Tomorrow, October 1st, Cade's 2nd hunting season begins!
We're very excited about what we have ahead of us this season!
Since there was a lot of interest in Cade's thread last year....I figured that I'd try to keep a running thread that will keep everyone up to date on how the season is going.
Here's a video to start things off...

Here`s to a safe and happy season!

ChuckC
-
Best of luck to you and Cade this year. Look forward to following along with you again.
-
Thanx guys.....just a note about the video....
It's obviously not any kind professional quality, and it was filmed with a few different devices. Most of it was filed with my point and shoot camera, a couple of the poorest quality clips were done on my Iphone, and a couple few of the best quality clips were made with a new video camera I just got a few weeks ago.
So looking forward.....hopefully we'll be able to share some decent quality stuff this season
Also have some pix I want to share before the "games" begin....
-
:bigsmyl:
-
Good stuff Curt. Looking forward to the rest.
-
Super excited to follow this and find some inspiration and motivation to get my 3 kids more interested in what I've loved for so many years. I could use some pointers on making hunting and the outdoors a bigger part of their lives. :coffee:
-
Can't wait to see how the season unfolds for you guys! I know it will be good! :wavey:

Yesterday...
http://youtu.be/RCiHBhLmDAY
I did have clips from the woods, but didn't have time to edit them in.
Work tonight...then out with Cade in the morning to hit a good ground blind that I've been grooming since last year. Same spot Cade got his first shot at a turkey and deer last fall. We were hunting out of a DB last year.

-
good luck BRO i hope you guys have a great one :wavey:
-
Thanx fellas!
I turkey hunted again yesterday after working all night. I got there just at daybreak and could hear the birds on the roost(same flock as the other days miss).
I got set up about 150 yds. away, as close as I dared because it was getting light already.
All set, I started calling to the birds in the trees.
Long story short, I got into a bit of a shouting match with a very vocal hen and thought I had her ticked off enough that she'd come....but after an hour and a half....I was still sitting there alone and very sleepy!
It was time to pack up and get Cade to his baseball game(he went 2 for 2, and had a nice game behind the plate).
This morning we were rained out.
This afternoon I'll be out by myself as my in-laws are leaving and Cade wants to spend some time with them before they leave.
Hopefully the rain holds off and I can get the season rolling if something shows up!!
-
best of luck fellas
-
Good Luck this season to you and cade both!
-
Had a good hunt this morning....

No doubt a great morning. Looking forward to the next video Curt.

Really enjoy the videos! Amazing how quickly Cade has grown up!
-
Appreciate you sharing that. What a great morning hunt!!
When that red squirrel or chipmunk started barking at the beginning of your video, my dog went crazy here in the house. LOL!
Keep the videos coming.
-
Thanx fellas.....I'm still learning this video stuff.
My computer struggles with the editing....just not enough horsepower....but I struggle through it.
This weekend should be good
-
Thanks for brining us along Curt, can't wait for the weekend! Good luck!!!!!
David

Sunday, October 13th....
Yesterday we didn't get out in the woods.....Cade had a morning baseball game. And my nephew AC,who plays division 1 soccer for Canisious Collage, and I rarely get to see play....was playing within driving distance in Conn.. So, about 10 family members and friends headed east to watch him play....time well spent!
So that brings us to Sunday the 13th....
In the morning we headed to the same stand where I had the 3 bucks all over me last Tues, morning. But besides a deer that we ran into in the dark on the way in....we didn't see a thing. (I have some video)
Getting down...

Breakfast time...

The Afternoon Hunt...
For the afternoon hunt we headed to a spot we'd be waiting to hunt since the season started....the stand that Cade killed his very first deer ever out of last fall....it's a great afternoon spot and very sacred ground to us!
It's a low ladder in a small double tree, only about 6ft high, and then I set a hang-on on the other tree. I sit on the ladder(it has no seat), and Cade steps off the ladder and hunts out of the hang-on.
It's set only 6ft high because that's what the cover dictates....it's a great set-up really.
In the very first video I posted on the thread you'll see a little clip of me trimming it out while Cade is in the stand.
We got there early and settled in...

You guys made that look downright easy!
I have found that I look forward to the encounters my kids have MORE than the ones I get!
Congrats to you both...GREAT shooting Cade! All of us on TradGang are proud of you...We all know how much dedication goes into that kind of shooting skill!
Walking the walk! :campfire:
-
Thanks so much everyone!
My time in the field with my boy is very, very special time for me.....I'm glad you enjoy what we share with you'all.....
What a shot huh?! This is only the second time we've hunted this set, once last year, and this time....both sits produced deer for Cade. Funny part is I sit lower than him and I never saw either arrow strike home!
But when this one hit, from all my years experience, I knew it was good.....and Cade's instantly blurting out "perfect shot Daddy" only served to reinforce what I heard.
But how absolute perfect he hit it we didn't know till we walked up on it.
If you were gonna walk up to a 3d target and show someone where to place an arrow and put your finger on the target.....it would be exactly where Cade hit this one!!
As far as the video......I really had no idea what I had captured. I kinda remember following the deer as it walked out of the woods......but I was also very aware of the fact that I needed to watch the deer in case it wasn't going to stop. I didn't want Cade to shoot at a walking deer...
I could go on and on about everything....how about some pictures.....

Think we're happy????

And exit...

As far as Cade's equipment....
He's shooting my Jack Kempf Raven 3pc., at his 24"draw, it's about 45#.
His arrows are Trad Only .600's, cut to 26", and it was tipped with a 2 blade, 250 grain, VPA Penetrator broadhead.
As you could see in the video of Cade pulling his arrow out of the ground, it hardly slowed down when it passed through the deer.
Upon later examination, we found the arrow cut a rib almost in half on the way in, centered both lungs, also cut some of the plumbing off the heart.....and centered a rib on the way out cutting a perfectly vertical slice right through the center of it, leaving it in tact(had it hit horizontal, it would have cut it right in half)....good stuff!!
-
Awesome Guys!!!
Nice shot Cade!!!
Time for some Hawaii hunting!!!
-
Way to go Cade...Great shot!!!

Thumbs up to you both. What shot placement... awesome. If more Dads spent time with their kids such as this, our nation would be such a better place . So many life lessons taught and meanings brought to those lessons in the woods... Props to you Curt !!!

-
That apple orchard needs to be renamed the "Cabrera Cementary"...critters go missing in that place.
Way to go Cade...you got a good dad!
-
I watched the video last night....slept on what to say.....
I remember Ron LaClair saying to me when TradGang was about 6 months old.....
"We wondered who would be carrying the Torch for Traditional Bowhunting on the internet" I don't know who all 'we' were, but coming from Ron those words were enough.
So, I'll pass this along to Cade.....
Our ranks should be proud you little man....a young hunter with so much experience and success so early in life.....we all should be thankful for Cade... for he too will be one that carries a torch one way or another for us in the future.
-
cool pic
-
Yes....I took it. We rode in together and watched his dad's jaw drop with the red one he'd killed with me that morning....then took Cade's dad with us to trail the 2nd one Cade had shot with his dad the night before.
Once we got both of those loaded, I told Cade he was driving....that he'd earned it. GREAT memories.
And here's the link to that 6 hog weekend...lots of stories within the stories....

Curt tell cade i think its pretty darn cool that he wants to hunt with a recurve. Most kids his age dont want to hunt and if they do they want to shoot a crossbow or compound b/c its easy and they want to go to school and brag to thier buddys saying i shot more deer than you did this year.
he could hunt with me anyday! pretty darn cool. hes got my respect
how old is cade?
-
That boy is a natural.
-
i realize that my approval doesnt matters to you but.... I usually get annoyed when i see peoples kids on the Outdoor Channel hunting. But I LOVE IT when i see kids hunting with a stickbow and i hear their sucess stories. :) :)
-
That was a smokin shot Cade!!! Perfect. Congrats
-
That was GREAT Cade Congrats!!! :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
-
Great shot. Congrats Cade!!
-
He's 13 now. 12 in the Hog Pic I posted.
-
Congrats Cade!
-
Outstanding - the thread, the father-son connection, the game, the experience, the camaraderie of TG fellowship and the harvest.
Much thanks for sharing.......
-
Good video, guys!
-
Congrats Cade! Can't wait to see you at Shawn's and hear you tell the story. Congrats to you too curt, you are a great role model for other fathers to follow.
-
I am enjoying watching Cade grow into a fine young man and a great hunter. Curt you are doing a fine job with his skills. I enjoy your hunts and stories.

-
"The Cabrera Cemetary"....... I love it.... A wonderful new name for the orchard. Now go get us another one Cade !!!
-
Excellent! Congrats you two!
-
Thank you all so, so much for your praise, well wishes and support....your comments, all of them, mean more to us that you know!
But I have to honest, when I read this post by Bill, I welled up a bit...

Wed., Oct. 16th...
Although I got off of work in time to head straight out to the woods for a couple hours. I opted to go to sleep....
I'd been thinking about 2 spots I needed to scout. I turkey hunt both of these areas every spring and usually find some great deer sign....but for some reason seem to forget about them during deer season.
This year I remembered....so yesterday I decided it was time to check them out...and if they showed promise....set them up.
The first spot is an edge along an old orchard. The deer come from the working orchard and head toward this area. I always seem to see deer during the spring while turkey hunting in this area.
When I got there, it was evident by the trails, that it was worth getting a tree ready for a stand.
I drilled a double oak tree with my Woodpecker drill. Because of the cover of the tree, I was able to keep the set-up about 10-12ft up. Nice and low, with good cover....Now all I have to do is carry my Lone Wolf Assault in with me, drop my pegs in the holes, and hang my stand....looking forward to hunting this set...
Then I headed for an Oak flat that the deer use as they come out of an orchard, then head up the mountain.
Every spring has good sign on it. For years I've overlooked this area for deer hunting....not sure why....
I had some thoughts in my head about what I hoped I'd find.....and I wasn't disappointed!

So I drilled the tree...
Then went back to my truck, and grabbed a stand. Walked back in and hung it. While I was clearing shooting lanes I found this 15yds. from the stand...
This set-up has a great back door entry.....I'm really looking forward to getting back in to hunt this one and see what was making those magnum rubs!!
-
around here the elk would get credit for some of those rubs...
cant wait to see what you two do there...betin it's good...keep us posted
-
Nice job big man!!
I'm pretty jealous
-
Great shot Cade!
-
Great shot on a great animal. Well done father and son!
Wow, it doesn't seem very long ago when I saw your thread where you took Cade and his sister out into the woods and you all built a little campfire and a shelter, I think. Dang, how he has grown.
Seeing him on his iPhone reminds me of my two sons when I take them deer hunting. That's exactly what they do and I end up telling them when a deer is coming. Kinda funny. Heck, I've even been caught having my Android phone out messing with it when a deer was fast approaching!
Ah, memories to last a lifetime.....
-
I'm a little slow with this but... Congrats Cade! GREAT shot! :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
-
  :clapper: :clapper:
congrats to the two of you!!i'll be watchin this thread the rest of season to see what comes
-
Nice.. Congrats.. Food for the family..
-
Thats awesome, congrats!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Well done Cade!!!!
Perfect day :)
:campfire:

Very cool! Awesome that your taking the time to do this.

Friday October 18th....
http://youtu.be/VoCwtZb9koc
Now the unfortunate ending that you might have already read about...
As I was preparing to leave my stand, I took out my VPA Small Game Thumper and took my customary practice shot before I descended.
Shot taken, I was about packed up when I hear something running in the leaves...I thought "oh no!"
But it was 2 squirrels chasing....one stopped about 12yds away ans started feeding....I thought "what the heck, I'm getting down"
So I nocked an arrow with a VPA 1 1/4" 3 blade.....the squirrel stopped feeding as it became aware of me in the tree...but it didn't move.
I draw and shoot, and it goes into the squirrel matrix move....I knew I was close...and thought I may have nicked it because it jumped up on the stump next to it.....and it acted a bit weird.
It came off the stump as I reloaded, and shot again, but I knew I'd just missed this time.
As he disappeared over the hill I could see it was laboring a bit and I thought....hmmmmmm
This is what I found...
I got closer and noticed something small laying under the arrow...
A closer look revealed this...
Cut clean off in a perfect v-cut where 2 of the 3 blades caught it's foot!
Crazy!!!
I did find some blood over the hill about 5 yds away, but no trace after that and the squirrel was long gone....
I'm sure it'll live to gather nuts another day....but like I said, I feel kinda bad about it.
Who knows, maybe I'll get another chance at it
I'm long overdue to wrap my hands around a big set of antlers....
-
good luck, shoot straight
chuckc
-
CONGRATULATIONS Cade!!!!!!!!!! (and you too Curt!)
The "Hero Pics" on page 7 was just what I was looking for!!!!! (I've got an Old & Dumb computor, and I can't get the video to work,LOL)
Anyway, GREAT JOB by both of you!!!!! Cade is certainly taking after his Old Man!!! Following right in your footsteps Curt, You have EVERY reason to be proud!!!!! Years from now, all we can do is look back & see what we've passed on...
Hopefully, I'll get to experiance that with Tyler this year.....
-
Awesome thread as always Curt! Congrats Cade. Great shot. I'm sure that squirrel will make it. He will just climb a little slower.
-

http://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=em-upload_owner&v=qJbcWyypMkU&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DqJbcWyypMkU%26feature%3Dem-upload_owner#
The best part is, he just took it in stride and smiled....he "gets it"....I'm proud of him!
-
The smile says it all. It hurts a little but there will always be the next opportunity around the corner. Keep up the good work. I sent u a p.m about cades 46 rail clothing just wanted to know how he likes it and would he recommend it thanks brad
-
Looks like a great way to spending an afternoon with your son. At least you are getting opportunities. Even Wayne Gretsky missed the net sometimes. Nice video Curt.
-
This morning, after working all night.....I went out...
I need to sleep, probably wont be till tomorrow I can add anything else......but I will tell that I captured it all on video!
-
Looks good so far. Looking forward to the rest of the story... :campfire:
-
He is human!! Good "Dad encouragement" after the miss. Looking forward to the next vid. :campfire:
-
:bigsmyl:
-
Looks like he handled it great. Everyone misses the mark sometimes. I really liked the footage of the doe after the shot. I thought she might come back. She was really throwing that nose up in the air checking the wind. Some cool footage for sure. Thanks for posting.
-
i will be waiting patiently curt..WHAT A GREAT THREAD!!
-
:dunno:
-
Shake it off Cade, It happens all to the best of em.
Curt, Get some rest bud.
:campfire:
-
TTT
-
When will we know!? Lol
-
Guys, I have finally gotten some sleep...though not enough...and I do have some pix edited.
The video is going to have to wait a bit as I just have too much to catch up on right now, and my computer takes so, so long to get video edited....I need a new laptop!!!
I'll let the video tell the full story, enjoy the pix till then.....
I will say that curiosity killed this deer. Where the shot took place...
I was shooting "Cy". I'd just got back from Jack, he made some new static limbs for it...
Like I said, the video will explain in a lot more detail exactly what went down. I went back to my truck after the shot to get my phone...

The shot was further back than I wanted, but quartering away. My thoughts were that I went in back, but the arrow would exit somewhere near the off shoulder.
The exact spot of the shot had cut hair and blood immediately, this is about 3yds. into the trail...

I had in fact hit a little further back than I wanted. That's why I love the quartering away shot!

Great shot Curt. Congratulations. I know that you have been guiding quite a bit and with your long work hours it is good to get some time to hunt . That steep drop off looks familiar from stumping.
-
Way to go Curt! Can't wait to see the video. :clapper:

Thanks guys!!
Glen, I shot this deer from the ladder stand by the stump that cost you a VPA SGT :D

This past weekend was kinda slow as far as deer sightings....but the weather was perfect!
Saturday morning Cade had a late morning game, so I hunted for a couple hours by myself...it was cold!
New spot in a very familiar area...iffy wind that I think doomed my hunt....but I'll be back this weekend with predicted NW winds...
The afternoon I also hunted by myself in another new stand in an orchard that was tore up with buck sign.
A reminder of this summers locust infestation...

From the stand...

I did have a close encounter with one big doe and triplet fawns, but no shooting. Also saw a coyote that got downwind....gone!
-
The next morning, with predicted wind out of the west we hit the new stand that I moved the other day after I shot my deer out of the Ant tree.
I'd moved the ladder down into the bottom where I'd been seeing most of the deer move through....it was now called "The Cooler Stand"....you'll see why...
It was also the maiden hunt for Cade's new Stalker recurve!
We got settled in with great anticipation of the rising sun....but once again the wind doomed us!
What started out as a perfect west crosswind, turned into a terrible SE wind right at daybreak!
We got out kinda early because of the wind...

We plan to hit it hard this weekend. No game for Cade Saturday. So hopefully we'll get 2 morning, and 2 afternoon hunts in....it's getting to be primetime for Cade to kill his first antlered buck!!!

Thanx fellas....yes I need to update....working nights is killing me!!
I promise to try to get caught up this weekend.
The video is so frustrating on my computer....it takes forever and sometimes crashes and I lose everything I just worked hours doing!!
Last weekend with Cade was very slow as far as deer sightings....ill add some pix later...
This past Monday I had a good day in Westchester Co...but didn't kill anything.
Today, I killed another doe...pix and some video to follow(didn't get the shot, it all happened way too fast).
We'll be at it again this weekend!
-
Nice job on the doe Curt. The Timber Ghost gets blood. Best of luck to you and Cade this weekend.

Burnsie, Yes that's the same Timberghost that I won The Muzzy Shoot with.
It will now forever be known as "Muzz"...

Congrats on another doe Curt. That Nov. 4 video was great... looks like a great spot! Good luck!
-
Great pics Curt. Man those are some big trees that buck's picking on! I envy you getting to hunt with Cade and get it on video. Good times and great memories. My first grandson just turned two. I'll be building him a little LB soon. Can't wait to spend some time with him roaming the woods.
-
Kurt - what brand face mask are you wearing?
Congrats on the harvests, too.
-
The face masks are from Cabela's....they have a real light weight, and a heavier polar stretch one. I have them both...the weather dictates which one I wear.
-
Congrats Curt. Love that property. Reminds me of when I was just a teen.
-
Great video Curt!
-
Mike, it's such a privilege to have that beautiful piece if ground to hunt thanx to Doug!!
Thanx Joe!
November 11th...Cade gets his chance at a buck!
Enjoy the video(ya might need to turn it up to hear the beginning)...

Cade was a bit disappointed he missed, but as usual he took it in stride.
The shot was right at the edge of where I'd let him shoot. I think that's why he asked if it was "too far".
But he's been shooting his new Stalker recurve so well I just 'knew' he could kill that buck. The shot was right around 20yds...
He said just thinks he got too excited and dropped his arm trying to 'peek'...
As far as the "injury" on the side of the bucks face....bino's showed that he had one of those big fiberous tumors on the side of his face that looked like it had been open somehow.
We're still at it....more vid's and pix to come...
-
TTT
-
Almost Cade, you will get him next time.
-
Awesome video and shot. It looked right there just a bit low. Peters not gonna hav a chance at bunnies standing next to you Cade.
-
Great video Curt. Hang in there Cade, everybody misses now and then. I know I have. Still a month to go . Can't say enough about how important it is to spend time with your kids.Curt, you obviously get it.
-
Wow been a while since I updated!
Still working nights, losing sleep, and still trying to hunt some.
I've had some good hunts, I wont bore you with most of them...but I would like to share this one from a couple weeks ago with Cade.
Ever since the week before thanksgiving last year, when I first laid eyes on this buck, I knew I wanted to kill him....BAD!
That day I first saw him, I had him within solid bow range, and only the fact that he was slightly quartering to me, before he picked me out in the skinny tree I climbed kept him alive.
I would see him 2 more times last season, but never remotely close to to shot range.
I figured he was 3 1/2 yrs old by the look of his big body, and even though he was fairly mature, he was just a 6 point....2 big forks, and two brow tines...I wanted him bad!!!
Anyone that knows me, knows I like the "oddball" bucks that others will pass up. Heck I killed two bucks in TX that were considered "cull bucks" by their standards.....I was ticked to get them!!
Cade and I thought and talked about the "Big 6" often through this year leading up the season.
I set a trail cam right under one of our stands in late September and didn't get a chance to check it or hunt the stand for over a month.
The "Big 6" was still alive and I got several pix of him.
I got a chance to hunt 3 times(by myself) down in this area in the next 2 weeks but never saw him.
Cade the whole time was saying he was going to kill the "Big 6"....
Well Cade finally got the chance to hunt this spot in Westchester county me, and guess who showed up first thing!

-
Great Video!
-
Love the video...hope to see another encouter with the big 6!
-
Thanx guys....I sure hope we get to see him again and get him in tight for a shot!
He's a real stud and still a regular around the property....just got off the phone with the guy who looks over the property and lives there....he said he sees him quite often
I hunted this area this past Monday and for the first time this fall didn't see a deer!
Looks like my next shot at hunting down there will be Monday....
-
From another thread last week...
"Ten Years and Two Days"
Sometimes it's not about how big, sometimes there's a deeper reason to release an arrow....today was one of those days...

Yes he looks solid. I want to see him with Cade's bow laying next to him. I can't wait to hear about Cade's adventures in person. I tell Peter about Cade's hunts all the time. You guys are a great team.
