Title: Michigan Longbow Association Heading West...The Hunt is COMPLETE, and Successful
Post by: Mike Vines on June 22, 2013, 06:00:00 PM
A good friend, Roger Norris, and I put in for Mule Deer tags in Wyoming, and just found out today that we were drawn so we will be representing the MLA on our excursion to the "Cowboy State".  We have been haphazardly planning in anticipation, but now the Adventure really begins.  All the "getting in shape" and shooting practice we have been doing will hopefully pay dividends in a little over 2 months.

For those of you NONresidents who are still waiting till 25 June (like I was), the results are already out (thanks for the tip Steve O).  You all probably already knew this, and I'm just late to the game. LOL

Congrats Mike.  I have been accumulating points in WY for both Deer and Elk to one day hunt there...just got to pick the year. Almost went this year but ran out of time trying to figure out where to Elk hunt. Maybe 2014 since AK Moose is pushed back to 2015.

Mike and I are going to give it our best shot.....he is a darn good planner, has the map details all worked out. We are both "ex" Army MP's....so we will have plenty to BS about on the 30 hour drive

Stay tuned!!

I've never been to Wyoming, so the first thing I need to do is find out about what type rock is available to be knapped.  I plan on returning with as much as the Tahoe can hold.  I know of at lease 3 youngins who could put it to use.

From that day forward I have laminated every aerial photo I have of hunting spots.  I'm laughing about that as I'm writing this.  Blew me away what that hummus did to the ink.

Bowhunted the Bighorns last year. It's beautiful country. You'll have a great time. Wish I was going along. Roger is a fine fella to ride the river with. We've shot arrows and hunted whitetails and rabbits together. He's a heck of a good shooter and I'd say those muleys are in a heap of trouble if they let him get within range. G. Fred Asbell

I can't wait to see the stories on this one. Mike, you drive on the way back and let Roger use the 30 hours and his mobile technology to post the story on the way back.      ;)

Roger is as good as they come in camp-heck, I'd invite him before I invited myself.

When Roger said he was taking time out from the Shrewhaven gang hunt to do other things I knew I'd miss him, but he said he wanted to do some of these out west hunts while he still could (Idaho last year, Wyoming this year).

We're pulling for you buddy. The only question is will it be a Northern Mist or a Super Shrew in his hands??   ;)

As much as I love my Shrew bows Ray, it's going to be the "Big Green" Northern Mist this fall. I'm shooting it as good as I can shoot a bow right now.

Lots of good guys posting up here....thanks for all of the "good luck".

You are correct Roger.  There are some great guys chiming in here.  It gets the positive Mojo flowing on the adventure.

Speaking of bows, I will be hunting with my Tall Tines longbow and wood arrows.  My Two Tracks Ambush will be coming along as a "just in-case" backup.

Roger, I'm just yanking your chain a little. I had a pretty good hunch that the Northern Mist was the go to.  I had a chance to chat with Steve Turay for about 5 minutes at the Michigan Traditional Bowhunters Jamboree on Saturday. Of course I would have liked to have sat around the campfire with Steve all night like we used to do.  Steve says he can hardly take a stock bow to a shoot any more because he's so busy and he was just there at the shoot to visit. Of course G. Fred's excellent article in TBM and Steve's long awaited recognition probably had something to do with it.

Fred and I were joking about that article at Compton...."Wouldn't it be funny if that article made him so busy he went out of business?"    :bigsmyl:

Not really....Steve Turay was well established and on the map before GFA wrote about him. He is one of our great bowyers, 20+ years into it.

Chuck, that's awesome, good luck up there. I mentioned in your other thread, Steve Osminsky is someone to talk too....

I love this time of year. The planning is underway, the practice is FOR REAL, and hope is in the air!!

Roger,

I'm going to bring the map tube to lunch on Thursday.  Inside with the maps is all my notes from the talks I had with the Biologist and Game Warden for the area.  Keep them for a couple weeks, and by then the other maps should be near completion.

OK boys, here is a teaser pic. We just got in from camping and this is the view I had to put up with in the Bighorns. Don't know where you are going to be hunting, but this is the type of place that holds a few deer and elk, not to mention trout. Enjoy your time in our great state, and if I can be of assistance, feel free to holler at me.

I can't believe how squared away Mike is with regards to planning this hunt. Everyday I get a text or email with something simple yet brilliant. Today he was tweaking out his pack list a bit, he called me to check out redundant "stuff". Awesome.

For my prep today, I did 30 minutes on the stairs, and then went immediately to shooting my bow while I was panting and heaving. Big fun...

Roger and Mike, you guys are smart to get in shape for the hunt. I don't know what elevation you'll be hunting at but I know the first time I went west many years ago I was a smoker and the thinner air where I hunted, just about did me in...    :deadhorse:   In hunts after that I had quit smoking and before every trip I built up my legs by jogging every day with a heavy backpack (they didn't have Stair Masters back then)....it paid off.

I didn't know you were a runner Ron.  When did you quit?  3rd or 4th step???

All I'm doing right now is Legs and Lungs.  It's better to over prepare then to under prepare.

Here is my July time challenge...Do this for time on the 1st and then on the 31st of July.

50 squats
25 crunches
15 burpies

My time was 3 minutes 49.4 seconds.  (Plenty of room for improvement)

I thought I was doing good in the lung department, but I was sucking air like a fat kid does eating cake.

I'm interested after training harder for a month what my time will be on the 31st.

Anybody else wanna try this with me.  No prizes, not even bragging rights.  All your going to get out of this is healthier.

Get on the bike and  ride the hilliest areas you can find.  It will build your lungs and it is easier on your knees.

And, don't forget the hard candy for altitude sickness if it comes on.

Keep an eye out on the eastern slope of any hill or mountain that is near a creek. ARROWHEADS

Have a good time!

I know my past with keys, so Roger having a set is going to be a pretty good idea.  Sledge or no Sledge.

Long story short...My truck idled on the boat launch to the St. Clair River for about 2 hrs during the peak of Walleye season holding up the rest of the boat launchers while my boat and trailer were in the water and keys for the truck were safely locked inside the  RUNNING  truck.

Good luck guys, I'm expecting a good story or two out of this adventure.

Roger, I'm putting the blame on Ron for the key incident.  Had he had them labeled and color coded like your Grrr-animals hunting clothes are, there wouldn't have been any need for the sledge.  Of course, we could always mention the word combination of 'canoe' and 'Armstrong Creek' if we want to cast a few pebbles inside of glass walled cabins.     ;)      :p

I think G.Fred talked about it in one of his TBM columns a few years ago.  How great is it that the preparation and anticipation of the hunt or the trip adds to the length of time we're actually enjoying our hunt experience.

Ron LaClair was just up north here visiting for a few days and of course there was bow shooting, good food and talk of the upcoming work bee next month and hunt week at camp a month after that.  The excitement for the Shrewhaven hunt is building and so all of us understand and feel your anticipation.  Good luck guys, be safe and make some memories.

The keys weren't the problem. Ron gave me easy access to a sledge hammer and a locked gate. It was his fault.
I gave Roger a ring of keys, on one of them was marked, "E Gate" for east gate. Roger came back and said none of the keys fit. I thought the lock had been changed so I gave him a sledge hammer and told him to knock it off.    :scared:  and a little embarrassed    :o . So, that's how SLEDGE got his nickname   :D

We are now headed home on a 24+ hour drive and will finish the story once we get some well deserved time with our lovely families first (Priorities 1st).

I will say that there are 2 less Mule Deer in the State of Wyoming due to the lethality of the Michigan Longbow Association members.

WAHOO, we just made it to Iowa.  Roger being the ever watchful mentor that he is says that me being jacked up on Mountain Dew is funny to experience, but is fearful the "Buzz" would wear off while driving.  Little does he know I just killed the biggest critter of my life and this "High" ain't going away.

So, I guess I just gave another little hint as to what is to come, but we are still 12 hrs from home and my awesome camp mate is wanting some rest.  Well, I have the weekend off and the only thing on my agenda is spending time with my wife and kids, so Roger is absolutely correct.  Take it slow and make sure we get there in one piece.

If you ever get to share a camp with Roger, you had better not hesitate the opportunity.

Have no fear, pics will be coming along with a quick explanation of our over flowing coolers.

What an adventure the last week has been...

There was a closer than I wanted and unexpected encounter with a MASSIVE cow moose at spitting distance.  Who would have known they share the same wilderness as Mule Deer?   That very same evening, Roger had a moose encounter of his own that he can explain, but it made for a VERY interesting campfire tale.  A couple mornings later when walking in, just as we were getting ready to split up a little after 5AM, another Moose was standing on the same path we wanted to go, and in pitch black darkness, the pucker factor at that moment was indescribable.  A slow and steady retreat had me under the nearest log, and Roger heading south down a prominant cow trail .  Whole different experience for this Michigan Boy.  As the morning started to bring the woods to life, the moose decided to walk past my holed up spot and just gave me that look of "You owe me some money".  I have never felt so small in my life and wanting somehow to get smaller.  This is the kind of adventure I have only dreamed about.  It only gets better from here on out.

More to come in a while.  Thanks for bearing with us as we make the trek back East.  Now I know why the people who headed West didn't come back.  It's to damn beautiful.

Heres a pic of the doe I killed Thursday night. mike just dropped me off. He has MUCH better pictures to share!

It was a 10 yard shot, slightly uphill,  I was on my knees. My NM Baraga finally made meat! I was shooting Axis 500 carbons with Vintage single bevel heads. It was a complete pass thru, and the arrow was stuck deeply into a stump on the other side.

That last part was important....om Tuesday a.m I mmmmmmissed a whopper, 6 points on his left antler...

It happened Izzy. Here is the upset cow, after i backed into the timber, and she decided to go around. I was preparing to stalk a mule deer, and moved from the timber, heading 2 draws over. I looked to my left, and thought, "Wow, what a cute calf".....then I looked to my right to see upset Mom. I scurried back into the timber until she calmed down.

Mike's a little bushed and very happy to be back to his family, a hot shower, and a soft bed. He asked me to post this picture and blurb on his behalf:

"Hero shot of my 4x4 Wyoming Mule Deer. Long story short...hunt included a 1/2 mile sprint thru deadfalls headstrong into the timber the moose came from before. I let eleven does pass along with two 2x2's in velvet. Picked my spot at 30 yards, I honestly do not remember drawing reaching anchor or the release. Shot was from the ground at 13 FEET, all I remember seeing is my white nock hitting exactly what I was focused on. Double lung, busted arrow and 250# of awesomeness before me. I have experienced ground shrinkage before, but this one just kept getting bigger the closer I got."

Looks like we'll all need to wait a while more to hear the long version of his story.    :campfire:

Alright, I have had my 3 hrs of sleep for this week now, and the skull is just about boiled out, so I can now fill you in about the Frying Pan. I sat in this ground blind I hastidly made up, and the "Banana Hammock" stool I brought, cut off ALL blood flow from my tail bone down, but it was to good of a spot to skip and nothing else to sit on (I will resort to my knees or bottom as a last resort {NO JOKES about my POOR choice of words, I'm TALKING HUNTING here). I decided I needed something to relieve the pain. So I spent untold hours sitting on top of this here Frying Pan and watched at least a dozen different bucks and quite a few does from it, some were less than 10 feet, just no shot opportunities and I wasn't about to rush anything. Roger thought it was flat out hilarious that I would even consider the thought of sitting on a frying pan to hunt deer. I like to Improvise, Adapt and Overcome any and all obstacles, and some of my ideas (read that as MOST of my ideas) only make sense to me. So here was just one way I was able to make Roger smile on this hunting trip. Believe me when I say, I had him laughing at quite a few things I did.

Mike it makes all sorts of sense to me to sit on a camp frying pan that is that clean...next time maybe you could try using it to cook with...good to see you both got deer and you got a nice buck...you obviously sorted out a new hunting situation very quickly...the Bush Baby Bow is ready for a mulie doe any day now...I was going to hunt with a different bow this year but it simply will not allow it...then after that I will have to decide which way to turn...I could still shoot another Mulie, a whitetail and an elk within about a half hour of my house

First I would like to thank everybody for the kind words and positive Mojo that was sent our way.  We had an absolute blast doing this hunt and I am in the process of writing an article for Trad Archers' World (A Sponsor of Trad Gang) and the deadline is quickly approaching, September 15th.  I'm hoping it gets accepted and you can read about it in there.

Now to show you how I spent my day.  I have never done a Euro Mount before and decided I would do it on this head.  Here is what a few hours and some improvised tools can get you.  I didn't screw the arrowhead plaque to it yet.  I want to wait till it dries.

Here you go IZZY.  I took this picture after this moose decided to just walk off after appearing out of nowhere and stood just a few yards from me.  It took me a few to get my camera out of the pack and focused in after the shock had worn off after what just happened.  Simply amazing how something so BIG can make such little noise when they want to.

Yes it is.  I walked 1/2 mile out to the main road and waited about 45 minutes for a vehicle to pass, Why would I do that?  I'm from Michigan, and I flat out refuse to leave anything laying around outside.  Too many things can happen, coyotes, bears, wolves or someone even just by chance driving by and because I physically could not lift this brute of a deer up into the back of the Hitch Haul I had on the Tahoe.  So I decided to leave the buck at the truck and head off on the quads god gave me.

I flagged down the 1st truck to pass and had a nice chat from a distance.  I couldn't ride back to my truck with him (Who could blame him, here is a guy, covered in blood from the elbows down, some on my pants, camo face paint and still on an adrenalin rush).  His reason..."My dog is up front".

I'm not gonna argue with a guy willing to help, so I kindly said "Yes Sir.  I will be right there in a few minutes".  He drove down to my truck as I ran along singing the Survivor song "Eye of the Tiger" as if I was making my own Rocky movie (I think that would make it Rocky 38 by now).

I was so thankful for his help.  We shook hands, said our goodbye's and we both moved on.  Who would have ever thought it was such a small world.

Lunch today...Backstraps done similar to Monty Browning's.  There is only about 6 people in our shop of about 30 that hunt, but everyone was lined up to sample some of this.  Glad I got the 3rd bite, or I would have missed out on some awesome eats...

Congratulations guy's and thanks for taking us along on your hunt. Mike I don't think you could have had a better hunting partner. I was fortunate enough to share in a Idaho Elk hunt / camp with Roger last year and he has to be one of the finest guys I have ever hunted with! Hopefully we get a chance totry it again some day. Hey Roger how about some Mulie stew at Compton?    :bigsmyl:    Nice shootn guy's.

Good eyes you have there.  Yes, it is a Kifaru "Late Season" G2.  Best pack I have owned.  Sold my Kifaru Spike Camp to help fund the purchase of this one.  I see no need to own anything else.
