Title: NEW! Need help with Setup
Post by: marahat on February 01, 2013, 10:45:00 AM
Hello. I just pulled out my old recurve. It's a 47#  62" Dan Quillen and I want to get it ready to hunt with by next fall. Apparenty the arrows I have spine out a little stiff. I have 2413's (xx78 superslam). I was told that a 2016 is probably the best arrow to shoot. I plan to go to at least 470 grains on the arrow, if not higher. And have at least a 125 grain broadhead. Does all this sound correct? Oh yeah, my draw length on my mathews compound is 29. Not sure what it is on my recurve...

There is several thread on here that can help with tuning. I do know that your draw with a compound will be a little different with a traditional bow.

Personally..I disagree with anyone that says any Al arrow is the best these days. I only see disadvantages with them compared to other available materials.

If you like em..more power to ya..and shoot till your heart's content buddy. Individual choice is paramount here.

but I truly feel the best choices are wood for beauty and nostalgia or carbon for no fuss durability, straightness, and ease of tuning.

I've shot wood since day 1.
Just last season I switched to carbon to give em a try....lovin it! not as pretty but everything else is better.

FYI I shoot a 45# whip@28"
using a beman bowhunters (cheapest carbon I could find) 500 spine shaft full length and a 175 grain tip I was at 450 grain.
Those arrows were tuned great for me.

Just for fun I screwed on some 300 grain tips.
Those carbons STILL fly great..little more arc of course..but straight and true.

Really surprised me. Heard carbons were very forgiving of tip weight..but I had know idea.

Just have fun!

John

Hey Mark,First of all welcome aboard, you won't find better people and more willing to help than here.Like coach said your draw length will be differant with your recurve, probably 1-11/2",at least.Yes your 2413's are way overspined .2016's or 2114 would be good.My 2016's(xx78) at 28" with 3 5" shield feathers and a 125gr. piont weigh a tad under 480 gr.You could even go higher in piont weight, even up to 160 gr. for more FOC and total arrow weight.Your arrows will have enough spine to overcome that.
If you can get to some of the Trad shoots there will be many there that will steer you and get you set up right.Any of G.Fred Asbells shooting books are exellent resources.Best of luck my friend and keep us posted.
