I put in my application for Draw Elk at Greenwater Provincial Park back in May. I got the news that I was drawn in Aug. I have been hunting in this Park almost every 4 years for the past 20, except this year will be my 5th year application.
I knew exactly where I was heading, but it is a 8 kilometer walk in, partly on snow machine trails and partly through the bush. You can use a ATV to retrieve an animal that is down, but must walk when hunting.
I got drawn with my 82 year old Dad and Brother. my brother could not make first week due to family and my Dad although in great shape for his age is slowing down and will be rifle hunting. All weapons seasons co-inside at the same time of year, calling season.
We stayed at my cabin, just north of the Park a couple miles.

The first day my dad was delayed, so in I went to my favorite spot - the great wallow
Have you seen such a wallow?
(http://i1085.photobucket.com/albums/j435/Tloran/IMGP0120_zps15397045.jpg) (http://s1085.photobucket.com/user/Tloran/media/IMGP0120_zps15397045.jpg.html)

The first day I called in 3 elk, all stayed out to 80 yards, never saw one of them through the almost impenetrable hazelnut that take up 95 % of the Park.
I put on over 38 km (walked in and out twice so I could pickup my Dad and walk in with him) this day, from 4:00 am to 8:30 pm, wow was I done for.
The next morning again at 4:00am we were on our way in.
I knew this was going to be a good day, Dad could not make it all the way so I set him up a little spot and kept going to the wallow.

Just after legal time I bugled and got a response from the west, then I had two Bulls chasing each other run through the area (about 70 yards out)full tilt not sure still if they were coming to my calling or just there. They sounded like freight trains through the bush for several minutes.

:bigsmyl:

And now, the rest of the story!
-
Yeah what are we waiting for :dunno:
-
After several more bugles (elk or human?) I heard one from the south (where no human would be)and responded, he shut up quick and we all know what that means. A little later I heard branches breaking, and then it moving away..... bummer must have got my wind. A little later, what sounded like the same elk responded again, shut up again. Before I new it he was at the wallow, I turned slightly to set up and here he came, He had me pinned and was closing fast at three feet he stopped, likely because I slowly grabbed my bow more from fear than to get a shot. He eyeballed me, I could see the taste buds on his tongue and the small holes in his nose tissue, he could have used some scope!
He spooked, turned and I drew. As he got out to 20 meters I was at full draw, he stopped quartering away and..............

And.......

AND!?!
-
AND!?!
Whoops... a double... but it's sort of appropriate here!
-
Oh come on! I hate coming across these threads when they are real time!
Better when they are a week old so I don't have to sit in suspense like the rest of these schmucks...
Well, this would be a good time to refill my Ardbeg.
If I finish my next glass before I finish this story, I'm gonna be mad. Or drunk. Or both.
-
Sorry having photo bucket issues, I will have it up tomorrow (hopefully).
-
 i aint getting no sleep now. :)
will be up bright and early hoping for the rest of the story and pics. good story and great pics.

Alright, I'm in CA, and I'm awake!
Rise and shine sleepy head.

Good lesson here. When you said, "The first day I called in 3 elk, all stayed out to 80 yards", this is a reminder that you will be much more successful if you put a buddy out ahead of you just off line of the bugle. Then draw him in past your buddy. Of course it depends on the terrain. Just a thought....
Looking forward to hearing the rest and maybe seeing what used that wallow!

Actually Saskatchewan is on Central Standard Time...only place I know of in North America that refuses to recognize the questionable benefits of Daylight Saving Time...like the farmers say "the cows cannot tell time"

I shot, what I thought was a great shot. He ran for about 30 yards and slowed to a walk, he just slowly walked away like nothing had happened. I knew I hit him but was it good, did it penetrate enough. I have 3 videos of him walking away, close one does not upload and far one zoomed in is crappy.
(http://i1085.photobucket.com/albums/j435/Tloran/th_IMGP0139_zpsd8fa74d9.mp4) (http://i1085.photobucket.com/albums/j435/Tloran/IMGP0139_zpsd8fa74d9.mp4)
I left him for about 25 minutes, he disappeared so I thought he had laid down, I walked up to check for blood at the shot site "nothing". a little further I could here him crashing bushes, so I backed off, went and got my Dad, walked back in (40 minutes). followed a very thin blood trail. at the end he went 90 degrees for about 40 yards and...........

Now the joy and the work begun.

For getting him out, it took us till 6pm, buried quad over fenders once and ran out of chainsaw gas. A 16 km walk and equal rough quad ride and he's out.

You could say that! I was not sure who was going to spook first and run away. I was close.

Out of curiosity, would you care to share your equipment specs, whenever it's convenient? Bow draw weight, arrow weight, broad head brand, BH weight?
It's none of my business, but I'm curios just the same.

JJB, it sure did make it special with my Dad. My mom broke her leg in England and was flown to Calgary for surgery. Dad ended up only spending 1 and a half days hunting with me, and sharing this hunt, This will certainly be his last draw tag if not Elk hunt so at least he was there for me.
-
Awesome! Thanks for sharing and congratulations!
-
Congrats!!! and thanks for taking us along for the hunt!
