With Solana no more....I'd like to put together a hunt, hogs n deer, or just hogs, for a large group over a 3 or 4 day weekend....
Need shelter, cook, game cleaning facilities, and enough to accomodate 14-16 guys......
I'm tired of missing a lot of my hunting buds due to my parents situation, double duties at work, and other hunts going away....looking for a lot of us to get together.
Sponsors, if you read this .....tell me what you have to offer....if close, and you have the acreage but not the number of beds, I have a camper that will sleep 4-7.

Javies?
-
Terry, our crew hunts one of the National Wildlife Refuges, here in Alabama. We all camp, tents and campers. We set up a cook tent, and everyone pitches in to get it all done. Then when its over everyone pitches in to tear down and leave the site better than we found it. Sometimes we don't get much game, but make up for it in Fellowship and Food!
Thought I'd just throw that out there.

-
Jag...I hear ya...but that is not what I am looking for....less of a 'production'....just show up and start shaking hands...the only work is getting your gear together and packing it back up....
Cept of course dragging, gutting , cleaning animals...
Maybe the Solana type set up is a dream...but I wont know till I try. I still do the camping hunts close to home with friends...lugging all that stuff cross country isn't that much fun....specially with airlines charging...too much hassle.

I know in ks on puplic ground we have cabins for rent and adn d in se ks there are a few close together by just a few yards and a lot of public ground to hunt cabins have every thing but linens show up with gear and hunt would be worth looking at
-
Man.... I like that idea
-
Watching this one. I need to get away! Terry, I've been down to Texas hog hunting twice at Morris Chalmers ranch. He was setup for bowhunters and had all the amenities to accommodate!
-
I also would suggest a Texas hunt. But finding a place that can TRULY accomadate 15-20 hunters takes a lot of land. Better start searching.

TJ, Tell us more bud....

Are you sure it was Morris Chalmers? I have never heard of that one? But there is a Maurice Chambers that runs at least two duifferent rances, and has been doing so for a loooooong time. I just looked on their website and it says they can only accommodate up to 8 hunters.

I've hunted here... there are a ton of hogs on the Pee Dee river! It's a little pricey, but they have a very nice set up and feed you more soul food than you could ever think about eating.
-
I hope it is in 2014! I burned up all my vacation in 2013 working projects on my farm.

I see Pat has been to the Lincoln.

Our sponsor Mule Creek outfitters runs some hog/Javie hunts in the winter down in Tejas. Looks like they have a full setup but you will need to do your own cooking, amenities provided.

Watching this one. Be nice to meet some of ya.

I vote Texas :)

This may be the place TJ is talking about. I hunted there a couple of years ago; lots of hogs, and they love trad archers.
-
Great idea, Terry. I hope the dates you settle on turn out to be something I can schedule. I am long overdue for some outdoor fun.
-
You might get these guys to work a deal for you.

I've never hunted there, but they get pretty good reviews.
-
Terry: I wonder if Andrew down at Wildthings might be able to accommodate a special weekend like this. His new set up sleeps 8 and perhaps he could accommodate a few more using campers or tents. He has a lot of land and there are hogs and deer aplenty there. It's probably worth a phone call to him to see if he might be willing to do something special.

I believe both of Maurice Chambers ranches are high fenced but have lots of exotics.

Man I'm hoping this works out. I'm all for sharing a trad camp with y'all!

I have been to Lincoln Ranch twice. They have javies in certain real thick areas and alot of hogs, but mostly hunting over feeders at dusk and overnight. Spot and stalk is real tough because it is so thick. I had a lot of fun and was successful both trips, but I think 12 is as many as they can handle. The owner is super nice, although he isn't a hunter. Deer hunting would be tough, as this is where they really make their money. I will probably go there again in the spring. Smoking Joes idea sounds a little better since it would have better stalking opportunities.
-
I was wrong, they do accommodate up to 16 hunters and rates for deer are not that bad. Decent accommodations. List of available dates and rates on website.

Hey Terry. If it works out, and the time works for me. I'll volunteer to do the cooking. I can cook for large groups & My stuff tastes pretty good too, if I do say so myself!!
-
I would love to go on another group hunt. Ditto on the Texas idea.
-
I love the idea, particularly during our off season! Texas might be just the place!!
-
Only problem with most of the links posted is that they are high fenced ,as a lot of private hunting ranches in Texas are, I do not necessarily have a problem with that as long as they have a lot of acerage but some folks might. Also most do not provide meals, I think what Terry is looking for is an all inclusive place so that the hunters do not have to worry about anything except hunting. I will be keeping an eye on this and I am in for whatever we can come up with.
-
Ah, I read it wrong!!
-
Terry....the land I lease is run by a fella that has a fairly large swath of land in same area. They have 900 acres just for hog hunting alone....it includes a 400 acre enclosure for nuisance hogs and for people that want that thing.
But the 500 acres outside of the fence is wild and free....They have a lodge house, full meat preparation and a taxidermist if needed...sleeping bunks, etc. I can check on it if you like...
-
What about Martin Family Ranch? Trad only I hear.
-
You're all welcome to join us in Arkansas The weekend of Sept. 28 on Lake Ouachita for the annual A.R.R.O.W. 2013 hunt. Public land. Deer season open with no trophy fees.

Yep, you got it Bisch. I just can't spell. Great hog hunt though, if anyone ever wants to look him up. Prices used to be reasonable also but that may have changed.
Maurice is a trad guy himself and really enjoyed our group on both occasions. I may give him a call and see if he could bend the rules and take a few more.

To me these hunts are primarily social events but a target rich environment adds to the adventure with all of the evening tales to share. Hogs and javies would be ideal.

I second that idea.
Would work out great for me.

So...ideal hunt would accommodate ??? 15-20 guys willing to come from all over US? Would need accommodations for sleeping and eating without each guy having to haul a bunch of gear. Good place to gather and BS, place to shoot bows and BS, place to eat and BS and then decent hunting for that many guys for deer and hogs from sunrise to sunset?
How many days would you think would be a good plan and about how much per person would be a reasonable target cost??
-
Watching this too. I'd love to meet some members. Hell, I've never even shot with another traditional archer much less hunt. It would be a blast.
-
That sounds pretty good, Skitch.
And guys that might want to come from Canada, too...
Might be more than I could handle, but maybe the cost would be doable with some time to plan.
-
All I ever done is sit around a fire with my huntin buddies drinkin beer and sharing stories and a good laugh. Sure would one day love to get on one these big hunts with all you guys.
-
Just wanted to clarify for Danny, but Lincoln Ranch isn't a high fence hunt.
-
Anyone ever tried southern Oklahoma. I hear a lot if pigs and deer? Have to find the right place? Pretty close to TX.
-
I'll be watching this. sounds like a good idea. it would be cool to not only shoot but hunt with other trad shooters. once date and place is set may look into if its reasonable...been looking around for just a hunt for me and my wife and some places are EXPENSIVE...its ridiculous. but i will/am definitely interested and will be watching :)

SKITCH, We used to get all that at Solana and then some.
If we can get good deer hunting, with hogs or even Javi's as a bonus for around $1200 for 4-5 days......I think it would make a whole bunch of us that luv'd to get together in the off season very. very happy!!!!

What happen to the Solana hunt? :dunno:

If we can find something like this, I'd be one of the VERY HAPPY folks! Watching this close, and searching as I have been since we went away from Solana... Javies are on my hit list still, so they would be a plus... Good deer hunting would still be higher on the priority list though...

I really hope someone can find something, but, and I do not want to bust anyone's hopes, I have done a bunch of research on line and on the phone and finding a place that offers everything included with good deer hunting, hog hunting and possibly Javi, and meals for $1200 per person for 15 to 20 people, for 4 to 5 days just does not exist in Texas anymore. The best I could come up with that included food was $2000 to $2500 and up. You can find places that can accommodate, but they do not provide food and most of them only assign the hunters to a pasture and you are on you own as far as blinds and stands are concerned as well as transportation on the ranch. As I said, I will be watching this closely as I really hope we can find a place, does not really have to be Texas, but for Javi it would have to be in a southwestern state.
-
How about just hogs and javelinas, 4-5 days?
I would be interested in that. I can hunt deer here at home, but hogs are scarce, and javis no existent.
Looking forward to something like this. :campfire:
-
Terry, bar was set high at Solano, really enjoyed my trip with the trad gang. I will be watching for information, unfortunately no suggestions for a place from me.
-
As cook and guide for Mule Creek Outfitting I can assure you that we have discussed this idea and can accommodate this hunt. The "cook-for-yourself" plan that we offer is what most folks want, but we can set up an all inclusive plan with meals. Our bunkhouse is set up with bunk beds for 12 and we have had up to 20 hunters by setting up cots. Cleaning station set up works well and we provide freezer space for your meat.
There are over 100 square miles on our main lease and we have access to an adjacent ranch with additional area. Hunting is mostly from ground blinds - pit or pop up - and there are hogs and javies. We hunt baited water holes. This is a no fence area with real wild game, so hunting skill is required.
Not sure what the booking situation for 2014 is as that is Jacob and John's responsibility. Our hunts are generally booked by this time. But there is a chance this can happen this season and I will ask the owners about scheduling. For sure it could be set up for 2015 if not this year.
Landscape in the Permian Basin is not as pretty as Solana Ranch, but the game is there and healthy. There is cattle and oil ranching going on, but no other big game hunting.
More after I talk to Mule Creek staff...
-
I would like to hear more about mule creek I've heard good things. I like Texas hogs better than Texas deer hunting anyway to be honest. Never even seen a javie but sure have a desire to.
-
Mule Creek Outfitting looks very promising for a large group.
I wish we had enough land to host this hunt. We have added to our property since last year but not enough to host that large a group(could handle 8, though).
-
Outfitters
This hunt will be well documented by many of the participants of this hunt and will definitely be a FREE form of marketing your operation to all the members of Trad Gang after it is reported in our photos and tales spurring future bookings. So lets hear what you have to offer!
-
We have the facilities, available animals and sufficient land to host such an event. I can convince a couple of guys to move their dates and we could do this the first or second week of Feb. Unfortunately we are fully booked for January and the third week of Feb.
Couple of threads below pertinent to our operations.

One more thing. Our usual procedure is for the hunters to bring their own groceries and use our kitchen. Frequently hunters would divide up cooking duties so you only had to concern yourself with fixing food for one night during the hunt. On the other hand, we are accustomed to providing meals on our big game hunts and could come up with a meal plan for this event. Hot breakfast, sack lunch and Sunday dinner every night if thats what you need.
-
Tradgang Hogs and Javi's.....gonna make a good T-shirt, hoodie and patch!!!!
-
I've hunted at Mule Creeks's TX camp. It gets two thumbs up from me.
-
This sounds like a terrific idea, I would love to meet up for a hunt with Trad Gang Friends. Texas does have a lot of outstanding non-game hunting opportunities..
If I can do anything to help research or perhaps make a site visit report, feel free to call on me.

This whole thread has me jonesing. SO EXCITING if this gets put together!!!
-
Hi maybe you could check with nicki roth archery out fitters he does deer and hog hunts out of s. Georgia and s Florida. Good guy lots of private land.
I hunted with his out fit 5 times.
-
Nickie roth has the land, but doesn't have facilities for bunking, mess, etc.
-
I like the idea of Texas in February! John,
what would will be looking at as far as price ?
-
Thanks for all the comments...will read over the whole thread this evening.
I'm thinking we don't have to have deer, but hogs would be just fine if it was target rich so to speak...or lots of real opportunities.
Javis would be a bonus, but doesn't have to be.
Again, don't want to fool with setting up tents or camps or talk of groceries. I want this hunt to be a relax and tell camp...not come back and work. Those are the norm, and yes, I do them all the time and love them.....but I want this one for hunting hard, tracking hard, and sharing stories.
-
Oh...I fully realize this hunt may not exist. I'm just trying to duplicate the 'Solana of Old' days...deer are optional.
That was one WELL OILED machine and not sure that can't be duplicated again.....but I can try and hopefully get close.
-
A hunt like this would be fun. I love to hunt pigs and javelina in Texas. The ranch where my wife and I hunt is primitive camping only. Mule Creek looks interesting.
-
Sounds like a great time!!! Might be interested in attending if schedule works out!
-
I will be watching this one - is this open to new TradGang members?
-
Gen273, I will assume you were asking your question of me. Our hunts are $750.00, 5 days hunting. We can provide hot breakfast, sandwiches, fruit, chips for lunch and hot meal every night for $100.00 per person. Texas sales tax applies. Meals for 6 days to include the first evening meal the day you arrive, and breakfast on the day you leave. Menu with Steaks one night, pot roast, chicken stew, spaghetti with meatballs, grilled chicken and pork loin, and perhaps some pulled pork or gumbo and rice are typical fare in our camp. Fresh bread and desert every evening. Tecate not included. We do not provide the liquid refreshments but we do not discourage them either.
DaveT1963 We have several hunts with other tradgang members already booked that still have some openings. If you don't get in on this group hunt we can add you to one of our other hunts.
-
Watching!!
-
Thanks for keeping the Trad Gang hunt idea alive, Terry. As a late convert to the Trad Bow I can't say how much it helped me learning from lifetime real bow guys. I went to Solana the first year I started Trad hunting and went back for 3 more hunts and learned an awful lot. I also learned that the people who participate in this endeavor are the most principled folks, as a group, that I have managed to run into, and many have highly developed craftsmanship hobbies.
I would encourage anyone to attend a Trad Gang hunt if it is worked out.
-
SOLD!!! Sign me up. I want to stalk a javie bad.
-
Have not read all the posts but if you are looking for something in Texas. Try Brushy Hills Ranch 13,000 acres of low fenced property. I know he is not a sponsor here so I understand if this gets deleted.

The Mule Creek gang is headed to WY this weekend for our mule deer and elk hunts, but John will be back on line in a week or so. I cook for camp in WY and will be happy to cook in Texas for a TG hunt. Jacob and John put on a great hunt. I'll be back on line in early October. Till then... Good Hunting all!

Since you are considering cypress, how about Hog Heaven? Maybe we can persuade Ray Hammond to cook and get Mike Mitchum to come up to watch me do the dishes! Ray also has to give filing and stropping broadhead lessons too!
-
Gil, you appreciate that live oak road too huh? I see it all the time in my mind. I cant describe it to others with words alone.
-
This would be great for us. We could drive and I will have sharp broadheads!
I love it down there.

-
I'm interested...
Wish we could accomodate that many, but we are limited to about 5 in order to provide a quality hunt. That is till we get a few more leases which might happen soon.
Just hogs...not enough deer.
TX is what you are looking for.
Never been there. Sure want to.
I trust you will pick a good spot.
I'll be watching this one.
Thanks for the idea.

Whats the lastest word on this hunt?

Back from WY and ready to hunt my home deer in Iowa and run a trapline, but Texas is not far off - 3 months from today for our first week of hunting. John flew to WY for the last week of elk and to help pack out camps and drive home. He will be back on line around 10/25. Keep your broadheads sharp for fall hunting and come on down for some winter fun with hogs and javies. Looking forward to seeing many TradGang members year at Mule Creek Outfitting hog hunts.
