I've been relying on a hat and burnt cork, but I like the convenience and cleanliness of a face mask.
Do you prefer mesh or solid? What brand? Pics or links would be helpful. Looking for something to use in warm weather.
Thanks in advance.
-
I will be watching this. I hate putting paint on my face.
-
I'm going to try the spandoflag mask- think Wing.com has them for $5
-
I have a primos that is like a spandex 3/4 size top is open fits snug
-
Early season I wear a mesh thing that I bought at wally world for about a buck. There are probably 5 of them laying around my house. I wear that under a stocking cap. I also have a scentlok hood that I like fine except the bill touches my string when I shoot and even though it's flexible it bothers me to no end. This year I think I'm going to get a Kuiu stocking cap and neck gaitor for year round. They are merino wool and run about $40 bucks for the pair. If you are looking for cheap though and something for the warm weather there in texas go get a head net from walmarts sporting goods section.
-
I use the camo "buff" brand.
I love it. Very versatile.
-
One never agreed with me. Gets kinda of messy with tobacco juice, so I stick with paint. One of my buddies wears a "buff" and speaks highly of it.
-
Early season I wear paint. when it gets colder, I wear a fleece mask & head cover.
-
Spandoflauge... Stays put. I almost forget its there. Does a great job!
-
I sweat easily, and don't care for face paint for that reason. I have a number of different face masks around. Some mesh, some fleece for cold weather, and some in between. If I'm moving I generally will tuck it up under my hat and pull it down if I get into game.
-
I like the 3/4 bandito mask. Has a wire ring that adjusts over the nose. It slides down around the nick if I want to do something, then slips back up quick. Wrap the elastic around the back of my cap and it stays secure. I never notice an issue when I draw and hit anchor.
-
I use a cheap mesh full mask for Cabelas for most of the year here. Also helps the the Mosquitos.
-
Number one is face paint - Hunters Speciality is the only one I will use any more. Stays on all day even when sweating and comes off readily with a bit of soap and water. I am more likely to paint up when elk hunting as I walk more and don't want to have to worry about putting on a face mask when I see an animal.
Around home for only a couple hour hunt I'll use a 3/4 face mask I got at Cabelas. Fits fairly tight and is quite comfortable. I have used the loose fitting face covers but always worry about the string interference. My Spandoflage is in a drawer someplace and I haven't felt the need to look for it in 10 years - never liked it.
-
Spandoflage for me. I like the 3/4 style.
-
Face paint all day! Never cared for the mask. Even when im chasin thunder chickens i wear paint.
-
3/4 mask for me.
-
Spandoflage is my favorite!
-
I only wear one for turkeys and early season deer.I finaly found one that doesn't get in the way when I shoot and doesn't make my glasses fog. I bought 2 because I seems like when I find something that I like, they quit making it!!!
Kept the tag in my gun safe too,in case I have to find another.

Like Gator 1 I use the primos brand that fits tight against my face. It has a cut out for the mouth and eyes. Finding your anchor and getting good string clearance is easy. I use the full version, but they make a 3/4 too. Actually, I like both, but I lost the 3/4. :knothead:
-
Same here but I use the 3/4 primos face mask.
-
Facial hair!
-
I believe Ive tried EVERYTHING in regards to face camo.....the best thing Ive found by far for an actual "mask" is the KUIU merrino neck gator they sell....its super thin and can be worn in warm or cold weather. You buy the merrino hat with it, put the hat on first, then pull the gator down over it....and it makes a perfect balaclava type deal! Great under a baseball cap or wool hat/watch cap type. I just pull it over my head and once its in place, you can either pull it up over your nose for more coverage, or pull it up over your upper lip....for a little more free breathing. This thing rolls/folds up smaller than a golf ball, so you can tuck it in any pocket. And its merrino....easy to clean and keep the stink off. Its worth every penny!

They are a sponsor here....check out the above!

I've tried lots of different masks of one sort or another.
elastics, mouth/chin/nose/wraps, full face mask, even those loose fitting leafy deals with the bendy wire oval "hole" with the pull tight string.
Never found one I liked.
Either in just comfort or convenience.
Also, try as I might, I didn't like the way it changed how my anchor felt.
So, the best I've found is carbomask, or cork.
These don't stay on that well in the heavy rain..but wearing a soaking wet mask isn't my idea of a good time either..lol
-
BURNT CORK! cheap and easy.
-
This ASAT is my favorite..or was, made the same ole mistake I've made many times before..put it in my front cargo pocket and didn't button the flap. Those limbs and brairs can reach right in my pockets.
The mask is real thin and the bill (shorter than the picture looks and real thin and pliable) comes in handy if sun gets in my eyes.
I don't wear it down most of the time, just wad it up and push back on top of my head till I see game.
Winter time I wear it over warmer face masks.
Gotta order another one.

Spando flage
a thing called a recon wrap from Spec Ops Brand
In colder weather a neck gaitor and recon wrap
-
"Buff" for me. Very comfortable and durable.
-
Another vote for camo Buff.
-
I really like the poly one predator camo make, light, feel anchor, stays in place and not to bed in cold or warm weather.
-
kuiu neck gaiter
-
I got the merino wool mask from 3R. VERY nice design and not baggy at all
-
i hate face masks. i usually dont wear one unless i am on the ground.
-
I have been using one of the Under Armour hinged facemasks lately. I have one in camo and one in black. I like it because I can lower the bottom part under my chin at the moment of truth and still find anchor easily.
D.P.
-
Fred bear never wore a mask hahaha. I don't like them but I will wear a ski style mask when its really cold. Try and keep the sun out of your face and you will be fine.
-
carbo mask
or paint
cant hack the mesh in face.
-
Seriously, you guys who hate mesh face masks need to try spandoflauge. I hate having stuff on my face but this thing nearly disappears. You barely notice it's there! It moves with you and you can still feel your anchor.
-
I settled on one sold by Cover Up Products. Large opening for the eyes, nose bridge to prevent the head net from sliding back and forth. This is my deer hunting mask. For Bear hunting, full face mask from Netcraft which has a large black mono see through with clear vision.
-
Can you imagine Howard Hill or Fred Bear or any of 1,000s of traditional hunters being caught in a face mask? This is an amazing thread for a trad site.

Tell us how you really feel, haha
I wish I was tan, but I'm pretty pale. This face needs some cover when hunting on the ground.
I wear a Fred Bear style hat if that makes you feel any better.
-
No big deal. Wear what you want. The decades I've been in the woods I have never even considered a mask. And consider them up to this moment purely a creation of marketing. Face paint perhaps makes some sense, although as a white guy myself I've never felt "outed" by an animal because of my skin color. I've been seen because I moved, stupidly. Or the wind suddenly shifted and scent hit the deer. But face masks because of your face color? Clothing/camo companies love ya!
-
I where the face mask with eye hole. It also helps with the skeeters.

Yep, no biggie....They cost about $5.
-
I wear glasses, so most face masks end up causing problems for me (especially cold weather).
I asked a similar question last year and was recommended carbomask paint by multiple people.
I have to say, it is, far and away, the best paint I've ever used. So easy to remove its really unbelievable. Couple of baby wipes is all that's needed.
-
burnt cork and a beard
-
When your a ground hunter you need all the advantages camo has to offer. I use face paint and a mask but I find the face mask hides the facial outline much better than face paint. Unless you camo your neck up to your brow.
There's more pressure on deer today than back in the day of Bear or Hill. Don't believe me, come hunt Jersey and see how jittery these whitetails are. My friend "Woodie" Greene using a face mask when hunting from his tree stand and when he's on the ground....and he's black.
Again, from the ground, I'm looking for anything to give me the edge.
-
I have no idea what brand name I have, but I bought several hooded masks in light weight fabric. I use these all season unless the temp gets really low. Then I use a fleece hooded mask. I have been using this type face camo for many years. Paint is just messier than I want to fool with. Also, when I sweat a little bit commercial paint seems to get shiny.
-
Absolutely Cabelas Rino skin full head covering. Wash it regularly with baking soda and then spray with my home made scent reducer. A CRITICAL part of my system to easily fool deer in thinking I'm not even close enough to be worried about. Has worked well for me for years now!
-
Beard and being still. Don't make eye contact, not even for a split second!
-
I also use the Kuiu light beenie and neck gator.. I pull the gator up diagonally from above my nose to the top back of my head and cover the top of head with the beenie.
(http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh601/ftrahan/IMG_0402.jpg) (http://s1254.photobucket.com/user/ftrahan/media/IMG_0402.jpg.html)
If its really hot early season I'll use face paint.
-
Spando Headnet is what I like. They stay tight to my face and dont fog my glasses up a big plus. I like them!
-
Deer in areas I hunt will absolutely look up in the tree and bust you if you're not well concealed. Not all they time, of course, but enough that you know the older deer have figured out that threats come from trees, too. I go with a mesh mask in warmer weather since they tend to not fog my spectacles up as bad as other materials. Treat it with permethrin and it helps with the skeeters.
When it's cold I tend to wear a homemade fleece neck gaiter pulled up to my nose.
Aubowman, how does that Kuiu work with your specs?
TG
-
Carbo mask!
-
Its not perfect but works pretty good Stump. I still have to watch it a little but by far the best I've used over the nose. Fits pretty tight which steers my breathe downward
-
I originally bought my Buff for fly fishing, but after fishing with it for a week, I'll be using it for bow hunting this season. It's light weight and can be worn in many different configurations. The one my wife bought me looks like its covered in tarpon scales, but up in a tree it will look like bark or leaves.

Same here. Face paint when it's warm, Kuiu when it isn't. These things are fantastic. I wish they would make something for warm weather.
-
I use Spandoflage and cut a big enough mouth hole for spittin' Red Man.
-
Spandoflage.
-
I use a buff or spandoflage. Both work pretty well and easy clean up.
SL
-
I wear a face mask I stole from my dad. Guessing he must have made it and like it so much I'm going to make a couple more. Pretty much covers nose, chin, cheeks and Velcro in back. Large opening for mouth so I don't feel it at anchor.
-
Full thick beard.
#ihad a beard before It was cool
-
I grow a full beard in the fall.
I hate face masks and I hate face paints and I've still managed to kill deer from the ground.
-
I don't like face mask. Early season I wear face paint and in cold weather I wear a StormCloth mask. It is thin, water and wind proof. It's also very warm.
-
FYI- Most face paint comes off easily with Equate non-scent wet wipes.

I have tried many times to wear something to cover my face but really cannot stand anything but my own skin. Anything on my face affects my anchor point, hence my shot. An excellent way to miss IMO. I have never shot an animal with my face covered.

I use and really like carbo mask. It's a face paint that's wipes off with just water and won't clog pores, good stuff. Three rivers sells it.
-
Charcoal for me.
Tried paint and hated it, the feel and the smell of crayons all day was one of those little annoyances that will drive you nuts.
I don't like anything getting in the way of bull elk stench!!
There's one now! Can't see his tines to count but he's BIG! Herd bull? Satellite? Mmmm. Kinda big for a satellite.
Just two more yards (c'mon!!) and I got a shot... oh, sorry, forgot where I was for a second.
I grab some burnt wood chunks off the ground and rub it in. Takes a good scrubbing to get off though...

You forget, both of them were filmed and were promoting their own adgendas while hunting so no, they wouldn't be caught dead with one in front of the cameras.
I've worn one for 46 years but mine are homemade. The originals were brown wool and the later ones were deerskin. I stayed away from paint and burnt cork because we used to stop in a diner for lunch and I felt I looked like a yahoo with it on.
-
I stop by Cabelas at lunch and got a camo Buff- love it! Will work great for yearly season here in TX. Like how it stays up as a mask but not tight to hurt or affect vision. Also the 12+ ways to wear it is also nice incase I forget my hat
-
lots of mosquitoes here.. When its hot to cold out I use the Hunters Specialties "camo flex form" head net..it has a wire piece on nose bridge and 2 elastic bands. When north of Florida and its freezing out I wear one of my fleece masks, can't remember any name brands. I also wear my fleece "Coups cap" when it cold to freezing out.
-
I am really liking my camo buff when I wear a face mask when it gets a little colder but during the early season I still use face paint.
