Title: arrow shaft selection with 3River / Stu calculator
Post by: pinky on August 13, 2014, 01:20:00 PM
If i am using the Stu-calculator to guestemate my shaft + point wt choices, am i shooting for the best Bare-shaft to bow + draw match? and then error to the weaker side to account for the fletching?

Go with the shafts it suggests. You can calculate for fletching with the program. If you enter all of the data correct you will have a good arrow. You may need to tune the brace height a little for fine tuning.

Th way I have found to make Stu's calculator work best for you is to enter all your bow info, then enter an arrow combination that you know thru personal experience is tuned well for your bow. Then set the personal form factor to make the bow and arrow match. After that, with he PFF set, you can work up just about any arrow combo and be real close to right!

What is the personal form factor? I just could never get thru all the numbers for everything it asks for, seems complicated to me, i wish i could figure it out.

The truth of the matter is that as simple as it can be getting the correct dynamic spine is also pretty complicated...using an example from my experience my 55 pound 1960 Kodiak tunes nicely with 340 spine arrows...after adding a Whisper string that bow shows weak even with 300 spine...on the weekend I added an HMPE string to my 1960 Kodiak Deluxe...generally one would assume a bow of that weight would be fine with a 500 spine arrow but in fact it bareshafted quite nicely with a 340 spine 2315...the calculator may get you close but final tuning needs to be done the hard way, by shooting bare shaft

I am happy with my arrows for my Hatfield. The Hatfield is 60#@28 DL is 29+ w B 50 string, the arrows are trad only 300s 30.5" with standard inserts and 175 pts. Tested the arrows with W. woodsmans The and Zwicky Deltas. Both hit where the field pts hit and flew great. Very close match on the 3 River Calculator. Now I just need to fine tune some edges, find some animals, and close the distance. Thanks for the input everybody.  :)

The calculator accommodates fletching in its figures.  It has worked well for me.  Center shot makes a differance so if your bow isn't on the calculator make sure you select the proper center numbers.

Bare shafting will show you the truth regardless of all advice and calculators. But the calculator worked for me.
