Title: Hanging recurve vertically with bow quiver??!
Post by: ThePushArchery on July 19, 2013, 01:50:00 AM
Would this promote upper limb twist??

I have a bow that I hang vertically strung while not shooting (shoot daily), and am concerned that I'm seeing a slight bit of limb twist occurring.

I've also got lazy once or twice and unstrung and strung it using the push pull method instead of a stringer.

Anyone hang their recurve strung vertically, with fully loaded bow quiver regularly without any sign of upper limb twist??

i have 6 bows hung in my "man cave" by the quiver hood loaded with hunting arrows an they have hung on and off for 2 years now with no twist. 2 of them are early 70's bears on spring arms. and the rest on selways, (bows of various makes) none of them have any twist and i push pull all mine to string them. ( to lazy to grab a stringer) :/

Been hangin' my shooter bow for years strung with a quiver with no problems.
Don't know why anyone would not use a stringer. I think it's easier than the step into method and push pull scares me.

Yep, I would never string a recurve without a stringer. I bought a used Widow MA several years ago. It was RH and I bought it for my son. I didn't have a stringer at the time and I used step through.

$80 and two weeks later Widow sent the bow back to me with the limb that I twisted.... good as new.

Had I known then what I know now I could have easily have fixed the twist but I live and learn. I haven't used step-through since.

I hang several bows strung and unstrung over 1" diameter pegs with no negative results.

I dont understand storing any bow braced. I know many people do this with no ill effects but from a physics standpoint it doesnt make sense. Glass is tough stuff but it has its limits. Putting more stress on it than necessary is just, well not necessary. I am a fan of the push pull method as I have to brace an unbrace more bows than the average bear and it is quick, easy, and safe if done correctly. If a recurve has the slightest bit of limb twist from the time it was built (and many do)leaving it braced will exacerbate the problem over time. This gets worse if the bow is subjected to higher temps or if you use a relatively high brace height. You can make a simple push pull device by drilling a couple 1" dowells into a sturdy wall or bench and covering them with a piece of old garden hose so you can brace your bows when you need them quickly and correctly and it may make yours bows last longer.

Ask any bowyer: unstring your bow after shooting. Funny how that's a universal suggestion.

And ask any bowyer: always use a stringer on a recurve. For some bowyers, doing anything less will even void a warranty.

It's safe. It's fast.

I totally agree. I unstrung my bows with a stringer after every shooting session and put it in a sleeve before I put it in my car. It is less then one minute work, so why not?

Um... in my experience most bowyers have no problem with leaving a modern glass or carbon laminated bow strung.

If you're seeing a bit of limb twist my thought would be it is much more likely to have occurred during the time or two you used the push pull method of stringing the bow than from hanging it strung vertically, quiver or not.

Well this bowyer will state a fact here....
More RC bow limbs are damaged, twisted or ruined completely stringing and un-stringing their bows than anything else. even using a stringer, chit happens.... i keep my hunting bow strung from July till December..... use your common sense. if the way you are hanging it is putting lateral pressure on the limb. straighten out your peg and make sure it's hanging straight with even pressure on the string and limb.

leaving your glass or carbon backed bows strung for long periods of time indoors, out of the direct sun light has no ill effects on them.

Short term hanging a bow with a quiver on a peg from one end is fine. But i do think its safer to hang the bow horizontal off the string or setting flat on the limbs using two pegs or a bow rack for long term usage with or without the string....

What Kirk said x 2, and also yaderehey... every time I see a guy string and unstring one without a proper stringer, I cringe.
