just saw it awesome
-
That's huge!

Wow, that things is huge. You might want to check the line around your feet before shooting. He's lucky that thing didn't drown him.
-
Bet he would pull good on a cane pole.
-
You could make a suit of armor outta that fish..DANG!

In a word: WOW!
-
Bear Grizzly?
-
Gar can get just plain big & scary! Never shot one near that big but have seen them within arm's reach! Wading the Trinity River is minutes from here.
-
The theory of the existance of monster fish exists no more.
-
a true river monster

WOW!
-
Good Lord...wouldn't want to be in the water with that thing. Amazing!
-
Yikes! :scared:
-
Holy Smokes what a fish!!!!
-
WOW!! Freakin' phenomenal! Can't believe the guy fileted it out before getting it weighed on a bigger scale. I didn't know people ate gar.
-
That is one awesome monster, I think I would have her mounted. What a conversation piece in the man cave.
-
gar are tasty, but its a lot of work to get at the meat.
-
WOW that is a large fish!!!!! no swimming in Texas for me!!!
-
My daughter saw the pic and asked if they were in the river or big lakes. I told her yes and she said she wasn't swimming in there any more.
-
I wonder what the # of bow was and how close he was to get the arrow thru the scales. Regardless awesome bow fish.
-
He's a bigun' for sure!

Back in the 1960's my brother and I were floating the Pearl River below the Barnett Reservoir in Jackson, Mississippi on an afternoon fishing trip. I was chugging a Burke Flex plug on a retrieve and my line just stopped. I kept the pressure up, pulling for all I was worth and as I watched a monster of a gar simply and quietly sounded from the deep with my plug in his mouth and his eye on us in that boat. We were in a 12' john boat and neither of us could believe what we had just witnessed. He released the plug and sank back into the dark water. He was at least 10' long, possibly longer and we still talk about that.
-
Huge :scared:
-
He told in the story the line was wraped around his feet.He grab it with his hand, the fish pulled the line tight and yanked him into the lake. His dog grab him by his pant cuff trying to pull him back in.
-
That's a keeper!
-
Wasn't that in the Corpus Christie River? I saw that today and couldn't believe my eyes. I have known for a while that those BRUTES get GIANT sized down here, but I didn't know they would get that big.
I would love to tangle with one of those monsters with a bow and also with a fishing pole. I've never read or heard of a rig on a fishing pole that you can successfully fish for them though.
Just seeing something like that would cause you to take a deep breath.

I wonder how old a beast like that must be...
WITHOUT a doubt...a WHOLE new category of big fish!
-
B&C Gar for sure!
-
Fantastic!
-
A friend of my wifes posted that on Face Book with the comment.
"Eugene Slagle This totally made me think of you :) "
I replied, I so want to do that.

Many years ago while duck hunting in the Escambia River Swamp area near Pensacola, Florida, I paddled the little 14 foot canoe over to a duck that I had just shot that was still flopping a little. As I just started to reach for it, the water roiled and a huge gar close to the size of this one snapped my duck up and had it for breakfast. It scared the heck out of me and made my little canoe feel puny.

Me too. any way to get an educated guess on how old it is?
-
Now thats what I call a real "River Monster".I'm glad theres nothing like that swimming around up here in Saskatchewan!
-
I bet is 100 years or so. A giant for sure!!!
-
A co worker told me about it today after seeing my Carp picture. She said Prehistoric fish.
I said Alligator Gar, she disagreed with me so I had to look it up. I smiled when I brought up the picture, not only was I right, but the guy was toting a recurve and a skoal can in the front pocket!
I thought his story is one for the books!
Good stuff for sure!
-
That is crazy :clapper:
-
Dam that's a big fish
-
That would make a cool wall mount.
-
As much as I like hunting with my bows, looking at those prehistoric teeth, I would be tempted to shoot the thing in the head with my .33 Winchester before I hauled it in the boat!
-
Did someone shorten the upper limb on that bow 4-5 inches, or is it an optical illusion?
-
According to Ark. Fish and Game, gar meat is edible, but very boney, and the eggs are highly toxic to predators and humans. There are several species of gar and they can live 20 yrs. :nono:
-
I believe this was a female.
Found this on the internet:
"Alligator Gar Life Cycle - Grow slowly and take a long time to mature. Females mature at 11 years old and live up to 50 years. Males mature at age six and live to at least 26 years old."
-
That fish will give me nightmares...wow!
-
That'll skin a few bows...
-
Can't say it enough, WOW that is a huge ugly fish.
-
It looks like it ate something the size of a pig!
-
Cool write up on the story...
