Hey guys! This post is partially my introducing myself, and partially asking for advise.
So I've been shooting half my life, but I've been in the military for the last 8 years and just never had time to keep with it. Well, I'm back home to MN, and I just got my wife a samick sage to learn on. And I have to say, going back to my bows, and then firing the sage, my go-to vintage bear is a really harsh fire. Not only is it a little above my poundage now, but it just feels harsh on the release.
So I've decided to move in a ne direction and pick up a takedown myself. After a lot of deliberation and concern, I've decided on bear takedowns. This way I can start with an old beat up magnesium riser and work towards a nice green stripe or something.
Well, my question is this. The bow specifically I'm looking at right now comes with limbs much too heavy for me to start back up. So, aside from ****, is there a good source of straight, light (like 35-40) limbs? They've been making these limbs for 40 years now, but I can't seem to find any of the lighter variants.
I'm probably going to set up a trade thread and try to get a solid pair of limbs for me, but I'm not sure I'm ready to give up the bear of my adolescence.
Thoughts?

Welcome to the gang.
The classifieds here are a good source as well as the sponsors listed above.
Footed shaft in Rochester mn, big Jim's, lost nation, nocking point.
You'll find it all here..
:clapper: :clapper:
Make it to the coon rapids shoot fathers day weekend.. Great trad shoot.

Just checked footed shaft has a set 33lbs. On a 1riser.
-
Footed shaft is a new one for me. I'll go check them out now.
Also, please forgive any typos. This is all on a new phone

A second part to my inquiry.
What is the least expensive/least desireable of the wood construction bear risers? Or, what is the least desireable wood riser that I should desire?
-
Any Bear wood riser is worth owning and shooting. If I were in your shoes I would purchase a new two-tone riser. They look great and are destined to be a classic.
The Bear TD bug will bite and you will find yourself with more than one of them. I have five right now. Enjoy!

I was considering buying new, but it's a big up-front investment. I feel more comfortable starting with a mag riser and building up to good limbs, and then to a good riser from there. If there aren't any deals on **** when I'm at that point I might just drop the cash for a new one.
-
Well, I pulled the trigger. I have a mag riser with two sets of Paul Schafer limbs on the way. Plus I pulled the trigger on that 33# set of limbs at the footed shaft.
Spent a whole lot of money today, but I think it was all well spent. I feel confident that I made some good decisions here.

Congratulations. Remember, there are lots of Bear TD aficionados on here, so if you have questions just shout out.
-
Congratulations... I don't think you will be disapointed. I have pretty much purged most of my other bows and have picked up nine Bear takedowns over the last couple of years.

The classified section here requires a $30.00 per year fee, but let me tell you - if you'll be doing the trad life for a while, you'll make your money back time and again. Forget other things like "online auction site" and the digital yard sales. I've done trades and got a sweet bow on there and all were great deals. The people here treat their kit with respect, and are great to deal with. I don't even bother looking at other sites for most things. Welcome to what is most likely the best traditional archery site ever. Be warned, if you think shooting consumes your time, reading the thousands of threads here will take up the rest! Haha

I would bet your arrows are too light for your Bear if you think it is harsh...and a little heavy to start. Heavier arrows will soften the blow.

That's a good possibility. I've been working with the cheapest eastons I can get my hands on, but I just started making and fletching my own arrows so I have some room for customizing the arrows to me and my bow.
I'm hearing a lot of importance being placed on FOC, so I think I'm just going to invest in some heavier field points.

My 55-75 gold tips where to light at 50@28" with 29" draw with 260 grains up front. Waiting for my 75-95 (300s) gold tip blend to show up from Big Jim. With my 55 lbs Big Jim buffalo bow they work fine....

Oh, man. The wait for the mail is always the worst. I really wish I could have it for the Rochester event this weekend, but usps says Monday.
I'm definitely going to be shooting to trade one of the sets of Paul Schafer limbs for a wood riser.
Do you guys think that's a decent offer? It seems like every bear td afficionado has half a dozen risers, but I don't see anybody with Paul Schafer limbs. I figure someone out there is willing to trade a shooter wood riser for a set of collectable limbs.
I'd like to hear some thoughts on if you think that's a reasonable trade, or if I'm off my rocker.
