fill a doe tag. If not, then I guess it is horn hunting time down there too. HAHA
-
Ok so every please forgive my ignorance for not paying attention to the initial post on this thread. I didn't remember that this was all listed on there and just made a fool of myself repeating it again. Sorry for all of the spam. Cant wait to see everyone there and do some hunting.
-
There are a few stores around the area that the permission slips, there is one about 5-10 minutes from camp.
-
Don't sweat it Larry, sometimes these threads get a little long and the opening info is missed/forgotten. Not a problem!
FYI: I printed off my AEP permit and then shrank it to wallet size on a copier. A little more convenient that way.
Also, still not sure what I can do for a scouting trip. My daughter just made the volleyball team and that will require me to be at a lot of games. I will also be chauffeuring her to many practices. It's getting busy around here these days. :readit:
I better be pumped for this hunt since I may not get many more this year!
-
Charlie,
I have been down there a half a dozen times over the years just on camping and fishing trips back in the day. I did look up the camping site "K" you are referring to. Is this the same place (camp site) that you had this hunt the past couple years? I noticed that there is hunting right North and South of our campsite. Which of these areas do the guys typically hunt or do they utilize both of them? I have also printed a few topo maps to see the lay of the land in case I do not get down to scout before then.
I would like to make it down there at least once before to get a lay of the land (bedding, feeding). I sure hope that it turns out to be a good season/hunt for everyone it sounds exciting and will be my first group/camping hunt. Should be some good times and stories at the fire. Plus it will be nice to put names and faces together.
Larry
-
There are only a few crop fields that I saw while I was hunting down there last year. Pinch points are going to be the key and hopefully finding where the does are at. Should be fun and I can't wait!
-
Nicholas-thanks for the info
Another question-regarding using a GPS to get down there...any address or something to load into the GPS?
Thanks guys! I'm really excited about the trip and will have some fun for sure!

Most of our hunting is done to the north, although there are a couple good spots on the south side. Mike has said in the past that there are some really good spots behind Windy Hill camping area. Never hunted there myself, but he has seen some big bucks in there from what I hear.
-
KennyB,
Put cumberland ohio in your gps, when you get there you head south on 83, about 7-8 miles out of town you will see a sign that says console energy you turn left there. Follow that road straight until you see the sign for camp site K also known as bicentenial, turn left there and look for the signs that we will have up.
Charlie, I pick up some corrigated plastic for signs that won't be affected by rain. Gonna make a stencil and paint em. BTW have you priced the shirts yet?
-
so did the thread die? lol
-
Not dead, just hibernating until we get closer to the hunt I imagine. We are still 2 1/2 months away from camp. I wish I could have put together a time to get out there to scout sooner, but I haven't been able to get free. My daughter made the volleyball team and now most of my time is locked up with getting her to practices and the games that will begin shortly.
************************************************
I might be able to do a camp/scouting trip on the weekend of September 8th. I have to work it out with my wife 1st, but could anyone else make that weekend? Let me know if anyone can come and I will post details here as soon as I know for sure. Likely Sat(8th)morning to Sunday(9th) evening.
-
Ill be turning 30 that weekend and the wife has to work so ill be free.
-
I forget sometimes you are just a young pup yet Matt! :goldtooth: Check in with Alex and Logan to see if they might be able to make it. I forgot to run it past my wife this morning, but will ask her this evening.
-
Well I always forget that your an old fart. Lol you deffinetly don't seemn your age.
-
Charlie, Unfortunately I have a pig roast that I have to attend for work on Saturday the 8th BUT if you want I could come down first thing in the AM on Sunday the 9th and we could walk to the north and south and do some initial scouting. I am only an hour and maybe 20 minutes from there no big deal could be down real early if you want.
Larry
-
My wife is on board! The camping/scouting trip will be the 8th and 9th. Everyone that wants to come is welcome. Bring your own gear and food. Should be a good time.
Larry,
Come down early on Sunday morning that should be fine. We will be looking to camp in area K as always. I will post a pic of my old red truck for you to look for.
-
Larry, where ya from?
-
Awesome. I live in Navarre off route 21 and 30 by Massillon. Where are you from? I will just plan on coming down real early Sunday morning and plan it out before we get to that time. I would like to scout some before we get down there and hunt. I have already printed some topo maps and have a decent idea but want to check out food sources and bedding around there.
-
I am another Michigander who would like to join your hunt in November. I would also like to order a shirt Size Large. Please let me know how to pay for the shirt and let me know if there is anything else you need. I am really looking forward to this hunt -- it sounds like a lot of fun!
-
Larry I live near buckeye lake.
Charlie, Are you going down friday night? I'm gonna bring my rifle so I can wack some squirrels while I'm down there. I also asked alex and logan what they thought but haven't heard back from em.
Did Tony get ahold of you? He told me he may not make it down this year because they are starting a new contract and he won't have any vaca time.
-
My parents live on off 21 in Massillon. I grew up in Canton and played football at McKinley for a couple years before "retiring" due to too many injuries. You can guess how I feel about their move to Massillon!
Navarre has some EXCELLENT deer hunting spots from what I have heard. Never got to hunt the area myself, but have heard plenty of stories back in the day(80's) when I was a kid.
You are still welcome in camp Larry, even if you are a fan of the boys to the west of Canton!
Just messing with you. I haven't really followed the McKinley vs. Massillon rivalry since I moved away from the area. I know it is still strong, but I have bigger fish to fry!
-
Matt,
Yeah, I heard from Tony. He might make it down for a day, but that's about it. I won't be down to AEP for the scouting trip until Sat morning(8th). I will leave as early as I can to get there at a decent time, but leaving Friday night isn't an option.
-Charlie
-
Hey Larry your on the top of the page!
-
Just got back from camping at AEP..was nice to get back out there, got me even more excited for the hunt! :campfire:
-
Did you and steph go out fpr your vaca?
-
Anyone that has been to AEP before...
I've been looking over my Ohio "topo" atlas at the are we're hunting and I've got a couple questions. First, my topo map isn't really a topo map. No contour lines at all. What's the terrain like? My map shows lots of ponds within a mile of the campsite, are the areas around these ponds wooded? I've got to find a REAL topo map.
-
Almost all the land is wooded there, only a few crop fields and grown-up fields that I know of. There are a lot or patches of pines that have been planted through out AEP property also.
-
You need to be part mountain goat to climb some of the hills down there
-
Dale,
Just saw your post. You are welcome to come on down. I will put you on the hunt and shirt list.
God bless,
Charlie
:campfire:
-
Well last weekend I hiked through guernsey countys course 3 times and shot 105 targets and today I probably walked 8 miles finding dove fields so I'm getting the legs warmed up for the hunt. Anyone goin dove huntin openin day?
-
So how many people plan on attending the scouting trip, itKs my bday that weekend but fortuanatly the wife is working so I'll be there. Yall get to see me become an old man, turnin 30.
-
It's looking like we don't have much interest for the scouting trip. That's okay. That will leave more squirrels for me and Matt to shoot while scouting! Larry, have you decided on whether or not you are coming down?
-
I might be able to get out there for some or all of the 8th (not the 9th though). No clue about Dylan though - his schedule is currently very girlfriend-centric.
Are you guys camping there Friday night or just showing up sometime Saturday?
-
Hey Guys-cannot make the scouting trip in early September! Please keep us posted on how things are looking or whatever you find i.e. rubs, scrapes etc.! I'm saving my vacation time for November.
Dale-look forward to meeting you at camp!
Thanks Charlie & Matthew!
Kenny :bigsmyl:
-
sounds good jim it'll be good to see ya more than once a year
lol
-
well heard from logan today, way it looks him and alex aren't coming to scout.
-
Scouting trip is being cancelled due to lack of interest. That's a lot of gas money etc. for no one to show up. Matt and I are going to hunt locally that day instead. Not a big deal, but I figured I could save the gas money for all the other things/sports my kids are using my money to buy or play.
-
Is anyone still excited about this hunt?
-
celticknot-I'm leaving for this hunt in 62 days (yes I'll be there 4 days early) I'm trying to forget about it so time will pass quicker.
-
Celticknot, I will be thinking about you guys. Hope it doesn't get too cold up there!!. Wish I could make it.
-
Will try, Just make sure you get some hogs lined up. Lol
-
Been praticing time coming up fast.
-
It won't be too long now! How is your shoulder/neck Jim?
I was out on some private property cutting shooting lanes for a few stands this afternoon. The mornings are getting colder, acorns are dropping and Fall is in the air!
God bless all, it won't be long!
-Charlie
P.S. The shirt order will be going in soon and I will get you all the payment info via pm.
-
Sorry guys the computer has been down and we are building right now so I haven't had it setup. I am looking forward to the hunt it will be here before you know it.
Charlie, small world that is for sure. I actually grew up in North Canton and went to Jackson myself so McKinley and Massillon both are not my favorites. HAHA
-
Irish yes I'm excited for this hunt! Lol Logan and I just did some planning for it the other night....oh and I got my zipper back it's shooting pretty nice :campfire: :archer2:
-
Well I'm officially 30 now, and I got a sweet birthday present, got around 800 acres of private land to hunt this year about 3 minutes from my house. first time I've had private land to hunt that actually holds deer. Plus lots of squirrel hunting for me and my dog. woo hoo, can't wait to see all my buddies again at the camp.
-
SWEEET! How did you run into that property?
-
Asked the biggest farmer in my area for permission, lucky you didn't make it or I probably wouldn't have had time to go. I was wrong on how much property it is, it's more like 1200acres. lol so pumped.
-
I was thinking of doing the same kind of thing recently. I thought I should just drive east a bit and stop at any old farm that looked big and ask.
-
check your auditors website and pick out land and find the owners house and ask.
-
Plat books are also sold at the county court house. They show a map of the county with landowners name and amount of acerage.
-
2 weeks away from season opener, everbody got there arrows ready broadheads sharp and clothes washed?
-
Still have some sharpening to do, but the arrows are ready.
-
I have a few arras I can use but I need to build my other dozen, and I need to sharpen atleast 4 broadheads. And I have a whole cedar chest of wool that needs to be cleaned. lol so yeah I'm totally not ready. Plus with a new place to huntI have no idea where the deer are.
-
You have to get the overhead views off of Google. That will get you in the general right area to start out.
-
I think I've finally found campground K on Google earth. Now I just have to figure out how to get that into a usable form. I'll be there in about 45 days. Is anyone else planning on getting there earlier than the 3rd? Looks like I'll arrive on the 31st or 1st.
-
Just follow 83 south out of Cumberland and over on T13 is area K.
-
I may be out the second, in the evening. I'll set up and hunt sat sun, then go home and come back wed after work.
-
I Hope to make it down for a long weekend I'll know more as it gets closer, (depends on my Work schedule!) it will be nice to see the Gang again
-
it would be great to see ya
-
Mike,
Hope you can make it out! Haven't seen you in awhile since I wasn't able to make the turkey shoot up at Geauga Bowmen.
-
Heading down for the Squirrel hunt, may put on some miles in the newly opened area and some old haunts I'll post my findings! :archer:
-
Looks like my being able to attend this one is up in the air. Better half has been sent to South Texas to work for the next few months and that only leaves me here to attend to everything.
She comes in about every two weeks for afew day and looks like that will be the same time as the hunt.
Travel plans for her means I have to be here to pick her up at the airport and carry her back.
I'll know more as the days progress.
Troy
-
Just keep me updated Troy. I am putting the shirt order in this week. Do you still want one?
-
Charlie,
I'll go ahead and say scratch my order. The way it looks right now my being there is about a 1 in 100 chance.
Troy
-
Gotchya
-
Put me down for a XL~ Mike
-
OK Mike.
-
I'll need a 2XL shirt please
-
Alright Pac. The hunt isn't too far away now.
-
For those that have hunted this area, are the tree's suited for a climber, or better to stick with a hang on and sticks?
-
Both will work fine in that area, it just comes done to what you prefer better.
-
I like the hang on and sticks because it is versitile and can be used on pretty much anything. I also bring a faom pad just incase I can't get in before light just to sit and not make a ton of noise before I can see what's around me. Who all is syked to get on the road for this hunt?
-
If I can get one more deer down before the hunt, then I am camp cook!
-
Congrats on the doe, and you will likely get another before this hunt(might want to order that apron) 8^)
Thanks for the reply's about stand choice guys.
-
Getting all my stuff together. should be down there on the 1st. or the 31. Always a good time look foward to it every yr since it started.
-
come on charlie bad another one, I want you to be camp beatch for once. lol
-
If I can get another one in this county, then I am done hunting here. We have a two deer limit.
I will shoot another doe if one offers the chance and/or a buck would be cool. Either way, if I get a buck or doe, I am done at 2 deer here.
-
huh?
-
I didn't realize that antlerless tags took it to 4.
-
Shirt order went in today. I will be letting you all know the cost through PM tomorrow. The guy who normally handles that for me wasn't in the office today. He should get back to me tomorrow.
God Bless,
Charlie
-
Sounds great Charlie. Man I'm starting to realize I've got a lot to accomplish before this hunt. Build arrows, refurbish stand, check all my camping gear.... This month is going to DRAAAAG by.
-
Sorry for not getting a hold of you guys about the shirt cost yesterday. I haven't heard back about the cost yet. As soon as I know I will pass it on to you with my address via PM. I'm sure it will be the same as in the past, but I want to make sure of that first.
God bless,
Charlie
-
Still haven't heard from him yet.....
-
Gettin closer
-
not close enough
-
Ok. I got the price information about the shirts. You should have recieved a PM about the cost. If not, then get a hold of me.
God bless,
Charlie
-
A reminder for those attending. Election day is November 6th. Get your absentee voting done. I voted today, took less than 5 minutes . Of course I live in a small community. YMMV.
-
-
Cant wait to come down. I just got my first doe of the season last evening. It was a small one but a fantastic hunt.

-
Charlie, money sent for shirt thanks. 2 wks. away going to be a great time. Think Vern is going to be there to.
-
Sweet, I saw vern this spring, hes a blast! Hey jimmy, I'm gonna be down the 2nd after work but gonna leave on sunday night and leave my tent set up. would you mind keeping an eye on it until I come back wed. I think there are gonna be others there with you. But I would greatly appreciate it if you could. Can't stay the whole week this year, I'm getting a present either tomorrow or wednesday new bouncing baby girl. I'll post pictures when I can. :)
So is anyone stoked yet? It's almost here!!
-
Just got back from the Squirrel Hunt, Acorns everywhere, lots of sign, looks like this Deer Hunt will have no shortage of Good Bucks! I'm Stoked!
-
All good news boys. Congrats in advance Matt!
-
awesome
-
I have a 7lbs .3oz 22.75" baby girl that was born at 8:59 this morning. I'll post pictures later when I get a chance. SO HAPPY. And I don't even care that I'm missin out on huntin. lol
-
Congrats on the baby!
-
congrats Matt. Sure have no problem watching your camp.Enjoy your time with the family.
-
Hey guys...I'm stoked for this hunt for sure! I can't wait and am working on all my hunting/camping gear! I also look forward to meeting you guys and sharing the camp fire! Congratulations to Matt and the new addition to his family! Thanks and see you soon!
Charlie-I never got a pm about the t-shirt (XL). Thanks.
Kenny :bigsmyl:
-
Congrats on the baby.
-
Congrats on the new addition to the family. That must be one heck of a wife to let you run off that soon with the new born. :o )
Can't wait to meet everyone and do some hunting and sitting around the fire telling stories, hopefully some hunting stories from our trip.
for you hunters who have been to this, can we bring our own firewood or do they have restrictions on this? Also, are you able to bring any type of 4 wheeler, mule ect.?
-
I'm pretty sure there are no motorized vehicles aloud, and I'm not sure about the firewood. Charlie or Irish would know about the firewood. I can't wait to get down there and meet everyone and break the streak of bad luck that this trip has had for killing deer!!
-
congrats on baby
-
I'm all set and standing by.

Welcome to the new trad hunting world....
Charlie Merriam George
And yes her middle name is spelled exactly like the turkeys. :D can't believe the wife finally went for it. Thank you everyone for the congratulations.
-
Beautiful baby with a great name!!!
4 wheelers are restricted in some areas, but not others.
Firewood can only come from the same counties where we are hunting (Noble and Morgan).
Now that the monkey is off my back, I feel better about this trip!
-
I will be picking up the shirts on Tuesday. Please get payment out as soon as possible. I can't discuss anything else on this forum money-wise, but I really don't want to front the cost for that many shirts out of my personal account. Also, thanks to those of you who already sent payment.
We will all be out there hunting soon! The rut is coming...
-
Hey Charlie, I looked up the emerald ash borer and you are allowed to transport wood from any counties now because every county has it now. SO YOU CAN NOW TRANSPORT FIREWOOD. So with that said if you plan on having fires at night bring some wood so we will have plenty, or there are places around the area we will be hunting, that sell wood. does anyone have any questions about the hunt or anything in general, if so i'll answer what i can.
-
I'll bring a truck load of wood
-
I will be bringing a good bit of wood. I have plenty.
-
sounds good, I'll also be bringing wood, hopefully I bring enough this time to keep my stove burning the who;le time I'm there. lol
-
Ive got a question, is this area covered with that lovely multifloral rose that eats you alive? If so, whats the trick to hunting in and around that stuff?
-
Charlie, I sent my money for the shirt earlier this week, I hope you've got it already.
Celticknot; I've got access to wood but not a lot of spare room in the car. Will there be wood around the campsite to pick up and burn? Can you give me some kind of idea about the cover in the area? Open woods? Thick nasty stuff everywhere? Hardwoods? Pines?
-
There's a lot of different woods there. A lot of planted pine thickets but mostly open woods that's very hilly. There's only a few fields that I know of down there, 60,000 acres is a lot to hunt and its hard to find a starting point. Hopefully the deer are moving good but I'm going for a turkey since I have my buck and a doe already!
-
I'll be turkey hunting the 3rd and 4th for turkey's. There is some mutliflora rose, they key to navigating it is get a higher pain tolarence. lol Just try to navigate around it when you come up on it. That's the best zI can tell you. Unless you want to drop a little cash and buy some brush chaps from the dog shop in cumberland, which I do suggest buying anything from him if only a bag of ice, keep a great local buisness alive. Logan I'm gonna clean all the turkeys out of that corn field so don't be lookin there for em. lol
-
As logan said there is a mixture of everything, there is flat ground, thick woods, open woods, pines, western style open plains, if you wanted any kind of hunting imaginable this is the place.
As for wood anything laying on the ground is free game. So if you don't have room, we understand. There is plenty of fallen wood around so everything should be fine for the fire pit, I just need mine for my stove in my tent. Gotta stay warm at night. PS if anyone brings propane heaters remember to leave your tent vented.
-
Logan,
I got a turkey spot for you. I have seen turkeys every time I hunt one particular area. Never a deer, but always turkeys. They must like that spot. It is a big hard wood ridge.
Got shirt money from:
Shane
TKing
Maddog(will ship yours soon)
Mike B
-
What does the terrain look like...
There are marshy areas, pines, plenty of thickets, hardwood ridges, deep ravines, open CRP fields, high walls and anything else you can imagine.
If you want to spot and stalk in the fields, it can be done. If you want to sit in a tree stand or build a ground blind, it can be done. If you want to still hunt some BIG woods, it can be done. There is something for everyone.
That being said...
The fields might be a little less productive in November than October since rabbit season will be starting. The dogs usually push the deer from the fields into the woods.
-
Sounds good Charlie! Alex is suppose to send the money for his and mine, I'll have to remind him! If you find me turkeys I'll shoot them :)
-
Charlie, you should be getting my money I put it in the mail Thursday at work. Can't wait getting pretty excited.
-
Just so everyone knows it's an option. Me and a couple guys have brought the smokepoles aka bang bangs and done some hunting in the afternoons after lunch for squirrels grouse woodcock and rabbits. You basic hunting license will cover all of this. And for you guys from out of state buy an either sex tag for deer if this is the only time you plan to come hunt ohio this season. And if you do plan to hunt any birds such as woodcock or grouse please do the HIP survey on your hunting license. I want yall to have a good experience while your down here so you should experience it all. :D Bring a good attitude and lots of arras. And all your BS. lol
-
Looks like due to work I will be hunting the 6th 7th and 8th this year. If I am lucky, I will pitch camp on the 3rd and hunt for that day before returning to work until the 6th. Getting more excited by the day!
-
come on we are 2 weeks away and there is barely any movement on this board, lets talk about what your campin in what food your bringin, just talk. lol
-
celticknot:
That would probably be a good thing since I have not tent camped since I was in Scouts. I am borrowing my brother's tent, which will be WAY too big. I think it is a 6 person. So if anyone is on the fence about coming but doesn't have a tent they can bunk with me. Plenty of space
-
Oh and I was looking at google maps trying to find this campsite. Is it on the corner of township road 2 and township road 13?
-
Head east on 13 off of 83 and you will see a small lake on the left, the camping sites are on the east bank of the lake. I really recommend for you fellas nylon tent camping borrowing or purchasing a mr. buddy heater, or some form of a propane heater, and bring a grill proprane tank and the adapter hose and leave the tank outside and your heater in, it will save you a bundle on propane sine you'll burn a one pound bottle a night.
-
it is just past TR2
-
Charlie, I sent My shirt $ last week. Let me now if it arrived; don't want you to "cover".

If you have a nylon tent, get a "big" tarp to go completely over it. This will stop the wind from going thru it, and keep some heat it. I dont recomend sleeping with the heat on all night. I personally turn mine on for about 10min in the morning to take the chill out of the air and to dry up any moisture.
-
Coming from the sunny south there just isn't any way I can survive the brutal conditions in a tent. So I'm showing up in this.
I was actually gonna bring a tent but oldskool balked at the idea. Something to do about a pee-can, not to be confused with a pecan as pronounced down here. I don't know the whole story so you guys be sure to ask around the campfire.
As for food I plan to bring the normal stuff like hog jawls, grits 'possum & the like.
-
We won't go there Pac
-
Oh :scared: I thought your computer was still on the fritz

This will be primetime for deer movement when we are down there this year, you won't catch me chasing tree rats during deer season. Especially in November when the bucks will be cruising :knothead: I might chase some turkeys with the recurve while I'm down there but no smallgame for me :biglaugh:

Might be tough finding a tarp that will fit over a 6 person tent :(
-
I was also wondering; do you guys normally hunt in pairs? This will be my first time on this property, plus it is my first year bowhunting so I want to soak up and learn as much as I can.
-
I don't know if the others are hunting in pairs, it's my first hunt with them too. I figure I kept oldskool safe from the gators and killer razorbacks when he came down here hunting with me so I'm kind of hoping for the same up there.
I doubt if there are many gators or hogs but I am told bigfoot might be roaming around as well as snowbeast or two. Plus when I get lost I will have someone to find me out there before I ice over.
-
Get n real close now looking forward to meeting lots of new people this year.
-
Getting lost isn't an issue. Down there, getting out of the woods usually means climbing up a hill. So if you are lost, climb a hill and you will likely find a road!
I love hunting the power lines and ravines! I'm also hoping for a good cold snap and the moon phase should be good as well I think. I haven't done much hunting this year so I am ready to spend some long spells in the woods. If a coyote, turkey or deer shows itself the arrows are flying! :readit:
-Charlie
Lu, Logan, Alex and Irish- I recieved your money. Thanks guys. I am late picking up the shirts as the last few days have been busy. I will pick them up tomorrow for sure and mail the ones that need mailed on Friday. I will bring the rest to camp with me.

=Some of us go out in groups and hunt in the same general area, but try to be respectful of the people you are hunting with and sit till dark or after and wait on everyone to walk out together to make sure everyone makes it back to the truck together and safe. I'd hate to try to find someone in the dark with no idea to really look if someone didn't show up to the truck and may be injured, especially in the dark. Also know where your hunting buddy is hunting.
Pac is that jaw bacon your speaking of? If so I love that stuff and grits, aint had opposum yet but I'm game. lol
-
celticknot -
That sounds good to me. Just looking to pick the brains of more experienced bowhunters :)
-
So I was doing some looking on my schedule and if there is anyone staying later than the 11th I may be able to stay as well since work cuts out the first half of this hunt for me. I know at east one person mentioned having the first two weeks of Nov off.
Just let me know so I can ask the wife if she is cool with it :)
-
It's gettin' close guys and I'm really cranked about this hunting & camping trip! I've been so doggone busy, I haven't been out yet here in Michigan.
Charlie-keep my t-shirt til I get down there!
RN-I might stay past the 11th! Depends on what happens. So, I am game. Also, I heading down on the 1st. Don't have to work until the 15th!
Kenny :bigsmyl:
-
Whats the "leaf" report down there? Looking like Mi leaves will be down by this weekend.
-
Really depends on where you are. I can call one of my buddies and see what it's like down there.
Kenny, I'll trade ya! I'm only gonna be able to come 6 days and I usually take 9. but 2 of those six are next weekend huntin for a thanksgiving turkey, but if I get one I'm gonna try to wack some deer and some tree rats.
Tradhunter RN I'll tell ya everything I know, so it'll take about 15 minutes. lol I'd say 90% of deer hunting is location location location. find a place with deer then find there patterns and sit inbetween bedding and food and water. Or bait em.
-
I'm not as worried about leaves as I am hoping some acorns are still dropping! If you are in the woods down there and still hear acorns dropping in November then put on the brakes! Hunt right there.... and expect to see deer.
-
Charlie, family from the Columbus area tells me that the weather is going to get nasty during the hunt, to include lots of rain and possibly considerable snow. Now how is a guy from Arizona supposed to deal with snow! I hope that T shirt is waterproof.
-
The snow won't stick since the ground is still too warm. The nasty weather should blow over before the hunt. Just be sure to bring your wool!!! You are sleeping in a tent?
-
A tent is all I can squeeze into a suitcase! Lots of wool, great idea! FYI , I hope the extended forecast is wrong, calls for a lot of precip.
-
One thing to remember this is Ohio. our weather changed by the minute can be snowing one minute and 80 the next. HAHA
-
I'm in a tent too, but I have my Mr. Heat propane heater to keep me warm! It works great and I usually sleep like a baby on my air mattress with the inside temp at 55-60 degrees all night. :bigsmyl:
Also, there is a hitch in the t-shirt design fellas....
They printed the same design on the back and front of the shirt. It was supposed to have 2 different designs. The one they used was the outline of Ohio with the buck overlayed on it. The shirts look great, but they left one of Matt's designs off. Last year they left the date off of the back. In the future, I will have to put the order in earlier so I can look and the shirts and have time to reorder if they mess it up again. I wouldn't be so tolerant, but the guy is a friend from church. Also, the shirts themselves are really good quality and he charges less than they are worth as a favor.
I hope it is ok and like I said, I will post a pic later. If anyone wants their money back let me know, but the shirts are still cool and the colors look great!
-
No problem here Charlie. That doe wasn't really going to survive anyway. ;-)
-
:( That sucks! Tell him my skies are a little blue.
-
howdy squaretop, are you flying or driving in?
-
(http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r267/bowmofo/PA130431.jpg) I am looking at Nov. 9~10~11 as a target E.T.A may stretch it one way or the other or both, as I will have my son with me, (no more tents for me)
-
damn mike your movin up in the world. lol
-
Thinking of going down to take a look around Sunday. Anyone know of where to pick up a good map locally.
-
there is a little store named clarks in cumberland that should have an ok one, it just the one on the aep site but it's better than nothing. There is also a store on 83 called carriage markets that should have the same one. If you do stop in these small buisnesses try to buy a drink or snack just to help out the local economy, if these stores disappear you will have to drive over a half an hour or more for any supplies. We need to keep them open. Also in cumberland as you are headed south on the edge of toen there is a dog shop/ supplies store, I always buy stuff from Jeff everytime I am down that way, he has ice, snuff pop, propane, and a bunch of odds and ends and you can hang out and shoot the breeze, he is very good people. He also carrries so nice knives and ammo and other odds and ends.
-
Yeah when I checked a deer in, I bought a bunch of snacks/drinks just to help support them for doing the service. Speaking of checking deer, which of the local places does this?
-
Thanks guys will shop around if places are open. I always need stuff for the retired mad bird dog. Matt saw your request for beman 400's you still need them? If so i'll be down near you on I-70 tomorrow. We can meet somewhere or you can ride along if not busy with the new baby. Let me know what length because a few are cut shorter and some are full length.
-
I just need 2 full length so I can cut them slowly to bare shaft them.
I live a few minutes south of 70.
I really appreciate the thought, what would you want for them? I can meet you at 37and 70 whenever you need me to. I'll pm you my number. Thanks I really appreciate it.
-
pm'd you back Matt
-
got it, see ya tomorrow
-
So who all is gonna be down there this coming weekend? I'll be down this friday night. I'm bringin the boom stick to wack a turkey. Hopefully the rain holds out for a while, I can deal with snow.the way it's looking its gonna rain that monday and will clear up by thursday.
-
I just got back from down there and saw 2 jakes that looked miserably wet.
-
I will be setting up camp late Friday evening on the 2nd. I will stay from that Friday to Wednesday the 7th. Then I have to come home for 2 days and will be back Friday night to Sunday the 11th for more hunting/camping.
So if any of you guys get down there before late friday evening on the 2nd there won't be signs set up. That is, unless everyone wants to make sure they mark their campsite as an Ohio Trad Deer Hunt area. It would make it considerably easier to find each other since some of us are showing up at different times.
If there are any questions please call me at 614-209-8568.
*************************************************
Also, all AEP areas are first come first serve on the campsites. The camping is free and there is always a chance that there may not be many spots left in area K. I cannot reserve them, but I will "hold" as many areas as possible.
If we do need to move areas it will be to camp area A where there is generally more room. K is better in my opinion, but A does seem to be more available. If we have to move to area A then I will put up a post on here. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THIS THREAD BEFORE YOU LEAVE!
If we do move to area A, it is straight down 83 on the left. Area A is directly on Rt 83. You can't miss it. You just have to go further south on 83 than you would have for the turn off to get to area K.
*************************************************
We are getting close fellas! :campfire:
-
Here are the directions to get to area K one more time for those of you with questions.
-From I70 go south on Rt 83.
-Take Route 83 South for about 15-20 miles all the way to Cumberland.
-Continue on Route 83 South through Cumberland for about 7 more miles.
-Turn left on T13/Lincoln Highway. There is a lighted Console Energy sign at this road.
-Follow TR13 straight until you see the sign for Area K on your left.
-Turn left and follow that road into the camp area,
-Do not turn to the right.
-We usually camp in the SW corner of the campgrounds.
-This would be the 1st road on the left in the main camping area.
AGAIN, PLEASE CHECK THIS THREAD BEFORE YOU LEAVE.
THOSE OF YOU GETTING THERE EARLY; PLEASE CALL ME IF THERE IS LIMITED CAMPING AND NOT ENOUGH SPACES FOR ALL OF US. THAT WAY I CAN LET EVERYONE KNOW TO GO TO AREA A INSTEAD.
-
Got my stuff packed and everything is loaded up. I planned to head that way on Thursday but I may leave a couple of days early since I don't have anything going on anyway. Not for sure yet.
I posted the photo of my truck and camper and I might be the only one with Arkansas plates so if you see me come on over.
-
It's gettin' close for sure and I can't wait! Really looking forward to this trip. I plan on being there Thursday afternoon to set up camp.
Charlie-I got your and Irish's phone number and will call if need be...if that's okay.
How about phone service down there? is there fire pits ready? Lastly, is there a lot of trees in the camping area, so I can tie up some tarps? Thanks guys...this is gonna be fun! I am really looking forward to meeting everyone!
Kenny :archer2:
-
Lol that's how ya know they're jakes. Lol Tom's would move somewhere a little more dry. Did you get a chance to check out that field?
-
yeah they planted what looks like sorghum. I don't know if turkeys like it, but I know pheasants do. Turkeys were on main road by "G"
-
whoever is getting there this week try to save the biggest camp area you can, the one on the top drive that is really big would be great but whatever you can get and save would be great.
Ken you feel free to call me.
Go to the top of hills and you will have phone service, I have verizon, not sure about others.
There are trees around the camps. It depends which camp you are in if there is an actual fire pit, but there are places for fires in the camps.
-
Looking like I wont be able to get down there till Sunday after dark(prob close to midnight).
-
Ken,
That's ok bud. We'll be waiting on ya'. Feel free to call, but understand it might take a bit for me to get back to you. I will go up the hill to check my messages every now and again.
I'm hoping the deer will be hunkered down during this bad weather. That way, once it blows through by the weekend maybe we will have some good deer movement. The weather is supposed to be good Friday to Monday at least.
-
Got these made up just for this trip. Ready to use one or two of them too!

Those sure are some purty arras! It is ALMOST a shame to get some blood on 'em.
-
I'll be there Wed afternoon. Tent camping, driving a blue ford focus. I probably should have already asked but what kind of roads am I going to be dealing with? Paved, gravel or MUD?
I'm really excited about this hunt.
-
Gravel will be the worst of the roads unless you get REALLY lost! :biglaugh:
Did anyone check on with Jim(bghunter) to find out when he is going to get there?
-
I sent him a PM. He's going to be there either Wed or Thursday. We'll hook up and pick the best spot we can.
-
gotta wash my wool and make a bed frame for my hospital matress and I'll be pretty much ready to go. May try to fletch a few arrows for target shooting. think I'm gonna be bringin some of my wifes homemade punkin pie to eat sat and sun.
-
Hi all I'll be leaving home sometime before noon. or atleast that my plans. so ready for all this rain to be over with and get some hunting in. The deer should be really chasing now. been seeing lots of bucks going to and from work
-
Jim,
Call me ASAP if you run into any problems finding camp sites. I hope you run into that big 8 pointer again!
-Charlie
-
Getting excited!!! I got my new Tall Tines bareshaft tuned and got the arrows fletched. Now I just need to shoot it a lot so I don't miss once I get a shot at something! Alex and I will be down on the Wednesday the 7th, hopefully around 3pm so we can hunt that evening! Can't wait to see everyone.
-
I sure will Charlie. Would be great run into him. we'll see. weather looking better down there. according to weather channel. hope see everyone down there. Great time every year.
-
So I finally printed my permit and reading the regulations. I was surprised to find that we can't shoot groundhogs, drink beer, or target shoot?!
Not sure about you guys but I prefer a few brews by my fire :)
-
Was out tonight in a blind on food plot. 9 different bucks everyone chasing/dogging a doe. I haven't seen that many bucks in a long time. It is getting nice and crazy out there.
-
All packed up and leaving early in the morning. Hoping to get there early enough for a late afternoon stroll through the woods.
-
Well to let you know RN as long as you are respectful of others the camp area caretakers turn a blind eye to all of that. I know first hand.
-
Charlie, just received my shirt. They are good looking. Forgot to mention when i was done there Sunday, that there were 5 camps set up at the campgrounds.
-
Just got word from Pac. He is at the camp already.
-
FYI. Pac informed me that non resident hunters have to pay cash for license or get them online before you come.
-
Fixing to leave now be down there in 3 to 4 hrs. Going to be great weather according to my phone. Later.
-
Damn that was quick.
-
Drive safe guys........
-
Just about packed up and ready to go Thursday morning, should be there early afternoon! Wish us luck! lol
See you there guys!

Not true, my brother just bought an out of state license at the Gander Mountain in Canton with plastic.
-
They made Pac pay cash
-
Thats Bull****, I would be having a talk with the manager of that store. That's stateism!
-
Some stores require cash, but others take plastic. Right here in Galion, Polands takes a card fpr a license and tags, but DDM makes you pay cash. It all depends on who is selling it to you.
-
Ive had to pay cash every time. Same old question, where is the nearest atm?
-
Looks Like I should be able to come down next week on the 6th; might be late evening/night.
-
3 guys are already in camp, but haven't been able to hunt yet due to rain. Jim told me the camping situation looks good. Plenty of sites at this point. Weather should be breaking soon with cloudy skies and cold temps. That should equal great deer movement and better stories!
:campfire:
-
Cant wait. I am actually going to hunt here locally Friday afternoon and Saturday morning then head down there by lunch time on Saturday to setup. Again this being my first there will be no problem finding a spot for the tent along with everyone else?
-
Shouldn't have a problem finding a spot
-
We have one guy camping in area G as of now. He said that many areas in K were very wet due to the recent heavy rains. I will keep you all posted. I am still planning on site K for now. We have several guys camping in there.
I will post again later tonight or tomorrow.
-Charlie
-
Checking in from camp K. The rain quit this morning around 11. Saw one doe early (no shot) and a forked horn on the way out in the evening. Looking forward to seeing everyone.
-
if anyone talks to kenn in camp g tell him I didn't hang up on him, my phone died.
-
Ohhh yeahhh. Already seeing deer on the first morning of hunting! Hopefully we will have one on the meat pole soon fellas........
-
I'll be there tomorrow night.
-
I might be bailing out on this hunt. I might have been over ambitious when signing up...
-
ugh.....when will Tuesday get here! lol, I am pumped. Keep us posted from the field boys :)
-
Been scrambling guys, built a trailer hitch for my car last night. Have to paint it later today and mount it on the car. Now to find a trailer. lol Hoping to get there late Sunday night, or Monday morning.
Glad to hear you guys are seeing deer, cant wait to hear some storys.
-
I have a feeling someone's going to break the bad luck streak this year at this hunt! Can't wait to get down there to hunt and hang out with everyone!
-
Good luck guys! :campfire:
-
I'm going to be getting down there late tonight or early Sat morning. I have to stay late at work today.....
Hopefully be there late tonight though.
-
I will be there Saturday afternoon around lunch time. Going to hunt here tonight and tomorrow morning. The movement is insane right now. Good friend shot a nice 130 8pt this morning and grunted in another one right after that.
-
I saw a buck that I had on camera this summer that should go over 170 fairly easy last night with a doe. My buck tag is already filled, I'm just glad he stayed well out of bow range so I didn't have to pass him!!! He's a 10pt with a double brow on one side, his g2's are at least 12", g3's 11" and g4's are probably 6-7" with really long main beams that sweep up in front of his face!!!! This is the 3rd season I've laid eyes on him but I get to excited and shoot the first nice buck that walks by lol Hopefully he can make it another year! Alex and I will be down wendesday around 3pm
-
Any advice/tactics you guys could share on hunting this area? Im a flat lander, hills and big woods are an unsolved mystery.......
-
Same with me lol I did hunt done at AEP last year for this trad hunt and it was overwhelming! The best thing I could say is to find funnels or pinch points that lead to food or coming out of a thicket. Last year a few of us did spot and stalk in one section but with rabbit season all the deer are going to be pushed up in the woods.
-
Pack light. Head back into the woods with the wind in your face. Then sit on a good funnel.
Or just find the thickest crap you can. Tunnel into it until you find a deer trail then brush in and wait!
-
Is the whole area covered with Oaks, or do you hunt to find the acorns, and then you have found the deer?
-
This is a mixed hardwood forest. You can scan from the roads to find the trees with leaves. The oaks always drop their leaves last. Once you find that, then you have to sort out the red oaks from the whites. If you find white oaks dropping acorns, then hunt right there. Period!
If you are in the woods and the white oak acorns are gone then they will be hitting the red oaks.
That's a little summary anyway...
-
Anyone seeing any deer that are down there?
-
Pac shot over a bucks back, guys have seen deer but not as many as we were hoping so far, charlie shot a small buck, but the shot was low and we searched lastnight and he searched this morning and never found it. Jimmy had to deer come in and passed on em. I shot 2 squirrels while turkey hunting and found a spot loaded with squirrels and didn't make it back out this morning. I'm getrting a shower droppin some hot peanut butter and eattin some dinner. I'll see what happens tonight if I can get ahold of charlie.
Logan and alex I won't be there till after dark so set your stuff up ass best as possible and we can figure ouyt the rest when I get there.
Later
-
Sounds good, glad guys are getting shots at deer! Alex said something about bringing a tent and heater so you might have your tent to yourself lol I can't wait to get down there!
-
Ok well just let me know.
-
Nightmare today guys. Im driving my 05 Jetta down and wanted a small trailer. I couldnt get a trailer till I got a hitch. I didnt like what was available, so I made my own. I then realised secretary of states wouldnt be open to get plates for the trailer, so I decided on one of those hitch haulers. I realised I cant buy the water proof box, till I have the hauler. I buy that at one store, then go out in the parkinglot to put it on the car. Its there I find I used the wrong size steel tubing on the hitch. ARRRGG! I take it home and modify the brand new carrier. I then go back to a different store and cant get the box I wanted, cause the carrier I bought is 19.25" wide, not 20" like the other ones I looked at. Long story short, the car is packed, but Im gonna get some sleep and head down in the morning. See you guys soon.
-
What a mess! Hopefully all of that pays off for you and you have a good time this week! See you guys later this week!
-
wowsers!
-
So my car is mostly packed. Heading out for a 7p-7a shift at work. Going to vote first thing when I get back, finish checking gear, nap, then head out. Probably be getting there afternoon so I may miss the afternoon hunt but hoping to at least be able to get tent pitched before dark. We still at K? Sounds like you guys are starting to see some action :)
-
Charlie shot a decent sized buck today. It looks like a 3 year old. We are still at K. Can't wait to come back but I'm glad I'm home with my family. I love my new baby girl so much.
-
Looking forward to pictures with the story! :campfire: I should be rolling in on Friday :archer:
-
Come on Charlie, send me some pics! Congrats!!
-
Man Law! :readit:
-
hey bowmofo would there be chance that you would have a chunk of one of those foam targets you had for the squirrel hunt I could use for foam in my quiver.
-
Me and Alex will be down later today!!!
-
I'm not going to be down until later tomorrow, having some issues with the baby and have to go see the doctor. please pass this on if you can to logan or alex in camp so they don't think I'm dead on the road.
-
I will be starting a different thread in a few days with updated pics and stories. There are still guys in camp and I will be back out there Friday. I haven't had time to upload photos and likely won't be able to do so for a few more days.
Running deer tally is 1 miss, 2-4 passsed shots, 1 shot (unrecovered), 1 shot(recovered)
-Charlie
