Ive been hunting a 70 acer piece of open hardwoods for about 12 or so years now and just about have it figured out pretty good. I was in there in mid September, scouting. Things looked good. Well, I haven't had a chance to get in there sice this morning. Sandy hit it pretty hard. There had to have been more than 100 large oak that we're up rooted. Every major trail had multiple trees blocking them. I didn't see anything this morning, but I looked around some and there are some real nice funnels now. I think that it my be better than before. Theres much more cover and again, more funnels. I'll be back in there Saturday for sure!

Good luck Sean, those downed trees can sometimes make nice ground blinds too.

Sounds like a good area for some action...good luck!

And the best part it's it should just keep getting better. Give it 3-5 years and the new undergrowth will make that a deer haven!

Good luck!!

Thanks, I'll be back in there this week. I figure that its going to even going to take the deer awhile to really figure it out as well, its that messy in there! I think that it made the woods alittle better by adding cover that wasnt there before and really funneling the deer.

Sandy just turned your oak pantry into a bedroom. this might become prime bedding area. be smart, watch the wind and get a plan. keep us posted!!

Pete, thats what I'm banking on. It was a mature open wood lot with mostly red and white oaks with a few maples and beach mixed in. when the acorns were dropping, I would see deer all day and bucks would be cruising, but with nothing holding them there. in a few years there should be some good browse.

yep, they love to bed in the blowdowns especially if they are high on the hill. Stay back and watch them for a couple days if you ahve time, then move in.
Good luck
