Title: What do you use to radius a shelf?
Post by: J. Cook on October 14, 2013, 01:09:00 PM
I'd like to hear / see what you use to create a radius shelf to shoot off of.  I'm tuning & restoring a very sentimental bow for my father.  It's a flat shelf and I want to build it up a bit to be shot off the shelf.  I've done this in the past with some of my Bear bows for personal use using toothpicks under my rug.

But, I just wanted to see what many of you use - i.e what materials, how do you affix it, etc.

Thanks guys!  The bow is a Herters Perfection Sambar -- beautiful bow!!!!

Hard to beat a feather rest IMHO.

Jonathan,
Sounds like a cool project!  You can build up the shelf for a radius shape with leather applied and soaked with thin superglue/cyanoacrylate. Then shaped with a file or fine rasp, after it's cured, to the desired profile. You can then apply your hair, leather, velcro, etc. over this.
I build my own bows so generally shape the shelf to the desired profile prior to finishing and adding any accoutrements.

Cheers, Matt

Super glued leather works pretty good. I will try to remember to post a pic of one of mine when i get home tonight

Build up or take down?
Not hard to radius a shelf permanently with a hacksaw blade and rasp/sandpaper.
Something about those big, flat shelves that just holler "fix me" !!

With this riser, it's a super high grip -- there is no option for literally taking wood away to radius the shelf.  I'll have to build it up.  Some good ideas so far...keep them coming!

If not modifying shelf(as in someone elses bow),
try using a small piece of vacumn hose.Split it lengthwise and lay your shelf material(usually use HD velcro here)on tight enough to slightly compress tubing.Makes a pretty forgiving rest.
Plug end of hose slightly to prevent water from entering or just overlap with material.
Also use it riser if that needs building out.

I have used a short piece of Popsicle stick , carpet taped down and rounded off . put your rug or Velcro over that . Works great .

That's a great way to ruin a perfectly good bow.

Building up the shelf with leather is an excellent solution.

Cork. I have used the cork from wine bottles to modify the shelf on many bows. Quiet and waterproof. The sheets of cork work well for side plates. Craft stores sell them.

I like a matchstick on the rest and a toothpick on the plate.  Epoxy in place and cover with leather
