Title: Trad bug
Post by: breazyears on August 10, 2014, 08:18:00 AM
I have been a hunter for 15 years now, and have always used a bow. Compound, seemed to me the only choice...fast, easy, accurate, etc.
Around six months ago a little bug started eating at me... it was the trad bug. So I built myself a RD glass bow. I fell in love with it, although I couldn't hit a thing.
For the last month and a half I have been practising on a fairly serious level and have improved greatly. I have recently started shooting a 300 round... think that's what ya call it. My scores have been getting much better. I still have only shot a 187, but this gives me a goal, a reason to keep at it.
My ultimate goal is to hunt with a traditional bow. To be able to take an animal with a simple stick, and string... especially one I built, would be a real feather in my cap. I have a ways to go but I will get their.
Reading the topics on this site have helped me immensely, both shooting, and building, and I thank you for that.
Im not sure where this little bug came from, but I sure am glad he came.
Oh ya... Anyone interested in buying a couple of compounds? lol.

get out and stump shoot,,, no targets or scoring just you trying to hit what your eye is looking at,, off colored leaves on the ground, dead branches sticking out the sides of trees, rotted stumps, bushes with a branch coming out the side arrows pass right thru nicely...  you get my point..

hunting now is not a problem as long as you know your effective range,, like a compound that only has one pin you need to know where your comfort distance is,,,,, my buddies wife is an OK shot out to 20yds but hunting her distance is 15 max but she prefers deer 5 to 10yds away from the base of her tree..  on a 3D course she never hits above 200 but in the woods in her stand she has already taken 3 deer in 3yrs of hunting shooting close animals only.

Good luck this season? Even squirrel hunting is more fun with a trad bow!

If you have any questions on shooting, equipment, or hunting just let us know!

A 300 round is shot at 20yds, You can get good enought to hunt at 12yds and still not be good enough at 20yds.

Just determine what your max range is for a consistent kill shot, and don't shoot farther than that!

Btw, I have been hunting trad for almost 20yrs, and rarely take a shot at a critter over 15yds! I can shoot farther, and have on occasion, but usually don't!

Awesome, welcome to the dark side lol... Like bisch said you can hunt when you want too just limit your shots... I don't know where I heard this but someone said that you should consider hunting with a trad bow until you can consistently shoot a 200 on the NFAA 300 indoor round. I say whatever range you can consistantly shoot a 200 make that your limit.

Good luck
