Title: what color feather stands out the most?
Post by: mountain lion on July 06, 2012, 10:22:00 PM
in your opinion, what is the best color that stands out the most? whether its low light, or high noon etc. to me, its either pink or yellow. but to me, in low light, pink almost seems to vanish. what do you think?

Chartreuse/flo. yellow/flo. lime, whatever ever you want to use.  That type stands out pretty good for me in low light.

Pink or red for me...

But blue will guarantee me not losing an arrow in the woods.

I sent a 2 red 1 black combo tapered cedar shaft into the pre-sunset brush this evening. It's still out there...
Now, the post sunset missed shots into the pasture with the  3 fletched chartruse feathered arrows were all found.
You do the math...   ;)

White cap dip, chartruese feathers (lime green), and a white nock.  They glow!

Chartreuse/Flo yellow with a white crown and clear flo yellow nock is the most visible for me.  Lots of colors show up well during good light, but the chart really shows its colors in low light.  All white is probably a close second for me.

I've been using 3 pink feathers with a white wrap and flo green nock. Works great for 3d haven't lost an arrow yet and I miss a lot! I also like 3 charturuese with white wrap and flo orange nock. Different feather manufacturers have different ideas for charturese. I like Gateway Charturese and AMG Pink. Both really bright.

For me - chartreuse/flo. yellow/hot pink/white

Then again, in very low light, flo. yellow/chartreuse seem the best.  Under most daytime conditions, nothing stands out like hot pink!  Not many duplicates of that color in the woods!

Under VERY low light conditions (ie: dark), nothing helps you find an arrow faster (even when covered in blood) than reflective wraps.  They add extra weight to the back end of the shaft, but sure are easy to find with a flashlight!

I agree with what the other people say.  For my as far as My hunting arrows, I like a purple stained shaft, a khaki crown, with pink hen feathers and flo yellow cock feather and nock.  I find that during the fall, there is not pink flowers so helps stand out with the purple too.  I put a little strip of reflective tape below my nock (i get from box store).

If you have one of those blue LED lights that are supposed to be good for bloodtrailing, they will make chartreuse fletching almost glow at night. I don't find them to be all that great for seeing blood (to my eyes), but they are helpful for finding arrows after dark. I have one of the inexpensive PAL lights in blue LED:  http://www.theledlight.com/palights.html

"Chartreuse" or "Flouresent yellow" looks like they glow after the sun settles...It's good to know where you hit the animal and you can see just where the arrow entered...Put on a reflective cap wrap from a sponsor such as "Onestringer" and when you follow up on a hit at night with a light source I bet you find your animal a lot easier...You can get reflective wraps in various colors if you don't like white...Those combo's will help in any recovery of your game you are hunting....

White wraps with flo chartreuse, flo lime green, flo orange, or flo hot pink.  The flo colors do seem to glow for about the last half hour of daylight.

The eye is most sensitive to yellowish green at 550nm. The more reflective/intensity(bright) that color is even better. White reflects light the best at 80%. Black the worst at 5%.
You have seen the bright yellow green vests road crews and crossing guards use. There is a reason.
Night vision goggles almost use a yellow green technology.

I think my Fl. Orange and Fl. Pink feathers stand out more to me than some of the Chartreuse that Ive done in the past. I thought the Chartreuse blended in a little to much with the fall leaves on the ground compared to the Fl. Pink and Fl. Orange. BTW, I use Trueflight feathers and solid colored Onestringer wraps( same color as my feathers on each shaft...i.i the last 7" of my arrow is 1 solid color...Fl. Pink or Fl. Orange). It makes the arrows flight and exact impact spot pretty easy to see.

I use Fl yellow/chartreuse pretty much exclusively.  I am experimenting with luminous paint between the nock and the feather (glows in the dark after only a few minutes in the sun).  I've also made some arrows with highly reflective tape you buy to put on trailers, signs, etc.

I've never liked the glow in the dark- jump out at you bright colors. I'm sure they work great, I just dont like the super brightness of them.
Always been a standard yellow guy myself!
Whoops, I just saw the question was what stands out the most...not what I personally like. I stand corrected.

What color stands out the most depends at least partly on the environment and on what we mean by "stand out."  If we mean during arrow flight, then flourescent yellow/chartuese works well for me (although bright blue is a close second), like many others.  If on the other hand we mean what stands out the most when trying to find an arrow on the ground, while stump shooting for example, blue works quite well, mostly because there are few blue "things" in the natural environment. Although I know this, I do not like  blue fletching, however - they are just too unnatural!

Standing out the best AFTER the shot when the arrow is at rest depends a lot on the background the arrow is in.

Standing out the best in flight…..that is another ballgame.

I have done a bunch of testing on the later with both human perception in realtime and HD video footage.

I used every flo color available, including matching wraps and nocks when possible. Shot the arrows into light and dark targets, into heavily shaded area`s and into bright sunlight area`s.

Both the group of human observers and the video came to one conclusion……

When an arrow is in flight, regardless of lighting conditions, all white is the winner.

Surprisingly, flo orange performed very poorly in this test. A bunch of the guys on hand thought that orange would do well.

While I do not recall the order of every color tested, i do remember that chartreuse came in second.

BTW, even when slowing down the HD footage, I had to get down to 5% of realtime speed before it became less obvious which color was the most easily trackable to the human eye.

I did this testing nearly 10 years ago when I was still shooting wheel bows and was videoing all of my hunts. I wanted the best color to see arrow flight on tape without using a lighted nock.

All arrows used in the test were exactly the same except for the color of the nock, wrap, and 5" feathers.

I remember reading in a Trad bowhunter mag. that blue is one of the only colors not naturally found on the ground (or something like that) therefore, it's supposed to be the best for finding lost arrows. YMMV I guess. I like it. But I also like orange just cause it's my favorite color...

These are very easy to see.  I built 3 like it for squirrel hunting to cut down on arrow-searching time and increase hunting time.  I can easily track them through flight and they stick out like a pack of Highlighters when they come to a stop.

My take on the seeing the arrow best was based on finding it not seeing it in flight.  Seeing it in flight is nice, but it goes where it goes.  After that I want to find it.  I would for sure say chartreuse for in flight with a florescent green or a white nock.  Orange works great when you need to find it on the ground, but I do not think it is any better than some other colors in flight. Been eyeing some of the florescent blue feathers.  May have to give them a try for stummping and targets this year.
