Title: Fun topic.: How do you fund your Hunting and Archery Hobby
Post by: Brianlocal3 on June 24, 2012, 05:53:00 PM
I am an Elevator Constructor, so I build, maintain, and repair elevators, escalators and moving walks. That is my 40 hr job, but those funds are allocated to the household needs. So for hobby money I scrap out the old equipment and do small jobs for people around town. Ill cut grass, change brakes, yard work. Just small jobs to earn some hobby money.  After the kids are older I wont need to but for now, my primary income is used for household needs.
So how do my fellow Gangers fund this neverending passion and hobby.

Just part of my budget. Archery and reading are two of my hobbies. Thankfully reading isn't expensive.

and also the title is a slight play on words with the straight talk meaning what do you do for a living. I dont know why, but I am always interested in what people do for an occupation.

And Bowwild, I am a huge reading nerd myself. I have close to 500 books in my library here at the house, plus the library is just down the street.  I read all genres of books.

Fortunately, we have always had enough income that I could buy the hobby basics plus an occasional extra.  Also, my family has always preferred to give cash in lieu of gifts, so I set that aside for hobby stuff. Latly, I put the change in my pocket into a small bank each night, and when the bank is full it gets cashed in and added to my hobby fund.  Adds up fairly quickly. The secret to saving up for hobby items is to make sure you never blow your entire money stash at a single event - always keep a little bit back for next time.

Nice, yes I do the change thing also. Danny, I was with the USBP for a short while after I got out of the Air Force and that was a good gig.  Plenty to hunt in Arizona and New Mexico.  I want to make a special trip to Artesia and go after some Promghorn.

Sam McMichael,I do the change thing as well. Pennies in 1 bank, everything else in another. I am a auto mechanic by trade,a couple transmission re-builds or busted 4X4's on the side helps out a bunch. I just split it with Mrs. Whitaker.   :bigsmyl:

I'm a full time college student but I still live at home which saves me major costs but I still pay for my ridiculous hunting/flyfishing hobbies by roofing with my dad and tending lawns on my parents duplexes. Thankfully my dad owns the company and pays our men well so that translates into good pay for me.

I've gone full circle. Started out, as a kid, playing in the backyard. Now that I'm retired, most of my time is spent playing in the backyard. Shooting in my back yard keeps me from going any where. Since every time I go any where, it seems to cost me at least $50 before I get back home, I'm making money, hand over fist, by playing in the backyard.

I don't read near as much as I should but I just put aside a little every month like it is a monthly bill. I have not always been able to do that but my only kid is about to be making his own way as he is just about to graduate from college.

Luckily I'm a high school student so the only bills I have are the insurance bills on my old truck. I hang drywall for my uncle during the summer and all of that goes to gas and archery. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

I've worked at the same manufacturing plant for 22 years and done most of the various jobs there. Work has been steady all these years.

I used to sell a gun to buy a new bow but ran out of guns.  We live well within our budget, and as long as I don't go too crazy I have been able to enjoy some new toys now and then.
Out of state hunts are planned for and savings set aside earmarked for the trip.

I also have private clients that I do recoveries and investigations for and also work with horses in my spare time for extra $ ......

After working my crappy dead end warehouse job during the week, I do mechanic work type stuff at home. Most of my hobby money comes from building Toyota truck differentials, building transaxles and engines for aircooled Volkswagens, tuning carburetors on old motorcycles, and welding on busted 4x4s and baja bugs. I'm a cursed tinkerer... The simplicity of traditional archery and primitive living type hobbies are my release.   :)

Spent 39 years working for the State Patrol - retired in December, been playing ever since.  Been building antler candle holders and stuff like that for donations/gifts.  Have had several inquiries asking if I would sell them.  Planned to do that, but so far haven't found the time to work on anything like that.  Winter is coming -- maybe I'll find some time then???

The last 15 years or so I started buying a house, spend some time and money on it then flip it for a profit. Some years, like Africa, it would take 2 houses! It would keep me busy and if I made a couple grand it was worth the time and effort.
Since the market has fallen, I've switched to farm tractors. Buy them for cheap, fix 'em, paint 'em and resell 'em. I've sold 3 this year and have $4k in the sock drawer with no place to go. Didn't draw any tags 8-(
Looks like I'll be planning a BIG trip for next year!

There's things I could do and have done, like taxidermy work and building traditional flintlocks, but am too sorry to do...so I just suffer and do without everything else.

I don't really have any vices other than hunting and the kids are semi on their own.  It's fairly cheap to hunt a Louisiana lease if you don't include the beer we drink.  Bottom line is that my wife knows it is my passion and she is supportive of my hobby.

1948 Ferguson T20 I almost kept this one! If I'd have drawn Iowa, this tractor would have given me 2-3 weeks in paradise!
I work on these between 5am and 7am, 5 days a week. The morning news just makes me cranky so I fund my bowhunting with those 2 hrs.

I own a boarding kennel & dog grooming parlor (yes, really.) Somehow after I've paid for all the staff, bills, taxes, accountant, lawyer, supplies etc.... each month, there seems to be just enough left over for me to pay myself about 1/3rd of minimum wage (although I'm usually to tired to spend it) to pay for my hobbies!

I've done logging and landclearing for going on 22 years now, hope I can make it to 23 with the way the economy is!!!
I've collected enough "toys" along the way that I can usually sell/buy or trade for more without taking too much money out of pocket. That really helps now,as my oldest is in college.Good news is I have 9 years to save up until the next daughter goes.
Hey Biggie,here's my tractor-

One more detail on saving the pocket change. Sometimes I "manufacture" change. Say I buy some thing that costs $1.03. I will pay for it with $2.00 even if I already have the 3 cents. This may be cheating a bit, but it works, and so far, I have gotten away with it.

I still sneak quite a few items into the house just so nobody realizes how successfull I've been.

I give 50 hours a week to a rental company where we rent anything from a sledgehammer to 30 thousand pound excavators to john q public..... which is quite fun sometimes. And on the weekends for my fun money I'm a archery associate at bass pro shops in the archery department of course.

I make my own bows so I don't have a huge expense in custom bows.

A job that pays very well, no kids, no car payments (drive an old Suburban with 250K miles on it), NYC rental property, huge coin jar like some of the other folks (I've paid for hunts and vacations with that jar when it's too full to move!) and basically being frugal.

My wife reads my posts from time to time so you'll only see the official way.  I get to expense mileage when I drive my vehicle to secondary locations at work.  I carefully calculate my costs and anything I get back I split with the Mrs.

Hunting is my primary hobby so it gets paid first.

I'm retired so the SS, and pension go to pay bills but I work part time delivering catered food. The salary (if you can call it that) and tips are saved to pay for my day to day expenses and all hunting, golf and fishing trips. Also have a large gun collection and accumulation of junk so I sell that off piece by peice.
