Title: Ghillie vs leafy suit opinions
Post by: Bob B. on August 10, 2014, 02:53:00 PM
Those who know me know I am an avid ground hunter/ stalker.  I especially enjoy hunting transition zones with my pack seat and leafy suit.  I am wondering if tradgangers have experience/ opinions on Ghillie suits over leafy.

I have both and to me while the Ghillie will break your outline better, it's more suited for stationary ground hunting.  Not as good as leafy suit for stalking, ghillie will hang up too much

I thought the leafy suit (bug tamer) was the "Cat's Meow" until I bought the Rancho Safari ghillie suit.  I have had so many awesome encounters while wearing the ghillie that I will probably never go back to the leafy suit.

Bob B, I've never used a ghillie..was gonna get one last year but my son gave me a leafy jacket. I only hunt out of ground blinds, so I dont need the bottoms.

I took some 3D blind material I had and hot  glued pieces of it along the shoulder/arm area. This along with my ghillie hat my outline is broken up with the same effect as a ghillie.
Just a thought.
If I went with a ghillie I would look at the Marc Anthony bowhunter ghillie

I have both and prefer the Guille long coat. Hike in with it in a bag. Put it on, break out my Huntmore or Waldrop pack seat and I'm ready for whatever presents itself. As stated above, the Guille does a better job of breaking up your outline. Try it, you'll like it.   :campfire:

I have used Big Jim's Bush in a Bag from time to time, and it is easy to carry and put on in the field without having to walk around looking like Sasquatch. It is also affordable.

I have used them all.  To me the ghillie far surpasses the leafy suits for breaking up the human outline to the extend that when an animal busts you they may accept the movement.  The problem is that traditional ghillies snag on everything and can get extremely hot and are heavy when wet.  I stumbled upon the kill suits from all predator calls (google) and to me they are the best out there.  Extremely light weight, break up the human outline extremely well, easy to care for, and they just don't snag on stuff like the string versions.

For the price that "Kill Suit"  looks like something worth trying out.

I ordered the All Predator "sapper" (poncho style). It came in last week, and I think it could be the best of both worlds.

Rancho Safari has (had ?) an ultralight long coat which had a bit less "stuff" on it.  I have been using one for years and love it.  Not hot, covers well, but they are not great for stalking in.  I have had a ton of close encounters in it.

Ghille has been hands down more effective for me but a pain to use compared to my leafy suit...I use both, usually the ghille when deer start catching on to me if I keep hunting the same spot, which sometimes happens

make your own ghillie~ far more rewarding, and inexpensive to boot!

I have a hooded sleeveless vest from Rancho Safari that I really like. Had it for years. I just wear it over standard camo, and it breaks up my outline nicely, without needing a full suit.
