Hello everyone, I want to share with you some pictures of my first Quebec Labrador Caribou Hunt with longbow.
It was definitely a hunt of a lifetime. I went with my dad and he and I knew that the challenge was going to be difficult with the longbow, but he supported me all the time. It was a challenge that I was definitely up for. I was lucky to harvest two bulls with my longbow and I could not believe it!
The conditions were very tough, lots of rain, wind and snow. We had severe weather most of the time we were there. The gear performed flawlessly. My setup was:
A&H two pice longbow 55@27 56" AMO
150gr Eclipse Warewolf single bevel broadheads
FMJ 400 arrows with 75gr HIT inserts
Flecthing protection with Feather-Dri Water Repellent Powder
KUIU raingear and baselayers

On the first morning, while we were walking towards a spot to search for animals, the guide (who was also a bowhunter) said: hey there are some Ptarmigans, why dont you go and stalk them and try to get one. Deep in my mind I thought he was testing my shooting skills or something. But I saw the Ptarmigan on top of a 4 ft rock about 40 yrds from me and I got closer and shot it at about 25 ydrs. The arrow flew perfect and the first bird was down. I celebrated the shot "Fred Eichler Style" and the guide and my dad were laughing so much, and I think that deep in their minds their confidence in me went up a little bit after that shot. I was so pumped because I made a good shot and this really got me into a good mood on the rest of the hunt. Later on the trip I learned that these birds are so "careless" for humans that you have to almost kick them with your foot to be able to shoot them! It was great fun shooting to the birds throughout the hunt.

My dad got his bull on the second afternoon hunt. We were so happy and he got a really big one. Since I invited him for his birthday to this hunt, I felt very relieved that he was able to get a good one and now I could focus on getting my first one with the bow.
After a severe snow storm that made us take shelter, we went to a spot and we saw two bulls bedded at about 600 yrds in the storm. We made the hunt and the first caribou (the wide one) I shot when he passed running at about 25 yrds from me and got him in the back legs and he bedded and since it was very late that afternoon, we decided to let him rest and finished the deal the next morning. I did some spot and stalk the next morning and was able to close the deal. What a truly an amazing hunting experience this was! My dad said to me "...hey Roberto, I really did not wanted to discourage you but the way I had seen the Caribou behaving I really thought that you would not be able to take one with the longbow, but here we are now celebrating...."what an amazing felling that was! I was pumped!!!

So by the fourth day, my dad and I were very happy for the trip and had no problems on having taken only one bull each, we were just too happy that we were able to do it and share the experience. We were not seeing the amount of bulls that we thought we would see, so bulls were in limited numbers.
The last day I was able to take a second bull by a spot & stalk hunt in a very rocky and hilly terrain that was perfect for me. The stalk was awesome! The guide, my dad and myself could not believe it that my second bull was down...it was a great moment! I will prepare the video of the kill shot and share it with you guys later.

Great hunt and great pics!
Quebec Caribou hunt that i did will always be one of my most memorable hunts! Gald you had a guide that bowhunted. We were only 2 bow hunters (both shooting longbows) in with 4 gun hunters and a guide that never guided bowhunters. Still worked out great for us but had to basically guide our guide...lol
Glad your trip was amazing and with your father! it doesnt get any better than that.

Congrats! You can't beat a successful hunt with your dad in the frozen north. Caribou is delicious meat too.

Who was your Outfitter. I was up there last year with Explo Sylva, and we got the total S**** job. They put us in a fishing camp, and flew some rich rifle hunters who booked after us to the main camp that the herd was migrating through. We landed on Tuesday in this camp and they did not fly us into the herd until Friday. Then to top it off we landed in the area of the herd at 2:00 pm and were only aloud to hunt until 4:00 pm, so we could get back to the plane. That was only Two hours of hunting for $5,000. I would love to go back, just with a better outfitter.

Congratulations sir!

I will be editing the video during the weekend and soon will post it so I can share it with all.
As requested, I will also send pics of the bow.

Thank you Roberto. :)

I was highly recommended by an outfitter friend from Mexico to go with Kevin Mattice and he owns the High North Outfitting. http://www.highnorthoutfitting.com/ It is a small outfitting business (Max 8 hunters in camp) but focused on great service and quality. You can look up his packages online.
He set us up with one of his guides called "Chip" who was also a bowhunter and has hunted many years and gotten plenty of caribou with the bow. He knew exactly how to work with the terrain and wind conditions to get the best out of each stalk we did. If it was not for him, I might have come back empty handed.
Here are the three that guided the group sitting for the plane to come and pick us up the last day and waiting for the next group to arrive. Chip (my guide) is sitting on the left, Jayme is on the center and owner Kevin (bearded).

Although Kevin did said to me when we booked that it was a tough hunt to make with the bow, and specially traditional bow, that he will do his best to try to get me a shot oportunity.
They also had Bruce, as the cook, who was amazing at the kitchen. One of the best cook's I've ever had in a camp. Homemade cookies, apple pies, soups, Caribou lasagna, man....just delicious food!
Highly recemended!

Beto, Felicidades
A truly awesome adventure!

Congrats young man. Caribou are fun to hunt. I killed 2 bulls back in 1990. It was a great hunt. The weather is really fickle as you say. I heard while we were there that if you don't like the weather wait 15 minutes and it will change.
-
Way ta go Beto,
Thanks for sharing your hunt and time with your father with us. Caribou are my dream hunt. I have a long bucket list of North American game animals I want to try, but Caribou are at the top of my list. They are such majestic members of the deer family with their regal manes and ornate head gear.
Just looks like a wonderful time, and your enthusiasm has come through in your words!
