Title: to Tuck or Not..??
Post by: Billy on December 30, 2012, 07:50:00 PM
OK..sounds weird as a topic but...

I wear Muck boots and generally tuck my wool pant legs in the uppers.

Question(s)

Could the wrap and tuck, actually restrict enough blood to cause cold(er) feet?

Do any of you use leg gaiters with any success?

One more day (tomorrow) and my deer season will end...Congrats to the Lucky/Good hunters and Good Luck to those not yet tagged.

You're right.  That is weird!

I'd say yes, you could cause circulation issues.  Probably take a lot though.  I hunted Parke County all day yesterday.  It was gorgeous in the snow.  No deer were harmed though.  I'll hunt one more time next weekend to wrap up the season.  Good luck tomorrow.

Happy New Year!

Thanks for the good wishes .. Same to you.

Just a thought(lack of) I had as I SAT still for three hours yesterday morning...

No Darren, my neck gaiter is not THAT tight...   :wavey:

If when you remove your boots and pants and see an indentation from the pants that indents 1/8th to 1/4 of an inch then yes, but chances of them restricting the circulation is slim. You would end up with numbness and swollen feet due to the blood not being able to be pumped back up to the lungs if they did restrict the flow.

I've been wearing Kamick boots for probably close to 20 years now. They have a built in gaiters at the top.I tuck my pant legs in and cinch the gaiter strings up very tight. I crushed one of my feet/ankles in a logging accident. That foot is really sensitive to the cold. I wear silk socks, merino wool socks and a polypro over sock liner inside the Kamiks with the gaiters tied up tight, keeps my feet warm.A big thing is to make sure the boots are big enough to not be tight and leave air space with the socks and liners on.

I wear Muck boots woody max.  Can't tuck in anything.  They're tight on my legs with a pair of long johns.  Pants must go on the outside.

I tuck. Bought my Mucks a size or so big. I did wear  2 pair of 30% wool socks and got cold at times. Now I wear one pair of 90% wool and have toasty feet with the dead air in between. Seems the tucked pants seal at my calves better.

I leave my pants (or bib legs) outside.  If the snow is over a foot deep I wear gators.

I use the neoprene bands with velcro from Cabelas to wrap my pant legs before slipping into my Muck boots or waders. Obviously if yours are too tight don't tuck.

Depends what I'm in.
If walking through a marsh or warm weather...tucked. If it's cold and I have an under layer then untucked.

A number of years ago, I had a 5" wide elastic fabric sewn onto the ends of my DayOne Fleece pant legs. The elastic gets tucked and the pant stays out of the boot top. A nice fit that keeps the pant leg in place.
With my wool pants, I wear them outside the boot as that would be too tight. Can't find that 5" elastic fabric anymore or I'd do that to the wool too.
That being said, I find on occasion that under brush  makes a scraping sound on my Lacrosse Burleys with the tucked pant, but the wool hanging out muffles that noise. Fleece or wool gaiters may be the best solution.

No tuck here.  I'd rather have wet cuffs than cold feet.
