This build actually started in 1993. I cut this osage log and several others that year. This is the last of them. Its just been waiting patiently for me to decide to use it.

Earlier this year Feb. or March. I can't remember which  The PBS had their biannual banquet in Cincinnati. Tracy and I donated a bow to be auctioned off at the banquet. Some of you may remember seeing that bow. Here is the PBS donated bow. (http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e305/zipperbows/finishedpbsbow2.jpg) (http://s42.photobucket.com/user/zipperbows/media/finishedpbsbow2.jpg.html)
Long story short Bill Kissner was the winning bidder.
I first met Bill and his wife Jeanie on one of the pig gigs from some years back. Tracy and I hit it off with them instantly. Its easy to get along with good folks and Bill and Jeanie are some of the best. We kept in touch and when the PBS banquet came up Bill and Jeanie parked their camper at our place. We are only about 45 minutes from where the banquet took place so it worked out well.
I knew Bill had been thinking of buying a Zipper in the near future. We had talked about options a few times.Knowing that it was not a big surprise when Bill bid on the donated bow. Well....He ended up winning the bow. I knew it was not exactly what he wanted so I offered to trade him the banquet bow for the model and wood combinations he wanted. I knew it would not be easy to convince him. Bill is VERY generous and it was hard to convince him that the woods he wanted were actually less money than the donated bow. He was very worried that I would get shorted in the deal. Finally after a few minutes of discussing it he relented.
That brings us to this week when I started on his bow. You see we are going out to hunt elk with him at the end of this month so I figured if I wanted to know where his secret spots are I had better bring his bow. :D

you have my attention :archer:

Here is what was on the inside of that log.

Bill likes the ZSR riser. He ordered an all Osage riser with 2 curved black phenolic strips. For the limbs he went with carbon and foam. They are to be 58"57#@28". For the belly veneer Bill chose to stick with the Osage. Once it came time to actually get the limb layed up I could not do it. There was a stack of Olive Ash veneers that just kept taunting me. I called Bill and asked if I could use the Olive Ash and stain it to look like Osage instead of using the Osage I had for veneers. Bill agreed to let me change his order.
Here is how the belly of the limbs turned out along with the riser wood all cut to size.

It gets better! The inside of the riser piece has some interesting grain going on along with some small knots. It should make for a very unique riser.
The carbon on the limbs will get dressed up with a very rare albino diamond back rattle snake skin. Its going to look great with this wood combo.!
Bill is also getting one of our matching Woodie quivers.
That's all I have for now. I'll share some more pictures as they come.
I sure hope you like it Bill!!
-
Very nice! I can't wait too see this unfold.
-
IMO Bill builds one heck of a bow and I can't wait 'till he and Tracy arrive here in Colorado with it. The riser and limbs are going to be just beautiful and the albino skin is going to be the icing on the cake!

-
So, so, COOL!. That bow will have the best mojo.
More please...
-
Beautiful wood Bill! Thanks for taking the time to share this...
-
Bill that will be very nice. The widow will be hung up and never touched again. Can't wait to see it finished.
-
Bill is a lucky man!
-
Awesome. Good stuff Bill....and Bill.
-
What a beauty that is going to be! Osage is one of my all time favorite bow woods. Understated elegance, classy, and just keeps getting better with age.
Bill, enjoy your bow, and Bill and Tracy, enjoy your trip!
-
Man this sure is coming along nicely !!! Love the looks of the stained Olive Ash. Great work as usual Bill !!! :notworthy:

Well, Bill, get ready for a wonderful time hunting in and around Lost Canyon! Bill and Jeanne are the most generous and gracious couple I've met in my lifetime, and Bill has decades of hard-earned knowledge about his neck of the woods that he shares fully... perhaps more fully than he really should! You and Tracy are going to have a great experience, on SO many levels.
The other thing about Mr. Kissner is how he will certify that beautiful new bow's worth as a hunting tool. The man is a KILLIN' MACHINE, and has taken more elk with a bow than I have whitetails! As a bowyer, I'd have to think it is gratifying to put one of your creations in the hands of someone who has shown he can do so much with it, and use it so well. It couldn't be going to a better home.
Enjoy the fellowship, food, scenery, food, hunting, food, accommodations... well, you get the idea! And don't forget to take note of the starry display at night. It is gorgeous.
They are out there waiting for you and Tracy. I hope you get the chance at a close encounter- or maybe even a shot!

Looking forward to watching this one

I did not get much bow work done today. I had a big broadhead order to fill and that kept me away from the bows for about half the day. Here is the riser blank all glued up.
(http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e305/zipperbows/Billsriserblank.jpg) (http://s42.photobucket.com/user/zipperbows/media/Billsriserblank.jpg.html)
The rouged out riser and I mean ROUGH.The shelf is not even cut in yet.
(http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e305/zipperbows/Billsroughriser.jpg) (http://s42.photobucket.com/user/zipperbows/media/Billsroughriser.jpg.html)
You can just begin to see some of the character in this piece of Osage. If you look down where the bottom limb attaches you can see some of the grain. The rest of the character in the riser will show up once its all sanded. Then when the finish hits it the grain and pen knots will really pop!
No updates tomorrow or sat. I have to go out of town for a funeral.
-
Hey Bill,
Sounds great! Hope it comes out perfect for you.
-
Looking good my friend !!!
Bill

Hi Bill,
Good luck with your new bow. It is sure coming along great.
Please give all of our best to your lovely wife, from Karen and I.
Tim

I think Bill had to trade the other one in because I drooled all over it at the dinner table at the banquet. :D
That the wait on a Zipper is now up to 20 plus years has me a little worried though.
Y'all have a jam up time in CO!
-
Great looking bow. I will certainly be following this build along. Thanks Bill(s) for sharing it!
-
Bill K,you'll never appreciate that bow since you shoot it.
Bill D's bows are so quiet, fast and smooth that make them just perfect. The weight its self makes them a joy to carry all they long in the mountains. So its beauty is just a part of the equation. Congrats to both Bills.
-
Looks like a Bee now.
-
Daryl my friend, you embarrass me with such accolades! :o I wish I deserved half of them. By the way, your check is in the mail! :jumper:
-
Here is the skin that will be applied over the carbon tomorrow.
(http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e305/zipperbows/albinoskin.jpg) (http://s42.photobucket.com/user/zipperbows/media/albinoskin.jpg.html)
It will look much better on the limbs.
-
This is great. Really like watching this come together.

This is for sure going to be one extraordinary bow! Can't wait to see the finished product.

What a great story Bill and this bow is turning out great so far. Cant wait to see the finish.
-
I'm glad to see Kissner is getting such a nice bow.
Dunn has me on his build list again too, this time it's a new SXT for Lynne.
I'll be Elk hunting close to the Kissners and will be stopping in to say Hello.
Maybe we will all run into each other out there.
-
It still needs some more sanding and finish sprayed but I am making progress.

The skins are on the limbs but they will need to dry for a couple of more days before I can do anything more with them. The pattern on the skin shows up much better now.
I hope to see you there, Irv!
-
Great looking riser !!! Looking forward to seeing the finished limbs.
Bill

Wow, Bill, thanks for allowing us to see a master at work!
I love Zipper Bows!

BILL DUNN
Beautiful riser ...The osage has great color. Bill Kissner is going to love the bow. I know he cherishes your friendship so that will make it extra special.
You and Tracey will have a ball at Bill and Jeanie’s it is one of my favorite hunting destinations. Lost of fun and good hunting.
Good hunting and a safe trip ;)
-
Beautiful bow coming together, and I/we are looking forward to the completed bow pictures.
The bow at the PBS banquet was gorgeous, Hard to believe you are topping that.
Good luck and have fun in CO.
-
Bill, did you already make any pics of those skinned limbs?

Classy...and the best thing about it is it will end up being the perfect color match to elk antler. That one will be neat to watch age.
-
Skins are on along with lots of heavy coats of finish. The finish should be dry enough tomorrow for me to sand the whole bow. It will then get sprayed a few more times with the shiny finish then she will be ready for the flat and texture.

Dang Bill, I can't wait until you get here to try it out! The albino skins really mates up well with the osage. Gonna be a beautiful now!
-
I like it, it will age like fine wine. :bigsmyl:
-
WOW, What a looker! I am not normally a snake skin guy, but I really like the look of that albino skin on the Osage.
-
Just imagine what that bow will look like in 5-6 years. It's beautiful now but when that osage mellows over time it's going to be even more amazing.
True Art!!!!!!
-
THAT is one gorgeous bow!!! Put me down for the next set of albinos and Osage!

This is the only albino diamond back I have ever seen.
Bill, your bow should get its final coats of finish today. :jumper:
-
Thanks Bill. Won't be long before you are headed out here! Weather has been a little chilly but supposed to warm up a little next week. Was 37 degrees this morn.
-
Can't wait to hear how it shoots...... :campfire: :coffee:

Bill and Tracy arrived Labor Day afternoon. The bow is beautiful and I just this evening really got it and some Carbon Express Heritage 250's matched up. The bow is a hard shooter and is very quiet. Tomorrow morning will be its initial hunt. Would really like to christen it with an elk. It has warmed up a little and the elk are laying low for now but things will pick up.
-
Congrats on your new bow Bill. She will look even better with a little bit of blood on her. :D

Beautiful bow!
