Hey gang...Please give me your opinions on which glass color you like better for a hunting bow AND what single color riser wood you'd pick to match the glass and why......Thanks

I like both.....you can even do Black on the front and Brown on the belly. I like cocobolo and osage with almost anything. I have heard some boywers feel that black glass preforms better. Both colors will blend in well in the woods.
-
I like the looks of black glass with either red cocobolo or bocote.
-
I really think it's a personal choice. My preference would be brown glass and either a walnut or zebra riser. Aside from personal preference, I also think that brown blends into the woods better than black (deer, squirrels, rabbits, etc...)
-
I've noticed that, at least where I hunt, there doesn't seem to be very much actual black in the woods. There's a lot of dark gray but anything that is actually black seems to jump out at me. I think a lighter color would blend in better. Brown or even green or red, since deer are color blind, would appear as some shade of gray just like everything else to their eyes. My opinion is that the absolute best camo for a bow is snake skin. Never had one with skins myself but have been around quite a few and they really blend in.

Oh, and I think zebra wood looks great with brown. For woods with a redish hue, like cocobolo, bubinga, pau fero, etc. I prefer black glass. Just my personal preference. Others that I like with brown would be walnut, curly maple, bocote, and shedua. Here's a late 60s Ben Pearson Hunter with zebra wood/brown glass.

Brown Glass,
Osage riser,(strong and good looking)
Amber bamboo laminations(or walnut for a longbow)
-
I like the looks of Brown Glass but have seen some ugly stuff that almost looked purple once. I guess it would depend on what the Bowyer had in stock. If its the purple stuff I would go with Black.
There are Hundreds of great wood choices. I think some of the best have been listed.
-
I am in that situation right now and I let the bowyer select according to what he has to work with...he sent me some pictures after glue up and it is Osage with black glass...nice combo

You know something bro.... that purple looking brown glass has to do with the curing process at Gordon Glass, and only looks like that when you get it. Once it's sanded and finished it's a nice chocolate brown again. I freaked out when i first got the stuff myself....
Brown looks really good with Zebra wood... but Black is still my favorite. It goes good with any riser wood.IMO
-
Since my go-to bow has black glass, I guess that is what I like best! The riser on my bow is a solid piece of cocobolo, and it looks sweet!

I have a pair of brown and black that Brandon Stahl made for my Bear T/D's. The brown one's look nice with the Supreme and the Bubinga riser's, and I use the black one's on the older handles.
-
Bocote for either glass color in HH bows looks good with same color wrap. Brown looks nice with myrtle risers as well as does white.

I ordered my Widow PCH graybark, with black glass on the belly side of the limbs. Pics coming soon......
-
Black glass limbs with a dark coco bolo riser is just drop death gorgeous...
-
Hard to beat black. I like it real glossy and shiny :)

I got the opposite on the way - a HHA with brown back, black belly & African blackwood....
-
I have a arroyo on order with charcoal dymondwood riser...and black glass.....
:bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:

I like them both. However, Black is my favorite!
-
I'd take brown any day, Zebra or Myrtle wood handle.

-
I have both and like them both. like green also.
-
My Groves has brown glass and it looks great with the Shedua/Bubinga riser....so does the black glass!
I think a Super Actionwood Charcoal gray riser with black glass looks really sharp and the Brown Actionwood riser with brown glass blends in really well. Zebra wood riser with brown glass is another good looking bow.
I'm partial to Cocobolo risers and Yew limbs...
-
It's very much a personal taste. I like brown (or green or gray). Black in the limbs and riser doesn't appeal to me - but that's just me.
Clear on top of a nice wood grain is my favorite. ;-)
-
I love Macassar Ebony but Cocobolo is my second favorite. I don't have many black or brown glass backed or faced limbs. I have a green glass Grayling (bubinga riser) and a carbon weave pattern that is black on an ILF.
Here's a picture of a Rosewood Diamondwood and Ebony Schafer. The limb veneers are myrtle though. I think a bow with Coco and Macassar Ebony would be beautiful.
I just love beautiful wood too much too not go with exotic veneers on the limbs.
I do have a Sasquatch BW Ebony with black veneered limb faces and ebony backs. I'll hunt up a picture.

Here are some bows on a rack.
The grey wood with black limb veneers is a Habu Mamusha.
The BW Ebony is a Sasquatch. That one has BW Ebony limb backs and black glass face.
The TT Titan (Metal riser) is carbon backed and faced.

Had Jason to use brown glass on my latest Kanati, and I'm glad I did. Don't have a problem with either.
-
I like both, but clear glass is my favorite, with a beautiful veneer.
Good luck!
-
I have an all green Baraga, ordering the same bow in a green (belly) brown (back) next week in Kzoo.
-
I'm with Two Tracks. Brown glass and Osage. Throw a Bocote or Cocobolo accent in there to top it off.
-
Black glass and Bocote.
-
Dont know if its true, ive heard black glass is a little more brittle, not enough to hurt anything, might be why say it performs a little better ??
-
I have been wrestling with this since I ordered my Sasquatch, I was thinking black, but , brown would be nice, what about green ? If I said this out loud I would sound like Sue picking out paint colors, or shoes.... I still have some time though.
-
Ron - "I have heard some boywers feel that black glass preforms better."
You are not the first time I've heard this. Can someone explain the reasoning? ...Thanx

I know nothing about building bows, so I wouldn't advise making any bets based on my comments. Just my thoughts. I can see where a slight variation in the chemicals used in getting the desired color could have an impact on the physical properties of the glass. Having said that, I doubt if it would be as big of a difference as what you would have between the properties of different types of core woods (ie. bamboo vs. maple vs. action wood etc.). It is generally accepted that there will only be a few fps difference between the different core woods when using the same limb design, as long as you use one of the standard proven woods. That leads me to believe that there wouldn't be over maybe 3-5 fps difference at the most between brown and black, or any other color for that matter. In my opinion, I could live with losing that much in order to get the look I want, whether for aesthetics or concealment or whatever. Like I said though, I'm not a chemist :smileystooges: Also, I'm terrible about losing return addresses, but I promise that your bow will be lovingly cared for and put to good use if that should happen. :D And if anybody has any of these with any other color glass, such as green, red, yellow, white, etc., send them as well. Might as well be thorough.

I have my next bow all layed out in my head and it's a Osage riser with Black glass front and back and Osage overlays on the tips and front of the riser.

Here is one with fishtail oak and med brown glass with black glass and bocote overlays. Pic isnt the best it was wet with finish when i took the pics. Oh yeah! Can't wait to get my grubby mitts on that one. :D I'm liking the black belly and brown back. Might have to do that myself sometime :bigsmyl:

Anyone tell us why black glass is faster/fastest?

I asked Craig at HHA about that one time. He told me that he had found no performance difference in the two. Suggested that it might be an "old wives tale".

Herter's used black on the back

Because it doesn't show streaks like clear. :dunno:

Now Roy....if you ever decide to get rid of that one....I'll be ready!!!!
Beautiful Bow!

I have always disliked black because it sticks out like a sore thumb in the woods. My next 58" limbs for my TallTines will be brown glass...I like the simple look.
Is there really a difference in performance?
-
I like both but the old green glass has a really cool look that I think is classy
