I was reading thru this years hunting regulations for SC and came across this,
"Legal hunting time for deer is the time be-
tween one hour before official sunrise until
one hour after official sunset "
Seems it gets pretty dark around here 30 minutes after sunset and is grey light 30 minutes before sunrise. Curious what other states regulations say. I guess with a full moon and a quality scope a rifle/crossbow hunter could do well, that leaves me out.

Texas is 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset.
I hope all is well on your end Gery!

VA is 30 min.
Use to hunt SC a lot. Never could understand that reg. it is dark by then for sure.
-
30 min. before and after, here in OK, too.
-
It has been that way for as long as I can remember. If you are in the woods, there is no way you can see that late...
-
Montana is 30 minutes before and after. It is usually getting pretty dark by then even.
-
In Tennessee, it's 30 before and after as well, best I remember.
-
30-30 in Colorado as well.
-
Same here in md 30 mins before and 30 after
-
30-30 in IL
-
30-30 in California.
-
30-30 here as well. Yeah, 60min would put us in the dark for sure.
-
Colo is 30-30. :readit:

LA: 30 & 30!

I generally leave earlier than the legal time when hunting early season cause with leaf cover where I hunt (marsh) I can't see.

You're elevation relative to the horizon matters alot in terms of when it gets dark. In a hollow it might be impossible to see 30min before or after, but on a tall ridge or mountain you might be able to shoot close to an hour before or after.
Also, I know with a really nice scope (for example I have a zeiss 3-9x40), you can practically shoot at night on a full or near full moon ... obviously irrelevant for bowhunting.
Just enjoy the time towards the end of shooting light that you get with a trad bow ... with a compound and a peep sight you get alot less time after sunrise since it acts liek a lens and cuts down on the light.
Hope that this doesn't qualify as unnacceptable conversation, since I'm only mentioning it as it relates to the question of shooting light and hunting hours.
Cheers

Missouri is 30 before and 30 after also
-
Same here.
-
Louisiana is 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset

30 and 30 are very common and the rule here in KY as well. I find, unless it is stormy, very good light in both situations unless one is in dark timber. If you are on the edge of openings it feels about 10 minutes early to be climbing down but I do.

Thanks for the responses guys, I thought I remembered the legal hours were 30 minutes before sunrise not one hour here in SC, always been one hour after for deer.
little Ben, this is the low country, NO ridges or mountains on the coast, highest point in the county is 30' above sea level. However on a white sandy open ridge, 10-15' above sea level, one could see very well with moon near or at full. I have sat in the tree for couple hours after dark just watching and learning as my bow was lowered and at base of tree. Witnessed a pretty decent buck fight this way once.
If I can not get the buck I am after during daylight hours the reward is not worth it. I will admit to shooting a few at dark thirty but that was a while back in my hunting life. Most of the time now I can walk out of woods without the need of a flash light and still be able to look for snakes to avoid.

Florida 30 mins before and 30 after.

We have posted times, per day for each of the sections of the state. So shooting times end at, say, 4:43 on 16 October, and 4:41 on 17 Oct. I hunted back east for years with the 30-30 rule, but they define it here. Long pole in that tent is where do you take official time?
